And the concensus was, it was definitely not just at AKL.
We just returned from the world, and my daughter's legs were bitten in the exact fashion that Barbruka and many others experienced (though not as severe to require medical assistance). I brought Skin so Soft by Avon with us, and she sometimes forget to use it.

We stayed at the Dolphin, but were out at night many places-the Boardwalk, the parks, the luau, Downtown Disney, so I have no idea where she got them....I got a few bites, but I had the SSS on me almost daily/nightly.

The no-see-ums always find me and leave everyone else alone.
The best thing I have found is Florida Swamp Insect Repellent.
It's in a generic looking spray can (mostly white) and is made by Protexall Products out of Maitland, Fl. I bought mine on Sanibel (the no-see-um capital of the world) but I'm sure they sell it all over Florida.

I better get the regular sss, sisnce there is a shop in our mall that sells avon. I wonder if they have been around all along or this is a new thing. I have been many times (4 trips last year) and have never had a problem. Maybe they don't like us. Thanks for the info !! :) Laurie

:) :) One Week To Go, AKL :) :)

I just got back from the AKL and we did not have a problem at all. There were, however, horse flys by the pool and my husband and son got bitten a few times. OUCH!

I live in FL and got eaten up on my DD's fieldtrip down a river a couple weeks ago. They just LOVE me! I don't think everyone was bothered by them. Must be a chemistry thing  that attracts them to me, just as mosquitos love me.

I guess I am not the only Hautean on here. Funny is that we go to Sanibel frequently as well. Never heard of the Florida Swamp stuff but I will check it out at Huxter's next time we go to Sanibel.
just thought I would say hi!

We just returned from AKL and we didnot get one bite.
Sunburned is another story. We all got burned even my daughter who I put Water Babies on. The sun is so strong and when your in the pool you don't realize your getting burned. The lotion said it was waterproof and lasted for six hours, but I think you need to reapply every 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Strange, we average twice/year, December & April and occasionally June, and have never been bothered by them. My parents live about an hour north of Orlando and we aren't bothered by them there either...neither are they.

Just came back from AKL on April 21.

No problems with getting any bites.

We stayed there last April too and nothing then either.

Just a note... I was at AKl April 16-18 and the noseeums had a dinner fest on my lower right leg. I was out by the firepit, also near a shrub area at the pool bar at dusk. Fortunately, I saw the bites early and used Benadryl topical (which worked well). I still have a faint outline of one of the bites. :o They are definately pesky little things and the bites take a while to clear up. My DH, DS, and DD were along and they left them alone. Mosquitoes normally don't like me, but the noseeums sure did. I'd recommend bug repellant (at least that's what I am planning next time).

AKL is an awesome place. The architecture was breathtaking and I really enjoyed meeting the African CMs and seeing the animals.
