Hi, back from carpool. Zoe absolutely loved, loved, loved school. I got her the Peppa and George Pig (from Noggin) on ebay sent from England and had George sitting in her car seat. She was so excited (she loves them so much) that she could barely tell us about school. I think we were the last of our thread to start school, so we should all be moving along.
By the way, I forgot to mention that it 91 in Anaheim today. But Ian and Sukie thought it felt fine as it was much cooler and drier than Chicago. We were sweating so much from the humidity that Jonathan changed clothes in the parking lot. We are such babies out here!
Sorry Marilyn, I'll send some sun your way!

Hi Kaylee! How's your DD holding up going back to the school she didn't want to go to?
After lots of tears and some drama with the school, we got her switched into a class away from the bullies and into one with all of her friends so she is loving life at school so far! :cool1: :cool1: I couldn't believe the teachers and principal set it up like they did and then made us seem like demanding parents for wanting her switched....but we said, either switch her or she is out of here...no demands at all:lmao:
So, it turned out well in the end......

GOOD JOB MICHELLE!
Just got off the phone with Ian about an hour ago...he sounded SOOOOOO excited and happy. They went over to Disneyland and had lunch at Cafe Orleans (regular and veggie Monte Cristos, of course) after the ceremony and were back at the hotel for a little break before heading to Napa Rose for their dinner.
Kelly, they were so delighted that you and Jonathan could be there as their witnesses. Thank you so much for representing all of us and making their day more special. :grouphug: Can't wait to see you on Saturday and share the hug in person.
Count me in for an on-line support group too!
Well, lots to do tonight, as I procrastinated on almost everying (did get the pedicure done last night), so I'm off to finish the last couple of pages on the old thread and head for the hills.

LIFESTYLE CHANGE and exercise! :goodvibes diet is a bad word that fails every time (IMHO) That is one thing I talk to all my patients about when we work on weight loss...........
Now, we wouldn't want to be politically incorrect would we :snooty:
Paul just got an email of how terrible we are for posting that our rental houe would be ideal for 2 people. I tell ya, I'm about up to my eyeballs in people being politically correct today....
You know I'm blowing steam...okay I'll not call it a diet when I'm eating 1200 calories a day and not having any comfort foods I'll call it TORTURE :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Oh my gosh, we're finally getting rain! We haven't had any in at least 3 weeks, so nothing's green anymore. Grass is brown and crunchy. Things look ugly. Everything should be green soon though if it keeps raining. So far it's just sprinkling and we need a good soaker to get any benefit from it.

Hi Marilyn
Got back from hospital, I hate it, waiting for aged!!
Anyway, Olivia got small cracked in her toe so need sole shoes for one or two weeks.
Ian's parent saw it and thought it was broken but it was not. I am glad that.
Olivia is happy now.
I forgot where are you going in 18 days ? I know not Tenerife.

Have a fun after work :thumbsup2

Glad Olivia's toe isn't broken, but being cracked will be painful!!!
We are going to La Gomera, which is a small island off the coast of Tenerife. We fly to Tenerife and then get a ferry from Los Christianos over to the island. It is a long day!!! La Gomera is like a volcano and there are no roads around the outside of the island so you have to go up and down snaking roads, and a journey that would take about 10 to 15 mins from where the ferry docks opn La Gomera to the site takes around 45 mins. We have been twice before, and I am still a bit scared of the roads.
Here are some pictures. You can see Mount Teide on Tenerife from some of them.

They do day trips from Tenerife, but not sure how expensive it is. When we were out and about we saw coaches dropping people off at the visitor centre at the tropical forest. There are some great view points. The sand is black!
We stay at a timeshare type place we belong to. To be honest, there isn't a whole lot to do there in general. We are going to relax and swim in the great pools on the comples. Oh, and eat of course. It is a great place for walkers and the whole island is criss-crossed by walking paths. During the summer though it is really too hot for walking (fortunately!!!!!!!)
I'm a little worried I will be bored now after spending so many hols at WDW

Hi everyone. Just a quickie, because we're heading out the door for in a moment.
So, let's see how this trip has been so far ...
Yesterday I finally mastered tying a bow tie.
Oh, yes, I got married...
Quite frankly we were both nervous and completely stunned. Sukie kept waiting for something to go wrong. I kept waiting for something to go wrong.
Nothing went wrong.
It was wonderful to have Kelly and Jonathan as our witnesses and the clerk couldn't have been better.
Kelly and Jonathan had a DVD going in the mini van of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and a CD of the wedding march.
It made all the difference in the world to have friends as the witnesses and know that you were all there in spirit.
I guess everything just lined up right this time. It certainly felt more real than our attempt with Canada. Last time we didn't even know what to wear. This time, the attire was carefully planned.
Did you like the expensive hats?
Aside from the pseudo Edwardian motif I was striving for, there was additional meaning behind "the look."
It was intended to be old fashioned and us looking like two old "confirmed bachelor gentlemen" as people used to refer to unmarried men such as ourselves.
We ended up not going to Napa Rose. We were still too full from our lunch at Cafe Orleans. We had a 6:30 PM reservation at Napa Rose. I tried to change it to 7:30 or 8 but they were booked up.
I couldn't see eating a big dinner if we weren't hungry (that will teach me to eat a Monte Cristo).
OK, more later and perhaps some more photos. We're off to Disneyland.

By the way ... the next cruise ... bow tie lessons!
Once you've seen a real bow tie and not a pre-made or clip-on there's no going back.
A real bow tie looks much better and is really not difficult at all to tie, once you understand how it's done.

A real bow tie looks much better and is really not difficult at all to tie, once you understand how it's done.
Ian...sounds like you guys are having a wonderful time......take lots of pics!

What in the world is the green stuff in the jar in the bottom left corner of the picture?
Thats my special cup o' liquor! And my lovely forehead...nice shot!
But what is the green stuff?:confused3
Deborah - glad to hear Olivia's toe isn't broken. Did you figure out what was up with your credit card and the plane ticket??
Marilyn, I don't feel I can vote since I wasn't able to attend due to Tyler not being able to be in the kids' club, but if I had attended, I'd also be in favor of just keeping it the girls. Although all the men in this group are wonderful, sometimes it's nice to just have a girls' only get together. :goodvibes
I wasn't there either, but it sounds like I missed a great time! I'm with Holly, sometimes its nice to have girl things.
Marilyn - your vacation sounds lovely. have a great time.
Angie - sounds like you are busier than ever after retiring!
Ian - I love the outfits! I like that the were similar but not identical. :thumbsup2 I figured there was some symbolism there, so thanks for explaining it. Glad to hear you were nervous, but everything worked out great! Every wedding has to have something go wrong, you just had your wrong thing early with the whole trip to Canada!

NO NAPA ROSE???
So... what was I supposed to wear as my OLD MAID costume?????
Old... my A$$.... Unless you AND Sukie shared a flat with Jenny Lind...
Well...there went MY surprise... :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :flower3: :flower3: :flower3:
By the way ... the next cruise ... bow tie lessons!

Some more of the rowdy teens on the EB... I don't know about you guys... buy MY mother would have killed me... (even at 44...she gives me the LOOK!!!)
I'm glad we did the cruise we did cause I LOVED all of our kids!!! :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc
With respect to the rowdy kids -- this was the first time we've ever experienced this on DCL and we wrote something in our comment card about it. We did see two OQ kids get reprimanded by a counselor for sitting in the elevator talking and going along for the ride with whoever joined them. However, that was about the extent of any action we saw taken by Disney employees. We saw a group of boys by the Deck 6 forward elevators being quite loud one night and when we asked them to be quiet, they just backtalked to us. Fortunately, our persistence finally got them to quiet down and it helped that we knew one of the boys (he wasn't being loud but it was guilt by association). We also experienced a lot of running and jumping on the stairs, screaming and overall obnoxious behavior. The worst was a group of young teen boys in line at Topsiders bragging about how they drained the ice cream machine by Goofy's Galley. Someone else told us they would try to deliberately break the ice cream machines.
Kid behavior? Some of the worst I've seen. Out of control enough for Christiaan to practically beg parents to get their kids into the Clubs.....and then to have us come out of our room one night to find a kid stuck ON TOP of the elevator (Deck 8, Aft) with the doors open and it halfway between floors, while Security & Maintenance were being called to "unstuck" him....his friends had abandoned him, except for the one inside the elevator. I hope they either dumped the family off in Aruba, or made him stay in his room for the rest of the cruise, but I doubt it. From what I've seen, DCL isn't hard enough on misbehaving kids.
I would also agree about the rowdy kids on board. We have been on many cruises and never have had this amount of disruption and out and out obnoxious behavior. It seemed we couldn't get on an elevator without having to deal with visiting every floor and climbing the stairs was not much better as most times we were having to avoid kids either pushing past us or jumping around us. We were of course on deck 2 and it did seem like the kids were worse there but there was no reason for these kids to be wandering the halls after OQ was closed. The night I stayed up all night doing laundry I was amazed at how many tweens and teens, were hanging around in the stairwells and hallways at 4 am. Which was when I was delivering FE's so I saw this on many floors not just deck 2. My in-laws who are in their 80's had several stories to tell about the rudeness of kids to elderly folks who couldn't move as quickly, like stealing elevators and pushing in front of them in line. They also witnessed the ice machine draining. We even saw kids who were out and out wrestling in the middle of the hallways. When asked where there parents were they told us they didn't have any. When asked by the room steward to settle down they just laughed at him and continued on. Truly, I was surprised by the basic lack of manners and common courtesy of many kids. Now I know that this wasn't every kid and there were those who were very polite and were watched closely by their parents, but they seemed few and far between and like someone said there was probably a lot of guilt by association going on too. It is a shame that a few could ruin it for so many. Really makes you wonder what their parents were doing and why the kids didn't seem to know how to follow the rules. Of course, they were probably the same people who didn't think that the dining room proper attire request for No shorts, please, applied to them.

DD and DS both said that the game systems were always hogged by people and you couldn't even get on if they wanted to. The counselors didn't put any time limit on them. DS also said that he watched two kids break a game consol just because they could. He was upset by it because it meant one less game area that could be used to play. He also said that when him and his friends mentioned it to a counselors later on they basically just ignored it
and didn't even approach the kids that were breaking items
Yes for the first time ever my two kid avoided the clubs rather than go to them, usually they are in there 9.00am to 11pm, sea days and you wouldn't get them out, this time because of the game console hogging and behavior of some kids in the clubs my two just stopped going.
My son went to Ocean Quest one morning and got on the simulator for just a minute or two, when he said an 'adult' pushed him off and said he was going on it. I did witness some bullying of my son in the goofy pool, so went in, and was going to speak to the child concerned, but he went off and attacked another kids in the pool, and their parents told him off.
Aly and AJ were next door to us so we had a lot of kids going up and down our deck knocking on our door as they knew the approximate location, Aly and AJ said in the concert the type of room they had to it narrowed it down to our deck,
We saw alot of bullying and just plain rude kids. DS was in the pool the first day at sea for about 5 minutes when he came out and said that two boys pushed him and kicked him in the stomach, cursed and said to get out of their way. They were brothers and not more then 10 years old. I went over to see who they were and they were out of the pool. Parents must have complained because after that date a cm was at the Goofy pool walking around the edge of it. We saw these same boys, DS pointed them out on the next day at sea again at the Gooy pool climbing up the poles on the sides of that deck with their parents sitting there watching them do this
A few evenings the kids attempted to play foosball and one kid kept running up to the tables and grabbing the ball and throwing them away from the table. On Pirate night DS tried to play with another DISr's daughter and the same kid came and did the same thing. He must have been around 7years old as he was pointed out to me by both kids later that night
Once DS figured out the kids that he should stay away from he just wouldn't go to the areas they were in.
I blame the kids but also blame the parents for allowing their kids to behave the way they do
I am just glad that my kids ended up making friends with kids that were well behaved and very nice and they did have a great time. The kids were all hugging on the last night and not wanting to say goodbye
Someone in the stack had her purse stolen on CC day and her mom and her were walking over to the teen area to see if they could find it. The girl was very upset as she had her passport, ipod and other items in there
This in no way ruined our cruise - we really did have a TOAL and would do it again in a heartbeat
Andrew it was a pleasure speaking with you and your children while waiting for the doors to open for the Aly & AJ show
I wanted to add that this behaviour was not the norm and not a daily occurance just what stuck out in my mind. Even the ST we encountered were polite. I hope that my ST was one of the polite ones any of you encountered The teens we did see hanging out were just doing so out of boredom and not being disruptive
And other stuff...
We were told that the delay at disembarkation was due to a surprise health inspection. That wouldn't surprise me, since the ship had been gone for so long, and had been in Colombia.

Well, I talked to Cheri and Jackie, they are on their way across the desert 111 degrees:scared1:
Ian, said yesterday was a blur.
Nan is behind schedule and trying to get out the door with the family.
Talked to Steve and he and the boys are ready for tomorrow.
Didn't talk to Venetia or Gaylean, cuz they are locals!;)
Warning to Gaylean and Venetia. Stop and go to the bathroom on your way and prepare for bad parking.
I forgot a pic of Steve :scared1: I really tried hard to remember everyone. I didn't have one of Jonathon.

Holly, did you ever figure out what happens with your pay on holidays? Or are you just waiting to see what happens? How did you survive your two long days in a row?

Holly, did you ever figure out what happens with your pay on holidays? Or are you just waiting to see what happens? How did you survive your two long days in a row?
Everything I've researched says employers have no obligation to pay for holidays, so I'm just going to accept the 7.5 hours of holiday pay like everybody else gets, even when it falls on a day I'm scheduled 9 hours. The part I will protest though is being forced to use my personal hours to get up to that 9 hours. I'll settle for just the 7.5 hours. There's no way they can force me to use those hours because they're "personal" hours, which I need to save for doctor's appointments or build up to use as full days for if Tyler gets sick and needs to stay home from school, or if I get sick.
The big test will be on this next paycheck because our office manager told me my official fulltime status would start September 1. A couple days ago she told me, "Oh, we can't do that because that was a holiday, so we'll make the start date 9/2". I told her, "No way, you TOLD me 9/1". Unfortunately, I don't have anything in writing either way, but I still will include that holiday on my time sheet and see what happens. :thumbsup2

09-05-2008, 10:28 PM
Oh, and the long days didn't seem any longer than usual to me. Probably because the first hour and a half I'm the only person in the offices, so I sort of blunder through my work in a half asleep state, then people start coming in and I start waking up, and they day is over before I know it. :goodvibes

I love fall because of the smell of people burning leaves, but it also freaks me out ever since a house a couple houses away burned down 2 years ago. Every time I smell a fire, I wonder if it's a real fire. That was so scary to watch, especially since it spread to the house on each side of it, so it could easily have spread down a couple more houses to ours, considering it was the middle of the night when everybody was sleeping.
I mention this because I'm wondering whether the smell I'm smelling now is a real fire or somebody burning leaves. But since it's way too early for leaves to fall, that makes me wonder even more. I just walked outside to see if I can see any smoke anywhere, but none.

Here burning leaves and grass inside city limits is against the city by-laws. There's still a few that do it, but its not too common. I've never seen anybody burning leaves, sometimes people burn their lawns in the spring.
Lots of people have wood stoves for heat in winter, and if the weather is right, you can smell that smoke (yuck!)

Well, bekieve it or not, we've missed the rain so far today!!! It was very heavy in the night, but so far today we have had a little sun!
Unfortunately there have been floods around the country again. They say the ground is just so full of water it can't take any more.

Good morning all!
We are meeting up with Nan, Paul, Molly, Wilson, Jackie and Cheri for breakfast this morning at Mimi's.
Last night we had dinner with Cheri and Jackie at Hook's Pointe and had a great time.
We spent pretty much all day yesterday in the parks. We started at DL in the morning and then later on went to DCA, then back to DL.
We're enjoying DL, but a bit of a shock after the MK. We know our way around the MK so well, and keep getting confused in DL.
The castle was a shock. Sukie refers to it as Sleeping Beauty's condo.
Just a couple of culture shocks:
1. We can't get over how people stand and wait for the light to change before crossing the streen. Even if there is not a single car around ... They still stand there waiting for the light, rather than just crossing. We're from Chicago, the traffic light is well, more of a guideline than a rule.We do not stand and wait for the light. We just launch ourselves out and across the street.
2. There are a lot more Japanese tourists and Australian tourists here than we see in Chicago. Also, I'm sure that there must be a rip in the fabric of time in Japan. The style in Japan, from what I can tell veers towards some trampy version of Jan and Marsha Brady, who like to look pouty and pose for photos sporting peace signs with their hands.
For the most part I can't tell much about the Australians. They seem like Americans, only louder.
The day we got married we stopped in at City Hall in DL to pick up the "Just Married" buttons. There must have been some confusion, because it has a picture of Cinderella and Prince Charming. I asked if they had one with just two Prince Charmings, but they don't.
We've had a lot of people wishing us well, which has been very nice. We've also had some dirty looks, which are less nice, but who care.
We're really looking forward to tonight but are still clueless as to what's happening. We're not going to be wearing the wedding outfits. It's just too hot, and from what I understand, there won't be anyplace to change.

I'm sure you're right Marilyn. I'm going to try to go to bed early tonight too. Tomorrow after church we're headed to the Detroit Zoo, which is really quite large, so we'll be walking all day. I'm so excited to see the polar bears again and the penguins! They have so many things there that our tiny local zoo doesn't have.
Oh, and I suppose Tyler will have to do homework tonight. The information packet his 1st grade teacher gave out made it sound like she sends homework every Friday just like his kindergarten teacher did. His dad only had him do it over there once or twice, the rest of the school year fell on us. Not fair.

Hi Holly, Hi Deborah, Hi Marilyn. John is off at the grocery store picking up supplies before the weather gets any worse.

The US Open Tennis matches take place in Queens, NYC......Michelle lives in upstate NY......not the same area. New York is very unique because it has New York City (Manhattan) and the burroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island), Long Island and upstate New York. Each area is so different. I grew up on Long Island, mostly beaches, then moved into NYC while I was a young adult. Now I'm in PA which is more like upstate NY, very rural.

Marilyn, I like the idea of the Champagne Girls remaining only the girls too, but I felt bad for John not being able to join in the fun activities. So how about we do girls only at the Champagne Girls party and then do another party, a wine tasting maybe, with mixed company. Then we can have the best of both worlds and have more parties!
Don't forget we'll be doing the parties on the Tortola cruise in 09 and we're not sure where we're going yet in 10.....gotta wait to see the choices in Oct and check in here to see what everyone is picking. John and I don't care where we go, we just want to be with all of you disers. The only thing is that we're not really keen on doing another PC crossing. It was great to do it once, but we probably won't do it again.
I would pick the Southern Caribbean to do again if it's available. I hope some disers are interested in doing that one. I LOVED ALL the ports that we did on that cruise and we only did 11 nights so it wasn't as expensive as the PC.

I know we won't be doing a Transatlantic or the Med. It would be way too expensive with the airfare on top of it and we really DID NOT enjoy flying home after the PC crossing. We paid $100 for an extra suitcase, had to walk way too far in the airport with all of our luggage and then had some tanning products thrown out from the carry on bag. And that was just getting to the plane. The plane was crowded and we felt like stuffed sardines. And John does NOT like flying. We're used to driving to and from FL and we like it that way. So we would look for a cruise that will pick us up and drop us off at the port in Port Canaveral. Then we can do Cocoa Beach before the cruise and WDW after.

I'm having BistroMD diet food again....probably chicken and veggies. It's good food, but it's very plain and without the goodies for desert. But I'm on a mission to lose the added pounds, so I'm sticking to it. John is going to see what's on sale in the grocery store and then he's going to make a crock pot meal for himself to eat that will also last during the week. I just got off the telephone with DGS Tom from FL. Some of you may remember the saga that ensued after our Halloween 07 cruise together. While I was reading the posts about the kids on the EB PC, I thought about DGS's Tom and Kris running around the boat on our halloween cruise together and said yup, ours were like that too. Their parents said nothing. Me and John pitched at b...ch at them, but it didn't matter. Then we had it out with their parents after we got back. Oh what a nightmare!
We saw all of them before the PC cruise in May. They came to our hotel in Cocoa Beach. We all had a pleasant visit. It's a good thing because we're going to see them again in about 2 and a half weeks in Orlando. Hopefully this will be a nice visit too.

Hi Deb! I just had a bit of running around to do, didn't get my grocery shopping done though, got too hungry and had to come home for lunch. I think I should be able to get groceries on my way to pick Tyler up later. Am just about to watch a rented movie, one I've never heard of (Interstate 60), and eat lunch. :thumbsup2
Hi Holly. I read your post after I finished posting mine. I think we were typing at the same time. What's for lunch?
I've never heard of Interstate 60 either. Let us know if you like it.

Well, the dust has settled, and distance has helped, so I bet you will have a great visit.:yay:

A sandwich from Subway. :goodvibes
So far, the movie is really good, right from the start! It's made by the same people who made "Back to the Future" and it even had Michael J. Fox for a short part in the beginning, and Christopher Lloyd too.
Just popped into the kitchen for another glass of pop, so back to the movie I go!

Shaelyn renamed chicken drumsticks as chicken bones when she was little, so we had chickenbone for dinner and later there was chickenbone for 'dessert' ;) ;) :lmao: :lmao:
My kids call them chicken bones too :flower3:

Hi Shannon. What kind of an allowance do kids get these days? I remember getting 50 cents a week when I got mine.
Hi Holly, what's on the agenda for today? Sounds like a movie and nap day for you.
My kids get $2.00 a week but they don't do that much yet. Ethan takes the trash out and Brooke puts the dishes away in the dish washer. She also helps me in a lot of other ways but that is all she is required to do right now.

I know Jon would be interested but he won't wear a wig! I like both ways so it doesn't matter to me. I just wish it was earlier so I didn't have to leave early for dinner :sad1:

We need you there. The champagne tasting won't be the same without you :sad1:

Good morning ladies, Well, I've been cooking and prepping for the party for 3 hours and am just about ready! Our van is stuffed to the gills with supplies. We'll go over to the venue about 3:00. Keep your fingers crossed. My guess is they are having a fun breakfast and over to the parks this morning. I probably won't get to post pics until tomorrow morning because we will go back to the DL to see the fireworks after the party. Talk to you tomorrow.
Hey what a coincidence, I've been doing that same thing today ;) I know you have way more to do :goodvibes

Yup, you're right. Too bad we still don't like the son inlaw now that we have seen his true colors. At least we only have to put up with him in short doses. I do miss Sandi and the boys though.

WOW, me and my brother used to do a lot more work around the house for our 50 cents. Mom was divorced and single raising us alone. We used to vacuum and dust and clean the bathroom and kitchen every Saturday. I used to get stuck with dusting and kitchen because my brother was older and he picked vacuuming and bathroom. He also took out the trash every night and I did the kitchen every night. I also had to do the laundry for the whole family. We had a lot more chores than most kids do today.

Oh me too. My mom was a stay-at-home mom but she still had us clean a room everyday. There were three of us at the time (I have a 16 year old brother) and we had two living rooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms. So she cleaned one and we cleaned the rest. We all did our own laundry. I was probably around 8 when that started and I know Ethan couldn't do all that now. I will say that we DID NOT have as much homework as the kids do now days. Plus we could go outside and play which is impossible today :sad1:

Ah, the whole dinner/tea/supper thing!!! We had a long chat with Cherie on PC crossing day about this.
I was brought up in a home where we ate our main meal at lunch time - so called it dinner(dinnertime, dinner break, see?). So tea was a lighter meal. Now I sort of mix terms. We have lunch at lunchtime, and then tea early evening which is a cooked meal(normally). We don't use the term dinner for our evening meal. But sometimes we still do for lunch!!:lmao: John will say 'is it dinner time yet?'
Afternoon tea was and is a light mid afternoon snack really - sandwiches, scones, cakes etc. High tea was a light cooked meal - ham, egg and chips, salad etc. When I was growing up we never had afternoon tea, but occasionally went out for high tea on a Sunday.
All very simple really.
Oh, and we love cauliflower. Better with cheese sauce, but today we didn't have that. We had Brussels sprouts yesterday.
Sounds good to me. But Marilyn has to come to both :rolleyes1

I wonder what grade daily homework will start for Tyler. It will suck losing a bit of our together time.
Why can't your kids play outside? Is it the heat?
