We're going to Universal Studios on a weekday in late September. We'll be driving a rental from the DLR area. US opens at 10 and we'd like to be in the park right after opening. I fear the rush hour traffic may put a bump in our plans. I'm not afraid, I'm just not sure how much time to allot for the trip.

Any ideas?

Park closes at 6. Should we wait for traffic to clear or just go for it?

The traffic is still quite heavy in that direction. But no more
than 90 minutes from DLR to USH. I'd say that 60 minutes
is realistic.

I'd leave extra early and have breakfast in the USH area. If you want to avoid traffic at USH closing, go have dinner before heading back to DLR. Vacations should be stress-free. JMHO.

Leaving the park at 6pm will be a nightmare on the road. Have dinner at Universal City Walk and then hit the road.

Take it from someone who commuted to work from OC to Hollywood...expect a 90 minute commute. Leaving at 9am from DLR is better than the hours between 630am-830am. There really is no shortcut because everyone is trying to get to work in LA. Now as far as coming back that night, I'd stay up there and enjoy Citywalk and have dinner. If you leave at 730pm, you'll be back in OC by 830 unless there's an accident and that's another story.
