I didn't see a post about this one here so I thought I'd create one. I imagine that you that live in the area are pretty busy but in case someone pops by, what are they saying in New Orleans? Has anything to speak of been done about the levees?

I've heard they won't hold. That the work isn't finished yet. My prayers are with the Gulf states.

I heard a similar report where they said that the levees would only be able to withstand a category 2 hurricane.

If Mississippi and Louisiana DIS'ers would check in when they're able, please do so. Your friends in other places will worry and pray for your safety until we hear from you.

Be safe people! Please evacuate...get as far out of the area as you can. "Things" lost are sad..but your lifes are more important...please try to get out of the area.

I just saw a news reporter interviewing a young mother. She was holding a 3 week old baby and was preparing to board an evacuation bus. The reporter asked her where she was heading. The girl answered that she didn't know, officials weren't telling them anything more than to get on the bus.

How frightening this must be for these people. My prayers are with them.

I don't post much but thought I'd check in. We're on the other side of the lake just above I-12 in Tangipahoa Parish. We've decided to leave our house, it surrounded by huge pine trees, and stay with friends and ride it out. There are mandatory evacuations for most of the southern parishes and on this side of the lake anything below hwy 22 and anyone in mobile homes or cottages. It seems a little more organized this time. Will try to check back after the storm.

Checking in. We live on the westbank and are pretty freaked. We are safe in Little Rock. I just don't know if I can do this again.

NolaCindy: We are in Tangi. too.

We are staying. We cut all our pines around our house after Katrina. We had damage to our shop from two and did not want to face that again. Hopefully this one stays weakened as it has overnight. Bob Breck is thinking it might hit as a Cat. 2, which would be better. I am worried about being on the east side of the storm though.

I hope everyone that needed to evacuate has. We can see the influx of people here. Everything is shutting down today.

We are praying that everyone stays safe.

My brother-in-law lives on the westbank with his family. They evacuated and have been here with my inlaws since Friday. They are very concerned about water this time. They didn't have any from Katrina.

Glad to see you are safe. I hope things are better for you this time around.

Yes, everyone...please check in when it's over.

It's downright freaky and incredibly sad that the same area has to deal with this again so soon. My prayers are with all of you guys close to the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and yes, Texas. :(

We're here in Atlanta, GA, at my sister's house. My husband left to go back home (Nine Mile Point--a little west of New Orleans) about an hour ago. He is essential personnel.

We've gotten first-hand reports of that area and Algiers Point:

Nine Mile Point has had NO FLOODING. No visible major damage to homes. Our house is fine. The power is out in the area, though.

Algiers Point has had NO FLOODING. Damage to roof of Holy Name of Mary Church. Water invaded it.

I hope everyone is safe. Thanks to all who've been praying for us and/or thinking about us!

To my NOLA ladies,,,please don't go back unless you are esstial personel. I am hearing reports of cars stranded on the outskirts of the area, out of gas/food/water, and they do NOT want to let them in.

There is no gas, there is no electricity, no sewage.

WWL is calling tornado warnings in St Tammany and Tangi.

DS, DD and I are here in Orlando. Baton Rouge took a major hit. I can only get sporadic calls from hubby back at home. No power, no phones, no internet. Trees are down everywhere. We got one through our roof as did DD's boyfriend's grandparents. I'd love to hear from anyone who has information on Baton Rouge on what the conditions are like.

We'd also like to hear about the driving conditions b/w the New Orleans airport and Baton Rouge. I don't know when it will be possible to fly home or if we can get to BR from the airport.

Thanks!

My family is from St. John and St. James (part of the River Parishes - locals would understand) west of New Orleans. My family was headed to Dallas for the Labor Day weekend anyway and we just hung out here a little longer. We are planning on heading back tomorrow if the roads are open.

As of right now, neither my parents nor my house has power. There are utility poles down everywhere., but hopefully it will be a little better once we return. We didn't suffer any major damage (that we know of). A door blew off of my aunt's house and we have lost the food in our freezers (due to the power outage), but overall we've been blessed - yet again. He just keeps blessing me!

Thanks to everyone for the prayers and please keep them coming.

Survived the storm. I'm in Denham Springs, we lost power yesterday around one and it was back up here anyway by 1 today. Lots of trees down and of course lots of power outages. Not many stores are open. I think Wal-mart is closed until tomorrow. Gas stations have very very long lines. Hope everyone is safe tonight.

We live in terrebonne parish basically ground zero for gustav. we evacuated to mississippi our roof got messed up , a couple of broken windows, down trees lost all food but all in all faired pretty good . they had a pretty good evacuation plan but a bad plan when it was time to come home. and as usual fema is no where to be found . you spend all of your money to evacuate only to find out your insurance deductable has gone up and fema won't help because i make too much and i have insurance (sorry just venting). now we have hurricane ike pushing water in like crazy alot of levees are breached and flooding coastal areas just to add to our problems. thanks for your concerns we have bounced back before and will do it again. hope everybody in texas weathers out ike ok

good luck everybody
