I have a Pentax *istD Can I use a 4GB SD card? How do I find the answer to this myself (short of buying it and trying it out)? There isn't any info in the manual. Thanks for your help

The spec sheet in the review on http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/istd.html#specs says Compact Flash type I and II or MicroDrives.

Based on that review spec, no.

THanks. I'll check out that link. Unfortunately, I have no idea what you have written means. I currently have a 2GB SD card. I need more to take to disney. Instead of buying multiple 2GB, I was thinking about 1 4GB. THe reason why I am asking is because my backup camera can't handle more than 1GB card -- so I was wondering if this had a limit too.

DP-Review (http://www.dpreview.com) agrees with the PP, that the Pentax *istD camera, which is quite old in "technology years", uses CF (compact flash) memory cards and not SD (Secure Digital) cards. So, no.

Are you sure that you have the *ist D and not a different model such as the *ist DL or *ist DS?

Please forgive the camera dummy. I have an *ist DL. I don't know how I missed the big red L! I does use SD cards.

The correct answer is both yes and no. The original camera cannot use more than a 2gb card. However there is a firmware update from the company that will allow the camera to use larger 4gb cards. So the question is whether you have the latest firmware in the camera... If not you need to install and then you can... if you are afraid to try to upgrade the firmware then just stick with 2gb cards. Odds are if you haven't upgraded the firmware then it is probably limited to 2gbs.

Of course I haven't updated the firmware. I guess I'll look into this and in the meantime stick with the 2GB cards. THanks for your help and patience!

If you have an ist*DL then YES! you can use SDHC cards.. BUT! - you must first download and install the firmware update from the Pentax website. I just did it myself about a month ago and now use a 4GB SDHC with zero problems. Download the small update file, put it on a current regular SD card, and follow the instructions (something like you hold down the menu button while turning it on but double check) and it will install the update in seconds and you're all set. :thumbsup2

Like they said. :) I also used a 4g SDHC card in my old DL many times after the firmware update with no problems.

You can download the update here (http://www.pentaximaging.com/customer_care/show_firmware?firmId=6552159). It's pretty quick and easy.
