Driving thru the snow

To those that drive down, how far down do you have to go before the snow goes away and it gets a little warmer. We are heading down in Jan and doing the I75 with 1 stopover somewhere south of Atlanta (haven't decided where yet)

We have only seen snow as far as Dayton Ohio maybe Cincy and after that it pretty much goes away. You may see some in teh mountains in Tenn but not too much.

It depends on what kind of winter we're having.....one year there was snow well into Kentucky.....and a few years ago we got stuck in an icestorm in Atlanta......but in recent years, like F4disneyfan said, usually once you hit Cincinnatti its all clear......just check the forecast before you leave and give yourself plenty of time......

Also, we like to stop over in Macon, Georgia.....its only about an hour or so south of Atlanta and stay at the Red Roof Inn, Exit #169. Its about a 6 hr drive from there to Disney. :cool1:

Hey! We drove down to Florida last winter and had snow all the into Tenn but it was also a really bad snow storm, weve drove to Florida lots of times in the winter and that was the worst snow weve ever run into.

Also, we like to stop over in Macon, Georgia.....its only about an hour or so south of Atlanta and stay at the Red Roof Inn, Exit #169. Its about a 6 hr drive from there to Disney. :cool1:


We were thinking of Macon also. Initially we were looking at the Macon Travelodge but nothing is carved in stone. Would you recommend the RRI?

We would definitely recommend RRI in Macon. We use RRI's all the way down and back because we know what to expect when we get there. We always hit the Macon bypass and stop for lunch at the rest area just at teh start of the bypass. We then stop in Valdosta for our night of rest at the Fairfield inn at exit #18. You can find great coupons for rates of 39 and 49 a night for most of the hotels at that exit.

we have stopped twice in locust grove ga. it's just south on atlanta and has a great red roof inn and an outlet mall if you're into shopping.

We have been down twice in Jan/Feb, and managed to hit a storm each time. Usually you are fine once you are south of Ohio, but as other posters have said, definitely keep an ear to the forecasts on the radio and give yourself lots of travel time (look at it as extra time at WDW if you arrive on time). We have hit a terrible storm through the Tennessee mountains, and we hit another big one that we stayed with through Ohio and across into Ontario. These both added several hours of travel time, but as this was the way home, we weren't too upset! We also aim for the Valdosta area in Georgia to stop now (we used to stop in Sweetwater Tennessee, but that was an equal split of travel time, and now we prefer to get the worst of it over on the first day).

Definitely get an up-to-date version of "Along the I75" by Dave Hunter. This guide is well worth the $20 and you can use it to look ahead for rest areas, restaurants, gas stations, etc etc along the whole stretch. It was especially useful for us as we wanted a 24 hour station that sold diesel, and we prefer the Flying J.

I agree....Locust Grove is a good place to stay also, and the RRI there is nice with an indoor pool. Its about halfway between Atlanta and Macon. :thumbsup2
