UK licence is fine - either the old paper one or the new photocard plus paper counterpart :thumbsup2

Just to reiterate: Be sure to bring the paper counterpart if you do have a photocard driving license as technically it's not the 'full' license otherwise.

I managed to forget my license last year(1st time in 18yrs!)
I wet myself standing in car hire line when I realised what I had done, my hubby had his(but had no intention of driving), thank god, what a idiot!! It was NOT a nice feeling I can tell you!

I got a travel documents holder for my christmas, I put all my stuff in it, then it did not fit in my bag very well so I took all the stuff back out(except the driving lic!) I knew I had done I did not even have to look when I was in line.
aaaaaarrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Interestingly, Dollar have never asked to see that part of the license in 7 visits. It states in the small-print to bring it with you, but is in fact pretty meaningless to the US system as it just has your points on which they couldnt careless about. Your card is the most important part as it has all your details on.

It's a stupid system we have and the paper bit is just so annoying. I think I have lost two so far !!! (went to Orlando twice without it, just the card part and had no probs at all).

But....maybe one day they will actually hold us to this requirement.?!?!?

Dollar may not ask (I wasn't either) but a police officer might if you are pulled over for some reason or involved in an accident, in which case any points on the license may well matter. Better safe than sorry..

I would be more concerned about getting pulled over than the car hire compnay. Cops can be very particular about this, I am pretty sure its law here that you HAVE to carry your licence when you drive.

From what I hear you are less likely to get a ticket when you use an international licence, I guess its a lot more paper work :)

I totaly agree, only in the uk you need 2 bits?? what is that all about, it is just dumb, I know why, where and what but it is stupid, If our country can confuse anything they will do it for sure!
But I would be scared not to take both parts I have to say.

Is the paper part not where any endorsements (what a nice way of saying you've broken the law :lmao:) you may pick up, meaning you still need it, but the new photocard is nice and wallet sized so you can carry it round for everyday use

Dollar *should * be interested in the paper counterpart as it it where the Drink-Drive convictions are recorded (amongst other things). This could affect your eligibility to hire a car. I wonder where the blame would lie if there was an incident and it was discovered that there were convictions that were not picked up at the rental desk ... with the hire company for not checking or with the hirer for not declaring them :confused3

Incidentally, I have been asked to produce the paper bit by Dollar on more than one occasion. Not a chance I would take :)

the driver incurres the liability when accepting the terms (either online or by signing for the car) of declaring all incidents and penalities. If found to have penalities and you have an accident the insurance is void and you are liable for the costs involved. Even if they dont ask for proof its in the terms and agreement that you divulge all information.

OH crashed our hire car last year at his fault and is not permitted to rent within 1 year in the states - none of them will insure him when he says what hes done - and has to state for the next 5 years when he rents again after the year is up
