This is my absolute fave. Can you make it 200 pixels? Also, can you post the b'day one blank for my trio? Will you personalize these with our names?

We got some not-so-good-but-could-be worse news today. DH will "temporarily" be laid off from April 10th thru June 1st.

They will pay his insurance and he will be eligible for unemployment benefits but that is no where near his normal pay.

Ugh!! Of course we went and applied for our passports yesterday plus today was the 1st day we have to pay a penalty if we cancel.

I think we are going to try and hold on to it as long as we can to see how things go. If it's truely only until June 1st, we should be ok.

This sucks.:sad2:

Sorry to here this !!:grouphug:

WELCOME! I am a single parent also of a 14 DS.

I was in a very very abusive marriage but finally had the courage to escape when my son was 6 months old. Therefore my ex has not seen my son since the day I left with him. I also am truely a single parent and I don't get a penny from him. Due to all the abuse, photos, police reports, death threats and attempts the Judge terminated my ex's parental rights therefore causine me to give up any financial support. It is very hard financially. We are basically in hiding - he can't know where will live, work, school...but it is much better than worrying each day or having to wonder if he'll bring him home from a visitation or what he would do to him while he had him...

It is very hard my DS has never seen his father but he knows everything and why the situation is why it is...I have never hidden anything from my DS and we are sooo close, I don't know what I would do without him!

Bless you hearts!! We are so glad you are going and have lots of fun!!

Our DD will be 14 on Sept 1st, she is going to try & go to the stack. We read on Disney's site the age starts at 13 (when we first booked), which we have learned from dis-board has changed. Needless to say she was bummed, will have to see how it goes.

Morning! Headed back to bed as I work tonight and Sat (off Friday). Today is the kids last day until April 13. We are headed to Chattanooga, TN on Mon-Wed and staying at the Chattanooga Choo Choo (think song) in one of their original train cars. It was a real train station from 1908-1970. They've preserved the station and trains and turned it into a hotel. We will go to Lookout Mtn to see Rock City, ride the Incline Railway, and Ruby Falls. We may go to the aquarium or just let the kids swim in the indoor pool (supposed to be in the upper 40's/low 50's- boo!).

Pray please that Sat night at 12am that AT&T does NOT strike. If they do, DH flies out Sunday back to Oklahoma City to work indefinitely until the strike ends. He'd miss this trip, Easter, and it would be a major pain. My in-laws will come to help out (thank goodness they can), so I can work.

If you book directly through Swan and Dolphin at any of their rates, ie $129 you then have to pay a $10 a night Resort Fee and tax. The $110 rate through DCL is all inclusive! I did not think it was that way at first but when we added the first 2 nights all that was added to the total of our cruise was $220.:banana::banana::banana:

would this be a strike for AT&T countrywide?Yes, nationwide. It is the AT&T union. All management employees have received training on-site (he was gone for 10 days) on how to do the Union jobs so the company won't shut down. They will leave immediately and work 12 hour shifts 7 days a week until the strike ends. My DH will be going to Oklahoma City to do customer service for accts that are suspended if they strike.

Diane, I'm so sorry for what you had to go through, and really admire your courage. i left my marriage due to abuse as well, although it was no where near as bad as what you went through. I remember the time i was sitting in court waiting for my ex's case to be called, and feeling like i would throw up, I was so scared. Mind you, I am a trial lawyer- I am in courtrooms all the time. I understand the system and can get all the legal help i need. What I realized is that if I'm this scared, how can the average woman who doesn't understand the system and isn't comfortable speaking in court ever get through this? My ex now has joint custody (as long as he stays in therapy and takes meds), but I still worry a lot. My dd adores him, but at some level doesn't really trust him, if that makes any sense. I wonder how this will affect her relationships in the future, which will be made even harder because she has ADHD and anxiety. As moms, we can never stop worrying, and when kids succeed at anything, its such a victory!!! so congrats to all the proud parents on this board!

We love staying at Shades of Green and have stayed there at least 7 or 8 times. :love:We pay the highest rate, currently $125 and there's no tax (my husband retired as an 0-5). They have the biggest rooms on property and they sleep 5. And we love the convenience to MK. Its a 5 min walk over to the Poly and you can catch the monorail from there. They even have the shady shuttle (little golf cart) to take you to the end of the golf course, so you don't even have to do that walk! When our kids were little and in the double stroller, we loved getting them packed up in the room, and never having to fold up the stroller! Strolled over to the poly and on to the monorail! And their breakfast buffet is $4.95 for kids and $8.95 for adults. You can have a huge breakfast, then you are good with a light lunch or early dinner in the parks. We always rent a car when we stay there so we can drive to the other parks. Military can get up to 3 rooms there, and when they are booked, you can get discounted rates at any of the other Disney resorts. We've stayed at the Wilderness Lodge for $135 a few years ago and our last visit, we got AKL for $225 a night over Thanksgiving 2008 by going thru Shades of Green. We always buy our discounted park tickets there too. This year, with the 40% discount for hotels for military, we are staying at the Wilderness cabins in Sept but now that they added the free dining plan, we are going to price it out to see if that might be more cost effective to pay the rack rate and get the free dining (we do all lunches and dinners in the parks or at resort restaurants). :goodvibes

Boy you guys are chatty! LOL. With all the twins and triplets on this cruise, there are certainly going to be alot of double takes.

For all you single moms, I am a single mom too. My DH passed away last year and it is really tough. I have great kids but both have their problems unfortunately.

I have early dining and traveling with my kids and a friend of the family. If anyone wants to hook up and reserve the same table, just let me know. We can probably get the tA to take care of that.

I think everyone is planning on just doing it "once" during the cruise. It is pretty flexible. You could do one item per cabin, something per person, or each child. It can be homemade or anything. I have read people talking about doing things like candy, stickers, or other trinkets. Some people have given homemade fabric frames or highlighters. There are several threads. (do a search on FE gifts or homemade FE gifts)

Remember, do what you are comfortable with and it is about having fun.

Hope this helps. :)

1st Cruise we just picked whatever day we wanted. Granted it was 14 nights and we had over 100 cabins!!!!!!!

Last cruise we had about 20 cabins and people picked the day they wanted.

Personally I would rather not be assigned a day but will be happy with way. I just think it is easier to have the flexability of doing it when you want or have time. This is coming from someone who is NOT flexable at all. I love to plan every detail!

I have done it both ways so either way works for me.

I'm not gonna assign a day to do it, I think I'll just let people pass them out when they want. I hope that there will be gifts every night though- that would be nice for us to get something each night:banana::banana::banana:. I think we're gonna wind up with about 25 cabins, I do need to know from people with 2 cabins or more if they are doing FE's for both. I will be doing something for each cabin (if particpating) so I'll need a count. Thanks!!

We have 2 cabins, we will have 2 fish extenders and we plan on doing 2 different gifts on different nights.

Do we know if everyone will have a FE on their door??? Each time my biggest frustration is getting to a door with no decorations and no fish extender. Maybe everyone could place a magnet on their door...like a green mickey head with their name or a # on it so we know we r def in the right place

Also on our 100 plus cabin cruise someone had a dry erase board just for dis stuff...room # changes, dis meets, etc. I would be more then happy to keep it my door if we wanted to do something like that. Or Nikki that might be something that you would want to do. Either way, I do have extra dry erase boards.

Ok I am on my blabkberry and about to go blind! Lol. I hope what I am typing is making sense on this little screen!

I will let you know about 1 vs 2 FE when cabins are assigned. If we get next door or are upgraded to adjoining, we will have 1 FE. If our cabins are spread out or on different decks, then we will have 2 FE. If we go with 2 FE, then we will do gifts twice during the cruise. Was that confusing or did I make sense (no smartie pants comments!) ;)

Gratuity is not included in the price.

I would just keep the dry erase board on sateroom 5513...It is really close to the stairs right outside the main theatre people can stop by and look before or after a show.

:-) Sorry to have added confusion!

As much as the rates are tempting for other transportation I love the convience of DCL's transfers. Everything is just so easy. I leave my bags outside my hotel the night before and the next time I see them is at my stateroom! I love it! DH will pay for the convience of not having to mess with the bags and just be on vacation. Renting a car is out of the question for us bc it just seems like too much hastle, picking it up, filling up the tank, tolls, dropping us off, dropping hte car off, too much to worry about.

Now renting a car service is def much better but I still have to deal with all of our stuff. I want to wake up and just head to ship and not worry about anything else! :thumbsup2

I LOVE to get to the port early and board early but that won't happen this year. DCL will not pick us up till about noon to head to the port. Normally that would drive me nuts but we will be on a mission in the morning. Since it is DD's birthday we are going to head over to AK bc they have the magic hour and get the girls their birthday fun cards. Then we will head over to DTD and let them shop at World of Disney spending their free $64 each and then head back to the hotel to get picked up. It will be a little of a crazy morning but should all be well worth it in the end! :thumbsup2

If you do stay at the Hyatt MCO or another MCO area hotel, and want to share a 10 person van, let me know! We are staying at the Courtyard by Marriott which is less than 2 miles away. Services will do multiple location pickups. I'll be glad to look into rates, and find out how much luggage a 10 person van will hold. We have 5 in our party, 3 adults and DD and DS. Coming back, we have 2 additional Dis-er's joining us so I can look at a 14 passenger for the return. In any scenario, cost will be between $15-$20 pp each way and that includes gratuities. We were booked at the Hyatt with a stay certificate for $136, but that $94 savings thru Priceline was too good to pass up!

I was just taking my pillow cases out of the dryer and I thought of something... One really cool and FREE thing we did on our cruise last time was to get white pillow cases, on them I Put the kids names and the cruise date and then got fabric markers. You put the cases & markers in a zipper bag and give them to guest services and someone signs all the different character autographs on them. It looked really cool and every time they sleep on it they remember the cruise.

We are staying at the Sheraton at Cocoa Beach near the Port for a few days before the cruise. After the cruise we are staying at the DownTown Hilton for 4 days. Anyone doing anything like that?
There are really Good rates at the Disney Downtown Hilton and if you stay there you really get to use all the WDW buses and also the extra ones that are Hiltons, plus you get the same extra hours in the parks!! AAA rate starts at $104.00!! really good deal!! We only have to pay for 1 night and have the other nights using points but even so it is a really good deal for the hotel, where it is and getting the same extra hours as Disneys onsite resorts. Plus Mon-Fri- for every paying adult the kids eat free at the hotel and they even have a Sunday morning Disney Charater Breakfast that is not costly either.:)

Usually Brandon will try to get in the Goofy before it gets that lovely "haze" over it. So if it's nice out, he might want to stay outside, but I'd like him to meet some kids his age right away.

If it rains for sail away you can blame us-our cruise in Dec was one of the few times it was nice weather for the sail away. We somehow manage to have a downpour almost every time.

For those staying at the Radisson-you will enjoy it. We stayed there a lot the night before the cruise, but just recently switched to using our DVC points. The free shuttle is great and the places to eat close by make it nice and convenient.

I guess we are the only ones staying at AKL the night before--anyone else?

I planned to go and start my search for FE gifts today, but it is raining so hard I'm not sure I will leave the house. Brandon is at a science fair today that includes a sleep over, so I hoped to get a lot done, but I hate running around in the rain. I have to come up with something to give for all 3 of our rooms-unless my mom has ideas of her own. She hasn't been feeling well, so I hate to stress her with anything. If only there was a website with FE gifts without hunting around. I wish I was crafty like everyone here-so mine will be the noncrafty gifts.

Just found out my older son got an actuarial internship for the summer. What a relief! With the economy the way it is the internship he had last year was cut from the budget and I worried he would not find anything that was a paid position. One less thing to worry about. He has one more year of college to go. I think I noticed a few college age "kids" on the first page. It's nice when there are some people that age to do things with-of course he'll have his girlfriend, so even if there was no one else I wouldn't have to worry.

Where is everyone eating for Fathers day!!

We will be at Hollywood Studios that day- we are eating at Hollywood and Vine for breakfast- not sure about dinner yet. DH keeps talking about Sci Fi Diner which we love- so I may try to get something now.

Last night I was getting my hair cut and it turned out the woman waiting was going on a cruise Saturday. My hairdresser said she should ask me for tips since I've cruised. Well the lady says that she is going on DCL and I probably have not done that. I asked which ship and she didn't know. So I asked how many nights-7-well that's the Magic. she was not the least bit excited at all. Said her mother made all the arrangements and since she never cruised did not know if she'd like it and did know anything about it at all. I assured her she'd have a great time.

Can you imagine not being excited for a Disney cruise? And I'm sure no one here can imagine going onboard knowing nothing about it! I would have recommended the dis, but I got the impression she would not have checked it out anyway.

We are staying at the Radisson on Friday night before the cruise- we actually just found out Jordan's kindergarten graduation is June 9th now, we thought it was the 11th and we were going to leave afterwards. Now we may leave on Wednesday night after work, drive about 5 hours, then we would be at the Radisson by around dinner on Thursday and have all of Friday to relax. I have to convince DH!! I'm pretty good at doing that, so we'll see.

There are so many people that are like that- I think we are the minority in the planning/Dismeets/FE exchanges etc.

My sister and BIL are leaving for a 5 day cruise tomorrow- I found the cruise for her and helped her book excursions. She is so not like me "the organized sister", I'm sure she'll have a good time, but I like to not miss things and always be prepared.:surfweb:

LOL we did not even think about fathers day!!! My poor husband! For fathers day he has spent 2 years in the hospital, 3 in Iraq and now we forgot about his this year!!! We were both laughing about it last night! At least year we were boarding the Disney Cruise here in SoCal. I kind of with we were on the cruise again this year bc they offered a great spa package for dads @ a really good price! Oh well...instead we will be running around a theme park!

Thanks for the 10 week notice! It took all I had to get up and go to the gym this am. Once I say that I knew I had to go!!! When I read it I said to myself..."Keep your eyes on the prize!" Lol

Are we planning on a group oicture??? I know a lot of DIS groups do it on pirate. It is fun to have shutters take some really great group shots.

As for meeting on the 1st day...I am not sure we will make it. We do not get picked up till 12 from our hotel. By the time we get to the port, checked in, lunch, kids club check in, picking uo alice tickets and all we might not make that 3pm deadline. We will be sure to find you somewhere on the ship! LOL

We are off to Disneyland today! We have 15 of us going today! The kids out number the adults....oh joy! :-)

We had originally booked the Kid's Sail Free promo for the 3 day. Then the Cat 12s came up, and our TA changed it. We had booked airfare for the May cruise with AirTran, but we aren't flying with it being 7 days (too much luggage and fees). So we'd been sitting with these tickets that would cost $75 to change or alter. Well AirTran changed the flights yesterday by 2 hours, so we were able to cancel them completely today with no penalties. Thanks, AirTran!!! More $$ for June, now!

Hello all! :wave2:
I realize I am joining this group of happy cruisers way late in the game ( I tried to read all 131 pages of posts so far but I just can't do it) - you guys seem to already know each other - that's so cool!!! I hope it's not too late for us to join up! We just booked the cruise a couple weeks ago and I think I am still in disbelief that we are going!!! This is my DREAM :cloud9: vacation!!! We are
Me - Andrea (47)
DH Kyle (47)
Megan (13)
Evan (will be 9)

I have only been on one other cruise and my kids have never been on one, so we are trying to figure it all out through the help of the Cruise forum!! Yay! One thing I just read on another thread is that you can bring your own alcohol onboard??!! I didn't think any cruise line allowed that! That is so awesome! DH doesn't drink but I do and I am happy to cut costs where ever we can! DD is a little on the fence about the kids activities...she will be 14 in August but according to what I read you need to be within 30 days of your birthday to move up to the next age group...so she will be with the 11-13 year old group. I think that will be fine - she will enjoy being the "oldest" of the group instead of the youngest in the teen group.
Anyway, I am hoping we can meet up with all you wonderful DISers!!!

Nikki - Can you fill me in on the gift exchange you are doing?
Thanks!!!! :goodvibes

Hi everyone! We are back from an AMAZING day at Disneyland with so many friends and today are heading off to the Wild Animal Park.

I wanted to clear some things up about the rate at the Swan and Dolphin...

It is $110 a night NO OTHER TAXES OR SERVICE CHARGES.

If you call them directly you can't gt this offer. They are also running a military starting at $129 and that rate is at the Dolphin only. The Swan's start at $149. For the dates before the cruise they are offering it at $169 and after $149. Those rates DO NOT include taxes and resort fee. When we had 4 nights booked post cruise the total with taxes was $710. Booking through DCL the total was $440.

This has to be done with DCL. It is a special they are running through them.

If you are using DCL's transfers to and from the port it is an AMAZING deal for a hotel that if you just called directly for the night of the 12th is starting at $239. Because Swan and Dolphin don't participate in magical express it is sometimes not an option for people but if you are doing transfers to and from the port your transfers to and from the hotel are included at NO ADDITIONAL cost.

If you are not doing DCL transfers then you would also have to provide transporation to and from the airport. It still however might become a better with a rate of $110 out the door.

I hope that clears things up. I have gotten some PM's about it becuase if you call the Swan and Dolphin directly you can't get the rate.

Ok off to see some animals!!!

Have a great Saturday everyone!!!

If we were flying in- what airport do you think we should come into?

Well it depends what you want to do and if you are renting a car. Orange County/John Wayne is the closest to Disney. The next closest is Long Beach. The San Diego airport has the best prices but you would need to rent a car to get to DL and Hollywood.

The Wild Animal Park is better then the San Diego Zoo. The Wild Animal is NOT in San Diego even though that is the way it is advertised. It is North East of San Diego about 30-40 miles.

Renting a car is basically a must in SoCal.

I can tell you call the great places to go in LA to see the Hollywood Sign and stuff. :thumbsup2

I have been out of town for a couple of days and did I have a lot of reading to catch up. DW and I went shopping last weekend and she found a dress for formal night so today I went ahead and ordered the Tux. This will be the first time in 20m years I have worn a Tux, hopefully I can get through the tailors etc. in time for the trip. I may get to wear it twice since we are booked for a dinner at Palo also. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

How was everyone's Saturday? I met some old friends from elementary/middle school that I haven't seen since then for lunch. We had a 3 hour gabfest at Applebees- it was awesome to see people I haven't seen in over 20 years. Then we had to go to a birthday party for one of Jordan's cousins. That was fun too. Tomorrow we are chillin!!:surfweb:

I did find her a location to practice parallel parking.

I had to book through my TA and have them call DCL to get it. But I called DCL to ask about it and it is only a certain number of rooms. So not a for sure deal. You can't beat that deal!!
I have stayed at Beach Club and it is nice and love the pool but the cost is high. S & D are right next door to BC and YC resorts so think of it this way, you could say at S &D for 4 nights for the price of 1 night at the BC or YC!!:lmao::rotfl:

DH and I have been coming up with ideas today but head counts would be great to know.

THANKS!

No, you don't have to use TA. It is who it is booked through. DCL honors TA 's by not changing any of the TA resv.'s. That is why I had to have my TA to have them book it but if you resv. is made through DCL then just call DCL.
To find out for sure just call DCL and ask them and they can tell if they can or who to call ( I don't know how points would work).:)

Ugh! Such a sore subject in my house about the smiling the the passport picture. Brooklyn's passport expires in Sept so she needed a new one. I sent DH to do it. She came back looking like a refugee in the picture! UGH! He said the lady told them that you can't smile. I asked the passport officer when I was processing her application and he said that is NOT true. You just can't be making funny faces or anything. I was thinking about ya'll when I heard there is still no agreement. Hopefully sometime this week. I know the our County (which I work for) wants the agreement done. We had made arrangements for complete county-wide phone systems for all County buildings through the local AT&T offices. I think it all was put on hold preparing for these talks. :surfweb:

Oh, are you saying that if they do go on strike can the mean you may not go?? Hope not.No, if AT&T strikes (the Union) then all management employees will work the union jobs until the strike is over. DH would have to report to Oklahoma City immediately and work 12 hour shifts indefinitely in customer service (he is a Corporate Finance Director). That would leave me at home with the kids and difficult to find care for them at night while I work (nurse). Hopefully, they will come to an agreement. DH has decided that we are all going on the trip tomorrow unless they strike by the am. IF they strike while we are gone, DH will rent a car and come back to fly out ASAP.

Hi everyone ~~

Boy, I've sure missed a lot. Things at work are finally calming down, so I once again have a chance to catch up.

I am turning my concentration to cruise details! Thanks for posting the FE age list ... I have to put my creative thinking cap on.

I was reading through another thread about someone who had 2 GTY 12s who were assigned different decks ... I'm hoping that's not the case with our 2 cabins, but am planning accordingly, just in case.

I need to finalize my excursions for Grand Cayman and Cozumel ... four children with four different ideas :confused3

I need to read through many days of updates, but just quickly ... has a DISmeet been planned? I remember reading something about a Palo gathering, but not sure if I missed out on that one or not.

Also, I currently have 2 rooms reserved at the Dolphin, which I got several months ago ... did I read correctly that I can contact DCL directly and ask about a cruise discount at the Dolphin?

Thanks so much for the help!

Maureen

We have 2 Cat 12s also, so we don't know how it will work but either way it is worth the money savings!!
Good luck on what to do for the 4 different kiddo ideas. Sorry no help there.:)
Hey, we also and some others here are staying at the S&D!! Great deal!! So glad it was posted!! and I think someone already answered about how to get the hotel deal.:) good luck! and hope you all get it!

Hey Fellow cruisers,

Well, we've had quite a bit of sadness these last several days. DH's mom passed away last week and there was a service for her yesterday and she was laid to rest today. We all feel emotionally exhausted. I just wanted to come to my happy place here and visit with ya'll. This board really helps take my mind off things! I am really looking forward to this cruise and meeting up with a great group of Dis-ers!:flower3:

My biggest frustration with using a TA! Sometimes I wonder if that OBC is worth it?!?!?!? So far this time around my DU TA is working out well and I hope it stays that way!!!!!

I am thinking that all of the cat 12 cruisers are the reason that there are no more 11's.

My TA is in a different time zone by 2 hrs. By the time I got my internet working it was too late. I did leave a message ~ hopefully, he takes care of it. When I up-decked, I had to talk to his co-worker cuz he was so swamped!!

I will find out by 9am EST!!!

I went on the DCL website, and tried to book our cruise, the first available cabin is Cat 10 and up. I would assume they have overbooked Cat 11's/12's. I don't know how that works with us in our Cat. 12's, hopefully good!!:goodvibes:goodvibes

I know that several of us have almost 14 year olds. (I have a boy and a girl who will turn 14 on Aug 4.) Are you going to try and sign them up for the stack or sign them up for ocean quest and try to move them to the stack if they are bored.

I really don't know what to do... I have 2 kids almost 11 (daughter 11 on July 31, nephew 11 on Aug 5), then 2 kids almost 14....

I'm thinking that the almost 11's and my son almost 14 would have fun in ocean quest. If they are with my son it will give them more freedom to stick together and come and go in a group. However, my daugther mature beyond her years would probably enjoy the stack more.

So what are you guys doing with your "almost" kids??

My DS turns 14 on April 26th and he will be in The Stack. He is looking to meet others around his age. Will he be able to go to Ocean Quest too? Do you want to PM me with your email and the kids can chat and get to know one another?

My DD turns 14 in Sept. She is also mature beyond her years. She will be going into high school in the Fall. I really think it depends on the child and their maturity, but all of her friends are older (she went to private school for K-3 so was able to begin school at age 4). We plan on going to talk to the counselors at the Stack when we get there and also let them know she already has 2 friends who will be going to be in the stack. We are keeping our hopes up, but if they say no, then she'll be OK with ocean quest or just hanging in other places than the stack.

When I was looking to up-deck, this happened quite a few times where rooms were available then not then available again. I think I should have gone for the non-connector but hoping to possibly get upgraded due to some wanting connecting rooms.
