Check-in (and out) was a breeze, the staff couldn't have been more pleasant. Starwood waved our room fee. Our room was exactly where we requested, poolside/ground level (west wing). We were facing the beach (where DH took naps under the palm trees and on the hammocks). We started out with two rooms (originally college son was to accompany us). Now this was nice!! We definitely got spoiled, and even tried to retain the second room for the entire stay, but were denied this due to hotel capacity, so the teens moved in with us for the last three nights and we got a daybed. This really wasn't too bad at all as we were ground level and were in and out of the room so often we didn't kill each other. We were never more than a minute or two walk to everything--the busses, the boats, the lobby--Tubbi's was right around the corner, as was the gym (which of course we didn't utilize, after all that walking, who needed it, lol). Walking in and out of our room to the pools was so convenient! Housekeeping was impeccable, the towels were thick and soft and smelled so good! No cutesy little towel animals, etc., I think the staff was far too busy for that (we've never had this done even at the Contemporary and didn't miss it). For a hotel that was filled to capacity, the water pressure was great.

It was so convenient being able to pull up our charges on the t.v. and the disputed charges were removed quickly without question
(one was the daybed, if this is for a child the fee is waived).

Minibar--a little problem here, but it was our fault. It is far too tempting! Because I felt too guilty emptying it ourselves, we did purchase some of its contents and placed some other contents on top of the closet (as other DIS'rs had suggested) and left a note. We then placed some little cartons of milk and juice in there for breakfast. Well, the mini bar police came in and expressed his displeasure with this! All in all, next time I'd decline the key and either get a fridge (for its freezer) or bring my own soft sided one. I had read they no longer emptied its contents for a $20 fee, but they do offer this service. I wouldn't mind paying except it doesn't keep things very cold and there is no freezer. Definitely a minor inconvenience compared to all the plusses. The refillable mugs saved us a fortune, especially with two teens, we got three altogether.

Coupon book/Disney Club: We didn't need the S/D coupons because of the Disney Club card-20% off everwhere but Shula's. This card paid for itself many times over-we used it poolside for lunch twice, (yum) also at Palio's at the Swan (exc. Italian dining), and at Tubbi's (pizza here was great ). We also got a discount at mini-golf at Fantasia across the street. DH used it for 20% off at the Magnolia. What a great savings this was! Tubbi's is expensive, the general store over at the Boardwalk is more reasonable- we stopped here for some milk/juice/beer, wine-the essentials- but I regret not stopping at a grocery store from the airport- for certain items (like fruit). We brought snacks and breakfast items because we prefer sleeping in to going out to breakfast, especially when we were out late at night. I will post a full dining report on that forum.

Transportation-definitely didn't need the car although it was handy (golf, etc.) Seeing that they waived the room fee, we treated ourselves and kept the car in valet ($10 per day). They retrieved our car lightening fast each time we needed it. I was pleasantly surprised with the Dolphin's transportation, as last time we were at a monorail resort and could have rollerbladed faster to our destinations than wait for their busses. It seemed no matter where we were going, we'd get out front and within minutes, that particular bus would arrive. When we left the Magic Kingdom, it was a sight for sore eyes seeing that S/D bus the first in line. The boats are leisurely and we expected that. MGM is great as it is the first stop from the S/D. We always walked to Epcot (except the night it rained, took the boat back and everyone whined at how long it took stopping at the other resorts when we could walk so quickly!) 10 minutes maybe, a gorgeous stroll.

Big word of advice: Do not use your phone unless you are are having a heart attack and in need of an ambulance. I made one phone call and almost needed to be revived myself (it was $11). This was a mini-emergency, as my daughter was at the MK and couldn't find my cousin, and I had to call their cell phone which was a Florida based cell- thankfully they found her. Each time we called another Disney resort, we simply called the operator and had them connect us and there was no charge for this.

The Boardwalk was so much fun. We went there several times, one night we met a big group at Jelly Rolls and the teens ate at ESPN and walked around. Jelly Rolls is a hoot, reminiscent of old college happy hours (without the beer chugging contests, lol). These dual piano players were amazing and it seemed that everyone knew the words to every single song. There was fun-filled entertainment all around the Boardwalk. This area is perfect for all ages, and we felt very safe letting the teens go. The two-way radios were invaluable. It is just beautiful all lit up at night.

I got Brita water bottles (sport type) for our room and the pool area and filled these with ice, what a great money saver this was.

Conventions-there were two conventions going on which didn't bother us at all. One day they closed down the lap pool area and on this day the Grotto pool was crowded, but manageable. The staff was very kind and apologetic in their explanation and gave us plenty of lead time before we had to move our chairs. Other than that, having been on the other end ourselves, we felt empathy that these poor people were working and not enjoying such a wonderful resort!

We loved the Dolphin so much that we cancelled two of our park days (secretly I wanted to bank them for an excuse to come back next year). DH (who travels frequently) loved this resort. We were originally booked at the Poly, and we went over there for the luau, and I was surprised he was more impressed with the Dolphin (glad I cancelled). I would definitely love to stay at both the Poly and the GF for a long weekend before I die, but I'll return to the Dolphin over and over. The teens raved about it and both hugged and thanked us when we first arrived at the room they were so excited.

Oh, there is one regret---that I didn't run into any of the S/D cheerleaders, though I desperately looked for them. I was thrilled to see Pooh's Pal at Pleasure Island at the Comedy show, though! I had no means of communication because at the last minute DH decided to leave his laptop at home, which thrilled the family because this was a much-needed vacation for him.

Finally, we were delighted to get late check-out (we just got upgraded to SPG gold) and when I called, he had me name the time of the checkout! Our flight was at 6, so we chose 3. He asked me several times how our stay was and were there any problems. Now, if this had been the week before I think we would have been denied late checkout.

I really apologize for the length of this, but I couldn't wait to tell you all how great this resort was. I honestly cannot come up with one negative thing! Please feel free to ask any questions, I'll be happy to answer them for you if I can.

P.S. The rooms were so quiet I felt they were soundproof, didn't hear a thing above or next to us until about 8 a.m. when we would hear a shower going.

Thanks for the great info LBYC-19. My husband and I will be staying at the Dolphin for the first time in Aug and I was starting to worry about the Dolphin not having that "Disney Magic". Well, I am glad you had great trip and thanks agian for the info.

Great trip report! I have a couple questions. First the extra bed fee can be waived? how old must the child be? I was told $25 a day, and not told about it being waived.

Also how much was the fridge if we chose to get this? If we bring our own would we have to pay for them to remove the mini bar fridge?

You didnt mention the game room, i was assuming with teens you would be able to tell me how it was. If you've been in Contempo's game room how would Dolphin's compare?

And last on my interrigation, did you get refillable mugs?

We go in June first stay there, although we have stayed YC and Poly. 3 children 11,8,6. One room, we were considering sleeping bags, just thought it would be simpler and kids don't care, but if they waive the fee we may change our minds. Thankyou for the info.

l.) Daybed: When we called (midway through stay) we were told defiantly there would be a charge, we said "this is for a child" . I don't know the age cut-off (I assume l8 as that is considered an adult in Disney). They said there would still be a fee, and we agreed as we were desperate. When we checked out, I asked about it stating it stating this was for a child and that I had read on the website that it is waived in this circumstance; she apologized and said "oh, they wrote down it was for an adult" and they removed the charges-$25 per day.

2.) Minibar question-Just decline the key when asked at check-in, and there will be no charges incurred. The minibar is hidden behind cabinet doors. I think fridge is 25 per day, but you'd have to check this on Glo's FAQ.

3.) Game room-the kids LOVED this and went frequently (ages l4 and l7). However, can't compare it with CR (we were here only for a long weekend and we were so busy, they never even went to it).

4.) Refillable mugs-don't know what we would have done without them, the kids were constantly refilling them. We got three for the four of us, this was plenty. I'm drinking out of mine now wishing I were back!

We have always enjoyed our stays the Dolphin. I wish I would have known about the cot for a child because it would have saved many nights of my two sons fighting about not wanting to sleep together. Yes, Tubbi's is very expensive and last time around i spent $5.00 for a litre of water! I was desperate. Bring water from the store or home if you can. :Pinkbounc :bounce:

What a wonderful review! I know a LOT about the Dolphin, we've been staying there for years but never with teens and never near the pool so you've resolved some big issues for me. Can you elaborate some more on the room location? Is it a sliding glass door with a patio? Can you see the pool from the door? (like is it handy to run out and alert people it's time to get ready for dinner :D ) I can see Tubbys, the health studio, laundry, child care and salon in my mind so tell me how you get to the room??? I don't remember ever seeing a room door anywhere near Tubby's. Thanks so much, your post was GREAT. We're thinking of including some family with teens next year.

Specifically, it was rooms #1175 and room #1177. Keeping the health club on your right, we were directly to your left. Yes, you can absolutely see the pool from your room. My specific request was "ground level, poolside".

When the kids refilled their mugs or went to the arcade, they were back immediately. One day I timed walking from the pool, and it was literally less than one minute. Yes, we had a slider directly to the outside, and a little table/chairs which we spent a lot of time on! Looking directly out from our room, I saw the swan boats/hammocks, beach and the lap pool was directly to our right (with the grotto pool directly behind it). If you really want to call your kids, call them on the two-way radios, but you shouldn't need to, that is how close this room location is. Most of the time somebody was hanging near the room, so we didn't need to lock up and we just left the slider open, but the door (the one near the gym was right there) so it didn't matter it was THAT CLOSE. I counted that there are only about 10 rooms in this little area (five different floors, I think).

We had some teacher friends from our hometown walk by and drool at our room locations wondering how did we ever get these great rooms....we figured it was either the best-kept secret or that NOBODY wanted ground floor...either way, we were thrilled with them and the teens thought they died and went to heaven. If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Loved your post! Now I am completely excited about my ressie at the Dolphin for December. Here are a couple questions for you - with the ground floor room - is that considered a "standard room"? I will be travelling with a 2 year old (then 2.5)- and would love to be able to put her to bed - then the hubby and I could sit outside and have a "beverage" before bed. I don't want to pay for a "balcony room" - since it will up my cost. But if the ground floor is "standard" - maybe I should request that.

also - i took some other advice and got a Starwood Preferred Guest membership - however, I won't have ANY points accumulated by then. Even without points - can I make "special" requests because I am a SPG member?

And one more question (sorry - but you seem like such an expert!) - I have reserved 2 rooms - b/c mom plans to join us. IF we decide to cut costs and just keep one room - is there an extra charge if she stays in our room? Won't need the roll away because I have requested a crib for the 2yo.

thanks in advance! I am sooooo excited for this trip. My hubby may never be able to vacation any where else ever again! :D

I'm going to be truthful with you about the one room, I think it might be tight with your mom and the 2 year old, but we all know our own families. Then again, we put the rollaway in the corner and there is ample room (which is probably where they would place the crib). You are smart to have booked two rooms. I wish I had done the same for the ENTIRE trip, not just for the few days I thought college son would be joining us. It is easier to "drop" than to add, especially during a busy season.

I believe your mom would be an added charge for the one room. I think they asked the ages of the room occupants when I booked. Do you have any discounts? If you don't qualify for the nurse/government/teacher, the Disney Club (or Entertainment) has 50% rack rate which is what we used-this was a huge savings.

Finally, I don't know about all ground levels, but the area I am describing was an upgrade (because of Starwood). I did not book it as such, I simply requested "poolside/ground level" there is only one section of the building that fits this description. When I booked it originally, my card had no points, either, but we subsequently accumulated points through DH's travel (and by reading the other thread, there are many ways in which to do this). Please feel free to e-mail or PM me with any questions!

LBYC-19,

Great post. We're going in Nov. and I've got a question or two. When you say that Starwood waived the resort fee, do you mean they took the $8 per day off and you still got the newspaper, coffee and helath club? I thought anyone could waive it and do without those things. We're new to the Starwood program and I'm hoping to get a 'room with a view' this fall. Did Starwood get you a better room than you expected? From my readings here it sounds like if Dolphin has better rooms available, they just hand them out to Starwood members whether or not you have any points (I don't).

Thanks,
Bill From PA

Bill: Sorry, I meant to say the resort fee was no charge to us, but we received the amenities. In hindsite, we didn't utilize them (only the coffee, but we could have brought our own and used their coffeemaker). The teens had every intention of working out at the gym, but they didn't, and apparently the paper is available at the bellhop for no charge (we do enjoying reading U.S.A. today). If given the choice, I would have preferred Starwood pick up the fridge, but you can't complain about something you don't have to pay for!

To answer your other question, I do believe they upgrade you automatically with Starwood, but at check-in I did see a young couple ask and were told, "no, we're sorry, the resort is full to capacity, there were no upgraded rooms". This was school vacation week for a lot of people on the East Coast; I'm not sure when in November you are travelling or how full the Dolphin usually is during that time. It seems to me that Starwood points are most important when you are dealing with upgrading to Club level or getting free nights, etc.

Do you have the Disney Club card? There were some teacher friends there wishing they hadn't let their DC expire. This card really saved us a lot of money. Hope I've helped.

Joanne-
Glad to hear you had a great trip! I haven't been on the boards much because of our future bed and breakfast plans. We just got back from a week in Chicago at a convention for inn owners. Life is absolutely crazy here. Again, I'm glad everything went good. How did your sister enjoy her stay at her resort?!? I know she was originally aprehensive. I have been thinking about you. I was wondering when you were coming back. I knew your trip was about this time. These darn trips just come and go way too fast, don't they???!!!

Too bad I didn't bump into you lounging at the grotto. Sounds like your trip was similar to mine, a perfect 10!!! Only thing I would do differently is waive the resort fee. We never made coffee, used the refillables from tubbies every morning and the coffee there is awesome.

Thanks for the great trip report, Joanne!

It's hard to meet up with DISers at WDW unless you make plans ahead of time or know someone's full name so you can phone them at the hotel.

thanks for the great trip report! :)
I was there too and sorry we couldn't have met especially since I had 2 teens the same age as yours with me. I had a DIS pin but didn't always remember to wear it. Just think we could have been sitting side by side at the pool and didn't even know it.
I love these resorts very much myself and always like to just spend days hanging out there!

Welcome Home Nancy, Disnurse and Debbie:

Maybe next April vacation we can meet at the Dolphin! I've already figured out the first day I can call the airlines to book the flights!

P.s. Did I mention in my trip report how lovely the Grotto pool was?

Mickeyfaniam

So what IS that first day you can call for flights? :D
I may need to know ;)

Today they are booking for March 2l, 2003, so in doing the Math I figured out May 21 I could call the airlines, but let me tell you, Math was not my strong point in school, lol

It looks like Easter and school vacation fall together next year, that is a nightmare at WDW--we made that mistake once and swore we'd NEVER do it again. Looks like we'll be hanging at the Dolphin more than the parks, that is for sure!

I think you must be my long lost twin. I too have started planning next april and have even figured when to book flights. Believe it or not I have found a direct from boston for 180 its good up till march 20th right now so I'm hoping the prices stay low. Our vacation falls the week before easter so i would be leaving sat or easter to return home.

On American Airlines you can reserve your flight 330 days out, so I'm guessing most airlines are similar. You probably won't find a good airfare that far in advance, but it's good for people using frequent-flier miles.

I'd love to return for another April birthday trip, but Easter is on the 20th next year - only 2 days before my birthday. There's NO way I'll be there that week!

We were in room 7-183, overlooking the grotto pool and MGM. it was fantastic!! Was putting about on expedia and had seen flight over dec, feb and mid march for 180 and now even those flights have gone up to 225 or so in 1 days time. Seems like i never get a bargin on flights due to school vacation schedules that i'm locked into for travel. Our district frowns upon taking day before or after a vacation off for any reason.
