I’m getting ready to do this 21Day
rid your body of toxins cleanse thingy-
Starting right after labor day-
No gluten
No sugar
No animal products
No diary
No caffeine
No alcohol
Anyone over here done this?
Any tales to tell/advice?

Um, hello?
Caffeine, sugar, and dairy are the base of my entire life! Coffee with sugar and half & half. Every day. In mass quantity.

Good luck, Wally! I'll drink my coffee and observe! ;)

um NEVER! Looking forward to my Cosmo's Friday after work!

See cosmo, martini, mojito etc. -
all way to much booze for me.

I like "girly" drinks - at least a third mixer -
need to keep my head about me.:flower3:

I'm going to be okay with the no "fire water" thing.

Or at least they believe it.

Well I'm just learning it myself - but I think nuts and seed are fine.
I checked on dates - I like dates as a treat.
And there is a sweetener you can have agave- it just taste sweet-
no funny flavor to it - its near the honey in your store.

gluten is the hardest one to weed out.

Good for you Wally, all the power to ya! I've been doing a lot of reading on all of the crud that I put into my body and yikes...reading labels is a reality check. I decided to eliminate meat, soda, and refined sugar as a start, and on week three I'm not missing it too much. There's a lot out there that is dairy free, gluten free, etc. if you are not afraid to try something new!

More power to you guys. I am still adapting to my own changing dietary limitations. I call it practice for gastric bypass.

I have severely limited my fat intake. I have found that palm, sunflower, and vegetable oils cause me discomfort that requires a quick trip to the potty. So, olive oil and butter are being used in extreme moderation. I have decreased my beef intake. Lots of chicken, I should cluck. Even though Corey hates fish and is allergic to shellfish, I am trying to eat more of it, because I like it and in general, it's lower fat. I have increased my intake of beans. I have eaten lots of rice and backed potatoes. Whole grain bagels and lowfat cream cheese are my breakfast food of choice. I have found that a serving of juice goes a long way to help me make it to lunch without the urge to snack. Desserts have become limited to a few pieces of dried pineapple, some cherry flavored craisins, or some flavored pecans or walnuts. This is a big change for me.

I rarely eat out anymore unless it's "date night" with Corey and even then we are making different choices. Ted's Montana Grill serves buffalo. Buffalo is much lower in fat and it tastes really good, so while ungodly expensive, it's just once a month, so it's managable. We also have found some reasonable choices at a few other places close to home. Overall, any changes in diet make a difference.

I have lost 18 lbs in the past 3 weeks.

Did a test run of this "Cleanse" thing for diner last night -
Seems totally doable so far-

I did a kind of "vegan lite" thing a while ago - for about 3 months -
that was no problem so I think I'll be fine -
only thing different is now - I go to the gym most everyday -
so I'm not sure how that will factor in.

Wow, I give you lots of credit. I could actually go with it for the most part since I love vegetables and can do without meat. I'm not into sweets so no sugar is ok. The problem that I have is that I travel a bit for work and sometimes the options in restaurants aren't the best. Also, I take care of my parents and Mom insists on feeding me sometimes ... she gets upset if I don't eat what she makes. Right now she can't understand why I don't eat the cookies and pastry that she pushes on me, somehow she doesn't get that no starches includes that stuff!

However, most of these products have wheat gluten.

Anyone find a gluten free / sugar free breakfast cereal?

Oatmeal!

It's simple, easy to make, can have fruit, nuts, etc. easily added for greater variety.

I've also previously made a vegan, wheat-free cookie with ground oats and garbanzo bean flour that gets rave reviews. I've never tried cooking with agave syrup so I'm not sure how it would change things, but, you can try suggesting this to your mother.

I'm not sure how well agave syrup will toast..but I make a batch of granola every week for James.

I use 4 cups of oatmeal
3/4 cup to a whole cup of nuts or seeds
a dash of salt (can be omitted)
1/2 cup to 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut
You can add some ground flax seed, cinnamon..you get the idea..play with it.
I also add brown sugar and honey....you'll have to eyeball the amount of agave syrup to use- you don't want the mixture too wet.
and finally 2 tbls of oil...
Put all this in a large bowl and toss to coat.
spead out onto a rimmed cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees. Usually about 40 minutes until dry. You'll want to stir this well every 10 minutes or so to ensure even browning. When it's done allow to air cool. You can add dried fruit at this point if you want too.
store in an airtight ziplock or tupperware

Granola can also be sweetened with dried fruits (dates are a standard granola sweetener that we don't see often in other places, but, a variety of dried fruits tastes good too), so, if the agave syrup doesn't work so well you can just use fruit.

I'm not sure how well agave syrup will toast..but I make a batch of granola every week for James.

I use 4 cups of oatmeal
3/4 cup to a whole cup of nuts or seeds
a dash of salt (can be omitted)
1/2 cup to 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut
You can add some ground flax seed, cinnamon..you get the idea..play with it.

Uncooked oatmeal. I use old fashioned..I don't see why you couldn't use the Steel cut kind. If you want you can halve the recipe and see how that turns out...

Steel cut oats will give you a slightly nuttier richer tasting granola. Quick cooking oats will give you clumpier granola. I've been known to mix varieties of oats to create textural variety.

Anything in the cereal Isle that you know of?
Kashi?

I'm pretty sure Kashi has wheat in it.

We used to eat puffed rice and puffed corn when I was a kid. I'm not much of a cereal aisle person though so I couldn't tell you who's making it these days. But, I suspect that if you go somewhere like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's they'll have something.

OMG Soy sauce is out!
Tamari is made with more soybeans than ordinary soy sauce, resulting in a smoother, more balanced, and complex flavor. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the manufacturing of soy sauce developed from a household art to a commercial industry. To increase production, the thick, whole soybean mixture was replaced with a mixture of half wheat and half soybean. The new liquid resulting from fermentation became known as Shoyu, the common type of soy sauce used today.

It's amazing the stuff they sneak gluten into! :sad2:

Sorry, I wouldn't have figured it was really sneaking wheat into it given that most soy sauces are a mixture of soy and wheat definitionally.

But, your quote is about tamari. True tamari doesn't contain wheat and you should be able to find some wheat-free tamari if you look around. However, fair warning, tamari is much stronger than shoyu or chinese soy sauces and has a different flavour. Use less than you are used to and add water. You'll need to experiment to get the right combination for yourself.

Yeah - that's why I posted it - Tamari - seems to be the way to go.
I never really knew SOYsause had wheat.
It just amazes me where they sneak it in.

Remember I just started this "read the labels" Diet.

Right! I've been reading labels for 20+ years, so, it's rather second nature for me and I forget that others just buy food and eat. I mean, I regularly re-read labels of food that I eat all the time, just in case they've changed their recipe because I have ended up getting sick when I forgot to do so. While you're reading those labels, just look at all the things they sneak chicken into--it actually seems to keep getting worse and is at the point where I rarely trust people who call food vegetarian unless they let me read the ingredients myself. I mean, there is even a professional catering company around here that widely advertises their vegetarian menu who puts chicken broth in their supposedly vegetarian rice. When I called them on it I was told that "it's just for flavour and doesn't make it non-vegetarian". Argh!!!

Btw, Tamari is a form of soy sauce and you can get it in the same section as all the others in my local grocery store.

Yes, and, no.

If your addiction to caffeine is purely chemical and purely to caffeine, then, this is true. However, if your addiction is psychological as well (most are) then you'll need something to replace the "caffeine craving". So, when you really want the cup of coffee you make yourself a nice cup of warm organic peppermint/lemongrass tea, or, something similar. Also, if you are addicted to coffee, coffee actually contains a bunch of other oils that are even more addictive than caffeine and you may keep craving it for longer.

I'm wishing you luck.

I'm not going to join in for several reasons (not the least of which is that the animal products I eat are something I need to keep my body used to), but, I think I'm going to use it as incentive to truly cut out high-fructose corn syrup. I'm mostly good with this except when traveling in the US where all kinds of things seem to contain it--I couldn't believe it when I recently discovered that US Gatorade now has high-fructose corn syrup when their claim to fame used to be that they had balanced their product for optimum hydration usage whereas other sports drinks used HFCS. Argh!

Anyway, sorry for staying on-topic, but, I seem to recall Wally claiming that was his goal for this thread--despite the evidence to the contrary! I'm having fun listening in though. ;)

[QUOTE]

I see what you are saying with that line of thinking.

I am pretty good cutting out junk (most of it I just do not like meaning chocolate, peanut butter and coffee) but my problem comes with Coke. I simply just can't drink enough. I did switch from Diet to regular (because my BIL told me the product they use to make it sweet was developed to actually make cancer patients eat. That made sense because I could blow through an entire 12 pack no problem 1 day at work!!!!) Now with regular I only drink maybe 4 (I know it is still horrible!) Any suggestions on what would replace that in my head? Anyone? .:flower3:

I have a similar problem with Pepsi. I claim that I'm addicted to caffeine, and I am, but, the biggest issue is that I simply LIKE Pepsi. I've found that Mountain Dew (the Canadian non-caffeinated version) seems to fill the same taste desire for me. I'm not sure why it works, but, it does and since it doesn't include caffeine I drink less of it because it doesn't feed the chemical addiction.

Obviously Mountain Dew won't work for you unless you take a drive across the border or visit an import store, but, perhaps you can come up with something else to switch to and take it in steps. (I.e. Barqs has coke and root-beer flavour, then move to regular non-caffeinated root-beer, then to natural root-beer, then to juice, etc.)
