Is it safe to use a a UK mobile phone and in-car charger in a US car cigarette lighter socket? I know it's 12 volts everywhere but I don't know if the plugs and sockets are the same size. Probably really obvious but my bf wants to check as he just got a fancy new phone that we're planning to use as our satnav in the US this year and doesn't want anything to happen to it. I googled it but couldn't find a definite answer. We did the same thing last year (different phone with sat nav) but it wasn't an issue as none of our journeys were long enough to warrant charging it.

Our hire car last year had the cigarette lgihter not connected - dont know if this was a fault or they disconnect deliberatley.
