This morning we finished watching a really old, but funny Disney movie called "The Boatniks". Tyler picked it out and it's really cute! Anybody seen it? I'd never heard of it. Not sure why he's been picking these old movies lately, but they've been great choices. I'm going to look today for Gilligan's Island on DVD for us to watch tonight. I think he'd get a kick out of it for sure. ;)

Trying an experiment to see if I quote Woody from Thread 3, copy the quote and post it here, if someone clicks the little blue arrow-thingy by his name, will it link back to the other thread after that one is closed.

The mystery thickens....

Greetings from Rarotonga, a Cook Island in the South Pacific. This is our third stop. So far we have stayed on Atiu and Aitutaki. It's truly paradise.

Unfortunately, we will miss Ian and Sukie's big day, but I'm sure it will be a splendid occasion.

Woody

WOW WOODY! I did a Google search on those names. What lovely islands! Is this a cruise or a flying vacation? I would love to go there! Did you snorkel?

I believe that is a Corsair. Made famous by the TV Show "Baa Baa Blacksheep" with Robert Conrad in the 70's.

Folding the wings helped for storage on the aircraft carriers.

The VMF-312 tells you which airgroup it belonged to. This one is the "Checkerboards" who saw action in the Battle of Okinawa in WWII.

The poor Chinese man who pulled his Achilles tendon or something in warmup for the 110m hurdles heat #1. I think its so sad when any athlete gets injured and has to drop out of their event, but its particularly sad for when it happens in your own country.

Pooh...I'll be in Key West that day. Maybe I'll be able to get online, but probably not at the right time.

Which hotel are you in Dec? We've switched to CBR for the 11-14th (Mousefest).

Let us know how the movie was. We saw X-files tonight - it was ok but I don't think anyone who wasn't a fan of the show would like it.

I'm staying at CBR, but before the cruise. After the cruise, I'm staying w/my cousin and her family and I can't remember where (but it's not CBR)

The movie was funny to me, outrageous in many parts, way over the top in the satire. I can see why there's controversy over it. There's something in it to offend just about everyone and no sacred cow is left unskewered. It's pretty vulgar, too. Tom Cruise is hilarious. Not everyone in my group liked it, although no one hated it. But even those who were lukewarm admitted to laughing.

Ahhh but honey you always win gold in my eyes!

Thinking about the 2012 Olympics, if any of you are planning on coming over, bring waterproofs and warm clothing!! If this August is anything to go by, and the weatherman said yesterday that it is average weather(!:confused3 ) then they had better build roofs over all the venues.

Should be all over by Thursday. :cloud9:

Hi Marilyn, Yes, we are planning to come. The dates are 7/27/12-8/12/12, so it is a little earlier and we were thinking it would be hot and wet there, but I guess we really have to be ready for any weather. We are hoping to do a month in Italy, France and England - 1 week in Italy, 1 week in France and then 2 weeks in England getting there one week before the Olympics begin to get some sight seeing in and leave before the Olympics end to get home and watch it on TV. I've been watching the web site and get email alerts about the progress. But we are anxious to see if Chicago gets the 2016 Olympics too. It will be announced on 10/2/09, but we suspect it may go to Rio (S. Am. has never had an Olympics) or Tokyo (it's been 54 years since they've had it. Obviously we hope Chicago gets it. I have a goal to see as many Olympic Stadiums as possible, so far I've been to LA (obviously - went to many of the 84 games), Montreal, Barcelona - have only flown over Atlanta. Here's the website for the Olympics.

OK, got it. I hope it's a thing of the past, only time will tell. The big test will be when he starts school in a couple weeks and has to sit and focus and do work and try to deal with the frustration. That frustration is what ends up making him lash out most of the time, so we'll see how it goes. His dad did say he practiced writing for a half hour over the weekend, so that's a huge improvement over 5 minutes at a time. Only time will tell.

Found you!

Sitting here at work - keeping a watch on Fay. I live in Polk county where at this point we're under a Hurricane Wind Watch (Osceola is under Tropical Storm wind watch). Wondering if my appointments are going to hold for tomorrow. Will be calling the dentist atleast at lunch (appt is at 3pm...GP appt is at 1045a so don't think that will be a problem).

Get to go to Publix tonight --- nothing to do w/ Fay....need cereal & milk, plus some other food. Also need to stop by CVS to pick up an rx.

Can't believe the Magic is on her way home again.....hard to believe that we got off the ship 85 days ago.

 Speaking of weather......we are waiting for Hurricane Fay, the first one this year to even come close to Florida, and it has decided to go straight up the middle of Florida just like Charlie did 4 years ago!

I guess we are not expecting too much wind, just mostly rain rain rain rain rain. I'll have to use my big Mickey umbrella today!

Should be all over by Thursday. :cloud9:

Good morning/afternoon everyone.
Bubba and I are here. Checking in from our 7day carnival cruise.

And let me say, even though it has only been one day, I fully understand why we pay the extra to cruise Disney. So far Nothing has been even comparable. I can see why disney has cast memebers, as on carnival they are just crew members. big difference in attitude and service level. I even think the level of passangers is different too. I will do a more indepth review/comparison later, but it is very hard not to wish I was on the magic, sailing back to florida, or sailing anywhere on a disney ship.

And a special Hi and we miss you to Gaylean and Jon, we do wish you were here with us.(I had a dream before we left that you surprised us at the port and came with us.)But really you arent missing anything. :lmao:

How does the age mix compare to Disney? I know the WB PC was low numbers of kids for a Disney cruise, I'm curious how other lines are.
Have a great trip! Did you bring your KTTW so you can try to sneak back onto the Magic?:lmao:

I didn't even notice we were close to ending the other thread. I must check if I missed something but probably not tonight. What happened to all the champagne buddies? Oh well I got to drink a bottle of champagne ;)

John Lennon sang in a song to his son, just before he died, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans!" That's what happened to me. John's son was over here and he was cleaning out a turtle tank. (I have four tanks and six turtles.) John was just about to put the meat on the grill. We were going to pop the cork on the champagne and take a picture wearing my tiara. THEN the kid said......we have a leak in this tank and water is pouring out all over the floor. Great! Now we had to stop everything and immediately drain the tank and run out and buy another one and set it up. Then the new tank was bigger and didn't fit where the old one was, so we had to exchange it with another tank in another place. So we had to drain that one too and after the exchange, fill it up again. Well by the time all of this was said and done, it was way to late to start a barbeque. So we called it off and decided to do it tonight after work. It's the kid's actual birthday today anyway. SO the champagne will be popped tonight and we'll take the pictures and post them. Of course, it defeats the purpose of sharing it with you and Holly doing the Champagne Girl toasting and pictures at the same time.......but life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

Tell him that the light in the second story window is ALWAYS left on for Walt. That was where his apartment was (is) for when Disneyland was being built and the early years of the park. They were building a new apartment in New Orleans Square when Walt died.

We usually get Corsairs flying. Sometimes parked for display. A guy we know from where we used to live (Valparaiso--near where Jackie grew up and kind of close to Chicago) has one and he flew it down last year--atg leastr I think that's what it was. I will ask Tom.

The poor Chinese man who pulled his Achilles tendon or something in warmup for the 110m hurdles heat #1. I think its so sad when any athlete gets injured and has to drop out of their event, but its particularly sad for when it happens in your own country.

The downstairs restaurant from the Vineyard is really nice - dine on the patio and then see the light parade. Wine Country Trattoria - good selection of Italian everything and good vegetarian food. It's really nice. It is not as much about wine as it is about food. As a non drinker, Jonathan has never felt it to be an issue there.

I've been reading the thread of another couple who are planning a wedding. They're a tad younger than us by about 20+ years, together for 2 years and are planning a Disneyland wedding.

I nearly fell off my chair, over 120 guests and spending over $100K on the wedding. I think they're spending closer to $150K!

We've been together for 21 years and I'm not sure I'd pony up $100K for some over-done chicken and cake (not to mention $150K)

I'm not sure marrying Sukie is worth $100K, perhaps if pressed, I'd cough up about 15 bucks (but that's pushing it).

Haven't these people ever heard of sinking money into real estate, or perhaps nice stock funds?

They've picked out rather expensive rings.

Our rings are made out of titanium and they look like I picked them up at Ace Hardware or Home Depot.

Here I was fretting because of how much I had spent on our wedding outfits (though we're going to look pretty darn fabulous, if not just a teensy weensy odd). I fretted over the handmade cake topper!

However, we are also going to have the primo hoy paloy of California, Arizona and possibly New York society at our celebration (which, I understand from Michelle that it's being held in the parking lot of a Dunkin Donuts).

What could be better than the über-fabulous friends we have?

On a side note, Sukie asked me this evening if I'm looking forward to the wedding. I told him that the thought of being shackled to him for the rest of my life left me speechless.

Great stories, Deb! You've just got to roll with that kind of stuff, huh? Hope you have a pleasant evening!

Thanks Cheri, yes....you can't take anything in life too seriously or you'll forget to laugh at the absurdness of it all.

Marilyn, I forgot to answer you about December...sorry! It sounds like there's the potential for a nice little reunion get-together then. It would be great to see you and anyone else who can make it. When it gets closer, we'll definitely plan something!

I'll miss seeing you two by just a couple of months. Hope you get to meet up and have a wonderful time together.

I'm so stuffed......we had steak marinated in teriakki and ginger (and it marinated an extra day so it was really good), hamburgers, italian sausage, roasted potatoes and onions, sauteed onions and garlic and a green salad. The cake was angel cake with chocolate mousse and cherries. Naturally, we drank CHAMPAGNE!!!!! Off the calorie count today......I'll get right back on it again tomorrow. But boy was everything yummy.....so good, so good. Here's pics of me and the kid. John was busy with the barby so I didn't get his pic.

Ah I see

We have reservations at the Blue Bayou on the night of the 3rd (the day we arrive) and at Napa Rose on the night of the 4th, the day we get married ... at least that's the plan for now until I hear otherwise.

I had wanted to try the Vineyard, but now I guess I won't be able to.

Still there are lots of other places I'd like to try.

HI Ian

I am afraid that my husband and I didn't enjoyed the Blue Bayou. It was lovely decoration and it was very dark for us to communication and cannot see the menu too. The menu was very expensive. Our kids refused to eat the meals and the waiter took one price off and it was expensive:scared1:

After that we went around corner and found fish and chips for kids as they enjoyed it as it much cheaper.

I hope I don't put you off as remember it is very popular and thank for Kelly advised us about it but it was not for us. As everyone have different mind.

Well, I thought this would be a busy day today at work because one secretary took the day off. She works for the busiest attorneys here. Turns out her attorneys are off too! ;) So I'm back to being bored again. Good grief.

Good news though, on the job front. I'm working full time hours, but am not considered full time because I was hired for part time years ago and have just gradually kept increasing my hours as they became available. Now, I'm basically full time, but they haven't been able to approve me as being entitled to the full time benefits because my schedule has been very unpredictable for so long, with not knowing when I'll have to leave and go pick Tyler up from school when he gets in trouble, plus all the doctor appointments he was having. Well......now that it seems things have improved in that regard, our office administrator told me they're ready to give me full time benefits because I'm now able to be here consistently. This would mean I get 2 weeks paid vacation a year, health insurance (but only for me), and paid personal time (5 hours per month), and paid holidays off.

HOWEVER, I still do have to leave early once a week for Tyler's occupational therapy, and I want to continue karate for him because all his doctors say it's so good for his issues, so I have to leave work early another day each week for that (after switching his 2nd class each week to a different day where he can go in the evening). So, it's being discussed whether they can make accomodations for me and let me come in an hour early on the days Tyler's at his dad's (Thurs & Fri). I'm waiting to hear if they're willing to do that.

HollyTyler

Only bad part is the insurance they offer here has a very high deductible ($2,500.00), so everything that I've been paying $5 or $10 for with the county health plan will be full price for me. :headache: However, all I currently have is doctor visits and prescriptions. No emergency, no urgent care, no hospital stay, etc. So I'm really tired of taking that risk and will be happy to feel secure and not have to worry about falling on the ice and breaking my leg or something like that. :thumbsup2

They say they don't make accommodations for anybody because then they'd have to for everybody, BUT they currently do allow alternate schedules for 2 secretaries. One comes in an hour early every day so she can leave an hour early every day and the other works extra hours Mon-Thurs so she can have eveyr Friday off. Seems like they should allow me to leave an hour early those 2 days and then come in an hour early 2 different days. We'll soon see! :goodvibes

AND.....even though I just recently received almost $1/hour raise, the office administrator will work on getting approval for ANOTHER raise for me at the end of the year!!!! And this leaves 3 days a week that I can juggle any appointments Tyler may need. I'll just need to make any appts. on Mon, Tues, or Wed afternoon. That's doable! No need to keep job shopping. I'll stick it out where I am for a while! I think the turning point is that one good secretary is quitting in 2 weeks, and they also know I've been interviewing for other jobs. :thumbsup2

Mature couples know that it is the marriage that they invest into, not the wedding ceremony - which by the way makes them crazy! I think Oprah has done about 10 shows on this subject with Suze Orman telling young ladies how crazy this absurd hoopla is in the long run with their student loans and wedding bills. Statistically they keep proving over and over that so many early divorces are a result in investing into the ceremony and not into the relationship. We didn't get married until we were older and spent the majority of our money on our trip to WDW, but still had a beautiful small wedding in Laguna Beach. We made it all about having a dinner party with friends and then got married where they hold the art festival.

Noooooooo don't say that the Haunted Mansion is closed when we're there!!!!

(By the way, I'll have to take you to Oak Park, and Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio)

We have watched every documentary about the FLW homes and would love, love, love that.

Oh Deborah, I'm a dunce! It never occurred to me that you would have difficulty communicating in a dark place. I'm so sorry, that was ignorant on my part. :sad2: :headache: I should practice what I preach... Stand in someone elses shoes and see it through their eyes.

I read somewhere recently that the average AVERAGE!! cost of weddings these days is around $40K! Amazing!

We ( in the olden days ) 1973 got married at my home church (no cost), paid the preacher, got flowers that were in season, I bought my dress off the rack with no alterations. Rental TUXES. My cousin made the bridesmaid dresses.

It was beautiful! All of my relatives and Chuck's relatives and our friends came.

We had our reception at the local ELK's Club, where my mom and dad were members......we had a buffet and free bar for 4 hours......and a band which was almost free because they were also Elk's club members.

Chuck and I went camping in Rocky Mountain National Park for our honeymoon!

What fun we had when we were youngsters.........:hippie: :hippie: :cool1: :cool1:

:lmao:

Oh, yes, I totally agree.....you know we did the Carnival Freedom in the Med last year after the Disney Magic TA. We were with other Disney cast members, too. We really noticed the service difference. BUT, I must say, we LOVED the ship....brand new and so beautiful! The accessible stateroom was NOT at the very back of the ship, like Disney. They are in the middle, so you don't have to dodge vaccuum cleaners and housekeeping carts and luggage all the way to th eback of the ship. :wizard:

Don't worry about it. My scenario was more fun though because I figured you got so drunk you forgot :lmao: We should plan for another time. I was completely innocent since I can't find my camera!

YES I WILL......and I'll be thinking of all of you while doing my cheers! John had done all the prep work in the kitchen, we were about to put the meat on the barby and pop the cork......my mouth was watering.......then we had to pull the plug. Oh well. At least we get to start the week off right with a good Monday night party!

Congrats Holly - it just shows that you've done a great job for them and they want to keep you around!:cool1: :cool1:

Weddings can be ridiculously expensive. Your wedding sounds practical and perfect!
Ken and I  got married for way less than the average cost! We did much of it ourselves:thumbsup2 . I did the bouquets out of silk flowers, sewed the flower girl and matron of honour dress, and made our cake. Ken's grandfather performed the ceremony. It was very sweet. In his 60's he went back to school for religous studies, and got his official status in time for our wedding. It was the first one he performed, and he was more nervous than us. I did splurge on my dress and had a beautiful train and beading and flowers; but my splurge was still on clearance sale at $800 which is probably still cheaper than the average cost of many dresses. We drove to DL and Las Vegas for the honeymoon, and had a fantastic time!

I told him that the thought of being shackled to him for the rest of my life left me speechless.

.

Well I'm not sure I would spend the money after 12 years of marriage but it sure seemed ok at the time. Of course we didn't spend that much but it was a lot to us at the time! We wanted a huge 10 year "reception" but never did that after we started looking into the costs :scared1: We would rather go with you guys on a Disney Cruise!

Well, at least we fit with the norm. Not that I'm not looking forward to celebrating, but something cozy with friends seems so much nicer.

We have watched every documentary about the FLW homes and would love, love, love that.

There are fascinating architectural walking tours (and a ton of them).

Chicago is to architecture what Paris is to food. Chicagoans are obsessed with it (and OK, obsessed with really good pizza too.)

Ah I see

Scottishwee35

I agree about the prices and we wouldn't mind if the food was better. That being said, I think it is something everyone should experience just to say you did it. Plus, unless you are going to DTD, the food isn't great in DL.

I actually loved the Carnival one I went on as much as Disney. It was the Carnival Liberty. I found all staff and food quality and cleanliness, and everything else to be the exact same standards. But it was 8 days and people say the ones that are 7 days or longer are better because the "party ships" are typically the shorter cruises. Or so I've heard. And the best part........adults could use the slide in the pool! ;)

That sounds great to me. The problem is that, if we were getting married now, I feel like Jon (not me) would want to compete with his friend's weddings. We have been to 50 weddings in the last few years and Jon has been in most of them. Most of them were really extravagant. The last one that he was in last April was a huge wedding and they hired entertainment  The stupid part was that we all just wanted to dance. A HUGE portion of the guests left before the DJ even started because there were so many other things going on. It was a mess to us. Then the went for a month to Italy. The husband does Jon's exact job so we know this was all charged! I'm glad we got married when we did. Our friends were just impressed that we had a house that they could hang out in, we didn't need an extravagant wedding to impress them!

Only time will tell, but it sure sounds like Tyler is on the road to success. We all encounter speed bumps, but when we're on the right road we still go in the right direction. :yay:

After his karate class yesterday, 2 instructors told me they've seen a remarkable improvement in Tyler recently. ;) (Since meds). One called me at work today and wants to talk with me tomorrow about starting him in the Leadership classes. I have no idea what that means, I just know it's a step above the Tiny Tigers class he's in now, but I'll find out tomorrow during his class what that means. :thumbsup2 I'm sure it means more money! But if it's helping Tyler, and improving his confidence, I'm OK with that if it's not too costly, especially since his dad pays 1/2. I'm pretty sure it's only $25/month more.

I forgot to tell them that he used a self defense move, automatically, just based on instinct, last week when a kid at school hit him. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2

It's great to have other people notice a difference too....proves the meds ARE working.

Still raining.....heard that Fay slowed down....not sure how much longer it will last. It's making feel like I'm in the UK with Deborah & Marilyn :goodvibes

Got to talk to my baby girl today...no Ian though...he's in New Hampshire with his dad. Sydney's so cute! Singing Rain, rain go away. My sister's very excited cuz Sydney's already showing interest in potty training at 18 months. (that's not exactly very high on MY list of things to get excited about but I'm sure all you moms understand :lmao: )

Check it out----it's the Magic in Cabo.

Hello guys. Try and have fun but not too much, since I won't be there ;)
You said you would sail anywhere on a Disney ship so I guess Bubba agreed to go on the Med :rolleyes1 I miss you and I'll be thinking of you. You have to be having more fun than me. I guess I did go to the beach yesterday, with Jon's mom :scared:
Gaygay, you survived a day at the beach with DMIL:scared1: I'm so proud of you. and we do miss you both. you missed drunk Venetia last night. She kept looking for Cindy, but could not find her.:sad1: :sad1:

We were in Cabo to today. The Carnival pride that we are on had a medical emergency and had to stop for the sick or injured person to get off. We got to see our beautiful Magic today. We have now left cabo and are on our way to PV where we will dock next to her tomorrow.

I know that each ship is different, even within a cruise line, but this is the worst I have ever seen in the way of service, attitude and cleanliness. On our way back to the cabin just now, we came down some stairs from the upper deck and on the railing was an ice cream cone that had been there so long, the cone had melted along with the ice cream. Then at the bottom of the stairs is a food station where someone had dropped what must have been a plate of chicken tenders and fries by a sliding door and no one had bothered to clean it up. I know we will not sail Carnival again EVER. and this is a 7 day cruise. Not to say everyone is not nice, we have meet a few crew members that are friendly and happy, but not may. Last night at dinner my DMIL brought a bottle of wine for dinner. I was going to have mine with my lobster dinner. The waiter from the table behind us reached in between Bubba and I and grabbed my empty wine glass. And then when he was called on about why he would take mine and that what he did was rude, he just laughed and said "oh well, some one took mine." This of course upset my DFIL very much and I'll just say that he let his disappointment be know.

But I am having a good time being with the family and not letting any of this ruin our trip. Just know that we won't be traveling carnival again. I would like to try princess as I have heard good things about them. But when you have already traveled with the best in everything, food, service, shows etc, it is hard to appreciate something at a lower standard. You see things on this ship you would never see on Disney. And one last thing before I stop rambling,

people say one reason they dont like to cruise Disney is too may kids, :lmao: I have seen more kids running around uncontrolled here the I have have on the two Disney cruises we have taken.

Sorry again for the ramble, thanks for listening

So is our wedding going to be a letdown for you?;)

I was. I flew from age 15-27. I always flew as a hobby and it was an expensive one, so not much. I'd love to fly again someday, but I've had high BP and been on meds for it for about 10 years now, so I doubt it will happen again for me. Maybe Wilson will fly, that would be fun :thumbsup2

Thanks for the report.

At least you get to see family.

We have never been on any other cruise line. It was hard to get Sukie to even a cruise, it would be just as difficult to get him to try something other than DCL now.

You know, something you said resonated ... people have asked us whether or not the kids are a problem on the DCL cruises we've been on ... our answer is always the same, we hardly notice the kids. Seriously, we're aware that they're there but it has never seemed like they were out of control or a bother.

Sounds like we would love it, we are real estate junkies.

There is, just once a year, a house tour in Oak Park through the homes.

The tickets are as scarce as hen's teeth and the competition for them is fierce.

Sukie and I once got on the tour and saw the inside of some of the Wright homes, which are incredible.

The rest of the year, there are walking tours where you just see the outsides.

And while I'm on an architectural kick, and promoting my city for the Olympics, I bring you the Marquette Building, and a great surprise, built in 1895:

I was going to go get on that ship in PV but since it's so horrible, I will stay home! How is the kid's club? Are the kids going in it and have you poked your head in there? It seems like the kid's clubs would be similar with every ship within a cruise line :confused3

Great stories, Deb! You've just got to roll with that kind of stuff, huh? Hope you have a pleasant evening!

Marilyn, I forgot to answer you about December...sorry! It sounds like there's the potential for a nice little reunion get-together then. It would be great to see you and anyone else who can make it. When it gets closer, we'll definitely plan something!

There's a thread on the main cruise board http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1923501
that has some great pictures of the Magic leaving LA and in one of the pics you can see someone holding up...Bobby Banana! Is that OUR Bobby Banana?

I don't know if anyone answered this, but yes, it is supposed to be OUR Bobby Banana with Lisa. Angie was supposed to send him there. We had some speculation that he would be adding to the trip report we have for him. I have not checked it though.

On this site Cheri gave us (above) I found this post. What a great photo!! I added it to my collection because that is what we looked like when we got to LA!

We just got back from the 8/10 sailing and I took this picture from our flight out of LAX at about 4:15 yesterday so it must have been right before sailaway. We had a great view of the port.:goodvibes http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/jackiec2/P1010519.jpg

And here is BOBBY --dressed in shorts and a shirt--Tyler would be happy!!

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/debrouth/San%20Pedro/BeachSanPedro8-2008101.jpg

I added both photos to page 7 of Bobby's thread post 103
