Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

3 miles outside for me today...no intervals. I walked 5 min to warmup, then ran for 25 min, then walked it on in. First time outside in about a month...now I remember why I've come to appreciate the TM. I am enjoying the biking...not sure I should've registered for the duathlon, though. I really would have preferred to have a better running base built up so I could focus on the biking so we'll see how it goes.

Tracey...no worries, looks like Fay's heading this way but still early to tell. It will only be a tropical storm or Cat 1 hurricane at worst. That's doable... 2s and up are a different story ;) School starts Mon which is freaking a lot of folks out. We'll be certainly be watching.

bubba...congrats on your 5K!!!!

Terri...have buckets of fun on vaca! Impressive improvement on your pace!

Morning all! Well, I actually have a LR to report today!:cool1: According to my Garmin, the last time I ran outside was March 15th! Wasn't expecting much from my run, but was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. 6.0 miles in 55:ish (9:11 pace) My 3rd mile was actually at 8:50! I tell ya though, had it not been for the Olympics last night I don't know if I would've had the inspiration to get out and lace up. From Paula Radcliffe finishing the women's marathon after having to stop twice and walk and in obvious pain, Dara Torres awesome performance, and Michael Phelps aka Superman doing it again---then I read a quote from Michael Phelps this morning "Nothing is impossible. All you need is a little imagination" So, I headed out the door.

Stephanie: Nice job on the 6 miler and outside. Its nice to be outside even if it hot!! (I just hate getting on a TM)

Got in my taper 6 miles in. Feeling good. Now its a wait and see game with FAY - the tropical storm that is heading this way. May turn into a Cat. 1 as it comes up to mid-Florida. All those in the West Coast of FL, be careful. We are now in a Tropical Storm Watch. Ugh, its the waiting that sucks. But at least we have a warning and time to do something about it.

Have a great Sunday everyone and more Olympics on the way (and NASCAR!)
(weight loss now at 9lbs.)

We're all ready if Fay decides to head up towards the Tampa area! The cone of uncertainty is still quite large. I saw some computer models that have it heading out into the Gulf and eventually hitting Texas! weatherunderground.com has some really cool maps.

Have a good day everyone!

I'm Back again...

Forgot to mention I tried my RaceReady LD compression shorts this morning. They have pockets on the butt side. I am trying to eliminate carrying a fanny pack during events. I had my small digital camera, cell phone, lip balm and sunscreen stick with room for a bit more and it worked pretty well. It also has a hidden inside pocket on the front side. Think this will work great. Still have my spibelt that is small and lightweight Thinking I will use these for the DL 1/2. Here is a photo I took on my walk of the wild life at an entrance to a development that has a big waterfall area.

Hi All,

I got in a 5 miler this morning. I had an injured hamstring last month, so I'm easing my way back into running. I'm still very slow :snail: (I finished my 5 miler in the same time Stephanie finished her 6 miler), but at least I'm getting the miles in, right?

I hope that Fay stays away, or at least that it doesn't amount to much. Stay safe!

Have a great week everyone! :goodvibes

Quick run by.

Did my 16.25 miles today with a few guys from my running group. We got rained on between mile 2 and 4, so where I forgot to Bodyglide, got a little chaffed. Our average pace was 10:14 per mile.

Rest for a couple of hours before we head out for the first Girl Scout meeting of the new school year.

Have a good one everybody. Hope FAY stays AWAY!

Hello everyone!

Jeff - Awesome photos! A rainbow in paradise while on the beach! How much better can it get??? Oh wait...I know...you didn't have ice cream in hand! :lmao:
Tracy - I finally got in my 10 miler today so now I can taper too! Happy tapering and I hope FAY misses you! BTW - 2 MORE WEEKS TO DL!
Stephanie - WTG on the long run. I can't believe how fast you are! Love the Phelps quote...I'll have to remember that one.

AFM - I completed 10.5 miles this morning...my longest run to date! I was so excited when I got home. Not only had I done it, I did it in great time (for me) and I had no problems with the knee! :woohoo:

Michelle: I'm so excited that we can taper together, I did my LW last Sunday and my schedule has me taper for about 2 weeks. Yes, getting very excited and have started to put things together for packing.
Loving the "No ICE CREAM" for Jeff, maybe it would melt too much on the beach. With Jeff doing his 30 miles today -:lmao: I think he will be skipping along during the DL 1/2. I definately agree that he will have lots of time to get the rest of us WISHers some after race snacks, drinks and iced towelletes. :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

Hello Everyone!

Didn't do anything today, but did 4 miles yesterday. I was visiting friends in Nashville and forgot the Garmin so I don't have a clue what the time was, but 4 miles was the Galloway Group goal so I did it on my own. Jogged all of miles 1 and 4 and took a couple of walk breaks on 2 and 3. Still more jogging then with Galloway.

Jeff the photos are great!

Everyone if Florida stay safe. We in GA are hoping that Fay dumps rain up here. We need it!

Checking in here!

Jeff those pictures are awesome! I am really inspired by all the great things you do with your girls. You guys always seem to be out having a great time!

I went out and did 8 miles today. It was a bit of a struggle - I had side stitches for a while (which almost never happens to me), but I pushed my way through them. Actually I felt pretty good about it since I was out late last night celebrating my sister's wedding yesterday and definitely ate and drank way more than my body is used to! At least I got to sleep late this morning.

The wedding was very nice. It was a small event (just immediate family), and she pulled it together pretty quickly since my brother in the Navy was able to get last-minute leave and come this weekend. She and her husband have 2 adorable kids already (a 2 year old boy and 6 month old girl), so this was just making it official! They make a great family, and I was so happy that they could celebrate their relationship this way.

Running-wise next week should be a big one for me. I have a 10-miler on the schedule for Saturday, and then I'll be running a 5K race Sunday morning! So I'll almost be simulating my half-marathon. I'm looking forward to it (I think).

Oh come on now, I haven't done 30 miles (well technically 39.9) miles since January 12th & 13th, and even that wasn't very hard. :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2::laughing:

I'll be scream teaming at the end of the half, with a Jamba Juice in hand, or something stronger if I can find something open that early :rolleyes1. Robert & Wendy, any "Red Cup" stops at the end of the course?

Maybe if you detour in the last mile of the race, to our hotel, I can arrange those ice towels and beverages for you. Hmmmm?

Or leave a cooler at the last intersection before re-entering the parking lot? Anyone having non-runners cheering out on the course?

AFM: Woke up this morning here is Southeast Florida to a thunderstorm at 5:45am. Just the start of what we're going to get with Fay. Thought I might get a window to do a few miles, but from the radar - it doesn't look like it. Had a small break to put up some more shutters because of the potential for tornadoes within the storm now its pouring again with lightening. We are under a Flood Watch also. All Floridians STAY SAFE!!!!!

Good morning!

Hope everyone in Florida stays safe!

Tracy - Duckie caught a nasty cold/flu right after getting back from camp. Better now but sure having to gear up for the start of school.

Was a beautiful weekend here! Got out Sat for a 16 mile bike followed by a 2 mile walk. Was going to swim but was starving so headed for home. Spent Sun doing yard and house work. Not exciting but they won't do themselves (yard gnomes and house fairies have been on strike for some time).

Have a great day and will catch up later.

Hey team!!!!!

Well I hope I am still on the team:hug: , I haven't really felt worthy of posting here lately. My training has been non-existant, I have gainned weight just felt ick...about myself as a athlete. However, today I have decided i am back and better then ever. I have a 1/2 marathon at the end of Sept that i have really not trainned for but will follow through with it as it will be DS's first 1/2 and I want to experience it with him.

I had signed up for the disney full and it will be my first full marathon and I want to enjoy the experience not be terrified of it. So I am posting my goals right here for all to see because if it is in type then it is real right:hug:

Tonight, not Monday, as I normally say I will start training, dieting etc. I will get out for a nice, long slow walk, and eatting habits will change as well. I have a goal of 50 pds before marathon weekend, not that might be a bit off but that is what I am aiming for.

Sorry for the vent but thank you for listening:grouphug:

Now to catch up!!!

All my Floridian teamates please be safe!!!!!

Jeff: The rainbows and your princesses are beautiful. You always post the most beautiful photos. Note to self, go visit Hawaii

Stephanie: I watched that as well, maybe that is my "kick in the butt" moment to get me back on track. She did it and in so much pain but nothing was going to stop her

Tracy: WTG on the 6M, be safe!!!! WOW on the photo

Julie: WTG on the 5M, be careful with that hamstring, they can be painful

Kira: Ouch on the side stitches, they sure hurt:flower3:

Liz: Wow great workouts this weekend

Have a great day all

OK you have now spilled your guts :scared1: out here for all to see!!!! Now its time to step up to the plate and get going. You will get no easy ride from me. What have you done today so far??? Huh??? I do have to say that I have been doing some good training, but realized my diet was not all that great so three week ago I went back on my old trusty WW plan and have lost 9 lbs. Come on girl you can do it. Really, you need to start with a Half coming in September. We don't want to hear about a WISHer laying on the side of the road totally worn out!!!
I think your goal of a Full Marathon is great, but as we all know it is going to take some kind of training. Set up your goals and organinze them. Write them down if you need to or keep a training journal with the miles that you need to complete for each day (this is what I do and then I check them off as I do them.) You'll get there, you just need a bit of motivation to get out there and get it going. Did I motivate you or do I need to get out my Wet Noodle? Don't make me do it!!! :rotfl:

Good Luck and keep us informed!!!!

Kim - Our full plan starts next week and I don't think you can get much eaier than MfM. Are you ready for a 5-miler on the 30th? Let's get in gear! ;)

Becky - lol! Ummmm.....I've been doing tri's since my one adn only in July. :rotfl: Trying ot get in one more this year.

Julie - DOn't compare yourself to anyone around here. Stephanie flies compared to me too. Just do your pace adn be happy when you see improvement. There are poeple here faster than you adn people here slower, but what matters is how you feel about your pace. :goodvibes

I did 6 on Saturday. it was hot adn nasty. I am so out of it for heat this year. Ugh. Must get hydrating.

Hi, everyone! WTO and LTO and I've been out of the loop barely posting on the DIS except in our vow renewal planning journal. Sorry about that!
I've just read the entire thread from last week and don't remember everything I wanted to write, but really wanted to WISH everyone a great day. To our DL participants -- I am so jealous and will be thinking of you next week. I hope everyone is enjoying the taper and that you all have a fabulous, safe and fulfilling race! :grouphug: :goodvibes pixiedust:

Krista and Stephen -- Carter is absolutely gorgeous! Krista, I'm sure your WISH hat was better than caffeine for the little guy! ;) Stephen, so glad your sprain is healed. I think you should tell everyone that Hines tripped you. It sounds better! :)

Leanna -- Congrats on your Tri!

Susie -- Congrats on ONEderland! That is such a huge breakthrough and you should be so proud of yourself! You have always been a tremendous inspiration to me with your discipline and dedication. Here you are, proving once again that you are completely unstoppable and the consummate WISH warrior!

Jackie -- How are you feeling, sweetie? I am so sorry you are having so much pain. I hope the massages help! :goodvibes

Debra -- Sorry about the migraines. I share your pain, literally.

AFM -- Am now up to 150 crunches and 125 pushups every day; working out with the personal trainer Monday & Wednesday; short runs on Tuesday & Thursday and longer runs on Saturday. Did the 5k last Wednesday where Howard had his awesome PR, though I fared much worse. For some reason I'd had a surprising and scary nosebleed that morning and was definitely not feeling my best for an evening race. Finishing felt momentous.

The plan for this Saturday was 2 miles to Panera with Patty, breakfast (fuel) and 2 miles back to my house. Instead, somewhere around 1.3 I took a fall (marathon 2007 revisited but no Pat, Lily & Rhonda to drag me to my feet and no Pat to wash my hands with gatorade :lmao: ). Limped to Panera (which turned out to be 2.67 miles instead of 2), cleaned up, had breakfast and took a different route (again, walking) home (2.75). We burned a lot of calories but no land-speed records. The scrapes and bruises are minimal, my right knee is pretty banged up, but worst of all I clunked my forehead on the pavement, scraping it and ending up with a bit of a headache even 2 days later. This is all depth-perception related and reminds me of why I don't run new routes. UGH! Howard was away, being a counselor at a Special Olympics camp, so I couldn't even whine to him, get him to wait on me, have him do the errands and cooking, etc., so it was all for naught! ;) Planning to run again tomorrow -- at the fountain walk. Familiar territory. Should be safe.

Hello guys!

Trying to jump back in here! I've doing more biking than anything. Now that I have the new bike, I more exited to go it than to run... We did about 8 miles Friday and then another 8 on Sunday. I swam on Saturday...about 1/3 miles in 30 min then an additional 15 min cool down for a total of a 1/2 mile. I'm hoping to bike tonight (8sih miles) and then tomorrow I will try to run/walk w/ a 3/2 interval. This will be new for me, so I'll see how it goes.

Train smart everyone!

Cam..Sorry to hear about your fall! Glad you're ok!!!

Hi all!!

Just a super-quick wave hello just to tell you I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.. just an LTO few days....

Training is going pretty well and I promise to update soon.... Looks like SE Florida is going to see a ton of rain and wind from Fay, so I just finished getting everything at work squared away and now I'm just home to do the same... I'm actually happy that my first Florida strom experience will be a "little guy"... Oddly enough we are insanely busy at the resort... they evacuated the tourists out of the Keys and apparently they all decided to come here!!

To all the other Floridians... Stay Dry!!

Hey everyone. Hope you guys had a nice weekend. Sounds like everyone was busy running. :thumbsup2

I ran almost four miles today doing a R3/W1, average pace was around 13:00. I'm slowly getting there again! My neighbor who has started running with me a couple days a week had to stop about 3/4 into our workout. I kept going and I felt bad about it, but we managed to get her back over to her house. I just am determined to stay on my program so I continued on without her. I have to if I wanna start my half training later. I think of her as being quite fit since she is a kickboxer, so this kinda made me feel a tad better about where I'm at now. I hope she continues to run with me, time goes by faster and I seem to push myself a tad harder.

Have a great week WISHers! :yay:

Oh, and Jeff you're killing me with those beautiful photos where you live. I'm quite jealous!

Tracy & others in the Florida area. Stay safe, and don't forget to bring your running shoes indoors. The last thing you need is your shoes disappearing in the winds. Otherwise you'll be running the half marathon barefoot, or worse, in brand spankin' new shoes.

Shoes outside, who does that?? I wouldn't dare. I would find friends in them the next day like, frogs, lizards, roaches, spiders, etc. If not in the house then in the garage. Yikes, it just makes me cringe to think about it.

Being safe here. Just hanging out getting my ipod ready for the CA trip and putting together clothes to pack. Going through my checklists to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.

Bored in the storm, Tracy:surfweb:

Tracy,

He He He, locals here in Hawaii do that.

We leave our shoes, slippahs, etc. outside the front door. You never walk inside a home with shoes on. It keeps the floors clean, and the carpet from getting soiled. The old worn out slippahs (Hawaiian meaning: slippers or flip flops) you don't go out in public wearing, those go outside the back door.

The only times I wear shoes are for running, hiking, biking, work, weddings and funerals. The rest of the time I'm either wearing slippahs, or go barefoot.

We have roaches, gecko's, and lizzards, but never found any of them inside of my shoes.

I wear sneakers for walking or at Disney. I wear crocs or berkinstocks most of the other times, not much flip-flops (or slippahs :rotfl: ) not real good for me I need more arch support. Other than that it's barefoot. We have alot of tile and some wood floors so never really worry about bringing shoes inside, plus thats just the way I am used to doing it. They go in the closet.

Can you tell I'm just sitting here, bored, with shutters up and waiting for Olympic coverage to start again on NBC?

We had one rain band come through around dinner, it is clear now, but I just did my run for today outside and saw some clouds moving back in. Nothing too exciting yet. has anyone seen some of the forecast models that have it going into the atlantic and then back across westward??:confused3 :confused3

Anyhow, Fay is tracking due north now, so those of us on the west coast should be on the "good" side of the storm.

Hi guys, it appears that this is the thread where everyone is at today.

I'm also vegging now and watching the games. I did 10 miles and then 2 hours pushing the mower so I can be lazy now.

When I have a day like today with 4.5 hours of exercise I eat the rest of the day. That and drink a ton of water. Since that dehydration adventure I've keep a water bottle close.

We don't wear shoes in the house either, certainly not a red neck thang since people in this part of the country put on shoes as soon as they get out of bed. But we are transplants here and the Japanese custom of no shoes in the house is one we adhere to.

Hope the storms are just rain Fla buddies.

OK, I see what happens. I'm not here for a few days and BANG! Life goes on without me. I could end up keeling over in my three bean salad, with no one noticing me missing until the neighbors notice an odor or the mail filling up and overflowing from the mailbox. Thanks a lot, that brings me down a few rungs on the ladder. :rolleyes1

Friday was my rest day. Saturday and Sunday I spent volunteering at a summer camp for Special Olympics Delaware. I was a Camp Counselor (my second summer!) for 8 campers who mainly ranged in age from about 15 to 18. I had two genuinely nice Junior Counselors helping me out too. We had a great weekend. The campers left today after lunch. Unfortunately I had to leave last night after their dance at lights out. I didn't make it home and into bed until 1 AM. Ugh.

Today I was supposed to do XT. Since I missed mid-distance and long runs this weekend, I decided to run today. I managed 5 in the time I had allotted for it..... here are the results.

Just popping in to report DH and I just got back from a 13 mile bike ride! :faint: That is the longest distance yet traveled on our bikes. It would have been a bit shorter, but we were chased by dogs and decided to take a different route home that was a little out of the way. That meant also coming home in the dark. Didn't care for that too much, but we did have those bright flashing LED lights and people just about stopped until they could figure out what was heading their way! :thumbsup2 I actually felt safer than during the daytime. Though I do not plan to make riding at a habit!

Have a great night all and you guys down in FL stay safe!!!

Glad that Fay doesn't seem to be as bad at this point on you guys. Stay safe!

I had an off day and then a sick day from running over the weekend. I was feeling better today so I managed to get in 3.25 miles in 27 minutes (8:30 ish) pace.

Just a Fay Update...

I am in Palm Harbor on the west coast and we're dry here! We'll be getting some of the bands this afternoon, but it won't be any worse than our usual thunderstorms! Luckily, fay never strengthened to a hurricane. Unfortunately it has really slowed down, so it may be quite rainy in some places for awhile.

Checking in here from Southeast Florida. Woke up to lots of rain and wind. Not too bad. That is pretty much all we have had. There was a break last night for about 2 hours and then around 11pm the winds and rain kicked back up. We are under a Tornado Warning and Flood Watch. Here is a photo I snapped this morning when I went to let my dog out to show the weather. She was very good and just quickly went straight to the grass to tinkle and right back inside!!

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j286/dsnyfan/Nature/TSFay.jpg
Wind blowing out palm trees around.
Supposed to pass over Florida from where it came on shore just South of Naples go diagonally Northeast and out the the Atlantic and then curve back in the hit somewhere in Southeast Georgia. That might be good for them, they are having draught conditions there.

Waiting for a break at some point to get out and do my 4 miles that are on schedule for today. Might be later in the day or early evening.

****Disneyworld is to open today at 8am for the 4 main parks to allow guests to enjoy the parks before weather gets any worse.******

GOOD MORNING

My response would be the same as the last two. In fact we haven't even had rain since yesterday around 5, it is getting a little windy but as aykab said, not expecting anything worse than the usual thunderstorms.

Howard If I had been around I would have noticed your super speedy numbers were not being put up but I have not been around in a week either:rolleyes1 Once again awesome job on the run

Speaking of super speedy, ran with DH last night ended up with a 9.5 pace for 4. Would be excited except knee and hamstring hurting a little today. Good news is rest of my body wanted to go faster and longer. Bad news is leg is not cooperating with rest of body ;) It's ok at least I can run at all

Stacy Awesome job on the bike ride!!!

Going to gym tonight for step and pump. Will check in later

Fay Update here...

Right now just loads and loads of rain. It's pretty much light rain nonstop with occasional rain squalls. Last night things really picked up about 1:00am... and was woken up three times with the rain pounding on the house... but no wind damage and haven't lost power at all.

We've had about 5 inches of rain with the storm so far and looks like maybe another three inches or so...

Speaking of which.... did you all see the video of the NITWIT kiteboarder get carried off of Fort Lauderdale beach yesterday?!?!? I know it's a "small" storm, but SHEESH dude!!

ETA: Here's the link... http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/weather/2008/08/19/florida.kite.boarder.wfor

Carrie: Looks like a nice bike, good luck.

All you Florida people stay safe. I lived down there in 2004 for that lovely hurricane season so I do remember what it is like checking the storm path every 5 minutes. The question is though: if you go do an LR with the wind at your back can you count it as a new PR or is that cheating?

I had a nice weekend of camping but between the tent and then a triple header of softball on Sunday my legs are a bit sore. It was like 3 hours of speed work. I took yesterday off to do some yard work and let the legs feel better. Tonight it is the gym then the street.

Stephanie - Where are you staying? We're flying down to WDW next Tuesday (just me and the kids for this trip), and I can hardly wait! It's great to be getting one more trip in before school starts.

I fit in 45 minutes/3.8 miles today. It was hot, but not too humid and I felt pretty good. Lately I have been struggling more on my shorter runs than my LRs - what's up with that? Anyway, it was nice to do a shorter one that didn't make me feel like giving up halfway through!

Carrie--Nice bike! I'm thinking that might be what I want for xmas this year.

Okay, now I've got to back into town and buy soccer supplies for DD. Nothing like getting a last minute email from the coach telling us what she needs. Now I feel like summer is officially over with fall soccer starting this week. Geez, where did the time go?

Just a quick update while we have power. We are getting lots and lots of rain. Streets have flooded and there are 51 homes damaged and 9 destroyed a few miles from us. It still isn't over yet. I think the eye is 41 miles from us and is expected to hit us in the next 6-7 hours. We are still getting lots of rain and more is projected all night and most of tomorrow.

Weird thing is they are saying that Fay is strengthening over land and will soom emerge off the east coast most likely as a Cat 1 Hurricane and then go north and then back north west back onto land. We had two real bad tornadoes down here. One in Hallendale and on in Palm Beach.

HI Team. I am at WDW right now, leaving Saturday. It wasn't too bad today. We were at AK and walked onto every ride. It was just drizzly rain. We left after the parade at 2:30. The down pours didn't start until around 5pm-6pm. They expect the parks to be open tomorrow as the forcast isn't as bad as previously thought. This is good as we have AM ressies at Ohana's for breakfast.

I slipped down the steps here as they were freshly painted and really slick. Now I am pretty bruised up.

Cam - See above... we can share the pity party for our falls. I hope you are OK!!

Hi, guys! Sorry I continue to be missing. :flower3: It's nothing serious, just LTO/WTO as the start of the fall semester approaches in less than a week. Anyway, I'm in the time crunch for lots of prep, etc., in addition to my other work, and that leaves me with little time for fun. I've been keeping up with the WOs, :ssst: on the eating, but no online fun until next Wednesday (not even reading). And fingers crossed for the schedule clearing up earlier.

I miss you all and hope to be back soon and posting regularly. That's Wednesday, August 27 at the latest--not that I've marked it on my calendar or anything. That's the plan, anyway, to push through on the work crunch so that I can get back to my slacker work self and back to WISHing ASAP! :rotfl:

I would agree to put a layer of duct tape along the inside of the shoe to smooth over the material. You will definately get a blister from a hole that has been rubbed into the material of you shoe. I would bring the shoe with you to a running store and have them look at it. Maybe your heel sits too far back or doesn't have the right support to keep it in place and it is moving around alot to rub a hole in the material???:confused3 Not sure, but sound like you should be in need of new shoes VERY soon.
Good luck.

As for me, I did 3.25 in just under 27 minutes. I have my last race of the season on Saturday morning and then I'll start focusing on distance training as my next race after that isn't until October but it's a 10k.

If the skin has torn off, put some New Skin liquid on it. It burns like hell the first minute or so, but that's the antibiotic alcohol doing it's job. Then it seals the skin.

On top of that, put either mole skin or mole foam over the blister.

Before racing, slather your feet in Vaseline, then put your socks on.

Shoes could be an issue if they're really worn out. I hate to give you advised to buy a new pair if you're racing anytime soon.

I just ran a 5K race tonight. It was a interesting experience to say the least. This was my 11th race but I think I learned more tonight than I had in any race, except maybe my first.

First, I've never raced any other time other than a weekend morning. It was strange to compete at 7pm on a Wednesday. That part made me a little nervous but I figured it wouldn't be much different than my normal run after work. Boy, was I wrong!

Let's see...the first lesson I learned was to not indulge in the company barbeque a few hours before leaving for a race. A huge tri-tip sandwich, big bowl of chili, and lump of bland potato salad (how did I miss the garlic bread?) probably isn't an ideal pre-race meal. I don't need any extra weight out there but I felt like I was carrying a bowling ball through the course. Is that really what it feels like to jog while pregnant?!? How do you do it? :worship:

This was also my first time running in the rain. I thought about staying home and catching up on the Olympics but am glad I made the choice to get out there.

My biggest lesson learned and one I really should have known better was to leave my ego at home. I usually finish near the back of the pack and never have a problem with it but there was something about this race that really made me want to run faster than I'm capable. It was a fund-raiser for the university's cross-country team. There were only about 26 runners, around 18 of which were on the cross-country team. The remainder (including me) were members of our local running club. I'm the newest member and by far the least experienced. I'm sure you can't tell!

We circled the track once and then ran a course through the forest three times before circling the track in reverse to the finish. When we started, everyone flew around the track. I was last but at least wanted to be able to see everyone in front of me! I usually run around 10:30 to 11:00 but was starting at a 8:30 pace. I knew right away it was a huge mistake but my ego wouldn't let me slow down until we got away from the track and everyone cheering us on. I'm too old to care about stuff like that! :sad2:

The course itself was beautiful but very hilly, mostly unpaved, and by now, pretty muddy. It was a real challenge for me as I have no trail or grass experience.

I eventually slowed down to a comfortable pace but by now I was pretty worn out. My heartrate was up, my breathing difficult and my calves were killing me. I found someone going at my pace and we had a good conversation through the remainder of the race which helped take my mind off of it as I recovered.

She was so nervous about coming in last. I told her about our DLF > DNF >> DNS motto and she thought it was brilliant and really helped her get through the race. Kudos to whoever came up with it!

I don't know the official time as it's not posted yet and I forgot to stop my watch for at least 30 seconds. I'm estimating I ran about a 10:24 pace, about 0:33 slower than my PR.

This was my first DLF but I don't mind at all as I feel like I learned a lot and overcame so much to finish strong tonight.

Question: what is tapering?

FireDancer
08-21-2008, 01:15 AM
Question: what is tapering?

Decreasing your miles in preparation for a race. Lets say you are running 60 miles a week now but have a marathon in 3 weeks. You may decrease your mileage to 50 this week, 30 next week, and 10 the week before the marathon so your legs are fresh for race day.

Steve: Sorry to hear about the evening run experience but sometimes learning the hard way is the best way to remember the lesson. I love after work runs. I did one in June and have one next month. It definitely has a different feeling.

Dena- I have been pretty lucky blister wise but I used to get them before I started wearing running socks. If you are wearing cotton socks put them down and slowly back away. I find that wearing thin socks like wigwam are best. Nice make socks that are supposed to help with blisters. While I am sure much of that is marketing I have a couple of pairs and love them.

Question: what is tapering?

I hope this helps.... A good runner needs to know when to quit. Just like other aspects of training, it requires as much discipline not to run as it does to run. If you do too much before a race, you won't run your best. Training hard for an event can leave you drained both physically and mentally. The only way to get the maximum benefit from your training is to taper. Every runner who has trained for competition has wondered when to cut back, and how much total rest to allow before competition. Most runners use a combination of guesswork, intuition, and experience to decide.

The trick with tapering your workouts is how to balance the need for rest and recovery with the inevitable detraining effect. There is certainly no single answer. Variables include training intensity, volume, frequency, base level of fitness, and the given event. Different taper plans are needed for a 5K or a marathon.

In a review of the current literature, researchers from Spain concluded that slow, progressive reductions are more effective than sudden reductions in improving athletic performance. A study with swimmers from Australia showed that one week of reduced training was not long enough to maximize the benefits of tapering, but researchers weren't able to demonstrate an optimum tapering plan.

According to Running & FitNews Editorial Board Member Jack Daniels, Ph.D., in Daniels' Running Formula, the tapering phase sharpens the qualities needed for a successful race and can last six weeks. He warns that as mileage drops, the temptation is to increase speed--but that is not what your body needs to perform its best. Running & FitNews Editorial Board Member Pete Pfitzinger, in his Road Racing for Serious Runners gives a marathon training schedule that shows mileage decreasing from a peak at five weeks before the marathon to 40% of peak mileage the week before the race.

Tapering may still largely be a matter of guesswork and experience with each runner working it out for herself. The absolute bottom line to remember is that training intensely right up to the time of a race is a mistake. Optimize the performance your hard work and training can give you by tapering up to your race day.

Here is the source link, I stand corrected: Tapering for optimum performance - tapering training before running a race -

I just got out this morning to walk. I planned on 3.5. I cut it short at 2 miles. My shins were really tight & bothering me. I stopped at mile 1 and stretched the best I could. I didn't want to risk hobbling around the NY State Fair all day tomorrow with sore shins, so I called it a day at mile 2.

Besides, I need to get on the road to NY! ;D

Please keep fingers & everything else crossed that I can somehow finagle a way for my nieces to meet 'my boys!' I just want to make this little trip so special for them. And as much as I am a huge Goo fan, honestly - what I am going to do with yet another pic of me with them? I'd much rather freak my nieces out with meeting them! :thumbsup2

In any case, we are going to have a blast and see an awesome live show tomorrow night!

Dena -- Good luck with the blister. I had awful blisters after the 2007 WDW marathon and had never experienced such pain with every single step or bend of my feet. Take good care of yourself! (BTW, I have no good advice to add since you've heard the good stuff from the experts here).

Kristi -- great 2 miles, kiddo! Have fun this weekend! Tell Johnny I said "hi" even though he doesn't like lawyers. ;) BTW, I have "I'll Stay With You" on my running mix and ALWAYS think of you and the help you gave me during the 2006 DL 1/2 marathon when I hear that song. Forever grateful that you stayed with me through those couple of tough miles until we were past the sweeper buses.

Debra -- Missing you already, sweetie!

Steve -- Evening races are really tough. Don't beat yourself up about it and enjoy the fact that your pace was pretty darn awesome in the circumstances (what with running with a belly-ful, at night, on mostly a cross-country type course). :thumbsup2

Howard - where is that article on tapering from? Love the term "detraining effect"!

AFM -- I am in my second week of being sick with allergies that have progressed to clogged ears and a congested chest, so I am off to the doctor this afternoon. After all, I am heading to the happiest place on earth 3 weeks from tomorrow and I MUST be healthy for Judy's and my "Girls Storm the World" wild weekend. Kristi, Please DO NOT exhaust the WISH bail fund this weekend. You know how wild our Judy can be! ;)
Anyway, I did my personal training session yesterday, 150 crunches & 125 pushups last night and 2 miles running this morning. I also bought some workout gloves and some dumbbells last night and did some weight stuff last night to fill in on the areas Jeff and I didn't work yesterday. So excited that tomorrow is a rest day (except for crunches & pushups). Hoping to eek out 4 miles Saturday if I'm feeling better.

To all our Florida friends - I hate to be a pain in the neck, but please check in when you can. I worry.

Thank you, honey. You should put it in your post, too, so that it is attributed to the source AND people can go to the source if they want. (geez, I sound like a lawyer again -- quick! someone smack me. :rotfl2: )

Actually, I've saved it and added the link to my calendar for January, so that when I am "tapering" in January :surfweb: :happytv: I will feel like I am being sensible rather than lazy.

Sorry don't have any training this week to report but did want to report in and say that we made it through TS Fay - she was a rain event for us in Palm Beach County. She made more of a mess out of the counties just to the north of us - they are dealing with lots of flooding. And it seems Fay is just sitting there on the east coast around Daytona area - still dumping loads of rain with the potential to dump more. As far as winds we didn't have very much - I just appreciated the day off of work on Tuesday and ended up being lazy all day - spent most of it surfing the net and then took a nap!! Nice thing to do on a rainy day.

Tricia -- Thank you so much for letting us know how you are doing. So glad the storm wasn't too bad for you. Is it :sunny: now?

Shan -- Thank you! I hope he can give me something to relieve the congestion in my head, but mostly in my chest. It really only hurts when I try to breathe deeply and end up in a coughing fit.

Thanks for thinking of us Floridians Cam. Unfortunately it is not sunny yet. When I was out at lunch time the bottom feeder band came over us - it was real windy and big rain drops. I am hoping Fay decides to go away soon. Unfortuantely she is quite large and now is moving in a WNW motion at only 2 MPH so she is just sitting there not moving much.

**If you read onteh tri thread, you can ignore this. ;) **
OMG, I can't believe I rode 27 miles last night. We picked up my bike at 4:30, grabbed a quick dinner adn went for a group ride. I didn't work too hard, except on teh big hills. Then, I tended to fall back a bit, but I more than made up in between. OK, so we were in the slowest group, but tha twas fine as teh group ride thing was so foreign to us. We're still evaluating whther it's something we'd do regularly. While it's a bit odd in the group, we'd never go that far on our own. ANd, we'd NEVER do work out fro 1:45 during the week. I am amazed taht my butt didn't hurt when we were done. :-O Oh, my pace was 15.9 mph for 27 miles, including about 4 to 5 miles of stop and go stuff in teh "city". For 18 miles, my pace was 13.8 mph. Yeah, I think the bike works.

Today I was up and out early (7 am). Same as my race start tomorrow. Unfortunately my route runs near a school and down here school is back in session. I decided to cut short after nearly getting hit by a car for the third time. So only 2 miles in 16:50 for me today.

Hi WISHers. :goodvibes

Just got back from my R3/W2. It felt brutal, but yet my average pace was the best it has been since I started back up three weeks ago - 12:41. Neighbor didn't run with me again... Oh, well! Knee felt OK today. And that is a very good thing. Today I went 3.55 miles, not including my walking for warmup and cooldown. Next Monday on to week four! :thumbsup2

Have a nice weekend everyone! :grouphug:

I've been slacking and not posting reports - but I'm still going!

Tuesday-Friday - 5K walk and 10K bike ride every day.

I got a new bike on Saturday, I haven't ridden since I was 13 - only last year! :lmao: Ok, maybe a few years longer than that.

I am loving it - took a couple of days to acclimatize and then on to 10k. I would love to try a tri next year.

You are beating me. I am having REAL motivation issues. I actually think it's because I am still on my "work vacation" I think the lack of "structure" makes me even lazier!:lmao: I do start a real job Monday so.....

I did do three miles Wed. Was planning to do longer, but got out there and for some reason it just was horrid! :confused3 By mile three I was kind of queasy and weaving so I called it a day. And that night my legs flat out hurt. Not a clue what was going on!

Tomorrow is my Galloway Group run for five miles. Wish me luck!

Help! I've developed a HUGE blister on my heel. My running shoes have a little hole rubbed through the material right at the heel. I don't know what to do with it. Do I need new shoes? I tried covering my heel with bandaids but they rub out of place and expose the blister again. It's to the point of blood and being so painful I can't even put my shoes on. Yuck! Any magical blister cures or advice? :confused3

Bandaids don't work!

Go to the local drugstore and look for the BandAid Blister Block things. I can't recall the real name, but they are in the foot care section specifically marketed for blisters. These things STAY in place for days and really work!

Tomorrow night is the Marathon so we'll be glue to our tv .

I had to catch the women's marathon on NBC replay site. Unfortunately there is no commentary, just the race.

Did anyone else catch Paula Radcliff take a detour to the side of the road just at the half marathon mark? She had to squat down, pull her shorts to the side, and PEE!!! There is even a slow motion replay of it. Fortunately it wasn't a close up shot. :happytv:

Hi, everyone! Got in 4.6 today. Pretty slow, since I'm still fighting an ear infection and sinus infection. My running partner, Patty, and I decided to slow it way down so that I could get in any miles at all, so we did 4 laps around the cinder track at our state park. Overall pace was sub-14:00 with most of the intervals being R3/W2. We usually go out 6:30 or 6:45 am but wanted to do this at the state park and it doesn't open until 8. Started later made it tough. But I'm glad those miles are done. Hoping by the time I run again on Tuesday my chest won't be so congested.

So, how is everyone else doing? :grouphug:

OMG! That's too funny!

I got up this morning and did five miles with my Galloway Group. I have to start doing more during the week, but hopefully this week will be better.

I realized I SCREWED up. I am in the LA area this week and I could have stayed to cheer everyone on and didn't even think about it. Now it would cost a LOT to change the ticket.....

Had my last race of the summer/season today. I had to get up at 5:30 am and leave the house by 6. I don't see how you guys who run everyday that early do it. This was probably the toughest course I've raced (my practice route is still tougher though), very rolling with some decent hills and pretty narrow. It was also the biggest race I've done, but....
I PR'd 25:10 unofficially (25:12 officially)
I won my age group (including beating the girl whose always beat me)
And I finished 100th out of 260 runners (note: there were 3 high school and 2 jr. high cross country teams and those kids are FAST)

Glad to know those of you in Florida are okay.

Best,
Jennifer

Carrie Or should I call you "Speed Queen"--way to rock the bike! Sounds like you had a great ride

Tracy Glad you came through Fay unscathed and hope the remaining weather leaves soon. Good luck next weekend.

Wellesleyprincess If you keep getting faster you're going to run right off this WISH board!;) Great job on your race

I went for 21 today on my bike with a group including DH. 1:20. Maybe I should just stick to the bike and give up the running, but I'm not ready to give in yet.

Everyone else--keep at it, you're all doing great (well--better than me!)

HEY TEAM!!!!

I continue to be sorry that I can not keep up here!!! I have been continuing my training. Really not much action from TS Fay but I am a little worried about getting our 8 in tomorrow as the storms have been pretty violent here today!!!!

I will let you guys know how it goes.

BTW - I know this is completely off subject, but we leave for our cruise in 8 days  but I am completely stressed out about packing, what to expect, etc

Have fun on your cruise Angie! :yay:

Are you taking a Disney cruise?

I really enjoyed running around the deck of the boat early in the morning. Very cool! :thumbsup2

If you get the slightest bit queasy I would highly recommend you get a patch from your doc before you leave. Put it on when you're at the port. It does wonders!

My girls wanted to stay in the kid program 24/7. Literally had to beg them to come out for dinner. Put your kids in the first night so they make friends right off the bat.

Wow, I wish we could go back!

Angie: have fun on your cruise...that's the most important thing.

AFM: I made up my 4 miles I was supposed to do last night this morning early. I then had to run to the bank when it opened to get some $$ for DL. Then over to meet my friend to go see her baby that is in the NICU. The baby was a twin and was born about 3 months premature. The other twin only survived about 15 hours and was about half the size of the other twin. It's been about a month now and the baby is doing real good. Very adorable tiny little thing. The hospital and nurses are VERY VERY GOOD people!!! (Memorial Hospital Regional - Joe DiMaggio's Children's Hospital) Was there for about 3 hours. She weighs about 2 lbs 12 ounces now. Very enjoyable time with my friend and her cutie patootie baby girl. Then off to Publix and home for packing stuff and Olympics. Just got done watching the men's marathon.
Tomorrow I have a 6 miler on tap as part of the tapering. I hope to continure to pack and get most of it done.

5 more sleeps until I go out to CALI!!!!!!

Take care all WISHERS,
Tracy
