UGH! I am not in the mood for this!
Are you prepared? I think we are pretty set here! Need to check a few things tomorrow like propane and gas, but other than that, I think we have everything we need to make it through a storm.
Are you ready?

I need batteries for my flashlight, but otherwise we're GTG. I doubt it's going to be much for anyone not on the coast though.

We moved here in May of 2004, so our first experience with hurricanes was Charlie, Frances, & Jean.
We're still newbies enough that we check and restock the hurricane kit on June 1st each year. I think we're pretty much set. I filled up the gas tank on my car before going in for surgery on Thursday, and having been on pain pills since, haven't driven, so it's still a full tank. I'll just need to remember to hit an ATM for cash and I'm good.

I need to fill up the water jugs, the water in them is a few months old. We are set on propane, gas, and canned goods. Guess a bottle of bourbon may come in handy! :confused3
Now lets sit back and watch the "unprepared" freak out on Monday and Tuesday when the gas stations run out of gas! :lmao:

The bar at home is always fully stocked, and since we've been stocking up for the Hospitality Suite prior to "Our Big Fat Gay Disney Wedding" we've got plenty of booze. (No room left in the wine cabinet. I guess we'll have to drink some soon. ;) )

Charley did some real damage to our house, so we no longer dismiss hurricane preparations!
One thing we learned during the hurricanes of 2004 was that we needed WAY more supplies than is recommended. One gallon of water per person per day is completely insufficient for us. (Just watching a hurricane prep spiel and it recommends 17 gallons per person which is probably more likely, but sheesh! storing that is a challenge).
So, we're as ready as we can be. Vehicles filled with gas. Some cash, propane, charcoal... unfortunately a full freezer, so if power goes and is gone for any length of time we'll be having the Mother of all Cook Outs!
I don't much trust the forecast paths any longer either. Charley taught us that, one eh?
The intensity of Fay is not as strong as Charley, but the path could drop huge amounts of rain on our area, eh? We've had so much rain that that could end up a real problem.
What does Disney do for hurricane preparations? Hoe is it determined if the parks will close or not. Is there a system for making that decision or is the call left to one person?
OrlandoMike
08-17-2008, 11:13 AM
Disney has stages, from 1 to 5.
1 (and I would think they would be at stage 1 by now) is pretty much watch the weather.
Around stage 3 they evacuate Fort Wilderness, start tying things down and getting things ready. By stage 5 the parks are closed and guests are asked to remain in their rooms.
Just watched the update on Channel 9, and Tom Terry still has his suit jacket on, so we are fine for now!:rotfl2:

Just took the trash out, eire how calm it is, not good! The sky has "that" look!
Although the weather reports are saying "just rain" for Orlando.
We should have a contest tomorrow!
Who can find the following....
Tom Terry getting undressed!
Danny Trainer drinking!
Clair Metz blowing away on the pier!
Gail Paschal Brown in the hood for some price gouging story!
And 100 bonus points for a pic of Gretta covering the "Casey Anthony gets out of jail" story! :rotfl2:
I love preparing for the severe weather (strange, I know...), but it seems they hype us all up and then we get some wind and a few rain drops. I know 2004 was bad, but since then, I think the forecasters just like to scare us. School is closed tomorrow (just started today!) and I'm thrilled, but I'm not sure we will see much of a "hurricane". I really am thankful though!
Just read the Tom Terry posts...that guy cracks us up. He is truly the voice of doom.

Glad to hear you folks are all doing OK. My boys and I left for home the day before Charley hit and I felt SO awful for the lady who drove us to the airport. She was on the phone trying to get her elderly dad to come and stay with her (I think he was from around Panama City somewhere -- well quite a bit north of Tampa anyway) because "hurricanes NEVER come as far inland as Orlando". I got a phone call from our legal administrator last night at 10:35 telling me that the office would be open until noon today and for us to wear casual stuff since we would be packing up the window offices. I get here and pack up 90% of my boss' office, and then NOW the partners in the firm have decided that in addition to a law degree, they are now meteorologists too and even though our local weather guy is saying that, yes the prior track had the storm coming on shore around Jax at about 75 mph winds (Cat-1), the current track has it coming somewhere around St. Augustine at about 70 mph winds (strong TS). The actual damage will be about the same. BUT, since lawyers know better, the office will remain open here until 5pm and that we should stop packing stuff up. I don't see such a big difference between 70 and 75 mph winds, but then again, I'm not a lawyer.

Doesn't everyone?
Q: What is the difference between a lawyer and a catfish?
A: One is a scum-sucking bottom dweller, the other is a fish.
Q: Why is the difference between a lawyer and a rat?
A: The rat only eats it's own young.
Q: What is a lawyer worse than a T-Rex?
A: Lawyers arent exinct.

The ones I work with probably also can't tell the difference between 16" and 16'. I'm sure we'll have TONS to clean up on Friday, right? Like at POR, and PI, and Epcot. We need to make sure the Off Kilter stage is OK, right?

Yeah there are several half-empty liquor bottles in the cabinet that I'm afraid may not be "storm sturdy". I'll take care of those. Too bad "Tropical Storm Party" just doesn't have the same ring....
Plus, I never thought I'd be concerned about something named "Fay".

Oh, I was thinking more along the lines of this usage:
5. whimsical; strange; otherworldly: a strange child with a mysterious smile and a fey manner. ;)
Commonly meaning "nelly" or "too girly". I've known lots of guys who desperately tried not to be "too fey". Not always with much success.

Okay, so the Tropical Storm Fay drinking game probably wasn't the best idea.
On the way to work, I saw 17 palm fronds on the ground, 4 rather large limbs, and about a dozen trash cans on their sides. After finishing off the fifth of Jack Daniels that I keep under the passenger seat for emergencies, I was swerving too much in the rain. The nice police officer was very understanding when I explained about the drinking game, but he was a bit upset when I hit on him.:scared:
And now my boss is angry at me because, when I finaly made it into the office, I started drinking the last 7 shots out of my emergency Crown Royal bottle in my desk(two trash cans and a palm frond I'd seen on the way, but couldn't drink to, because I'd run out of booze). He actually took my bottle away from me! :scared1:
What am I supposed to do on the way home, now? :confused3 I guess I'll have to stop at the liquor store again. :upsidedow
I am, of course, only kidding about the drinking and driving, kids. I don't really drink in the car.:thumbsup2

Just because I'm totally oblivious to anything hurricane related, how has Disney World "weathered" this storm? If Gustav makes land on Saturday, do you think everything would be okay by the 4th? Am I panicking for no apparent reason about my trip on the 4th?! ;)

While Gustav is not tracked to hit Florida, it looks like it may hit the gulf region. Are you guys out there keeping an eye on this? Anyone out there in the "cone" area?
Interesting side note....the RNC convention starts the day Gustav is scheduled to hit......could get interesting!

Which it has, it's now going by the name Hanna. GREAT! Just what I wanted to hear for my trip on Thursday of next week, a storm could be over land by then in Florida.....grr.
minicoopercraig
08-29-2008, 09:18 AM
BTW, how do they know the projected path that well. I mean I was just looking at the "track" of Hanna, and she's going to make a sharp left after monday towards the Gulf (well towards the islands in the Caribbean anyway). How do they know that? Are they that good? Or do they make it turn that way? LOL.

08-29-2008, 09:21 AM
You can go to http://media.myfoxtampabay.com/myfoxhurricane/ and see the different models they use. JaxPiper can explain it better than me (he's the scientist, after all) but they look at different high and low pressure systems that could affect the track, possible wind shear, the gulf stream, etc.
Alternatively, they could be letting a 3 yr old color on the map with a crayon and see what they wind up with. I think that's what happened with Fay???
OrlandoMike
08-29-2008, 09:24 AM
Truth be told, they are getting better at predicting where they will go, but they still dont know.
Your best bet is to keep an eye on the news, and to be prepared!
If your staying at a Disney reosrt, honestly, you have little or nothing to worry about other than getting wet! Bring a poncho!
