Hi! I've been lurking on and off since our trip back in 2006 - and I've finally decided to join! I don't know what took me so long! We'll be going back to the World in May 2009 and since I had some questions, I figured this was the place to ask them! :) I'm sure I'll be on the boards all the time now that I have registered! It is very addictive!

Lynn and I are going to WDW over Xmas and then a DCL trip in October 2009. I see you are from R.I.. Where abouts? I was born in Woonsocket and spent my summers in North Smithfield where the grandparents on the mother's side lived.

For sure about everywhere in R.I. being close. Have fun in May. I'd rather be going then than at Xmas week. I miss a couple things about R.I.. The New England accent. My cousins from Woonsocket give me a fix on the accent. Fish and Chips (with vinegar) from a small family owned place in Woonsocket. Fried clams (real not frozen) from a place a mile or two north of North Smithfield called Janets.

Hi everyone! I'm from No. Smith, RI. Janets brings back a lot of memories! It's been closed for many years now, but we used to play mini golf there, have fried clams and ice cream!

Not a bad idea. It looks like everyone would not have far to go since it's R.I..:lmao: :rotfl: In my case we would have about 300 miles to drive so we can't do it. If it comes about do me a favor. Have some fried clams for me.:thumbsup2 In fact, if it does not happen have the clams for me anyway. Clam cakes, steamed, or fried does not matter. Not raw!!!:scared1:

Chris-
I used to teach dance classes up near Braintree, Ma and the kids would get such a kick out of my "accent". I never realized I had one until then. :confused3 They would ask me to repeat certain things I said and then they'd practice saying it themselves. Too funny!
Unfortunately I'm allergic to shellfish, so no fried clams or chowder for me- bummer! :sad2: I can still remember going down to Rocky Point as a kid and having clam cakes and "chowda" - yum! I wasn't allergic then! We ate at the Coral Reef in Epcot and my husband was sooo disappointed with the seafood he ordered. We later found out that New England seafood takes different from Gulf seafood.
I've always wanted to go to Disney during the christmas holidays. Though, I'd probably want to go the week after Thanksgiving or a few weeks after that to still get those decorations, but smaller crowds. I'm really going to try and avoid the crowds whenever we go from now on because I have seen just how wonderful it is when your not being run over by mountains of people. Believe me, as a kid my parents would always take us for the 4th of July. What a nightmare! :scared1: I thought that was the way Disney was all the time until we traveled in September-by accident! We went to get the free food!!! We're trying to take advantage of the less busy season while we can before DD goes to school. Then, I guess we'll have to go in the summer.

Lynn and I have done WDW in October, early December, and early January to also miss the crowds. It has worked out well. December allowed us to hit the Xmas decorations. October allowed us to take in the wine tasting of the different nations at Epcot. Not to mention taste their foods.
As a child and young adult I remember going with relatives to the sea side to go clamming. Then we would bring them back and have a clam bake. Corn on the cob, hamburgs, hotdogs, home made salads. Any clams I have now are bought in a grocery store by the bag. I miss digging for those little buggers.
As mentioned before, Lynn and I will be at WDW for Xmas. Never will do that again. We are scheduled to cruise DCL again next October during our wedding anniversary on the Magic Eastern with a family we meet a few DCL cruises ago. They are from outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Lynn is from.
I have been trying to talk Lynn into doing a cruise to the Southern Caribbean out of San Juan, P.R. for awhile and told her we should cancel the DCL cruise and do RCCL out of P.R. instead. That way we can do it later in the winter when we can get out of a week of real winter weather.
One last thing before I head out to do yard work, I work evenings. The New England accent. Spending my time in R.I. during the summers while growing up allowed me to keep that accent enough to be noticable to others around the country (dad was in the Navy). It was funny when I lived in Texas and began to catch the Southern accent the Texans have. When we finnaly moved up to where we are now in Western N.Y. people were confused as to the accent I had. Now it's just plain old English.
Catch yo later.

Hello Bristol R.I. from Hamlin (Western N.Y.), just 25 miles N.W. of Rochester. You probably picked up on the fact Lynn and I will be at WDW in December also. Xmas week, yuck. Been other better times. Long story behind the decission to go during Xmas week. When are you all going? Where are you staying? We will be at Port Orleans Riverside. We like it there because it's out of the way and a nice boat ride to DTD.

Good Morning,
Ah yes. Apples in the Fall. I remember when my brother and I and a couple friends would get brown paper bags after getting home from school and going up the road to a local apple orchard. Not like today where there was a stand or anything. We would find a place to enter the orchard that would allow us to enter without anyone seeing us. :rolleyes1 We picked apples and brought them back home. Grandma would never question where and how we got the apples. She would bake pies and turnovers. Yummy. :woohoo:

Another kid story. We loved going out into the country side where my grandparents lived to go fishing. There were a number of ponds around. Kinda like the Huck Fin thing. Once in awhile my brotherand I and a couple friends would take a couple of steel tubs along. We would go specifically for cat fish, put them in the tubs and then take them, carry them (fish and water) a couple miles to another pond. The guy who owned that pond paid us to put the cat fish into his pond. He needed bottom feeders in his pond. What a rough way to earn a couple dollars. Still had a ton of fun. My son stopped going fishing with me around the junior high years. He said we would never catch fish when I took him fishing and that was boring.
Have a good day.

There use to be a dairy parlor to get ice cream just outside Woonsocket. A major part of the place was a giant milk can. You could even watch the cows being milked through a viewing window. Any Woonsocket people remember the name of the establishment?
We liked going there more for seeing the milking than the ice cream. It was always disappointing if the cows did not get milked.

Hi Another RI here!! We always pick apples in Smithfield and Steere's is where we go!! I love your favor idea!! A variation on the caramel apple is -first dip in caramel and then drizzle with chocolate(milk and white) and then add candies of your choice(mini m&m,s crushed heathbars, crushed cookies etc..) They are as much fun to make as they are to eat!! Joan

Hee Hee....top this; my girl friend and I used to go to Morris' farm and pick green beans....but just enough to afford a Jim Dandy at Friendly's....so we would walk the mile to the farm, pick for about 2 hours, then walk another mile to Friendly's to eat this big fat ice cream sundae, then walk the mile and a half home......kids today just don't know what they are missing.:lmao:

I don't kow about the dairy parlor but you can still watch the cows being milked at Wrights Dairy Farm in North Smithfield. I believe the milk can building was being used as a drive thru coffee place at one point on R146.

I can't believe how many DISers are from Woonsocket. That is where I lived until I got married. Then I moved far away to No. Smith!!! I do remember the milk can on 146, but I don't remember the cows. My fav. ice cream place in RI was the homemade Ice Cream Machine in Cumberland. It's still great! I never went to Steere's,but recently picked strawberries and blueberries at Jaswells. I love it there! Another fav. was The Big Apple in Wrentham, Ma, but they are actually very expensive to pick from (they claim that they charge more to pick because of the wear and tear on the trees). I'm going to be working in Smithfield soon too!

Hi again. Just curious, what does FO mean?

I have been posting on a cruise thread for a couple years and we are still with the same thread since we are getting together again in October 2009for another DCL Eastern cruise. F.O. is a game we came up with. It simply means "First On", meaning you have the first post on a new page. But to get credit for the F.O. you must immediately post another note following that first page post to claim the F.O., and that must be done before someone else posts a note following your first. So, next time you see that a post you made is the first post on a page, follow it up with another post to claim the F.O..

If it was the water it must have been the Blackstone running through Woonsocket? :rotfl:

OK people. Where are you all hiding? :confused3 I'm back home from work and find nothing going on. Rhode Island isn't that big that you can hide.

OK. Come out come out from wherever you are at sunrise.

You picked a nice week... we were at Matunuk (sorry if I spelled it wrong) and we only had a few nice days. Everytime we would head out to the beach a thunderstorm would come rolling through and with this freaky weather I wasn't taken any chances with my children. We still had a fun time with all of the family though.

Just got back from a AAA baseball game between the Rochester Red Wings (Twins farm team) and the Paw Sox. The Sox went ahead 3-0 early then lost the game 4-3. :confused3 :sad2: Will send pics as soon as I can.

I just got back from Baltimore. I went to see the Orioles play the Yankees (my friend's a big Yankee fan!:confused3 ) The Sox had been there a couple of days before. Camden Yards is awesome! It is so much fun there. There is so much to do around that area. I'm planning to go next year to see the Sox, but this time w/ the kids. There is alot for all ages and it is cheaper to fly there and see a game than it is to go to Fenway! We stayed w/ my friend's friend and she got free tickets so it was much cheaper!

So where is the TS that we were going to get. I know it has rained heavy at times but they said the wind was going to be brutal in the late afternoon. I took off all my patio furniture and everything and I think we have had worse storms when they don't even say anything:confused3

Just go back from surveying the damage. I had to pick up six twigs and 12 leaves. What a storm! We lost satellite signal 10 time for at least 1 minute per. One forecaster pegged it, just like our snow storms. "It's too tough to predict, it could go East of us or it could go West of us!" But isn't that his job to predict it! I won't mention John's name but he keeps his record for not being wrong. Let me say I'm sorry if anyone did get hit hard but the news sure knows how to hype a storm.:happytv: Now if I can just return all the survival gear I bought I won't have to cancel my next trip home for lack of funds.

Tiverton & Little Compton? I though they were in Mass. Only kidding. We took a vineyard tour a few weeks ago. We loved the area. I commented to my wife it so nice here you don't feel like you're in Rhode Island. Yeah Grey's! Best Ice Cream! They have one in Bristol now. At the end of the bike trail.

I am positive Westerly seceded and joined Conn. years ago.

We saw the Princess on Ice show last Dec and we thought it was great!! We all (parents included) loved it! I believe it will be coming back Christmas week. The theme is a little different this time. You can find the info. on the Disney on Ice site.
What did you think of the new and improved Dunk? I saw a pic in the ProJo and the seats look much improved!!!

Also - Does anybody know where the "What Will You Celebrate" Tour will be in Providence? I read that it's coming on Oct 1st, but there doesn't seem to be any info out yet about where and what time?

Hi. I'm from the Bucket (Pawtucket), but grew up mainly in Burrillville. Nobody has mentioned my two fav's New York System in Olneyville-all the way with fries, extra salt and vigegar and Wright's Chicken Farm. Shot, it's Sunday night, have to wait until Thursday for them to open again.

It came in September this year. I don't think there will be a show in December. The only reason I found out it was coming in September was my friend told me about it. I thought it was in December too, so I was lucky enough to find tickets just a few weeks ago.

They did do a good job at the DDC. The seats were very comfortable, but I had not been there since the 1990 to see New Kids on the Block. That's how long it was.

I saw too that they were coming to Providence, but not sure where they will be.

There will be a Disney on Ice show coming to Providence from Dec. 26 - 30. The show is 100 Years of Magic and will feature "65 characters from 18 beloved Disney stories" including Mickey and friends, Pinocchio and the Princesses. I think we'll go to this show and take both kids this time. Last Dec. was just the princesses, so we didn't take DS. Then we went to see the circus and the Backyardigans this past spring, so we didn't get tickets to the ice show in September. "How many shows are we going to see this year!" complained my husband!:rotfl:
