View Full Version : A Jar of Whimsy - interest?

this would just be to see if anyone would be interested in this. i saw it on onther board but was very generic. i want to gear it towards us disneyers. is that a word. anyway. you take a large clean spaggehti jar and fill it with whimsy. ribbon, brads, sweets, embelies, hand made elements, anything that is fun really. does not have to be scrapbook realated. here is where the disney part comes in. there will be a group for diferent characters or groups of characters. ex if you were in the princess group you would fill your jar with pinks, purples, whites, as the colors of your whimsy stuff or if you had pirates and villians browns, blacks, silver for swords whimsy stuff. get it? i can still use help on the logistics of the idea but it sounds really fun. now because of postage we could do a couple of things. each hold on to our own jar and just send the whimsy, use large baby food jars, keep the groups small. what do you think?

Instead of a jar due to postage and breakage, what about mailing items in sandwich bags, the fold over type or a Ziploc bag they come in many sizes.
Then each person at home has a jar, or clear vase, or a walmart small fish bowel. What ever they want to use!

THis sounds like our 42 cent swap -- your idea is a little larger, and has a much more interesting name!

So it's like a themed swap... is it partners like the sisters swap? or groups?
I like the name...and that you keep your container at home... I thought we were doing altered disney ball jars or something like that...

I think it sounds like an interesting way to do an embellishment swap. Organize groups by theme, instead of by type.

This is an awesome idea. I've seen it done with paintcans. I'd be in on this one!! Havent done a swap on this board yet.
Another thing, if your not sending the jars, you can send the stuff that you would decorate the jar with. they can either use them to decorate their own jar, or scrapbooks. just an idea.

since you guys seem to know a little more about the hostess thing, does someone else want to host it? I just thought the idea sounded fun. i do agree with keeping the "jar" part at home. Maybe fill a quart size baggie up.

As long as its not too heavy I'd be in, but the postage is crippling from hre for anything major:scared1:

ok it seems like there is enough interest and since I am new I am not sure who to contact about getting on the swap calendar and what I need to do.
basic instructions would be to fill a quart size baggie up with "whimsy". Anything at all that is fun (no garbage such as flat stickers unless fuzzy or something), even if it is already been opened. example. you bought a pkg of buttons and did not use them all, put a couple in your baggie. does not need to be only store bought, it can be handmade items as well. I would start off in groups of 5. You can be in as many as you want.
signups I was thinking November and due I was thinking Dec before xmas so they could be swapped out by new years.

Dd does swaps with posters on her boards, in the UK. They[UK] sent very very very little things. She got teeny tiny little fuzzy animals chicks, ducks, and sheep stickers.
Do you save the postage stamps in your jars, too??

I was hoping someone else wanted to but I will if no one else does. I just thought it was a cute idea but I have never hosted a swap before and kinda nervous.

I can hostess it if no one especially wants too. This one would be fairly easy I am thinking although I would like us to work on a list of things that should/should not be included. I would also like suggestions on what themes we would want for groups.

I have some questions about this swap:
1. Timing- I can't have anything due too near Christams to swap out- I have too much to do as a pastor's wife. I can do sign-ups in October and it can be due end of Nov/begining Dec or I can do sign-ups in Novemeber and due in early Jan.
2. Size of packages and groups- I was thinking maybe we should do groups of about 5 and use snack size baggies. We could also do groups of any size and quart size baggies with everyone getting a random baggie back. If we try to fill quart size bags for a group of 5 we might all go broke and we will need huge boxes.
3. Group Types- What do people want?
princesses
pirates
villans
Tink and the fairies
Pooh characters
Fab 5- as a group or individually for different characters?
season of the year groups?
color groups?
other characters/movies-what do people want?
4. What should go in the jars:
ribbons, eyelets, brads, fibers, metal things, buttons, flowers, beads all seem evident but what about:
stickers- any rules on these- types people use/don't use
hand made embellishments like paper piecings, altered paper clips and small tags
diecuts and punches
stamed images
glitter, sequins, ect.
any other types of embellishments
Let me know what you think and what you are interested in.

Rebecca, how about Tink and the faireis, color baggies or baggies themed to a particular movie (not just cars or pirates)?
I would be interested in this one.

I added those things into the interest post. I would still like to know when people would want to do this.

when i first was posting about what to put in the jars it was for just about anything that is fun. anything that would catch someones fancy to use on their books, so any of your ideas in 4 would be good to me. as far as rules, this one really is an on your honor i would think. if you would like to get than it is ok. trish

Rebecca, with you being a mininsters wife and I work at a Christian school so I understand how hectic things get for you! I think the date should be at your convience since your hostessing. I know, no help at all!
But I just thought of the after Christmas clearence sales? So maybe Jan?

So, does everything have to be in it's new and original package? Like the fibers will be a cut from my hank, but I'll put then in a little baggie. But what about stickers? Can I make a "sampler" page of several sets put together? Would there be interest in that? I have a HUGE tube of little gems, so a little baggie full would be OK?
And are we stuffing a quart size baggie? or Gallon?

No- things do not have to be new in packaging- if you want to cut things down to fit that is fine- buy one thing of brads and spread them out beween all the baggies for that group. This is supposed to be a bag of inpiration for the character- little things (or bigger things) to put on pages with the characters- little things you could add to a photo mat or journal box to finish off the page. I would say you need at least 8 inches of a fiber or ribbon so it can be used on a mat. We are stuffing a snack size bag- groups will be up to 5 in number- so each person will fill 5 snack size bags per group and get 5 back. While not all bags need to be identical make them worth the same amount- one should not be just ribbon and fibers and another only brads- spread the items out between the bags.

It is the list I will start with but this isn't a hard swap so I don't mind adding groups if people want something else.

I like the Princess & Villians groups. I think the small snack bag for everyone would be perfect. Are you talking about thpse half size bags? Especially if some of us are going to do two or more groups. That way none of us go broke in the process:eek:
When did you say sign ups were again? Thanks.

Yes the small snack size bags- smaller than a sandwich bag. Sign-ups are Tuesday.
