8/17/08 Captain Jack's Repossession Repo Cruise to PC thru TPC
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff113/arlenesp/lastscan-2.jpg
Welcome! This is the latest incarnation for the Captain Jack's Repossession Repositioning Cruise to Port Canaveral thru The Panama Canal. This thread is largely impossible to keep up with, even for the most active poster. However, its a lot of fun with a great group of people, so jump in and say hi, even if you can't sit here reading 24/7.
In order to keep all of the relevant information in some sort of order, we have a Website (http://thepiratezone.info) that has a lot of good information on ports, packing, etc. There is a really good "virtual cruise" that takes you day by day through the cruise, a must see and guaranteed to get you even more excited for the cruise. While you are there, sign up for our mailing list using the webmaster link on the main page.
Most important information posted on this thread is cut/paste by the good people here and placed on our planning boards. (http://www.thepiratezone.us) This is also the place to go to sign up for any of the events you are interested, ask questions where you don't have to search through 1,000 posts to find the answer, etc.
So fasten your seat belt, keep your hands and head inside the car at all times and have fun.....

If you aren't on our mailing list or have questions about our group, feel free to pm me
We also chat ever Friday night. If the DIS chat link above doesn't work, we will be found here (http://thepiratezone.info)

Navigator Update:
If you are a task force leader, except for Peter, you should have received a PM from me this morning. Please respond ASAP to confirm the information (many of you have already - thanks!). Peter, I'll send your's tonight, the rugby info is on my other computer.
If you are planning an event and didn't receive a PM from me, and you name is not Peter, that means the event is not currently listed in the Pirate Navigator draft. Please send me the information ASAP!!!
Here is a list of activities I have so far. Please note that I did not inlcude things that will be in the regular DCL Navigator such as Mickey Mouse Club Night, Catholic Mass, etc. To keep this post from being 8 pages long, I'm only listing the day, time and title here - more details will be in the navigator. If you are a Leader, you have the details in a PM.

Thank goodness we're off #13!! Not a lucky thread for many of us.....
My kids were asking me tonight which movies were on the Magic while we're on there. I could recall Wall-E, Ratatouille, POTCDMC, College Road Trip, Prince Caspian and I think Bev Hills Chihuahua....which ones did I miss?
Thanks!

WHY IS THE RUM ALWAYS GONE??
Bad news - DCL wasn't able to schedule any rum tastings...seems someone misplaced the rum? Where's that darn Captain Swann??
See a few posts on down though for the tasting schedule.

I hate when the thread closes when I'm in the middle of doing a multi-quote!
me too.. I need more warning. LOL
Lost the multi quote... but manually copy/pasting this:
Can you rent a wheel chair and shove..umm I mean push her around in that ??
Well she's almost as tall as me (about 3/4 an inch shorter than me) and weighs MORE than I did after I had 3 kids cause she's gained some weight the last 6mo or so.... (but still weighs less than I am now, which is all fat NOT muscle) so I'd be one tired puppy pushing her big hiney around!
I'm gonna have to VETO that idea right from the start. LOL But thanks for the idea.... I appreciate you are trying to be so helpful!
Maybe DH can do that on the last day we go to DL (but the only day he's there- that Saturday). it would be a breeze for him but it would just about KILL me (probably hurt my bad back. and I don't want my back hurting for weeks! ack!)

With the overwhelming popularity of our various drink tastings, DCL had to schedule 2 sessions for beer, martini and tequila. I've scheduled everyone as best I can making sure that no one has 2 tastings scheduled on the same day. I also took into account any Palo reservations, but that's only if you posted your Palo plans on the Who's Doing What thread.
At the tasting you will be asked for your room key. The charges (approx. $12-15 per person) will be charged to your room.
All of the tastings are full, so please don't ask to be switched around. If something doesn't work for your schedule, DCL will be offering public tastings. You are welcome to sign up for any of those.
Why is the rum always gone? You'll notice that there are not any rum tastings scheduled. DCL informed us that they were not able to offer a rum tasting. Not sure if there will be a public tasting onboard or not.

Cheryl: Yes, I'm serious about the ironing... DH wants to spend the money on DOTDs instead! We'll have to bring the wrinkle releaser stuff that we have too. Maybe we can do that and not worry about it!
Lisa: You said that irons aren't allowed in the rooms? So we can't even bring our own? Do they actually say that anywhere like "Don't bother to pack your iron" or anything? Do they allow curling irons? Isn't that the same fire hazard?

This came up on the last thread. Our disposable cameras and film is 800 speed. Here is what I found on the TSA website:
Never place undeveloped film in your checked baggage, our security equipment used for screening checked baggage will damage your undeveloped film. Place your film in your carry-on baggage or request a hand inspection. Please note that our carry-on security equipment might also damage certain film if the film passes through more than five times.
If your film cannot be cleared by X-ray inspection, or you desire to have it inspected by hand, you may be required to open the box, canister, or wrapper so our Security Officer can inspect it. We recommend leaving your film in the unopened manufacturer’s packaging.
Our security equipment used for screening checked baggage will damage your undeveloped film. Carry undeveloped film with you to the security checkpoint.
None of the security equipment - neither the machines used for checked baggage nor those used for carry-on baggage - will affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed - slides, videos, photo compact discs or picture memory cards.
General Use Film
You should remove all film from your checked baggage and place it in your carry-on baggage. The X-ray machine that screens your carry-on baggage at the passenger security checkpoint will not affect undeveloped film under ASA/ISO 800.
If the same roll of film is exposed to X-ray inspections more than 5 times before it is developed, it is possible that damage may occur. Protect your film by requesting a hand-inspection for your film if it has already passed through the carry-on baggage X-ray screening equipment more than five times.
Specialty Film
At the passenger security checkpoint, you should remove the following types of film from your carry-on baggage and ask for a hand inspection:
Film with an ASA/ISO 800 or higher
Highly sensitive X-ray, medical or scientific films
Film of any speed which is subjected to X-ray surveillance more than 5 times (the effect of X-ray screening is cumulative)
Film that is or will be underexposed
Film that you intend to 'push process'
Sheet, large format and motion picture film
Tips and Precautions:
To expedite the security process of a hand inspection, you should consider carrying your film in clear canisters, or taking the film out of solid colored canisters and putting it into clear plastic bags.
Consider having your exposed film processed locally before passing through airport security on your return trip.
We recommend that you do not place your film in lead-lined bags since the lead bag will have to be hand-inspected.
You may still consider bringing a lead-lined bag if you are traveling through airports in other countries as their policies may vary. Check with your airline or travel agent for more information on foreign airports.

OK so I walked the furr kids and on the way back, Isis the diva, goes to smell something in the grass. Just about freaks - literally jumps 3 ft in the air - and turns in mid-air and runs back - her tail goes completely between her back legs and she starts shaking. It was the freakiest thing. I'm not sure what she smelled but it definitely freaked her out. She about yanked my shoulder out of the socket. It scared me because she was shaking and breathing hard like she just ran a marathon.
Not sure what she smelled as I could not get her to go back. In fact, I had to cross the street and she was about crying to have Chloe come over. Steve took Chloe over to see if she smelled anything and that dog lived up to her reputation - all looks and no brain. She was normal. Remember, Isis was the dog throwing herself at the ground the whole day before the earthquake. I call her my sensitive one. It took about 3 blocks before she was able to walk "normally" and her tail to come out from between her legs. This is what freaked me out the most. This dog's tail is ALWAYS out on walks. But this freaked me. Anyone have any ideas. She's normal now - laying down - she walked for 55 minutes. But I am definitely going to have to watch her tonight to see if she has nightmares. Her poor chest was heaving like someone had beat her and her eyes got that wild look to them - whatever she smelled scared the living daylights out of her.
It would be funny if I hadn't had my left shoulder almost yanked out of me. Of course, had that happened, I would have laughed my behind off.:rotfl2:

Well she's almost as tall as me (about 3/4 an inch shorter than me) and weighs MORE than I did after I had 3 kids cause she's gained some weight the last 6mo or so.... (but still weighs less than I am now, which is all fat NOT muscle) so I'd be one tired puppy pushing her big hiney around!
yanno BIP.... if her and dd get along...I could push her along... (i need the extra workout and dd would have someone to talk too.)
BTW she might have just yanked the toe (ie like a sprain) i did that two weeks ago and my toe hurt like heck to walk and put weight on it in gym classes but i managed and in about a week or so it got better...
Lisa: You said that irons aren't allowed in the rooms? So we can't even bring our own? Do they actually say that anywhere like "Don't bother to pack your iron" or anything? Do they allow curling irons? Isn't that the same fire hazard?
Yes no irons... Curling irons OK but don't leave plugged in our you'll get a nice letter from guest services...
OK so I walked the furr kids and on the way back, Isis the diva, goes to smell something in the grass. Just about freaks - literally jumps 3 ft in the air
Poor fur-kid...
My baby (yeah all 118 lbs of her) freaks out when i walk her around the block and try to walk past CUJO's yard (i really don't know this pitbulls name but it did almost come over the fence at us a few times then the owners got an invisible fence added as a precaution:rolleyes1 Guess i wasn't the only one he almost ate.). Abby still refuses to pass that yard on that side of the block. She makes me cross the street.

:rotfl2: Believe me that has been hashed over a million times. Apparantly they are very serious. Don't worry- the Wrinkle Releaser works well and it should be a relatively small trek to the laundry room.
FYI- It was only $1.75 to have them press a full pleated linen shirt that takes me 15 mins to iron at home so.... if you have a few you might want to pass on one DOTD (or better yet, tell DH that he can have his DOTD but HE has to iron). :rotfl:

On pirate zone we discussed a photoshare...
SO far we have 7 families signed up... (1 had to decline)
If anyone else is interested, it looks like the costs would be around 15-16 bucks for your own cd with as many photos as the photographers can take or you edit in either DL or DW....
I have room for a few more families. (each one added lowers the cost to all involved)
PM me before tomorrow night if interested....

WHY IS THE RUM ALWAYS GONE??
Bad news - DCL wasn't able to schedule any rum tastings...seems someone misplaced the rum? Where's that darn Captain Swann??
See a few posts on down though for the tasting schedule.
Thanks Monica, Laurie, and Tracy for getting this set up!

She could have also just badly bruised it. I had that happen to my middle toe once when a hunk of frozen chopped meat fell out of the freezer on it. I screamed bloody murder, got taken to the ER, had an x-ray, and was told it wasn't broken, just badly bruised. The doc told me to buddy tape it and it would heal on it's own. And I missed a week of gym in school :cool1: . Unfortunately, docs never do much for injured toes.

When you take an underwater photograph, they usually come out all blue and washed out as the red light component gets absorbed once you get down more that 5 feet.
There's a 14 step process in Photoshop which fixes the colors back to what they should be.
Before:
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/5844/pa120215640x480ca7.jpg
After:
http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/4057/pa120215640x480hn8.jpg
But doing this by hand for every phograph is time consuming. So PS can remember the sequence of commands used to fix the photos, then replay them for each pic you want done. You can then then have PS run this remembered sequence on a whole folder of pics, saving a whole bunch of time for DIS :)

Somehow - I totally see that in my brain. I don't mess with dogs anymore. Isis has bitten 2 little dogs but they came charging at her and mine were on the leash - their's weren't. The second one I told the girl to pick her dog up or Isis would lounge at her - she didn't, mine did and the dog still came back for more. I think its a size issue. ;)
Other than that - she (Isis) totally leaves other dogs alone. On walks she's got other things to smell.
As for dogs, my son Andrew was mauled by a German Shepard at age of 9. Got quite a few hundred stitches and quite a nice settlement out of it. Now if I can only get him to understand that settlements don't last forever. :rotfl2:

Moving out early tomorrow..DD has to serve at Mass at 8 and then we are off to meet Chrissie and Brendan for a trip to Hollywood. I will take pictures! (hopfully I remember the camera..it's already in the packing pile)
We have a birthday party tomorrow nite and then home. DD is grouchy..had school for 6 days in a row (have to start working on next weeks with all the craziness going on) She is still up but I am telling her that she has to get some sleep!

I think the irons are in the laundry rooms. Don't remember one actually in my cabin. But I just sent my stuff out to be pressed, it's a vacation after all.
We just asked 'Cabin Dude' to bring one when needed.

There are irons in the rooms, right? Just making sure we don't have to pack one!
Noppers but they supposedly are in the laundry rooms. Since it is so inexpensive I washed my own clothes and sent them out to be pressed. They did a GREAT job. I am bringing a lot of linen so I am doing that again.
That is one of the things I allow myself as well. For about $20 ALL the ironing is done for the entire trip. I could spend an hour just ironing the button down shirts for four boys for formal night, not my idea of vacation: send it all out as soon as you unpack it and it will be back the next day.

After giving the driver a piece of her mind, she was pretty shaken up and in tears riding home. She decided that she wasn't going to chance it and will stay off the bike until after the TOAL!!
Christopher,
We plan to go for a bike ride on Castaway Cay. June (and anyone else) is welcome to join us:thumbsup2
No suburbans, no streams, no dogs--just a flat path..should be safe;)
I think Roger and family was considering this also.
Should be fun:goodvibes

Anyone have any recommendations for a small video camera? I was in Best Buy yesterday and a little overwhelmed with the choices. I didn't know if the mini dvd ones were better, the ones with the built in hard drive or the ones with the sd cards. I'm considering this purchase instead of a new camera.
Thanks!

If there is anyone who doesn't have trip insurance, please get it.
My step mother and her daughter called yesterday morning to tell us my father died. I asked when they were planning to have the funeral and they said Friday. I got a call later saying the family has decided to have the funeral on SUNDAY instead.
So I had to cancel. I'll get a refund. DCL refunded half yesterday and I have to turn in calm forms to the insurance company for the balance.
Since I didn't book airfare with DCL, I may be out of that expense.
Is there anyone here who hasn't purchased DL park passes yet? I have two of the three day Southern California passes. If someone needs them, they are yours (no charge). They expire on the 30. If I don't give them way, they will be wasted.
If anyone is interested, PM me and I'll overnight them before we head to South Carolina on Tuesday.
If no one here needs them, I'll try to give them away on DL board when I return.
Sorry to be a downer in the mist of all the excitement.
Enjoy your TOAL and please take/post plenty of pictures.

http://www.tecnoblog.cl/wp-content/imagenes/nuevacamarahandycam_dvd108.jpg
Warning.... L-O-N-G story comin'....
I recently bought a fairly basic Sony Mini-DVD camcorder (sony dcr-dvd108) with a cynical attitude ... I held that video footage had marginal utility to us - especially given that I concentrate on digital STILL photography ... which is why I took the lowest possible cost approach to this ... and I finally found it on clearance for a pittance at BEST BUY ... however it was missing it's battery, charger and the minor accessories.
You see, for years I've shot only still images and movie clips off the little digicams (80,000 shot in the past 8 years) ... and in recent months my DSS (Dear Sweet Spouse) has been grumbling about how we have NO high resolution movie clips or footage of the kids in recent years. My reply was ... well, we've HAD camcorders however, when each camera eventually broke - we ended up with a collection of tapes (VHS, mini-VHS, and now we had dozens of these miniature Hi-8 sized tapes if I'm not mistaken - all UNVIEWABLE without my original camera working. Now, I've got to PAY someone something like $25 to convert each to DVD... or I have to FIND someone with a working camera in each tape size so I can somehow PLAY each tape to somehow TRANSFER each to a current viewable format ... like DVD. This would cost a mint (money and or time) to convert several dozen tapes with a resultant total cost that is simply insulting IMO ... which raises the question ... that the NEXT camcorder had better output to a versetile format that might side step the long-term viewability issue.
http://successbeginstoday.org/wordpress/wp-content/thinking.gif
Well, we simplisticly settled upon the idea that a DVD burning camcorder seems to have the greatest utility now - as I had no great love for the idea of a 20GB hard drive camcorder outputting through firewire (for which I have NO port on my computers!). I could just see it now... I'd have to buy new higher powered computers plus ... in short order I'd have a 1 terabyte deep storage drive with 49 folders of 20GB size (980GB of the 1000GB capacity occupied).... covering just 49 occassions which I had filmed to capacity on the camcorder and I'd be rubbing the tip of chin in bemused reflection - now that I NEED another storage drive ... should I now buy that new cheaper 2 or pricey 5+ TB drive! Arrrgh! The storage capacity requirements with those things left me rejecting the idea out of hand without much reflection! This is in spite of the sales man commenting "Oh, but you'll discard all the footage you don't want pretty easily - so the final files sizes won't be that large".... OK... fine for HIM to say so... but I have video tapes which I've NEVER reviewed.... but instead I stored them for later viewing - not fully realizing they would become old old memories for maybe someone else once the original camcorder broke - which they all eventually did. SO ... many / mosty of my video footage would ultimately be UNEDITED - most likely.
SO .... we choose DVDRW in spite of the formats' annoying limitations. I've bought 50 discs off ebay and ended up spending (vaguely recalled) $17 for 50 discs... rated for 30 minutes however I tend to get only 19-24 minutes capacity as reported by the camera. I think Sony has designed in niggly defenses against folks like me using NON-sony DVD media and batteries. Which is smart of them - but annoying to a huge extent. It smacks of the tactics they employed when they started selling music CDs with INTENSE encryption... and anti-sharing self loading software - designed to shut down those creative pirates who were ripping music to their computers to share.... that is to share among MORE than their 2 or 3 personal MP3 devices... rather these few pirates were retransmitting the files among 100s if not 1000s of others ... often for FREE.
SO ... given the Sony DVD media is far more expensive... I still would choose again to go generic - as even with the reduced capacity rating I save tons. As for the battery incompatibility - I've found a go-around with the generic manfg supplied auxillary power supply cable (see image below). The cable itself is a bit of an annoyance ... but I bought a battery for $8 and another for $20 INSTEAD of buying the Sony branded battery for $90 with thier slightly lower power rating!. So yeah... this alone saved me $150... which is about what I paid for the camera. By my reckoning I saved near $350 with my clearance camera + 2 generic bateries ... and I saved another $150 with my generic DVDRW media. The Sony DVDR seem to sell cheapest on PRICE GRABBER for $17 on a 5 pack of Sony discs.... and I paid $17 for 50 TDK discs. Thats' approximately 10x the number of discs for the same price... or $170 of Sony disks for $17... saving $153.... and I just rounded it down for simplicity. http://cameras.pricegrabber.com/camcorder-video-media/m/18382095/
http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/L10783373.jpg
All told ... the way I approached this... I got the Camera, 2 hi-cap bateries, the charger + 50 discs of media with an average of 70-75% of rated capacity for $500 (not counting $40 sales tax saved!) less than if I bought brand new / factory sealed / all branded Sony stuff. This amounts to 71.4% savings.... mostly magnified with my 90% media savings. Which IMO is most important ... as I intend to buy MORE media once I burn throgh these first 50 discs. Of whcih I am now upon my 9th disc. One was already damaged - and rendered unreadable thorugh an accident while it was "finalizng" and vulnerable.
I am pleased to say, the most interesting DVD disc I've shot so far was recent the dental appointment of my daughters TOOTH extraction... something I dare NOT show her until shes' much older! We stored this DVD with the actual tooth extracted - and given over by the "tooth fairy"!!! This alone makes having had the DVD camcorder ... priceless. Of course, without the camcorder I would have shot lower resolution digicam footage at 340x240 ... or maybe VGA (640x480).
So would I recommend another "basic" DVD camcorder? For MY level of sophistication - and for my simple-minded approach - this is perfectly acceptable. Would I buy new? Well... yes. Knowing what I know now... buying new would be just fine .... however, I would take the savings with media that's 90% less costly and only suffers a SONY induced 25% reduction in recording capacity.
Then again... maybe there is NO reduction in capacity... MAYBE I can shoot in a lower quality mode and gain the full 30 minutes of recording time??? I vaguely recall seeing a couple options for image quality inthe menus... but I'm not sure because I'm the kind of guy who rarely reads the manual. It's more fun for me to experiment for a few weeks or months BEFORE I break down and read the manual to look up doing something I couldn't otherwise figure out! < wink >

Laura,
Our dog (just about a year old now) Bleu freaks out when she sees bicycles or baby carriages. She is a lab mix and only weighs about 44 lbs, but she will practically drag me home if she encounters one of those. Thank God she doesn't weigh more!

Well I have found the suitcases
Then you're doing better than me, I'm still waiting for one to be delivered. I pulled them out last weekend and realized that a seam had split on on the wheeled duffle. I ordered a new one from Eddie Bauer and I'm keeping my fx that it will be delivered tomorrow. We aren't leaving until Saturday morning though, so I have some frantic evenings after work this week to get the packing done.
And DS's fever from Friday is gone, but has turned into a full-blown cold instead. I'm soooo glad that this is happening this week and not next week. Although I have this sinking feeling that he'll be fine next Sunday while I'll be boarding the ship with a whopper of a cold.

:rotfl2:
Well, that was crystal clear! :rotfl:
(show-off) :rotfl2:
Oh Poor June - ::yes:: please tell her to stay off the bike - we want her on here! Stay well June! :flower3: and some pixiedust: wont hurt either. :tink:
OMG Laura, I was bitten by a German Shepard when I was 7 years old. He took half my lip and I had to have very painful reconstructive surgery for many years as a child. It really stunk growing up because kids can be very cruel and I was called "scarface" for many years of my life. It was very tough. I am now 48 and still have the scar on my face. It has always been hard for me to talk about it and most people I know, I don't tell that to until I know them very well or if they ask (and most people don't). I hope your son Andrew was okay from it. I can understand what he went through.
I am also very wary around dogs. It is kind of ironic that our beloved dog, Chivas who we put to sleep last September, and was our first dog as a family, was a German Shepard mix. She was the kindest, most loving dog in the world.

There is no way I will catch up with the last 2 threads. I've only read a small portion of each.
Although, I am caught up with this thread. For how long, I have no idea. Still have a lot to do. I took DS out school (clothes) shopping yesterday, why is it when some boys become ST, they are almost as bad as some girls are in what type of clothes they get? Still have more shopping to do for school. I did happen to buy him another pair of dress pants and a couple of dress shirts. DH went and bought a suit finally, he's always had some dress pants and shirts but never a jacket (except for fire co uniform). I need to get the suitcases out and start to pack away the things we don't need yet. I am the one who does all of the packing as I can not trust what DS will bring. and DH always seems to forget something.
I also have things set up for MIL while we are gone. I just need to get things set up for work while we are away.
Prayers and pixiedust: to all that need it
:thanks: to all that arranged things we will be doing
:bday: and Happy Anniversary to all I've missed over the last few threads.
:welcome: to all newcomers.
1 more week for the TOAL party:
Okay, I need to go now. Bye, will see everyone in a week.

Full fledged panic mode seems to have set in. I'm sleeping even less then usual - yesterday I was up at 5:15, today I was up at 6:30 then for good at 7:45 - I normally sleep until at least 9 on Sundays!
Today I'll be reworking the packing that I already did plus finishing the rest of it. Printing the last of the magnets, getting together all the toiletries and various med's purchased and packed, books together and packed, carry-on for me packed (except for the laptop!) and DS's backpack packed up. DH got all the camera stuff packed up on Thursday - one whole carry-on size suitcase with cameras, video cameras, DVD's to burn pictures to, power strip and lord only knows what all else!
THis will be the 2nd time I'm repacking these suitcases, which is probably a good thing as I keep deciding to not take stuff because I just know that I won't wear it. I had a packing list all laid out and yet I haven't followed it for myself at all!
Tea is done and anisette toast is finished - best get my rear in gear. Have a great day all!

In front of me is four large empty suitcase's, I was hoping if I look at them long enough, and think of the cruise, they will fill themselves of the clothes I wish to take, but the Suitcase Fairy seems to be on strike.

Tanya,
I am sorry for your loss.
Crash,
Thank you for the very detailed post!! I am considering going to a mac computer in the not so distant future and I am not sure if I could edit movies and such as easily with the little dvds. However, for some reason I feel more secure with that kind of media. Hard drives and sd cards can crash or get erased easily, right? :) The way I make decisions, I am not sure I can make this one by Friday...

If I may be a bit personal, so that I can remember him in my prayers and Masses, would you PM me and let me know his name. Also, where his funeral/burial will be? Sorry, again, for your loss.

I have a great idea Andy....I'll just send you my pictures and you can fix them for me!!

Found this on another thread from a trip last week ~ thought BIP? and a few others would be interested.
We arrived at the waiting taxis and tried to bargain for a price to take us to Sea Life Park. Previous trip reports had said they paid $40 to get there, so when I negotiated down to $28 I thought I did a pretty good job. We were taken to a really small car for the 4 of us and we proceded to wedge ourselves in. The drive was only 15 minutes, not the 30 minutes we had been told. As we were leaving, I asked the guy at the photo counter how much a taxi back should cost, he said no more than $15, which meant we had been charged double on the way over! He asked me if I remembered the cab number or anything and of course I didn't. He told us that he could report them for double charging us if we knew the information. When we got the cab on the way back, he said $20, and I said they told me inside $15 and he said ok. For future cruisers, the cost should only be $15.
Going into Sea Life Park, we noticed it was owned by Dolphin Discovery, the same people who owned the park where we did our Dolphin excursion in Cozumel last year. We checked in and were told where the lockers and bathrooms were and where to meet for the excursion. We were also told that all the water slides were reopened! The kids were pleased. When we found the lockers they were in the bathrooms, so

Morning all, my goal was to be packed by Saturday, well guess what that did not happen. I did however iron my shorts/pants. I still have a load of laundry to do on Tuesday/Wednesday. My cat is having anxiety now that I have started packing. He is throwing up fur balls everywhere. Funny how they know when you are leaving and I am having neighbors look after him rather than boarding him. Oh well just finished breakfast, watching tennis at the Olympics, but need to get up and start ironing my tops to make outfits and see where I am. I am heading off to tan at 10 am and then my girlfriend is coming up for my massage (hence why I wanted to be packed by Saturday). Catch you all later!

Tanya,
I am sorry for your loss.
Crash,
Thank you for the very detailed post!!
If you're on the cusp of equipment / hardware upgrade/update.... if you're planning on having decent POWeR.... and you have time to learn/practice editing... then the way to go seems to be the HARD DRIVE camcorder. If you want operational resilancy... consider a solid state media based camcorder.
I've heard that MACs are tremendous with their video handling capabilities. Maybe you should sit down in one of those Mac stores to pick the brains of customers looking over thier video camera displays - and once you're comfortable with the "basic" core issues - you can challenge an Apple sales "expert" in this department to "convince you" on buying a Mac with an eye for movie editing.
If you want minimal OR zero editing simplicity - then my DVD camcorder approach is good.
CORRECTION.....
It seems the HDD camcorders may have issues - especially if they are limited to shooting in MPEG-2... http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=287431 .... so it seems you might want to shoot in miniDV tape!!! http://www.macworld.com/article/133790/2008/06/camcorder.html
BTW... another thought is .... are you EVER going to want your footage to be of a HIGH DEFINITION quality? http://ask.metafilter.com/79894/HD-Camcorder-importing-problems-on-a-Mac I deliberately passed on this due to the higher storage / power demand issues predicted. Plus the cost was beyond my artifically imposed budget - which in turn was influenced by my cynical attuide towards the whole thing!
I'm just a PEANUT GALLERY CRITIC.... and you'll be better off talking to someone whos' shooting nd editing video succesfully. Having said that.... this was still an issue I felt like "spouting" over!
http://blogs.salon.com/0001118/images/2002/12/17/critic01.gif
IF I were not already eye-ball deep committed to digital still photograly I MIGHT consider the digital hard drive camcorder. ALAS, I'm married to my still format... for LIFE. So I just took a tangental "walk on the wild side" approach to movie making.

ON the other hand - I do have a brand new Olympus 850 SW underwater capeable digi-cam... however I assume it comes with an underwater shooting setting that color correcs for the red shift in the images.
Thanks fer da offer just the same. Ad a lot of my images were shot with an early Canon G-1 ... which has a humble 3MP sized sensor. Even now... I'm getting by with a modest 10D shooting 6MP images!

Finally packed & just finishing off domestic things like cancelling milk & advising Credit card companies. Dental on Tuesday - family outing!

After yesterday's fly across the handlebars, June has several scrapes and bruises to show for her spill. But she was a trooper and today we went for a long bike ride. Near the end of the ride, she tried to avoid a lady and her dog and almost ended up in a stream. Less than a minute later, she almost got hit by a Suburban:scared1:
After giving the driver a piece of her mind, she was pretty shaken up and in tears riding home. She decided that she wasn't going to chance it and will stay off the bike until after the TOAL!!
We hope June is ok. I am really sorry and if there is anything you need let me know. Still trying to catch up on the new thread wow, leave for second and it's just going fast and crazy.

Things have been so crazy around here getting ready to leave early Tuesday morning, so I have not had much of a chance to be online. Finishing up last minute errands, and rounding things up, etc.
I have been so sleep deprived, what a great way to start off a vacation, eh?
We will be doing all the packing and most of the laundry (so we can pack) done tomorrow.
Talk to everyone soon!
Talk with you soon Michelle - I am also doing last minute errands as of yesterday - finally with all stress DD6 finally found a pair of shoes she liked for her formal dress and it was a bit stressful. LOL :lmao: and we picked up our dresses at the tailors yesterday and they are just great. DD6 actually enjoyed being in her dress. Now I just got to convince her to do something with her hair and little nervous about that when the comes. She has a mind of her own :rolleyes1 :headache: But she is so cute at times too.
At this time thats about 100% more effort than me.

When you take an underwater photograph, they usually come out all blue and washed out as the red light component gets absorbed once you get down more that 5 feet.
There's a 14 step process in Photoshop which fixes the colors back to what they should be.

But how does PS remember it? I have a whole bunch from DH's trip to Honduras that I need to edit still (the trip was in Feb!) and then I'll have a bunch from our cruise too...
The only problem I have with automating is that there was a few times where it just didn't look right... They came out too red or something.

Finishing up packing today....After inspecting one of our pieces of luggage, after 10+ years of mishandling by the airlines, it's better we not take the chance with it anymore (broken handle, torn edge, zipper sticks, etc). Off to the store.... to buy another piece or two. I had suggested duct tape, :lmao: but that idea got shot down.

Safe travels!!! We'll be there Tuesday!!:cool1:

Lisa: You said that irons aren't allowed in the rooms? So we can't even bring our own? Do they actually say that anywhere like "Don't bother to pack your iron" or anything? Do they allow curling irons? Isn't that the same fire hazard?

Is there laundry service?
Onboard laundry and dry-cleaning services (with stateroom pickup) are available for a charge. There is also a self-service Guest Laundry Room with coin-operated washers and dryers, along with detergent and ironing equipment. For safety reasons, the provided irons or steamers may be used in the laundry room only; personal irons cannot be brought aboard.

Andy
Can you do this for GIMP also and send it to me....

I think I've already spoken of the little girl in our neighborhood who was RUN OVER by a driver backing out of thier driveway? The Dad was following behind his 2 kids as they rode thier bikes through the neighborhood on the side walks (i believe) and he was not close enough to warn his youngest daughter in time to avert the accident.
I used to think it was just cars on the road to watch for - as well as debris in our paths - or dogs and such. However, the hazard of a reversing car from the driveway was one I used to not consider at all!
Fortunately - the victim survived and seems normal outwardly and she swims on our swim team. We've know the family for a couple years and they are among the nicest folks. It's so unfortunate that this happened to them?!
At any rate... I don't blame your daughter for being in tears on the ride home. After my bicycle accident I started riding again - and found it uncomfortable when similar circustances arose to that when I was hit!

Did you have it x-rayed? Is it broken? Lisa (DD14) jambed her finger two weeks before an important competition. They thought it was broken at first, but they didn't think so after they x-rayed it. They just taped two of her fingers together. She avoided using it for 4 days and was back tumbling on it after that. Hopefully Ruby will heal quickly and this situation won't be as bad as you fear.:wizard:

Bringing this up in case anyone missed it
With the overwhelming popularity of our various drink tastings, DCL had to schedule 2 sessions for beer, martini and tequila.

Okay, I don't remember where in Target I saw this last week, but I know it was not the laundry aisle actually which is where I would have looked as well!! Well, our target has the laundry stuff all broken up. It might have been near the fabric softener or by the starch for ironing. I think we'll target reaching the port around 9am.... but I'll be dropping Alicia and the kids off while I swing by LAX to pickup her parents... then detour for a friends' place in Torrance who will hop on and take my car after I get out at the port with her parents. You see... we want to escort Alicia's Mom and Dad ... and my friend is saving us about $200 versus parking at LAX .... plus cab/shuttle fare from LAX to the port... or alternatively it would have been maybe $240 round trip for a shuttle van from Westlake to Port... and LAX home.
So ... Alicia should be loitering around 10AM... and I hope to return with her parents around 11:15-11:30AM. If we get aboard we can be found initially at the buffett pushing the strollers. Two singles this time.

The only problem I have with automating is that there was a few times where it just didn't look right... They came out too red or something.
I had that problem too, is went away when I did a forced save in the 'Action' sequence at the end.
There's a bunch of stuff on the net about the 'right' way to do correction, but this'll do for now.

Yes and yes. And we do.
Sure!
However, if your luggage gets lost before we embark .... then you lose ALL your mobile power capacity for your E-toys... unless .... you find another friendly DIS neighbor with the same E-toys as you!
Actually I think the answer is now NO. Here is the new TSA guidelines that started 1/1/08. TSA Link (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm)
Safe Travel with Batteries and Devices
Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will no longer allow loose lithium batteries in checked baggage.
Some Tips for Safe Travel With Batteries
Keep batteries and equipment with you, or in carry-on baggage - not in your checked baggage! In the cabin, flight crew can better monitor conditions, and have access to the batteries or device if a fire does occur.
Buy batteries from reputable sources and only use batteries approved for your device – avoid counterfeits! A counterfeit battery is more likely to cause a fire in your equipment – costing you more in the long run, and compromising safety.
Look for the mark of an independent testing or standards organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
Do not carry recalled or damaged batteries on aircraft. Check battery recall information at the manufacturer's website, or at the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Only charge batteries which you are sure are rechargeable! Non-rechargeable batteries are not designed for recharging, and become hazardous if placed in a battery charger. A non-rechargeable battery placed in a charger may overheat or cause damage later.
Only use a charger compatible with your rechargeable battery – don’t mix and match!
If original packaging is not available for spare batteries, effectively insulate battery terminals by isolating the batteries from contact with other batteries and metal. Do not permit a loose battery to come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry.
Place each battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package, or place tape across the battery's contacts to isolate terminals. Isolating terminals prevents short-circuiting.
Take steps to prevent crushing, puncturing, or putting a high degree of pressure on the battery, as this can cause an internal short-circuit, resulting in overheating.
If you must carry a battery-powered device in any baggage, package it to prevent inadvertent activation. For instance, you should pack a cordless power tool in a protective case, with a trigger lock engaged. If there is an on-off switch or a safety switch, tape it in the "off" position.

If the batteries are LITHIUM, then the answer is NO. They recently changed this and no LITHIUM batteries are allowed in checked luggage - they much be in carryon. You can put the charges in, but as someone else said if the luggage gets lost you'll be unable to charge....

Hi guys...
I did the WB.. Hope you have a GREAT time!!! WE certainly did!!!
Just a quick one that is brought over from another thread..
Another thing to add to your packing (sorry...)
Make sure you bring cold meds with you. We all got what we affectionately call the "Cabo Crud" which was a cold that went around about the time we hit Cabo...
The store on board ONLY had Dayquil.... NO Nyquil... so I would suggest you throw something in if you think you will need it. I know CVS and Walmart both sell the boxes of Dayquil and Nyquil together... I had some and shared it with my fellow Disers who were hurting. ALSO... bring cough drops... I suggest Ricola... the cherry is very good - just in case you get a cough... better to have it than not.
Anyway... have a great time!!!
