Well, our friends have just returned from staying at Pop Century. According to them, there is a lot of activity on the other side of the Generation Bridge. They are apparently working on Pop Century Legendary Years. Our friends said that they have started installing glass in the windows of the buildings. It sure doesn't look like they are going to be tearing them down.

The existing buildings have had glass for years.. and doors!
For proof - have a look here:

This report of work being done jives with the report I updated on that thread in 06/2008 (see that thread for details (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=25628773&postcount=203)) ... that was viewed with some skepticism here on the boards.
I'll visit Pop Century in September and confirm in fact work is being done over there. In the meantime, I'll send my 'spies' over to see if they can see anything :)
All of this if it proves to be true coincides nicely with a post I made earlier this year indicating that there were rumors of planned construction to start in 'fall' of 2008 ...
Interesting report. I hope its true.

FWIW, a few weeks ago one of the bartenders at POP told me that they're taking bids from contractors to do the Legendary Years construction. From the looks of it, they'll need to undo a lot of what's been done (getting rid of all the overgrown brush, grass, etc.) before they can start the actual construction.
man, i hope this is true. pop is great as is but the new addition will enhance it even more! i hope we can get some dis'ers over there soon to confirm or deny

Or not..
Last year there was a BMX dirt track created in on the Legendary Years side of the resort for an event.
That was removed in the last week.. but according to my sources.. that's all that has been happening.
We'll stay on this on this tho. Cause obviously that's not windows. :)

It would be nice if they finish the other half of Pop.
I am not getting my hopes up though because the activity could be just a staging area for supplies for the refurbshing of the CBR Nemo and PotC rooms.
Just an FYI:
CBR resort is located very near Pop.
I am waiting to read what CanadianGuy's spies have to say.

As I posted last month, when DH and I checked in to POP July 5th, the CM that checked us in said that there were Imagineers there measuring for the large icons needed at the Legenday Years Resort.
Keeping our fingers crossed! Jennifer:goodvibes

Having Imagineers out measuring the letters makes no sense at all. The obviously have designs for what is existing and for what was planned so they would have no need to go out and make measurements. Obviously the CM with just making up a story. Hopefully the rest in this rumor is not a story in the second half of the resort will be finished! :worship:

Say Hello to WDW's first all-suite resort.
But a bus driver told me that it was going to be the first Value DVC resort! :)

I was at Pop on July 19 and August 2--the bookends to my DVC vacation. It did look like people were over there doing something. It looks so bad over there right now that it would be great to see it completed and opened--buses would be no worse if shared than the ones at All Stars or POFQ/POR. After the trial run of the suites at ASMu perhaps they see a market for families that are greater than four in size. It would be nice to see an alternative to 2 rooms for these families and since the rooms for 5 at POR aren't much good once the kids are over 10 it would be nice to see an alternative.

I really hope that they finish Pop soon. It was a sin to have it sitting there like that.

I'm not sure why they would decide to finish it now with the economy so bad, tourist levels dropping, and Disney making other cutbacks. You can tell that there are less people there at this time period, even from just last year at this time. It just doesn't make good business sense to me.
I live right down the road, so next time I'm at the park, I'll take a bus over to see what I can see, but I really do doubt that any activity going on over there is work to actually finish the Legendary Years. Not when they're cutting show's, character dining, etc. in preparation for the extremely slow travel period ahead.

I dont know that I agree that Disney is hurting economically.....from what I understand - due to the weak dollar foreign tourists are planning more trip here....maybe the value resorts are needed even MORE for the people that still can make a trip to Disney.......
Just thinking out loud.....if I usually stay in a moderate or deluxe but I cant afford that next year I know that I WOULD be very happy to stay in a family suite.....just me though.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Having more lower priced rooms may keep people coming and staying on site instead of not coming in all or staying off site both of which would cost Disney $'s. Completing the Legendary Years especially if they are family suites may be just the ticket.

What you say makes sense, although the dollar isn't nearly as weak as it once was and is continually gaining strength.... I bet they're using it as construction headquarters..for cbr *oh how I hope I'm wrong*
Disney is becoming known for allowing things to be eaten alive by the wilderness and I doubt this will be any exception... at least for the time being.

I'll be at pop as well and intend on being very nosy too! :thumbsup2

Will be there in September (staying at POP) and will keep my eyes out.
I sent message on WDW official site to ask over a month ago, along with another question regarding my trip. I got a call back, and they told me that nothing had been decided yet about the future of the second phase yet.

I do hope they will be able to open it and I have a feeling that they will, Disney is need of more Value resorts, they are usually the first to sell out. Think about it for all you New Jersey folks for Jersey Week, if they make it an all suite resort!
One can hope for it right!

Don't forget.. if they started right this minute on an ordinary construction schedule .... those potential 'value suites' wouldn't see their first guest til January of 2010 at the absolute soonest I wouldn't think. There are still at least 8 more buildings, each with three 'wings' to be built... landscaping to be done.. interior finish work on all 10 buildings ... etc.
Disney might just planning to catch the next 'upswing' in the economy by having these ready.

Maybe this is what they'll be announcing from MK on 10/3 and 10/4, and perhaps construction will finish in time for the 40th anniversary of WDW?
One thing is for certain, you will never see another or a new Value Resort until they complete the Legendary Years. If they tried, that's the first question everyone would ask... Why start a foundation from scratch when you already have the basic infrastructure set to go with Pop!?
We stay at Pop! whenever we go to WDW for two reasons: We wake up at 7am, go right to the parks and return at 11p. We don't need anything more than a bed and a shower. Also, Pop! has direct bus service to... everywhere. I've seen the shrubs grow of the LY for years, but I'd be surprised if they were in fact going ahead with reconstruction efforts. That would show a fantastic amount of confidence on their end during this economy.

Didn't they start building Pop after 9/11? A lot of people said it would be a flop then because the economy was in the tank....but the economy rebounded and Pop is always busy now it seems.
The economy will rebound and I think if they do put in the long rumored suites over there that they will be done just in time to take full advantage of that! I will be there tomorrow, so I will have to check out what is happening over there.

Actually, it would show a fantastic amount of confidence in their ability to drag guests from North America (and around the world) to this destination in spite of the economy ... starting in 2 to 3 years when the construction would be complete..
And therefore.. really they're showing confidence in whatever the economy might be in 2 to 4 years.. and that's well agreed it would be well into recovery by that time.. so says most experts...

No.. Pop was under construction when 9-11 happened.. They had almost 100% completed the Classic Years and were starting on Legendary when the attacks occurred. Eventually they did open the classic years... but way behind schedule.. waiting for bookings to rise to the level where opening the resort made sense. And frankly, the first full year of operation.. there were buildings at Pop that never saw one guest.. they never opened the buildings.. because they simply didn't have enough bookings.
And don't forget (POR/POFQ) one of them stayed closed for 6 months following 9-11 ... waiting for the right conditions to reopen.

so, yeah.. about those people who were going down soon & would check into this. yeah. possible updates on how that went?
