So with the NFL 2009 season about to kick off I am officially starting a thread for sign ups. I will also be playing if enough people want to play. If enough people sign up I can set a date for a draft.

Hmm...I could be interested. What kind of league are you thinking?
For online systems I'm partial to the CBS Sportsline system, but that costs money. The ESPN system was OK, I think it was free.
Doc (who won the regular season 12-1 in his 2nd ever FFL season thanks to Adrian Peterson, and now gets to keep him as it has become a keeper league :) )

I was planning on using espn, Disney owned :) plus they do the best job on it and it is free which is a plus. We need to have atleast 4 teams which including me we have. In one league we can have up to 20 teams on ESPN's fantasy league. I have a buddy that will join if we have an odd number of people that want to play.
These are people that are signed up so far. Please send me your email addy so I can send information about the league when It is set up:

These are the extra people that have signed up if we get enough to start another league we will. I am not sure what to do right now I really didnt think that we would get 12 people signed up for 1 league. These people are alternates right now until I figure out what to do.

20 teams is tough - too diluted. 10 teams is nice...you have to at least think about who you are playing, how to handle your backups. Only 4 and you pretty much have all tier 1 and 2 players filling your roster and there is little strategy.
You can count me in, although if it gets too crowded I don't mind sitting out.
On ESPN I already have a login - doconeill1, so I don't know if you need my address. PM me if you do.
Can we get any sort of official stamp of approval from Pete, so we can make it the First Official DISboards Fantasy Football League?
Sir-Mickey

I was figuring on 10 teams myself. I agree that 20 teams is a bit much I'm gonna put a limit to the first 12 people to sign up have a slot. There are 5 people signed up right now including myself. As soon as we are either full or it seems like we are not gonna get anymore players we will set a draft date. I will keep u posted on new information as it arrives :)

please keep it 12 teams. if there is a demand, we can always start another league. this is a live draft right?
i say if we go with 12 teams, we have 6 playoff teams. the teams which fail to make the playoffs cannot play next year in the 2nd annual DIS league, thus opening 6 spots!

i have been playing this seriously for the last 10+ years. i am free to set up a couple of leagues if the poster who posted this thread wants me to. if not, i'm here for any advice on the scoring system i use. it's based from the NFFL which is a live draft held in orlando, chicago, san fran & chicago with a grand prize of 100,000. very solid scoring system IMO. we have enough now for a 12 team league & a good start for a 2nd league

I agree that we have enough for two leagues. I was waiting to do anything because I really didnt expect the response I got from you guys. We will leave sign-ups open for another day or two and see if we get some more then I will pull names out of hat to decide who is in which league.

If necessary, we could split into two leagues. I could probably commish a second league, and just randomly divide people between them.
Probably the biggest problem going forward is setting a draft date for a live draft. You REALLY want everyone to be available. I think ESPN allows for an automatic draft system, but it was pretty simplistic, where you could end up with 10 running backs and no quarterbacks.

I play in fanball and although it cost 9.95 for two teams, its a great system. We can then email draft and are not forced to do a live draft. www.fanball.com and go to Football at the top, then draft and play, then scroll down to Real Leagues NFL. I've been playing on this site for at least 7-8 years.

did not have time to read the responses but I played in the Rotohog.com Fantasy league last year. Its designed in a way that you really don't have to be present on draft day to get players. its like the espn one but the cost of the players are dictated by their movement meaning that if they are being bought you can see a price of a player go from $60 rotohog dollars to $70 or if being released by alot of players you will see the price decrease. I have nothing but good things to say about that sight..I really enjoyed playing last year. I will definitely do again this year and would gladly help out in trying to get it organized. I highly recommend the ROTOHOG site. Free and chance to win prizes. Even the PODCAST CREW could sign up. It would definitely be fun.....I know WILL would be interested. I enjoyed that one more that the Espn one that I also do regularly. I am definitely in.

Look into rotohog.com. the leagues you can setup there are endless. if we get the type of response that would demand it. It is probably something we can even do in addition to the Fantasy League. Its fun, and you have pick of anyone. does not matter if I have Brady and you have Brady. its all determined by who has the most combined points at the end of the season to determine the winner. Let me know and I will glady help out.

Anyone do a count of how many we have here? I think we should cap it at 12 or at most 14 per league, and free is a good way to go. We should sign up both (all?) leagues on the same website so we can check out all the leagues and see how people are doing!

Okay, I'm willing to take the lead if anyone wants in. Its 9.95 for two teams (in seperate leagues) but I think it worth it. Goto Fanball and check it out. Its Football, draft and play, real leagues. Please PM me if you want in and I'll send the league name and password to the first 14 to respond. The draft will be via email so its super easy to keep up and we don't have to get 14 people together at once. PM me if your interested, as soon as I get enough I'll get it going.

ESPN is free, and I believe it also allows you to pre-specify a draft order. However, those things often don't work very well, unless you can prioritize by position and what round you want that position filled.
Sir-Mickey started this up, so I'd like him to take the lead on how to proceed. Not that you couldn't set up a "competing" league. :)
If it were me, I would be thinking two (or more) leagues using the ESPN system and default rules. First season everyone gets doled to a league randomly. After the first season, we can think about divisions, rule changes, etc.

Well seems like there are plenty of people interested to put together several leagues. Feel free to join any you choose. I plan to use fanball as its not a league that autodrafts for you based on priorities. You actually draft via email and you get an email when your up, etc..
anyone interested PM and we'l get it going.

I haven't see anything from Sir Mickey is a couple days. I did a rough count of 26 people this morning, which would be a 14- and a 12-team league, or two 13s, not counting my own counting errors, or if others have decided not to participate.
I also thought about maybe trying to do it as a "pro" and "rookie" league. People would have to honestly rate themselves. I'm only going in to my third year myself.
If we don't hear from Sir Mickey soon, I'll see about getting the ball rolling.

That's 29 total. This could be three leagues. I _think_ the ESPN system allows someone to be a commissioner without having a team - not sure, so myself or Sir-Mickey could commish them all, but the hardest part is organizing the draft, so there should be at least one team owner from each league to at least act as Vice Commish.
We also need to decide how to organize - do we want a Pro/Amateur/Rookie setup, or just random?
To confirm you want in, PM me with your email address, your experience level (perhaps both in years and your own estimate of Pro/Am/Rookie), and preference for skill or random-choice leagues. Please do so ASAP - let's say a 5PM Eastern Monday cutoff?
If you aren't on the list but still interested, you can PM me and be put on a provisional list if we need to fill in some spots.
We'll need an "official" name for the leagues as well. I'm hesitant to use DIS or DISboards without some at least nod from Pete...I suppose I could PM him to check. "DISboards FFL" is pretty simple, with perhaps "-A", "-B" etc. to distinguish them.
Live drafts are preferable, but they only work well when everyone can be on at the same time. I distrust the "autopick" lists. We could do it by email (I can set up some lists), or even do it via the DISboards (although they is likely to be a lot of kibitzing :) ) if that seems preferable, but that can take a long time too. Even live, it can take several hours. If we go the email route, we'd need to get started ASAP.
For those with questions on the specific rules, I'd expect that we would use an ESPN Custom League as found here (http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/content?page=fflrulesindex2008). Although it is a custom league, the default "Standard" scoring rules would be in use.
As for my preferences, I'd also stay out of dividing a league into "divisions", as they are pretty arbitrary - just one division with all the teams in it. With a 10-team league, the top 4 would compete in the playoffs - I dislike having byes, and 8 teams is a lot. We can customize how the playoffs are done though. ESPN Standard if I remember correctly is 4 teams, last 4 weeks of the season with two weeks per playoff matchup (everyone else still plays for pride though).
If we end up with two 12 or 14 team leagues, we could perhaps do 8-teams, 1 week per match.
Also, if there is interest from our true rookies, I could perhaps write up a brief description of the concept and strategies...

In the meantime, for those that are confirmed, what works best for a draft? Live is best, but it requires everyone commit to a time and day, which could be problematic in our situation. I am mostly open, but I am on-call at work through next Tuesday, which means there is a chance I could have to disappear for a bit...and on ESPN's live system you've got a clock, and I don't think ESPNs auto-selection is the best, but its free at least.
Do we want to try it via email? I can set up a mailing list easily enough, but people need to commit to making choices as soon as possible at least, at least a few per day. There are 16 rounds to get through.

I could commit to a live draft pretty much any time except for this saturday or sunday, as long as I have a few days advance notice. If that's the best time for people, I'll set my lists and take my chances. If we want to do an email draft, I can commit to as many picks per day as others can keep up with, but we'd have to get that going ASAP.

I would prefer a live draft, but I will do whatever the group decides. I know a live draft would take a little longer but I think in the long run it would be easier. If for some reason you had to leave during the live draft you can just let the auto-draft pick for your team. ESPN's auto-draft is pretty good and fair.
Thanks

I wouldn't expect to be doing it during a work day. Even though my boss runs our work league, I think he'd rather I be working on things that the company deems important, not me... :) Besides, too many interruptions.
If it was live, it would probably have to be late evening or the weekend to get the most people - I'm not sure how many left coasters are on the list. I know three of us are from MA...

well i would still like to join but i think that the times that you would want us online would not work for me (hey we all need our beauty sleep....some of us more than others)as it would be from 12.30 am onwards here in the uk.if you do a game that means i could send my teams with email then please count me in but dont make it hard for others by including me in.

I prefer an online draft at night during ET, however I think the best may just be an autodraft. Everyone is at the same disadvantage going into the draft.

I still can't decide, and I haven't heard from Sir-Mickey yet either. I believe I can still add/delete teams up until draft time though. Need to get the ball rolling.
I don't care for most auto-pick systems - too likely to get a team with all RB reserves...
So far, it seems like we've got at least 5 people on the east coast, which makes a live draft more possible.
If I threw out a possible time - say, 1pm ET on Sunday the 30th, could people reasonably commit to it?
Alternately, if we did it by email, which we need to do ASAP, what would be reasonable? Could everyone commit to at least 4 picks during the course of a day? Those picks could happen throughout the day, but there would need to be some sort of limit, but I'm not sure how to make it fair. Say there is a 9pm ET cutoff, after which it goes into "rapid" mode - person who was most recently on the clock gets an auto-pick, and anyone who can continues picking with a 10 minute clock, auto-picks taking over for anyone who misses the clock? We've got about a week and half, so I suppose we don't need to force it just yet, and a live or autodraft could still be used if it just isn't working.
Actually, I'm liking that more. We can do the email, but if we can't complete it by a certain date (say, a week from Thursday) a live draft becomes necessary and if anyone can't make it they will need to trust the autodraft system.
Seem reasonable?

I'll be in Disney from Saturday through next Friday, which would make an email draft somewhat problematic, but depending on how we do it, I could send picks from my phone.

I, too, will be at Disney on the 30th so I am not available for a live draft that day. But I will take my chances with the auto pick if I'm not available. I am in the Eastern time zone.
An e-mail draft is fine with me too. Basically, I am up for whatever is best for the group.
Thanks for setting this up!

It's always something...what, are you guys Disney fans or someth...oh...wait... :)
If we do email, I can have it set up and we can start tomorrow. Then perhaps at least most of the starting rosters will be filled for you need to take off. ESPN doesn't have a mobile interface to their draft that I can see, but if you wanted to do it via email by phone, that's up to you. I could probably send to you separately with a rundown of picks taken, so you only need to receive/send one message (and perhaps a confirmation from me) per round if it really came to that.
I'm practically always connected (and since I'm on call for the next week, trapped).
Everyone can provide me their auto-pick list, or I can default to the ESPN Top 200.

I'd say go ahead and do the email draft and start it asap. If you've ever been a commishioner before, you know that there's no way to please all the people all the time, but I would think an email draft started asap would be the fairest to the largest number of people. But as I've said, I'll adapt to any format.
BTW, is there a site to log onto yet?

I think I am going to go ahead and set up the list. Unfortunately I have no heard from Sir-Mickey, but with everyone who has confirmed we have 10 teams, and we really need to get this going.
I will set up the mailing list tonight as well as the league, and email details. I have an idea on setting the draft order as well - I will assign a number to each person, and I will PM that to someone. I will then have another person (perhaps you BostonRob) pick numbers 1-10 in random order, and I will announce the draft order on the email list. The person who I PM'd the assigned numbers to can confirm (so I don't do anything shady) the order.
And just to be up front - I don't personally know any of you beyond seeing you on the boards here, so there will be no collusion in the draft order. :)
Give me a bit, and everyone should be receiving emails from me shortly.
I also never heard from Pete, so I'm just going to call the league the "DISfan Fantasy Football League" for now.

Edit: Got a fast response, so the league at this point is closed.
Due to a miscount on my part, we've got one slot left open for a 12 team league. If anyone is still interested, please PM me your email address ASAP. We are looking to start an email-based draft ASAP.

Been bizzy with trying to paint, refinish hardwood floors, etc for the past couple of weeks before the movers come so haven't been on the boards much and missed this thread. Too bad - I would have loved to be a rookie FFL player :rotfl: Have a great time with it and good luck all! :goodvibes
cheers,

For those that didn't get to participate in this league, we are now forming a second league! See this thread for details (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1933833).
