The main factor regarding the amoebas is the water temperature. I believe both Pete & Walter mentioned that once the lake water was above 80 degrees (F), the amoebas become active. So, if the triathalon is held in the cooler months of the year, it may mitigate that risk to some degree. The alligators though, well, I'm just thinking they must have spotters.

I have to say I am disappointed and offended that anyone would suggest beating a poor, dead horse. :sad2:
(not) ;)

They wear nose plugs.
The amoebas are most heavily concentrated in the shallow water where it gets warmest.
The horse is dead.

The amoeba actually live in the sand/mud and not the water. When you splash at the edge, you are stirring up the mud with the water and then create the safety hazard. We triathletes really try to get as far away from shore as quickly as we can. It being a race and all ;).
Also in more random info - Disney Sports is no longer organizing the Triathlon. They have replaced it with a Tri managed by another management company and allow it to take place on property. The end result is no more Disney medals, and an outrageously high entry free. :sad1: No more Disney Tris for me.

Dont the alligators give the swimmers an advantage? I mean if I had to swim with the gators I'd be swimmin real fast. The gators would make the faster swimmers faster and the slower swimmers lunch.:rotfl2:

I believe Darwin would call this survival of the fittest…or fastest. I call it thinning the herd. :rotfl:

That's what they always say about people in the wild with bears. You only have to be faster than the slowest person. ;)

:scared: Aren't there poisonous snakes and gators in that lake???? That would surely make me swim faster. ;) From your signature, I see you were smart and stayed on "dry land" for your Disney races.

Kevin,
I didn't know they made nose plugs small enough for the amoebas!
