A few months back I was getting very depressed because of the condition I was in. I had gotten to the largest I had ever been in my life and my knees were suffering tremendously because of it. I read water meters for a living and I needed to lose this extra baggage because going to work every morning was becoming more and more difficult.

This past July 4th became "MY" new Independence Day. My DD17 asked me to take her to our local community center www.riverwinds.org so she could get her morning workout in. That morning, I decided to join her, and the look on her face as I got out of the car was priceless. She was smiling from ear to ear, because she didn't have to go in and workout alone. That was a little over 4 weeks ago, since that first morning of working out, I have only missed going to the gym two days. As of my weigh-in this past Friday morning I have lost 9 pounds.

I am able to get in a 45-50 minute workout in each weekday morning, and about a 90 minute workout in on the weekend mornings. My goal is to lose 50 pounds, and this time, keep it off.

Right now, I am using the treadmill, bike and elliptical machines each morning, and feeling the best I have felt in years, and I am feeling so proud of myself for sticking to it!!!

Hi Verandah Man,
It is so good to see you here.Great job so far.Keep it up.That is great your DD lets you work out with her-mine is 16 and I would love it if she ran with me but at this point this old lady may just blow her away and she's afraid- ;)

All kidding aside you will find people here very motivating and inspiring.

I loved your info of the cruise boards when we went in 2005.

Hi Linda--DD and I were doing side by side elliptical training this morning for a short while. DD is on the elliptical for 40 minutes, my limit is 10 minutes.....

But then again, I also do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 10-15 minutes on the bike. I like to spread out my workouts by using a few different machines.

Just got home from my workout. Even with a few bad food choices this week, I did manage to lose 1/2 pound. This is good considering I was up a few pounds this past Tuesday. I went and did a second workout last evening after dinner(80 minutes) and just did a 50 minute workout this morning with my DD. I look at it this way, a loss for the week, is still better than a gain!!!!! :goodvibes

Gotta get ready for work now..:wave2:

Just arrived home from my morning workout and weekly weigh-in. This week I lost 1.5 pounds bringing my total weight loss to 11 pounds in the past 6 weeks!!! :goodvibes

Oh yeah, my work shorts are beginning to get very loose on me, I hope I don't loose them as I am walking around reading those nasty water meters :rotfl: speaking of which, I have to get ready for work now.....:wave2:

Really had a bad start this morning. Arrived at Riverwinds at 6:05am and first did 100 tummy crunches, then went on the treadmill and after about 3 minutes I had had enough. I was going to head home but decided to give the bike a try. I set the bike timer for 30 minutes, after 10 minutes, I called it quits. Went to the ellipitcal machine and thought I'd give that a 5 minute try. The minimum timer on the elliptical is 10 minutes, so I set the timer and started. I managed to get all 10 minutes in on the elliptical. By the time I got off the elliptical I started feeling like my old self and decided to give the treadmill another try. I set the timer at 15 minutes then kept increasing the time until I finally got it up to 60 minutes. All in all, I burned off 775 calories this morning, which was a whole lot more than I thought I was going to do after the first 10 minutes.

I know what the problem was. I stayed up until midnight to see the Michael Phelps/Mark Spitz interview on TV. I was so pumped up after watching win the 100 Butterfly that I had some trouble falling asleep so I took one of my Herbalife Sleep Now tablets. That's why I had such a hard time getting motivated and moving this morning. I was kind of still in a fog the first hour at Riverwinds this morning, I'm just glad I stuck it out and didn't come home at 6:15 like I almost did.

I'm now back home eating a nice tossed salad with fat free dressing!!!

Congrats to you, Verandah Man, for doing so well on your fitness journey. You're a neighbor of sorts, we live in Pennsauken. Keep up the good work!

The past week I averaged 600 calorie burn-offs each weekday morning and 1225 burn-off this morning, even with these workouts I failed to lose any pounds, mainly because of poor food choices this week. I did however lose some inches because I was able to move my belt up to the last hole, so I will take that as a positive result for the week!!! :goodvibes

Since I missed my workouts on Monday and Tuesday of this week(medical reason), I put in some extra time this morning. Spent 2.5 hours at the gym, my calorie burn-off this morning was 1500 calories and I also added in 120 tummy crunches. I was delighted to see the scale report that I lost another 2 pounds this week, bringing my total weight loss, on this my three month anniversary since starting my weight loss program, to 20 pounds. :goodvibes

Arrived home a little bit ago. Had a great workout, spent two hours on the treadmill, 10 mintues on the bike, and 100 tummy crunches. I'm getting a little more emotional with each weigh-in now. I started choking up as I was walking out of Riverwinds this morning. I am now over 1/2 way to my goal, as of this morning I have lost 26 pounds!!! :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

I took off today so I could get my yearly bloodwork done for my doc who I see on November 4th. I'm hoping he either reduces my bloodpressure medicine, or takes me off it all together when I see him on the 4th. November 4th will also be the 4 month anniversary since I started doing my workouts and watching what I am eating. My energy level is going through the roof!!! :thumbsup2

OK, this is a progress photo report. The first pic is of me with my DW and DD at DD's high school graduation this past June 17th. This pic was taken a few weeks before I started my exercise program on July 4th. My weight was 227 at this point.

This next pic was taken last night at my Godparents 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration. This is my DW and I, with my Godparents just before the party ended last night. I am now 28 pounds lighter at 199(as of yesterday morning). The first time I have been under 200 in a long time.

OK, arrived home from the doc a few minutes ago, he was quite pleased with the weight loss and wants to see me again in six months, then we will discuss reducing, or removing the BP med, as long as I can get some more weight off. I told him I hope to be at my goal weight by the next time I see him......I was also happy to see that the gym scale and the doc's scale were in agreement today......:goodvibes

Had an extremely stressful week and missed 3 workout days this past week. Even with eating some of my comfort foods, I still was able to stay the same weight as my last weigh-in, which made me quite happy as I thought I was going to put a pound or two back on. It did help that I had a 1650 calorie burn-off this morning. I was on the treadmill for 2 hours and 10 minutes non-stop. Also did 200 abdomin crunches and 200 low back extensions.

Time for bed now......:wave2:

Hey Andy, what food plan did you follow/use?

Not too much of a food plan Sue. I do have a Slim Fast shake for breakfast and lunch, then try to have a sensible dinner. I also knocked out "most" but not "all" of the sweets I used to eat. I do have a bowl of oatmeal almost everyday as a mid morning snack, then a few pretzels in the afternoon. I either have a piece of fruit or maybe a yogurt in the evening. That's about it.

Nothing to report this week I'm afraid. I have been sick  in bed since around noon on Christmas Eve, bad head and chest cold. Did manage to get myself to work yesterday for a few hours so I didn't lose the holiday pay on Thursday. Been doing a lot of sleeping and just plain old relaxing. Haven't been to the gym since Wednesday morning. Hopefully will get back into the swing of things by Monday.

Oh Boy, I'm Pooped Out!!! But it felt good getting back to Riverwinds this morning(I came down with the flu Christmas Eve). I packed on a few pounds (4 to be exact--too many Christmas goodies) over the past 10 days, now to get those pounds and more off!!!

Did manage a nice two hour workout this morning, 90 minutes on the treadmill, the rest of the time on the weight machines. Now, it's time to relax a bit and catch my breath (the flu took a lot out of me.)

My DW isn't a happy camper, I passed on the flu  to her, (my bad) she came down with it New Year's Eve. Now I get to go food shopping today.........

Way to go, Andy! You inspired me to start last week. I pulled a muscle yesterday - unrelated to exercise- in my thigh. Going to have to take it slow! Anyway! You are more dedicated than me! I would not have braved that kind of cold! I'm just not that dedicated......yet!

My DW and I arrived home from Walmart a little bit ago. I tried on a pair of size 34 jeans and they fit real nice, so I bought myself two pair of jeans.

Back in July when I started my exercise program I could hardly button my size 38 jeans and was considering buying size 40 jeans. I'm glad I started the exercise program when I did!!! :)

Thanks Linda, I am very proud of myself, as is my DW and DD18 of me. Last Sunday when my DW and I got home from Walmart, I put on a pair of the new size 34 jeans I bought and when my DD saw me in them she started to cry, she was so happy for me, you can't imagine how that made me feel. :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

My DW finds out about the cruise on Valentine's Day as I just booked it a month ago, she has no idea, this is going to be a surprise. Luckily for me, she doesn't DIS......:lmao:

 Hi Bip, long time no talk......yes indeed, I have been working quite hard these past 7 months to get myself in better shape and healthier. I want to be around a long time, the way I was going, that would not have been possible. I feel so much better about myself now, it just took some extra determination to get myself going and staying on the right track. I found the key for me was exercising, something I hadn't really done since my high school days.

I think what really got me going was watching The Biggest Loser on TV, those people inspired me to get off my bottom and do something for myself.

Thanks Again for the kind words........:goodvibes

The past few weeks have been up and down for me physically, that's why I haven't posted any updates. Had to get a cortisone shot in my foot the other week, then the arthritis in my right knee started acting up because of all the cold, damp weather we have been having.

I did manage to lose another pound this past week(got to exercise a little more this week), bringing my total weight loss to 41 pounds to date!!!

It's a good thing I have getting some of this weight off. I went to see my orthopedic surgeon yesterday after work, he told me that the inner side of my right knee is nearly bone on bone and suggested that I have a partial knee replacement within the next few months. The doc did give me a cortisone injection in the3 knee joint to help ease the pain, he also said it was up to me as to when I would like to schedule the surgery. I had a partial knee replacement to my left knee in March 2001, so I know what I am in for. :rolleyes1

This will be my 8th knee operation since I was 16 years old and the 4th surgery to my right knee.

I didn't do as bad as I thought I was going to do during vacation. I did put 4 pounds back on, but I am working to get those pounds back off. I will have to work on more weight ,and less treadmill, for the near future.

So sorry to hear about your knee.I am sure the weight will fall off you have been doing so well.As for me I am a yoyo!
Could you tell me what you have been doing? I have been eating under 1200 cals. and excercising like crazy and the scale just goes up and down.I also limit my sodium intake.I do not add salt and watch the food content. What do you do?

TIA,

Hi Linda,

Mainly just exercising, some weight training and treadmill time, plus trying real hard to watch what I eat, such as cutting out the sweets and salty foods.

It's been a tough week for me though as I only got to the gym on Monday. In fact, I am home today strapped to an infra-red heating pad to ease my knee pain.
