Can anyone tell me about Akershus Royal Banquet Hall? I am interested in it for the uniqueness of the food, not the character dining. It appears to have a Norwegian style salad buffet at both lunch and supper. Is there a difference between lunch and supper offerings? Is this included with the purchase of an entree? I will be using the DDP. Also are the entrees and desserts Norwegian or just the salad buffet? TIA

We took dd's last Dec for lunch.
You choose an entree from the menu and also visit the salad bar. We thought they had unique foods at the salad bar but also some "normal" food.
I wasn't too sure that I'd like the food but everyone really, really enjoyed it. We decided to do it again on our next trip.
here's the menu for lunch: http://allears.net/menu/menu_norl.htm
here's the menu for dinner: http://allears.net/menu/menu_nor.htm
I hope this helps.:)

We have eaten at Akershus a number of times in the past few years. They got a new chef last January and frankly I don't like the changes he made. It was significantly AMericanized especially the buffet. Previously, the buffet had numerous fish dishes, Norwegian meats and cheeses (with some American mixed in), a few styles of Norwegian breads and crackers, interesting salads, etc. On our last visit the buffet had cubes of cheese that were all not unique in America (cheddar, swiss, gouda), cold cuts were turkey, ham, pepperoni, salads were things like a basic pasta salad with Ital dressing, fruit salad, shrimp salad with mayo, 1 smoked fish (salmon) and one creamed herring. There were no breads or crackers anymore just the standard WDW rolls on the table with a sweet butter (made no sense to eat with fish dishes). The dessert platter is now all poorly made American stuff like cheesecake and birthday type cake with the only remaining Norwegain dessert is rice cream. The kjottkaker dish was still unique and good and I think they still have a lamb stew from the old menu as well. Before I always urged people to go even adults with no kids because it is a nice looking place as well as good food. Now I felt like it was a total kiddie cattle call with the wave of seating they do now. I do have kids and of course don't mind kids but it just wasn't the same nice dining experience it was for all the years before where yes, it was kid focused but still felt like a nice time. I think the CS Norwegian food is MUCH better now.

DH and I had lunch there last year as DH wanted to try the food (we did not go for the princesses). We were less than impressed. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't anything that stuck out either. DH had some kind of braised lamb which he didn't care for; I had the traditional dish which was like a meatloaf and it was very bland.

This is one place that we have always avoided for lunch and dinner simply because the menu has lacked appeal for us.

You know I think Disney thought they had to do that to keep enough people coming (Americanizing the menu). I know reading a lot of posts about the restaurant, there seems to still be many people who are not interested in or would hesitate in going if the food is too different.
We went in June and all had the kjottkaker (ours wasn't bland at all). All of us said it was the best meal we had other than Le Cellier. When we were there the restaurant was full, but it was not a zoo like it is at some character meals. I have a DD6 so she loved the princesses and after such an enjoyable meal, we will go back next year!

Thank-you. This is what I needed to know. I was really excited about going if it was authentic Norwegian. I would have been upset to find out that I had passed on eating at another restaurant only to find this out to late. I'll check out Kringla Bakeri og Cafe for either CS or a snack. By the way, just what is school bread?

We went for the charcaters, and they were great. But can't say we'll ever go back. We just were not into that kind of food. So, you will proabably love it as your main attraction is the food, not the charcaters.

I took my 7 yr in 06 for the dining and eye candy :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1. I hate to hear that they changed the menu. I had the ribs and they were good. I really liked the salad and cheese bar. Guess I want be going back.
