Anyone rented car from National at Dolphin?

On our last day at WDW we are planning to rent a car and drive to Cocoa Beach and then back to the Orlando airport. We will be at the Beach Club and thought it would be convenient just to walk over to the Dolphin and rent a car at their National desk. Has anyone done this? Are the cars right there or do they shuttle you somewhere to get them? Would it be easier to stay at the Beach Club and have the shuttle pick us up and take us to WDW Car Care Center to rent a car? Any help if you've had any experience renting a car while on site at WDW would be helpful. Tiffany is picking us up at the airport and taking us to WDW when we arrive and since we will be there for 9 days I don't want to rent a car the whole time especially with car rental being so high this year.

They have a desk there, but no longer keep cars on site there. You'll be taken over to the Care Care Center (near the TTC) to get the car. If it's slow, you might be able to do the paperwork there and then they will bring the car to you, but you'd still have to wait for it.

Do you know if you can still RETURN the rental car at the Dolphin? I am hoping we can avoid returning the car at the car care center.

No, you can't return a car to the Dolphin. (We were told the construction/expansion was the reason that cars were no longer kept there). You will be directed to the Car Care Center (near the MK). National has a complimentary shuttle that will take you back to your resort. It's the same shuttle that picks you up at the Dolphin and takes you to the CCC to get your car if you do the paperwork at the Dolphin's desk.
