Hi Guys,
I have just received a phone call from my Grandad-his Sister has slipped into a coma(she has been having treatment for cancer+unfortunatley it has gone to the brain). He needs a flight ASAP to Knock-Ireland from Gatwick. He has no clue on how to do this-has no Internet.I also have no idea on where to start to help him get a flight over the net.PLEASE can someone point me in the right direction on what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!(he only went last month-but it was all arranged for him from his family in Ireland-so we have no idea what to do+i have NEVER booked a flight before).Thank you so much.x.x.
INFO:- 2 adults, going from Gatwick to Knock.(he flew with EXCEL last month)
is there such a thing as an open ticket-as we don't know how long he could be there for(the hospital has given her 2-3 days at the most)>Or do they get a one way ticket+then book the flight home over there.I am lost,i could really do with trying to look or book something for them tonight.x.x.

Sorry to hear that Michelle.
I had a look at xl.com and they have flights leaving tomorrow at 5pm for £159 one way....you can book a return for approx £70-80 depending on your return date.
It is very straight forward to book a flight online you just enter the details on screen, name, address, credit card etc and normally they send a confirmation email which acts as your ticket...you print it out and take it to the check in desk with you.
I'll carry on looking to see if I can find anything else. Keep us updated if you book anything.

aerlingus.com have approx 12 flights tomorrow from heathrow to dublin returning in a week for around £200 per person.
I will have a look for the 2nd flight now.

Looking at the Sligo airport site there only seem to be 2 flights a day from Dublin.
http://www.sligoairport.com/flight_information/to_from_dublin.php
There is a phone number for reservations but they only keep office hours.
http://www.sligoairport.com/airport_services/reservations.php
Good luck with sorting things out.

Just found flights from Dublin to sligo for tomorrow, return is £90 per person.
You would have to book the later flight 5pm as you wouldn't get into dublin by 7am to catch the morning one.

There is a flight from gatwick to dublin tomorrow afternoon that departs 1.30 and lands at 2.45pm which allows you to have time to get the 5pm dublin to sligo flight above. It's £140 per person with www.ryanair.com - the website is a little slow.
you could also get a bus to sligo from dublin too about a 3 hour drive I think

Thank you Libby,Jackie+Claire,Rachel-once again for your updated links for me-2 of them would'nt work,
Grandad will be able to get a lift from Sligo airport when he gets there.
Claire,i have found from your info the Dublin to Sligo for 180euros-which i think is the best one, have written this down+all the times. It's the Heathrow to Dublin i am lost with.I don't know why his brother mentioned Heathrow+not Gatwick, but he was adamant it would be better for Grandad.I am not sure really what is best for Grandad-they will be getting the train to the airport.Nan+Grandad live near to Becontree station dagenham essex.I have since spoken to Grandad's other sister(this gets confusing as there are 11 siblings) who lives in Harrow+she is looking at the Heathrow to Dublin(she said Heathrow is cheaper than going from Gatwick) with BMI flight number BD127 leaving at 1-05pm-she said the price was £249 for her(dep tomorrow-returning 6th Aug),but when i looked it comes up £329 each for Nan+Grandad-i don't know what i am doing wrong. She is also looking at the Dublin to Sligo flight that you gave me+the prices are matching with hers on that.So sorry to confuse you.x.

I have found that bmi flight for £222 which plus tax is probably £249 the price your aunt has got. Are you looking on www.flybmi.com ?????
Here is the link i've found it on - it may not work directly though. http://book.flybmi.com/pl/bmi/wds/OverrideServlet
Let me know.
ETA: that link doesn't work but just go to www.flybmi.com and enter the dates - 30th july to 6th aug and it will list all the flights including the one your aunt's booked....at £222 plus taxes.
Pinky166
07-29-2008, 04:36 PM
To be honest Michelle if you are booking the dublin to slingo one i found then providing your nan & gdad get into dublin in time it doesn't matter if they go from heathrow or gatwick....I would go with the ryanair one i listed above as it's the cheapest and will get them to dublin in plenty of time.
Snowy-girls
07-29-2008, 04:39 PM
Yes i am looking on your first link+the second link did'nt work.
That £222-what is the box for underneath with the other amounts in??.I clicked on one of those boxes-that's probably where that larger figure came from??.It says on the same page that the prices inc taxes etc...???.x.
Pinky166
07-29-2008, 04:43 PM
The box underneath is for u to select the return flight - so if you go with the £47 return it brings the total at £269 pp.

Right i think i have worked it all out+wrote it down-i will give Grandad the choice of Heathrow or Gatwick as i have wrote both down, although the BMI one is slightly cheaper(heathrow to Dublin).
Then the Dublin to Sligo one is easy enough the 5-05pm departing.
Claire thank you so much  ,i bet you're wanting you're bed.I am, i have a major headache.Going to ring my Grandad now,to find out what is happening. Will update tomorrow.Wish me luck if i have to book this tonight  .x.

Claire-well what can i say- :flower3: THANK YOU SO MUCH,i hope you're not too tired this morning after staying up+helping me.x.
UPDATE..............
NOTHING was booked last night,i spoke to my Grandad about 11-45pm,and in amongst all of this hectic-ness(i don't even think that's a word, but it will do  )we totally forgot about my Nan's very important hospital scan on her liver,Friday morning.(my Nan has had problems since Jan+has only just gotten an appointment now :confused3 ),and as much as Grandad want's to go+see his Sister-he also does'nt want to cancel Nan's appointment. My Nan cannot be left on her own(which is mine+Grandad's decision-it's complicated),so he would'nt go to Ireland+leave her.All options have been considered on the phone last night+Nan won't even stay with me(she is very stubborn+set in her ways). So we are at a standstill.
I have been looking at flights again this morning, for Friday afternoon and Sat afternoon-but as i am sure you all know-who knows when my Aunt could pass.(my Sister who died of cancer this year in May-lasted nearly 4 months in the hospital, after they gave her only 3 days).
My Grandad is waiting on another updated phone call today. One of his main worries is that,he will get the phone call to say she has passed on,and he won't be able to make the funeral in time :sad1: .He says that funerals in Ireland are very, very quick compared to over here(normally within 2 days).
I will keep you all updated,if you wish me to do so-i don't mind  .
THANKS again everyone.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.

There's been a recent update/change of plan.

Only had time to look at Heathrow-Dublin, wish I had more time to help. Just on my way to do deliveries, banks, accountants and last minute shopping before our trip.
Don't know times of Dublin-Sligo so these might be wrong times.
Orbitz.com One way Saturday $217pp(£110) incl BMI. Doing it this way stay as long as they want, flights back to Heathrow work out cheaper eg Sat 9th $136pp(£67)
BMI rould trip on their own site £181 but you can view 14 days at a time some days are cheaper. Not seen anything like £307, where was that?
Would be easier if I had time to read the thread and get better idea of your situation but try Orbitz they have been doing good prices this year for me, better than direct with the airlines.
Good luck.

Thanks so much Wayne, will have a nosey now.
Wayne,if it's not to much trouble can you post the link to where you saw BMI-£181-i keep coming up with this £307 figure.x.
By the way there connecting flight Dublin-to Sligo leaves Dublin at 4-30pm-so they must be to Dublin with time to change to get that flight-as that's the last flight out of Dublin with them.x.

4-30am-yikes,i thought me being on the flight pages at 5-30am was early.
I cannot find the BMI for £181 he is mentioning-i have been trying ever since he posted+no luck-still only finding the really expensive one i found.
Since then i have found a cheaper flight from Gatwick-Dublin for £294 going Sat afternoon return for them both-(i think that was with aer lingus-i can't remember off hand,i have bits of paper+prices+flights+times everywhere)-which is cheaper than Heathrow to Dublin.x.

I've just had a look at orbitz.com which is where Wayne posted his flights from....but they all appear to be either depart at 6am which would mean your nan & grandad would land a t 7.30am and have to wait all day until the 5pm flight to Sligo or they don't land until 5pm which is no good....I also can't find the price Wayne quoted. The cheapest I found was $267 + $164 taxes = $431 per person.
I will have a look at a few others and get back to you in a minute.
Snowy-girls
07-30-2008, 08:06 AM
Thanks Claire,i know i was'nt all that specific with Wayne,i forgot to say that Nan+Grandad would only be able to manage an early afternoon flight because of having to go by train to the airport.
I know when they went recently to Gatwick airport it took them about 2-3 hours(mainly becuase of nan's knee-she had a dodgy knee replacement done in Brussels+then had it re-done here last year-but still not good).I would'nt know how long it would take them to get to Heathrow. So early morning flights are not good.x.
Also with orbitz-it's in $$ will i be charged even more money to use my debit card to convert to pounds-if i was to use them?.x.

The best I have found is: www.ryanair.com
Gatwick to Dublin - depart at 1.30pm land 2.45pm on Sat 2nd aug = £21.99+tax!!!!!!
Returning Sat 9th to gatwick (several times to choose from, I selected 2pm arriving at 3.20pm. Free return flight - only taxes to pay!
Unfortunately the booking part of their website is temporarily offline for maintenence so I can't tell you how much the taxes will be but it won't be too much!
I've got to go out for a while but will be back in a few hours so will check again for you. x

Claire,THANK YOU that sounds great,i looked and taxes worked out to be £53-26,and taxes on the free flight is £19-98.So total is £117.22:thumbsup2 .But that does'nt include the approx 150 euros for the Dublin to Sligo flight-how does Euro's work out??.
Also the connecting Dublin flight is at 4-30pm,how long do they have to be in the airport to check in etc..to make this flight. The Gatwick to Dublin i picked was 1-30pm-2.45pm arrive.Does that leave them long enough as i don't know how that works???.Or would they be better tring to make the earlier filght at?.x.
ETA-how do i go about insurance, they always go with either AA or RAC as they do a great deal for Nan-because of her age+her problems, knee replacement, mild heart attack, strokes etc..But if they go say within 24-48hours of receiveing that phone call, how do they get there insurance papers(last time they took 5 days to come thru the post).x.

The flights I saw earlier have now gone, Ebookers have lots of Aerlingus at £193 return all times of day(some cheaper but didn't see a good time), one gets into Dublin at 2:40pm on Sat 2nd Aug. return Sat 9th or Fri 8th a few £ more.
Flights constantly change, you can look 3 times a day and get 3 different results, Its just a matter of keep searching until the right ones are there for you.
Orbitz.com and Kayak.co.uk are the best 2 for you to keep looking at as they search multiple airlines, Travelsupermarket.com also but hey have not been as good recenty.
Back to packing now

No worries. :thumbsup2
I don't think you will get cheaper than the ryanair one's I found earlier, I have had another look but nothing close to that price.
150 euro's is approx £120 at todays exchange rate.
I would think the connecting flight times would be ok providing there is no delay....if they can make the earlier flight then it would be less of a rush for them and they would definately have enough time.
With the insurance just ring up whoever they want to use (aa or rac) and you can specify when you want the insurance to start from, so saturday....then all they need to get from them is the policy number and the emergency telephone number should anything happen and they need to use it. HTH. x

*****UPDATE*****
I have spoken not long ago to my Grandad, the plan is---(and i feel bad saying this because of everyone, especially poor Claire wanting to help me asap)---my Grandad is not going to go+see his Sister,he wants to remember her how she was at the beginning of June when he went over there for the big family reunion(which was organised because of her treatment not going to well). It is a difficult decision he has made(i know this as he helped me make the decision with my Sister)but he knows it's for the best+he also has my Nan to think about-which is understandable.

Thanks guys  .
It is a very hard decision to make, but one i also agree he has made right.
We still have'nt heard anything at the moment-so to us that means she is still hanging on in there.
Also i am fine-thank you for asking, what's hitting me the most is seeing my wonderful, dear Grandad choked up+upset,it is horrible to see someone you adore like this. It's still fresh to me with my half sister only recently dying from cancer as well-so my emotions are all over the place at the moment.x.
thinking of you all Michelle

******UPDATE*******
With regards to my Grandad-he phoned his Sister Rosie's hubby last night+Rosie has come out of the coma(which is fantastic news-which none of us can believe),but we have been told-well her hubby has been told by the Doctor's that the outcome is still not good, just because she has come out of the coma.x.
With regards to my Nan-the scan proved 'inconclusive' and she has to go back next Wednesday@10am for another.Because of the amount of tablets my Nan takes a day which most of them have to be with food+drink, they told her in the letter to carry on with her tablets+eat+drink as normal before the scan, but because the scan requires you to 'fast' for 6 hours beforehand, they believe this was why the scan proved inconclusive. So she must fast for 6 hours before next weeks appointment(and they have told her not to take her tablets-which we are worried about). She also had to have more blood tests to see if her Liver count has come down since the last one.I don't know if anyone knows but a normal liver count should be between 0-40,my Nan's is 317.
He explained it could mean a couple of things, fatty liver, all the tablets she is taking which can cause liver damage-this is what we are so worried about. My poor Grandad is even thinking cancer, which i was'nt thinking until he told me :sad2: .
I will keep you updated next week on my Nan+will post asap if we hear anything about my Grandad's Sister. Thanks again everyone-it really helps me to write on here  .x.

*************UPDATE********************
Well Nan had her appointment today+they managed to do the scan perfectly :thumbsup2 .BUT we now have to WAIT until the 9th September for the results :headache: :sad2: .As if she has'nt already waited long enough for all of this, especially if, God forbid there is something seriously wrong with her/her liver. So once again we are playing a waiting game-Nan admitted she was scared last night to my Grandad :sad1: on what they might find. All along she has played the 'tough guy' since January but Grandad said she showed her true self last night..x
Grandad's Sister Rosie is still 'hanging on'-i don't like that phrase but i don't know how else to word it :confused3 .She has even become strong enough to be wheeled around the hospital grounds in a wheelchair when her Husband+children visit :thumbsup2 .x.

Oh Michelle, sending   . On the positive side at least they were able to carry out the scan properly this time and I know it sounds a long time to wait until september but your Nan has been very brave and waited since January and that appointment will be here sooner than you think - the waiting is the hardest part - I know - so try to hang on in there - sending another

I should'nt really moan about how long she has to wait but i just can't help it.I am thankful for our NHS-i know some are not+think it's useless, but when you compare to other Countries-we are lucky.Let's hope she get's a good result from all of this :thumbsup2 .x.
