We have never been to DW. My husband thinks he wants to stay in a tent at the fort wilderness in October. Just wondering who else has done this or will I wish we had gotten a room?

Lots and lots of people do this every day. Is it for you? I don't know, but I know it isn't for me.
Another idea is to rent an already set up pop up or 5er. Here is the links.

First things first...have you ever tent camped? If so and if you enjoy
roughin' it, then you will have a wonderful time.
Speaking of roughin' it, it's not the same at the Fort as it is primitive
camping. You will have electricity, water, and a grill. Comfort stations are
located within walking distance and so are the bus stops.
Our preference is staying at the Fort but sometimes we will stay at a Disney
hotel but only on specific occasions. Mostly when we fly since we haven't
attempted the tenting and flying thingie.
Oh, and I see you want to go in October...that's our favorite time to tent
camp there!

Tent camping at Fort Wilderness is great!!! I've done it many times. Always had a great time!!! I have moved up to a camper, but if the situation were to warrant it, I would tent camp at WDW again!!

We've been tent camping at FW for 20 years - and we love it! :)
Some essentials that we would not go without: air mattress, fan, little tent heater (if going in the winter), sheets & blankets (instead of sleeping bags), screen tent (set up over picnic table), small refrigerator, coffee maker, crockpot.
We definitely make it "home-away-from-home".

This was my same dilemma when I started planning our current trip (we're going Oct 4 - 8). Tent camping vs/ hotel room. We're going for the tent. I've wanted to stay at FW since I first saw it as a kid, and this will be my first time. Several times I almost changed res to a value resort room, because of the "what if's"... what if it rains when we're setting up or breaking down? What if it's 95 degrees at night? etc... You just can't go with the what if's - anything could happen, even if you're in a hotel room.
As for us - we are tent campers - we enjoy camping, and I can't wait to camp at the fort. October should be pretty good temp wise, and we're coming prepared.
My two cents for you - will this be your first tent camping experience? Or do you know what you're getting into there? Since this is your first time to DW - if you're not accustomed to tent camping, it might not be the best way to go. But as for me - I can't wait! 68 days and counting!!! :woohoo:

Also, if you're going in October, you want to go ahead a book a reservation - I read here recently that someone else was trying to book in FW in October and there was nothing left available. :confused3

We tent camp and loved it. Since we only sleep in the hotels we spend our time at the parks, tent camping is fun, we're trying to book for October but no luck yet.

We just got back from FW & 1 night at the POP - this wsa our 1st experience & though it was HOT the fans kept us quite cool - in fact I turned 1 fan off 'cause I was cold in there. The first night was great. The 2nd night we came home around 1:30 am & found a MESS the tent was flooded.....we called the front desk & the brought us towels to mop it all up - the kids slept in the van with DH & 'cause it was supposed to rain the next day( & we didn't know why everything got so wet) dh asked DIS if they could find us a hotel for the last night - they did -put us up in POP.
Even after that mess I still would choose to go straight back to FW - hopefully we'd know what caused the flood - but if not it was so much more fun @ FW & quieter that we'd still chance it. Honestly we loved it that much more.

If you've been tent camping before, and enjoy it, I'd say go for it. :thumbsup2
We tent camped back in July '04, and made memories that we wouldn't trade for anything.
Would I do it again in July? Probably not. ;) But, I'd definitely do it again if I didn't have access to a camping trailer. :)
Oh, and Rhonda's list of musts are very good suggestions. ITA. :thumbsup2
