I was sooooo disappointed! I actually had two tickets to the race, but gave them away as a wedding gift. Glad I didn't go, I watched about half on tv and was just so bummed. Spent the Sunday afternoon working on my old hot rod with dad. Such a great time in Indy!

My brother-in-law was there and he had a great time, but mostly because he had fun listening to the drivers and crews talking about how screwed up things were. He's gone pretty much every year and he said this was the best one, but mostly because of the drama the tires caused.
I saw part of it on TV and I stopped watching. It was terrible on TV.
Saturday night I went to Beaver Dam for the local dirt races, they had 110 cars spread over 5 classes. The racing was awesome and we had a great time. Way better than the NASCAR race.
BTW, we come down every year for the 500, but spend every night at New Smyrna for the short track races. I enjoy that as much as the big track.

I still can't believe they didn't test the tires but it mad for good entertainment when DBF's father was yelling at the tv:laughing:

It was really disappointing - I hope it doesn't affect attendance for next year.
DH won a local radio contest for free tickets to the Kroger 200 Nationwide series the night before at O'Reilly Raceway Park, just down the street from us. the station said it included a meet and greet with some drivers. When he and DD got there, they discovered they were on the podium during driver intros, right next to the sponsor reps! They said most of the drivers were super-nice, especially to DD (she's 8, and was wearing a Danica Patrick shirt, which the drivers got a kick out of).
Here's a photo of them -- DD is the little blond girl in the back, and DH is the tall guy with the ear-to-ear grin shaking Mark Green's hand. http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z39/prose413/racephotosmall2.jpg

Very Cool Prose! Bet that was fun!!
I heard some talk today about the reason the track was so bad. Usually their are prior races at Indy before the 400, this helps build up the rubber on the track before the Sprint boys get to racing. This year there were no previous races, and having new cars, and a new tire, just made for a disaster. NASCAR does pretty good, and GOODYEAR to so I guess like the old sang goes, you can't win em' all!
Next year will be good, and I'm not discouraged in any way! :thumbsup2

I had to look up what you all were talking about, and I feel really bad for all you fans. One writer in Florida called it a "Gong Show on Wheels" (the reference is probably lost on you, Will, since you're such a youth...now it's your turn to have to Google something!)

Hee hee...Deb..drag...racing...you made a pun :jester:.
Will --they said it was VERY cool. The headlines in the Indy Star today are all about how NASCAR is admitting it was a poor combo of tire and car, no fault of the track. I am getting a whole bunch more photos soon from the promotions people, so if I get any more cool ones with famous racers, I'll post...

Here's the scoop Will,
There was nothing wrong with the track. It's just now sort of leaking out, but Goodyear produced a bad batch of tires that didn't allow any rubber to be laid down on to the track. The rubber was essentially turning to dust, hence people in the first few rows came away from the race covered in black dust (from the tires). I would venture to guess they didn't use enough bonding compound.
Back during the 1 test session they did in April, Dale Jr. was the driver and he indicated that there were some problems and Goodyear said it would be taken care of. Doh!!
There are no pre-races before the BY400, only practice and qualifying. The truck and Nationwide series races at Raceway Park, where that nice photo in this thread came from.
BTW, I'm just an all around racing nut, not just NASCAR.

Did Tony get up under the dolphins, get 'em loose and put 'em into the wall? :rotfl2:
:confused3 I am not a race person, but DH told me that Tony isn't known for being very nice on the track...
he seemed kind of stiff, I have seen famous people that have great relationships and can meet fans and make it very one on one, you could tell he wasn't comfortable, they had some fans come up and do the dolphin training moves in the splash zone with him and the fans had to aproach him to introduce them to him. Which just seemed odd to me...he didn't say "hi" or anything and they were right next to him...There was one dad who chased him down for a pic with his son and Tony stopped what he was doing and posed for it.
But the majority of the people were there for the dolphin show, not for him, there was a very small section reserved for his fan club...I didn't know who he was other than Nascar and that was only because I saw fans walking around in his shirts. :teacher:

Being from Indy, you either grow up racing, or loving people that race. Since I never had the opportunity to get behind the wheel I developed a passion far all cars and racing. I love anything that goes fast, I'm into the Indy cars, Drags, and even love them short tracks where the locals tear it up. I've always had fun cars but lately I've been able to keep them. Me and my dad have been working on a 1931 Model A for a couple years now. I'll post a few pics. I have a 1987 Fox body GT. She is a little rough around the edges, but if it was easy and cheap everyone would have one.

Good eye Lorax, its an 87 302 out of a Maverick rebuilt with some goodies in it. You really dont see a lot of Fords in these anymore. But its a Ford, so we thought it better have a Ford motor in it. I love love love the 302 motor. My favorite of all I think. I can get down with the old fastbacks.

Glad to hear you kept a Ford motor in it.
My dad keeps talking about getting an A to build. I'm all for going with a flathead :>
Either that or I was thinking of the obscure idea of getting a wrecked Mark 8 (since the are cheap) and pulling the DOHC 4.6 and making that work.
Or I'd really like to build a Factory Five Cobra, or i'd like to...
I have no shortage of ideas on what I'd like to do. Just a shortage of time and money.
So, what have you done with your 87?
I haven't gone wild with mine. Gears, intake, pulleys, converted to duals, lowered, koni's, frame connectors, all the typical odds and ends. I'd like to just ditch the carb and put in a roller motor with F.I..
The 66, is just a little off from stock. It was a basket case we picked up for $600. Put in floors, split the cowl, fixed the rust, painted it, put in a red and white pony interiour. GT trumpets through the valance (want to get the foglights for the grill) and a lo-po '75 302 with a 4bbl. It's a C4 automatic tho. But it does have factory AC!

I hear ya on no shortage of ideas. You know the game to well, time and money, and more time and money. Both look real nice man! You got a nice looking 4 eye there, and with T-Tops, better not get rid of that baby! My 87 just has the bolt on stuff, pulleys, headers, exhaust, 600hp clutch, wicked 8 ball shifter, nothing to crazy yet. I took all the emissions crap off to free up the motor a little. I'd like to park this thing and start from the ground up if you know what I mean.
The 66 is kind of like our 31, it was a mess when we got it. That's my dads 34 in the back.

Both those As are sweet. While yours is a basket case, it will be a fun project.

Its been fun over the years. This is definitely a passion I got from my father and will live in me for a long long time, hopefully forever. Some call me crazy cause I have 3 cars, but I say to each is own.
School> Actually I just graduated with my BA, and the 31 is a gift from my dad. Its always been mine, but he wouldn't let me take it until I finished school. Well that day has come and passed now, so I'll probably be bringing her down in Christmas, can't wait! :cool1:
I say keep the 4 eye, and buy another. Only reason I'd sell my fox is to buy another. 4 eyes are a keeper though, and looks to be in real good condition.

We have a '66 Mustang GT that DH's family has been the original owners of...he can't wait to start restoring it. Most of it is in pretty good condition, but it hasn't been driven for about five years (can you say "Money Pit"? LOL).

calypso, mustangs really aren't to bad to restore price wise. It all depends how much effort you can put in. Parts are very reasonably priced if you are going after reproduction parts. Sometimes the quality can be suspect, but there are a lot more that are good quality. Of course if you are going for a concourse show car you'll have far more invested than the cars value. But true GTs are worth more, especially if it's a K code.
My 66 I probably put 4k into it. But, we did the welding, body work & paint ourselves. The motor was in good condition and only needed a valve job (which we did too). But my dads a mechanic, so we have access to everytthong we needed.
I'd still say you can keep a driver restore under the price of a new car if you do as much as you can yourself.

I'll take pics and post them. While on the topic of restoration. I couldn't find a pic of mine so I found one close to it. This was my very first car which was 10 yrs old when I bought it. Mercedes 190sl with a hardtop & a convertable top. It was a stick so I had to borrow a friends VW to learn how to shift. Took myself to the racetrack and learned the right way. Beautiful & perfect not a ding on it. The leather had wear but that was it. Loved that car and drove it for a few years until it started eating me up mechanically. I sold it to a collector. That's my #1DS (turned 22 last week) His first race is on my birthday, OMG! Talk about trauma. I promised him if he finished college I would let him (pay for) professional driving school to get his SCCA license. He's been driving all different kinds of cars for a long time. It's an open wheel formula car. He placed 2nd in both of his races at the Poconos in July.Would've won but the winners car was tuned up they discovered later. We realize he won't win this one but hope he gets some good experience out of it. Hopefully, I'll take pics if I can get my head out of my sleeve long enough. Prayers & pixie dust welcome!
