It's my dad's 60th in July, and mum has booked him a steam train experience at the Great Central Railway in Loughbrough. We all want to meet up there and spend the weekend at a nice hotel nearby (can by a reasonable drive away). Mum wants a swimming pool, brothers will require a bar, and I just like a bit of luxury, Has to accomodate Katie too.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've been searching the web for hours and the best I've found is a Jarvis which has no pool but everything else looks good.

Hi Bev

We have stayed in the Stakis (I think it might be the Hilton now) at Leicester and it had just been refurbished and it was superb. They had a Leisure Centre (Living Well) on site, and I think a Kiddies Club. It wasn't too expensive either. This was the year before last.

Whilst there we visited the Steam Railway that went to Bosworth Field (where the last battle of the Roses was) and did the whole history bit, the train journey was good too. We also visited an unusual collection of Locks. They are called Foxton Locks and it is a series of 7 Locks on a canal that goes up/down hill. Quite interesting and a lovely walk.

I think the hotel was on Junction 21 of the M1 - I am not sure if that is too far from Loughborough.

OK, hotels in Loughborough - I asked a colleague at work who lives in Loughborough and he's suggested these:

Large hotel in the centre of Loughborough.

Small hotel right next to the Great Central Station

Another small hotel near the railway.

This hotel is in Rothley, a little way outside of Loughborough off the A6 - but very nice. There is actually a Great Central Railway station in Rothley. It's a very nice country house hotel.

The Quorn Country House Hotel is nice too - just off the A6 between Leicester and Loughborough.

Apart from the Great Central Railway Loughborough doesn't office much in the way of tourist attractions. If you like nice walks though you can head to the Charnwood Forest area which is quite close by:

The railway near Market Bosworth is called the Battlefield Line and starts at a place called Shackerston. (I used to play rugby for Market Bosworth :) ).

The actual battlefield is closer to the vilage of Sutton Cheney, but there isn't that much to see. But it is a nice walk on a sunny day :)

Let me know if you need anymore local info.

We stayed at the Hilton at East Midlands Airport (just up the M1 from Loughborough and closer than the Hilton at Leicester) last weekend whilst taking part in a two day competition at Loughborough Uni. We paid about 52.50 per person DBB (they do a nice dinner). Hotel has a nice leisure club (with fitness equip, pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room etc.).

We stayed there the second year in a row, so can't be bad.

Have also stayed in the "Quality Inn" at Loughborough (on-site restaurant, fitness room, pool I think, Harvester next door). That was okay - not as nice as the Hilton, but cheaper and closer to Loughborough. Have also stayed at the Burleigh Court Hotel (on the Loughborough Uni campus): okay, but would prefer the Hilton and Quality over this one.

I think we are going to go with the Hilton in Leicester, but the one at East Midlands sounds good too - but is it right at the airport? I don't know if I fancy staying at the airport?

My mum is back next week, so I'll talk it over with her and see what she fancies

The Hilton at East Midlands Airport is a mile or two away from the airport: you are not aware of the planes whilst you are at the airport. The East Midlands Airport Hilton is just off a large roundabout which intersects a number of main roads (I think that the Leicester Hilton is fairly similar - a lot of Hiltons don't have the most breathtaking locations... ;-)).

Saying that, I would guess that the Hilton at Leicester (I can't remember it too well) probably has more in its immediate vacinity (the East Midlands Hilton is pretty isolated).

Have a great trip.
