Does anyone know what the current "advice" is re: faxing the hotel requesting rooms. We're going to the GF for three weeks in 8 days and really wanted to ask for the biggest room possible - three weeks, four of use could be a nightmare. I almost wished we'd booked a larger room from the start but it all seemed to expensive!!!!! We also need a bed guard etc.
Can i also please check tips
Meals 15 - 20%
Porter who takes your bags up - $1 per bag?
How much for hire car man?
$2 per day housekeeping???
Have I missed anything?

You could ask if there any upgrades available upon checkin.as its going quiet with the downturn, you migh get it free or for a small fee.No harm in trying
Char hire man no tip required as far as i am aware

Faxing the room assigner is a big no-no these days, as far as I'm aware. The way to get your requests met is to make them known at the time of your reservation, to list them in order of priority, and to not get too greedy (i.e. don't make too many). In other words, put yourself in the shoes of the room assigner and think about what would and wouldn't encourage you to meet a customer's requests - they're only human, after all.
Assuming you didn't make your requests when you booked, I'd suggest phoning now and asking to have them added to your reservation. It's worth asking again at check-in, but bear in mind that the desk clerk can only give you what's available, so don't think of this as an alternative to phoning ahead - you stand more chance of getting what you want by making your requirements known in advance. As Paul says, you've got nothing to lose by asking what upgrades are available at check-in. If there's nothing going, or the price is too high, you're no worse off and at least you won't spend the entire three weeks wondering if you could have been staying in a better room.
I'd recommend taking a look at the information on AllEars so that you're aware of the different room types available before you make your requests.
Good luck! :thumbsup2
As far as tipping is concerned, you only need to tip the car hire man if he spends time showing you the controls, giving you directions, etc. I'm not sure how much would be considered appropriate, but I'm guessing a couple of dollars should do it. You do need to tip the valet at GF and, to be honest, it's a minefield. We end up tipping the guy who takes the car away, the guy who takes the luggage from the boot, the guy who delivers it to the room (and believe me, they're very wiley in making sure a different person attends to each), and the guy who collects the car every time we want to use it.

No only if the DW would tip me for doing all this:rotfl2:

Paulh - thanks for this, but I don't think I'm brave enough to ask.

Are you kidding!!!! I almost go into meltdown ringing for ADRs - besides wouldn't they actually only talk to my travel agent?

once when we were staying at boardwalk, at the dvc over christmas.o=the room we were assigned reaked of smoke, and was a non-somkeing room.
w when straight back to front desk.tyhere were no rooms available due to it being xmas.they offered us okw,but we wanted the ease to walk to and from epcot, close to MGM and use the monarail to get to MK from epcot.thsi was why we booked boardwalk for it as we didnt whant to drive on the busy days
After a while they said we can put you up in concierge. at the time i didnt know what concierge was, said as long as there was a fridge in room would be ok
They said they would provide a fridge,
well when i whent to room and found out what concierge was it was great
Upshot was if we had paid for it for the 11 nights over xmas and new year would have cost £5,000. we paid not a penny
If you have problems with room always stand your ground and pe polite, you might get something
If you shout and ball you would get nowt
Always ask,MIL always drives us mad when we all stay at pop, when she asks for a complamentry fride she usaly gets one
Dont worry about being shy theres no harm in asking

We stayed at AKL shortly after it opened. As it was just dh and me, I'd requested a king bed. When we stepped into the room we realised we'd actually been given one of the bunk rooms. We'd flown in that day, so we were very tired and we almost simply accepted it. However, not only did this room not fit with the romantic trip we'd envisioned, but I was aware from these boards that the bunk rooms were highly coveted by those with children and very difficult to get. It seemed crazy that we'd be depriving someone else when we didn't even want it.
We dragged ourselves back down to reception and explained our plight. The check-in CM told us there were no king rooms available. Again, I was all for letting it go, but from somewhere I found the courage to ask if there were any concierge kings available. My expectations were nil, so I was flabbergasted by her response. She could upgrade us for $20 a night! It was an absolute no-brainer so we bit off her hand. If we hadn't asked, we'd have got on with our trip just the same and it certainly wouldn't have been ruined, but this one simple question totally changed the complexion of our stay there. Not only did we get the king room we'd wanted, but we thoroughly enjoyed the concierge treatment.
Since then, I've never been shy about asking for upgrades. I don't expect to get anything for free, but I do like to make sure I've explored all the options.
