Had to be done eventually ... all buildings need more than routine maintenence once they reach a certain age. Especially those that host as much foot traffic as that ride.

Just so everyone is clear, this is official according to whom?

How is this going to effect my 2009 trip? :sad1:If official, and actually takes place, I would say no SM on your '09 trip. What is the 'official' source?

I am planning a Grand Gathering for October 2009. It will be my nephew's first trip. My DS's had me pull up Google 3D and show my nephew all the rides my DS's can't wait to take him on. I have already warned him that Space Mountain may not be open and it looks like it won't be open. He was disappointed, but I told him that was just a good excuse for us to have to go back together. Also, it looks like I planned our last day for our December 2008 trip the right way. I heard the rumors that it might be closed for refurb early 2009. For our last day, we plan on hitting the MK and riding Space Mountain as many times as we can get in before we have to leave to catch DME.

Will give you extra time in 2009 to enjoy other attrations, and hopefully restore my beloved Space mountain to its former glory for the trips after rehab!

Good, it really needs it. The most jarring ride of all WDW

Also, its down time has to be about 40%

I'm sorry that it will effect your trip though

Nothing at WDWMagic.com either. Or on Jim Hill.

I'll be glad to see this refurb happen, I rode SM for the 1st time last trip and I have to say I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life. Jarring about in the cart, not smooth at all.

My DBF is tall also and he found he didn't fit too well in the seats, said he'd miss this one next trip, but maybe with a refurb he'd try it again, depending on the size of the cart!

I'm sorry for the people who'll miss it in 2009, but I'll be looking forward to riding the new version again in 2010! :thumbsup2

But it might be helpful if you were to tell us the SOURCE from which you just received it.

It's also not listed on the Cast Hub. :confused3

Let's hope you don't feel like you'll hit your hands off of the track above when you ride... or in your DBF's case, his head:lmao:

Has anyone ever watched a POV of SMM2 on YouTube? I hope they bring it to WDW :yay:

Allen Weiss mentioned it (possibly by accident) during an interview today. The WDW boards are all taking about it.

I see nothing in the discussion boards on WDWMagic, Micechat, Laughingplace, or even the Rumors and News board on this site about such an interview. To which boards are you refering?

Wow ... that's weird. The only posts I can find anywhere on any WDW boards that include Al Weiss talking about Space Mountain rehab in 2008 are posts dated 2007 and are discussing it as a rumor.

Very confused now.

I really hope it does come down though, even if they just fix the queue, its just so bad I find it depressing.

Okay. I have nothing but the highest respect for Martin and his information is usually pretty accurate. But he is NOT an official Disney source, and there is absolutely no mention of an interview with Al Weiss in the thread you linked to. I'm afraid I'm going to have to mark this down as a rumor and move it to the Rumor and News board. I've also renamed this thread from "So its Offical" to "Rumored Space Mountain refurb date."

A refurb for it would be good.

I'd like to see it from TTA during refurb. That might be interesting.

I have seen Space Mtn. from TTA "all lit-up" many times.

Expect that when Space Mtn. does go into rehab (Jan. or whenever) that if they continue to run TTA (likely would have to shut TTA down for at least PART of the Space Mtn. rehab.) that you'll be able to see the inside of Space Mtn. lit-up like never before!

They have been refurbing various Space Mountains at Disneyland. I hope it's like Paris...I love that one! I think this one is true with the rumors. Last time I was at Disneyland Cali. SM was closed...I really wanted to ride it!

So if this all turns out to be the case, then they are saying basically the same ride, just different aesthetics. I had hoped it would be a complete re-do of track and all, to be more like the version in Paris which rocks. Someone had mentioned a while back using the loading area for the old skybuckets to expand it, which would allow for a "launch" sequence like in Paris.

I guess we will see what happens, but part of me thinks that if Disney planned on closing one of their prime attractions, they would provide notice as early as possible....

well I'll tell ya one thing, I went on it in June and at the top of the moving walkway, there was a HUGE puddle and a FLOWING stream of water coming from above because it was pouring outside. That looks absolutely awful for Disney to have a building so beat up that it leaks like that.

I don't think the building is leaking. If it were, it would leak into the employees men's room which is located above the walkway.

I dont have a link but from talking to various CMs on my last trip it sounded just as if they were going to rebuilt the same ride from scratch, i.e. just tearing it apart and just redoing the same ride but making the effects better and a much smoother ride. I'm personally hoping for this to be true.

We just got back from Disneyland, and their Space Mountain is far and away better than the one in the Magic Kingdom. If they plan to refurb SM to be like Disneyland's it's well worth the down time. That said, I hope with Space Mountain down in January, Splash Mountain won't be down as well like it usually is that time of year. We go every January, and having both mountains down at the same time would really be sad. :(

I may be in the minority, but I like Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain better.
Disneyland's version seems like it has all corners, and very few drops. MK's version is not as smooth, but there is definitely more hills. :smokin:

I'm not believing anything or getting disapointed until I see some official
building or renovation plans. Anyone seen anything from Disney being
submitted for construction or renovation? THAT is when I will start
to get worried about my february trip!

It would be such a mistake for them to copy DL's SM and put it in WDW's MK. The whole point of the ride is the herky-jerky motion. It's the same with the Matterhorn - the world's first steel coaster. What if they redid that track to make it smooth, pleasant and free-flowing? That defeats the whole purpose! I've been on every SM in the world and WDW's is the best. It's old school. It's painful. It's what a coaster should be. The one in DL is nice but if they were going to do that in WDW why wouldn't they take it to the next level and give it loops, cobra's heads, Immelmans, etc? Why just do a smooth ride?

And while we're on the subject, how about leaving SM alone and removing the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway? That is such a 1970s afterthought, like they didn't have the money or creativity at the time to do better. Get rid of it, incorporate more flora and landscaping, and then build a large structure that could house a TS restaurant (non-character) and an attraction based upon the light cycles of Tron to coincide with the sequel coming out in two years. You could even build the TTA into the ride and have it looking down on the game grid. Yes, I've thought about this way too much, but it's a better idea than WDI teaching an old dog bad tricks. Sit, Ubu, sit. Good dog.

I had actually come across this on the UG website today. Then I saw this thread. Here is what the UG website says:

"Space Mountain refurb firms up

We've gotten word from a few good sources that the Space Mountain refurbishment is on schedule to begin the first week of January 2009 and last for 14 months. That date might shift a little in either direction, but don't expect to ride Space Mountain during 2009. "
