:scared1: I know it's tabu but, does anyone have any non-Fort campgrounds they like near WDW? I have a ressie in December and have tried (and will keep trying) to extend the ressie. I thought maybe we could stay at the Fort and then move off-site for the rest of our stay. Any recommendations?

River Ranch is supposed to be nice..... although I've never stayed there. Keep calling, because as the price of diesel/gas keeps going up, the amount of ressies is sure to fall.

River Ranch is a ways from Disney but is nice. We usually stay at Tropical Palms. Here is their link.

Yeah... River Ranch is too far away. Tropical Palms is nice. Donnie speaks highly of one nearer to Universal. I think it's called Turkey Lake?? There's a KOA on 192E, but I don't recommend it at all.

Holy moly, I just checked out River Ranch.... they have lots for sale for over $100,000 (I was being my nosey self) . It appears they are trying to keep up with Disney for nightly cost. Around $80 per night during peak season (Thanksgiving - April and holidays). I keep it in mind, KOA was $58 a night but nary a tree in sight. :sad2: Ok, it wasn't that bad but almost

KOA = Keep On Addin.
Hi cajunpeach...we're neighbors!
Someone else on the boards had mentioned that Turkey Lake Park is close by and cheap. It's not the Fort...but you can't beat the price for a overnight stay!

If you have kids, even if you don't. Tropical Palms is right next door to Old Town which has stores, BARS, and amusment rides and stuff that you can walk to from the campground. They also have a Motorcycle Show on Thursday nights, a Rice Burner Car Show on Friday nights and a Classic/Antique Car Show on Saturday Nights with live entertainment etc... Of Course, Tropical Palms is not cheap either but not quite as much as Disney.

Turkey Lake is over behind US/IOA. It is $15 a night and it's pretty basic. They have a comfort station w/ laundry and it's very shaded.
One thing I'd recommend though is to stay there 1st and then the fort. Going from the fort to another CG and still doing things at Disney don't cut it. We always go home from the fort. Good luck.

:wave2: Hi neighbor!!! I guess you camp at Lake Lanier often??? We went for the first time Memorial Day weekend. Too bad the lake is sooo far down. We had a lovely view of mud :rotfl: We camp at Allatoona often. The lake is above full pool (last I heard) It's great boating & camping there and VERY close to home (5 minutes)

Just for such occasion I put together the "Total Heresy, or Other Campgrounds in the WDW Area Web Page (http://www.popupcamping.info/WDWArea.htm).

We've camped a few times at Lanier this season for short weekend trips. We are 2 miles from Sawnee Park...so it's a nice "get out of the house" weekend. Glad to hear that Allatoona is full...our water comes from there eventhough we are only a mile from Lanier. :rotfl: Sorry to take your thread off topic...but what is the best park (s) to camp at on Allatoona?

I've been to that KOA and it IS that bad. There is no security, it's right off 192, next to a Sam's Club, and the surrounding neighborhood is less than desirable. I'd stay in a rest stop before I'd stay in that KOA.
There is another KOA in Davenport right off I-4 (probably 12-15 miles from FtW). At the same exit is another campground by the name of Ft. Summit. It's okay...but just okay.
On 192W almost to US Hwy 27 is an Encore park. It is very nice, and about 5-6 miles from WDW. I'd make a ressie for the Encore, and cancel if you can book your days at FtW.

It's Encore RV Resort - Orlando

Never stayed there but I was seriously looking into staying at Wekiwa Springs State Park just north of Orlando for a few days to wait for "value" season for check in. It was much cheaper than FW and the pictures on the website looked good with decent campground activities.

Yes Wekiwa Springs is nice.
BUT..............
It is off of I-4 exit 101
Magic Kingdom is off of I-4 exit 64
That 37 mile drive can be a long haul.
I should know that is my route.
It can take 45 minutes to an hour 1 way.
I just came back from spending one night at Turkey Lake..Its a very boring camp ground there were like maybe 15 ppl total..its cheap $15 per night and extra ppl after 4 is like $2.50..there were lots of mosquitos, the site had lots of red ant piles, and also the grass was high..

I've stayed at that Encore, and while I wouldn't call it "very nice" it has decent amenities and is clean with a very helpful staff. The place is nearly treeless, though. And sand is everywhere, which means it's going to be all over the floors of your rig, too. But hey, if you are basically using it as a place to crash after the parks, it'll work.

Has anyone stayed @ Fort Summit?
Fort Wilderness is full so I booked here.
Please don't tell me that a big mistake.
