Need help---where to stay in San Diego??????

We are looking at several places to stay.........I really want to stay at the Del but our price range is more like 150-180/night.
Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

1) Hampton Inn downtown San Diego for it's proximity to the Gaslamp area
Drawbacks......I've read it's really close to a train & parking 12$ extra $129

2) Courtyard downtown San Diego ---in the Gaslamp district in an old bank
Drawbacks....parking is 24$ extra & no breakfast $169

3) Heritage Park Inn Bed & Breakfast in Old Town San Diego $170-180

4) Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast in Hillcrest neigborhood
Drawbacks....further from the action $170-180

5) The Sofia Hotel-boutique hotel downtown San Diego $165-newly renovated
Drawbacks...not sure about parking

6) Gaslamp Plaza Suites-$180 in Gaslamp District & has a rooftop terrace & comp breakfast
Drawbacks...looks like it might need renovation & parking is 24$ extra

All of the hotels downtown are really nice and are close to all forms of transportation. The only drawbacks I see are the parking prices and the possiblity of congestion on Padres game days. Have fun!

We have been exploring a vacation rental by owner idea for San Diego. Anyone got experience with this? We used one in Orlando and we can't go back to a small hotel room with three teens!

We've done an overnighter at the B&B in Heritage Park. Cute place to stay.

Since you had your heart set on staying at the Hotel Del, you might want to consider The Glorietta Bay Inn (http://www.gloriettabayinn.com). It is literally across the street from the Hotel Del. The quoted price for a standard contemporary room is few dollars past your limit ($185/night) but you can get the same type of room via their internet special for $159/night. I've never stayed in their standard contemporary room, but DH and I did an overnighter in one of their mansion rooms and really enjoyed it. If you don't mind spending a few dollars more, consider this inn. It won't cost an arm and a leg like the Del but is very, very close to the action there.

We are SoCal locals, and we make a yearly summer pilgrimage to Paradise Point, literally next to Sea World, on "Vacation Island". A resort type of feel, not as refined as the Del, but very family friendly, beaches with fire pits (for evening s'mores), watercraft rentals (jet skis, kyaks, water trikes, sail boats, ski boats), several restaurants, an excellent "beach entry" pool with sandy bottom, poolside movies twice a week, bicycles, mini golf, tennis, minutes from Sea World, etc. etc. etc. During summer, you can see the nightly Sea World fireworks show from the resort.
