After six years of spring trips to HH, we are going for the first time in the summer next month. I know about the fireworks on Tuesday nights. Sounds like there is a BBQ and pool party also. Can anyone tell me about it? Is it at the Big Dipper pool? What is the BBQ like -- is it worthwhile? What else do they do? We are really looking forward to finally visiting here in the summer.

The BBQ is a buffet style meal with hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. It is a pretty good meal and is served near the Big Dipper pool/recreation area. - $22.95 adults, $10.95 children. In the evening they will open the slide and there are poolside games at 6:30 and again at 8:00. Earlier in the day there are usually pool games at the Beach House, a parade and an assortment of other activities and crafts.

Fireworks begin just after dark - around 9:00pm.

We've gone to the Star Spangled Tuesday BBQ both years we've been to HHI, including last month. We've always had fun, and I think it is worth attending. I forget the exact cost, but it is in the vicinity of $25 per adult and $10 per child. For that, you get a buffet consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, salad, beans, and a couple of other things I am forgetting. During the picnic they have three or four games, which I am pretty sure you need to attend (and pay for) the picnic to attend - in June, these games included watermellon spitting contest, an ice cream drop (on person lies on the shuffleboard court and their partner attempts to drop ice cream into a cone in their mouth, but usually it goes all over their face - great messy fun), and a pudding eating contest - also very messy. They also have balloon animals, face paining, though I'm not sure if this is just for picnic attendees (picnic people wear a wristband) or for everyone.

The picnic starts at 6:30p, and then at 8pm is the pool party and night slide - this is open to everyone, so you won't have needed to attended the picnic to do the pool party. This is also a lot of fun.

We enjoy the picnic each year...combined with the pool party and then the fireworks, it contributes to one of the highlights of our HHI week.

We just got back, I love HH...anyway, the bus driver that takes you over to the beach house told us not to leave the resort area on Tuesday. He said there is a ton of traffic due to the fireworks and festivities accross the marina. Regarding the BBQ, seemed like a lot to pay for Hot dogs and burgers so we passed. I cooked instead. Have fun.

We have never been to the backyard food part, but we always enjoy the pool party, that part is free. (This are games at the pool, not the picnic games)

We don't do the BBQ, only becuase that is like a weekly staple food for us and we like to eat different stuff we cant' get at home on vacation.

about 2 or 3 weeks ago they added new hamocks behind buildings 29 and 27 about 3 or 4 of them. this will be great spots to watch the fireworks.

Also the boardwalk between the mainbuilding and the units usually only have a few people out there. Most people are on that peir behind the pool.

Also, the tip about staying at the resort on tuesday is true. We walked over to San Miguels at 5:30 to eat and did not get back to the room until 8:00 pm. It was very crowded over at Shelter Cove hard to even walk back.

We hit the pool party until 8:55 and then got to our room before the fireworks started.. We got to sit on our deck in 27 and had homeaid Cheerwine ice cream and see the show. It was great.

I do not have time to do a trip report, but this was our 10th year at HHI and it was one of the best trips ever. I thought the resort is still in great shape.......Have a great time

We'll be there in 3 weeks and are going back and forth about whether or not to do the Star Spangled Tuesday. We've done it before and had fun but mabye we'll cook in the villa that night and go to the pool at 8!

Just back from our first HHI visit. We highly recommend the Star Spangled Picnic. In addition to the other things listed there was also corn on the cob, yummy glazed carrots, bar-b-que chicken, cornbread, baked beans, slaw and potato salad. Watermelon and apple pie were what I considered the dessert. We thought the food was better than we expected and compared to the other food values in the Shelter Cove vicinity, it wasn't a bad deal. The party was fun also.

VMS-I don't know how old your kids are, but definitely go to the pool party! It was so much fun! And be sure to be there at the beginning so the kids can sign up for all of the activities like the ice cream drop and the worm eatin(gummy worms), they also have dances with the kids by the pool, and with the adults like the YMCA song with the CM's. It is total fun and games. The food is good, hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pie, corn on the cob, watermelon, slaw, ice tea at the picnic tables, baked beans. You get an arm band to show that you have paid to eat, but don't need one to hang out at the pool. You can sign up at the front desk any time that week and then pay inside the general mercantile or the little lunch counter upstairs from the pool right before the party and they give you a receipt and you can get your armband. We were there mid to late June, and walked out to the edge of the dock 5 minutes before the fireworks and had a great view. Hope you have a great time. HH is our happy place!! Be sure to rent bikes as soon as you get there!!:)

We have been there 3 summers and have eaten at the bbq once, it was fine, chicken, burgers, etc. Lots of games for the kids and the pool slide is open late as others have said. We have also learned not to drive anywhere from the resort that night as the traffic is horrible, we were trying to return once after the fireworks and just getting to the bridge was a chore. Last year, we ordered take-out(there are alot of places that deliver) and watched the fireworks from outside our building (29). Then watched the mass exodus from the walkway and was very glad to be home! Its a great perk to be right at shelter cove for the fireworks....we have also walked over there earlier in the evening to see the entertainment and vendors, then walked HOME over the bridge.

The activities at shelter cove start early in the evening for the firework tuesday evenings. It is very difficult to dine at the restaurants there because they won't take reservations that night..just walk up and wait-one reason to go to BBQ at the resort or cook in your villa. the parking there is impossible after 6pm...its a zoo.

My kids are older -- 17, almost 15 and 11. But they are fun-loving and not super-jaded like a lot of teens, so I think they would gladly participate.

Tuesday night was GREAT at HHI!!! We did the bbq and the party and all loved it. The food was really good, plentiful, and not outrageously priced- I will be making (hopefully, willingly!;) ) my whole family of 27 :scared1: participate on our trip in August...aren't you glad you're going in June? :rotfl:
It's really good, old fashioned fun- what else would you expect?

This is one of many games they had going on- stuffing the CMs with balloons (I guess until they burst!) This was Harry, Dottie's son-

We love being in the main lodge, close to the lemonade and cookies! Last June we had a great villa, it was right next to the water and we saw a dolphin one afternoon along with lots of turtles with babies, all sorts of different birds and of course fish. I loved sitting out on that balcony everyday!

This year we are in a GV and bringing both sets of grandparents along so it will be cool to be in a different spot in the resort.

podsnel - I have a similar picture from our Tues. night in June. All those games were so funny!!! This will be our third summer and we will certainly be doing the Tues. night BBQ and pool games followed by the fireworks! My kids talk about that night throughout the year!

Like the other poster mentioned it starts to get bad early evening. Seriously DO NOT DRIVE ANYWHERE. If you do have your room keys and ID"s out because you are stopped a few places and asked for it.

The BBQ is OK... we did it the first year and now prefer to cook our own dinner and join in at the pool games. Plan on an early dinner so you dont miss out on any fun.

Few TIPS for Tuesdays...

There is a sign up sheet to particapate in some activities like the pie eating contest and some other things. Ask the CM's at Activities desk about it BEFORE tuesday.

There are crafts and such available and they are NOT FREE. (at least 2 years ago) They are not expensive, but they are not free. 2-4 bucks each if memory serves me. We still have some of the bracelets This is not a complaint, mearly information :woohoo:

It is a work in progress. I will continue to update it as I get more information. So be sure and check it often.:)

We have never participated in the BBQ - but we go to the pool party. Great fun.

Last summer we were a little late getting back to the resort from sightseeing around 4:30 pm and people were already parking and walking to Shelter Cove.

Another thing not to miss if you have younger kids. There is a gentleman, Shannon Tanner that gives concerts over in Shelter Cove. Usually 2 shows a night during the summer months. If I remember correctly 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The toddlers and preschool set love him.

Not IMO. We did it a couple of times, now we go for an early dinner somewhere else and come back for the party, I won't pay for that again.

Do they offer the games at the pool party or is it just for the bar b que? I could cook some hotdogs and hamburgers for much less than $150 but will my kids miss out on the games?
