So today was my first race.

I made the classic rookie mistake of starting out waaaaaaay too fast. I hit my personal best of an 7:50 1st mile; however, it resulted in the worst side stitch ever and walking a significant portion of the second mile. Lesson learned.

It was also still 90 degrees (at least via heat index) at 7 pm. Not good.

I finished right around 31:30. This was a small town race so there was nothing but gun time and my watch. I placed second my age group, but overall results aren't out yet. All and all it was a great learning experience and I'm proud of myself for completing it.

I too ran my first race today! I was absolutely petrified going into it. I am NOT a fast runner by any stretch. I usually average anywhere from 13-14 mpm. Also, although the course was advertised as "flat", that is highly debateable. A fairly large portion of it involved a gradual uphill....not huge, but enough to make it a challenge. We couldn't find a babysitter, and since it was a run/walk, they said DH could push the kids in the double jogger as long as he stayed out of other peoples way. He did that and managed to finish while pushing 100 lbs extra in 26:26! WTH??? Anyhow...I started out pretty good for me. Got through the first 2 pretty easy, and then I had to take a small walk break. Started running again, and finished in 43:12. It wasn't chipped, and it took us about 20 seconds (by DH's watch) to get to the start line. So really it was more like 42:52. But I did it! We are definately signing up for the race again next year...it was fun, my first, and they had a fabulous goody bag with tons of stuff in it! The only downside is the shirt has the Stop and Shop logo on the back...which is almost enough for me to not wear it...but I'll deal, since its my first race shirt.

I got a PM from Erica from Maine saying she'd be at the race, too. I looked for her and never saw her. So Erica, I tried!

WellesleyPrincess - Great job! :cool1: It's hard not to make that mistake the first time (or the second time, or the third time...) Our group director told us this morning that if you feel comfortable after the first mile, you're going too fast!

Johanna - Congratulations! You did a great job too. And what an amazing finish for DH too!
