My dog (golden retriever) got nosy at 3am and got sprayed by a skunk!!
someone gave me a recipe for 1 litre of 3% peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and a capful of dish soap. Does anyone have any other ideas? I was told that tomato juice is an "old wives tale"
She is stuck outside on this horribly hot day because I couldn't leave her in the house (she has lots of water!)

Tomato juice is really not effective. I have heard of the baking soda recipie but it would be painful if it got in the eyes. I would go to your local pet store and buy stuff especially made for dogs sprayed by skunk spray.

I used the recipe with peroxide, baking soda and dish soap ~ it worked great ! There is a car wash in my area that has a doggie bay and for $5 you get 5 minutes of shampoo, rinse and conditioner. It was awesome ~ she smells and looks great ! :yay: Thanks for the tip!

We always used Skunk Off which is a special shampoo but I would have loved to try your recipe. We had a dog that just didn't get it and always seem to get sprayed. Once she got sprayed twice within 10 days.
Somehow we couldn't convince her that white and black wasn't a squirrel to chase. :rotfl:
She's beautiful and I'm so glad she's all better.
We had an Irish Setter that got sprayed a few years ago and he bolted into the house before we knew it, and before we could react to get him back outside he had shaken that horrible spray all over the walls!! We were a week getting the smell out! :scared:

We have used the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap recipe on our yellow lab. You just have to make sure that you don't get it in their eyes. It worked great. The only thing we noticed was that his fur seemed dry afterward but being a yellow lab he had natural oils in his coat that eventually changed that. A doggie car wash bay would have been helpful. I'm glad it worked out for you. Your dog looks lovely.

Here is the deskunking recipe our vet gave us when our greyhounds got sprayed by a skunk for the first time. It's very effective in getting the smell out. 1 Litre Hydrogen peroxide, 4 Litres water 1/3 cup baking soda and 1 tablespoon dish soap. Put all ingredients into a bucket, mix and wash your dog with it. It should take out over 90% of the smell. It makes enough to wash 2 dogs. We always keep the components on hand, as we have skunks in the neighbourhood, and we never know when the hounds will get sprayed (usually at 3am in the morning!). Hopes this helps you with your smelly situation. Have a great day!!:flower3: :flower3:
