So is anybody watching How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

We're glued to the tube... something about Sound of Music, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the gruesome Survivor/talent-show aspect of the competition.

Who's your favourite Maria? My family is divided between Janna (best performance last night) and Kyla (hometown girl, and we think she was shafted by their choice for her song last night)

I watched it for the first time last night - really enjoyed it! My favourite last night was (I don't know any names sorry!) the performance from Wicked - thought it was great - although I'm not sure if I can see her as Maria. The one I would have chosen as Maria from the performances last night was the cute girl in the green dress that did a song from Guys and Dolls. Very well done. A surprisingly good summer fill-in show from CBC - who da thunk it?!

I'm a Janna fan! I do sometimes question the song and wardrobe choices for some of the girls. Very fun to watch and will be interesting to see the outcome.

Jayme for me - at least this week. I've been watching since the beginning and each week I change who I like. I like Janna - but can't see her as Maria. Personally - I would love to see Julie Andrews!!! But alas that will not happen.

Jayme is my favourite Maria. I was surprised the judges didn't comment that she hiked up her dress when it strated to fall down, though! LOL I think Janna is very talented but I can't see her as Maria. Janna's performance last night was excellent but the singing was very shouty.

Janna and Elisha are the faves at our house. I hated the previous 2 episodes with them singing pop songs. Its impossible to judge them when they are singing bad renditions of Avril!

I was at last week's taping of the performance show and the results show. Pretty fun stuff. If you get a chance to get tickets, you should try.

My favourite is Donna although she doesn't fit the body type of a Maria, I think she sings fabulously.

The three who sang were Kyla, Tamara and Katie. They sang Jesus Christ Superstar. Simon saved Tamara. Kyla and Katie are going home.

Thanks! Do you remember what Kyla & Katie sang last night (it was my first time watching and I don't know all their names yet, but I can remember based on the song).

I know I really liked Jayme & Elisa!

Hmmm... Katie sang something from Hair but it was a song I wasn't familiar with. The only reason I know it was from Hair was that John Barrowman said that he had performed in Hair and that Katie's performance was lacking. Kyla...I think but not sure, performed All That Jazz from Chicago. There was a lot of dancing in her number and by the end of it, you could tell she was winded. Simon called her on that.

I think that's what Kyla sang. I have to admit that there are a few of the girls who have the same hair colour, length of hair etc and I can't tell them apart.

I saw the CBC site for this Maria show. Too bad I don't live near the border! Janna seems to be the favorite contestant, according to the unofficial fan poll. I saw her picture and I think she looks a little like "Carey" from Zack and Cody. I think Jayme looks like Ariel a little.

Re Janna shouty singing... I think a lot has to do with the song she sang. "Defying Gravity" isn't a soft spoken song and pretty much is shouty. LOL I think the choice of song makes a HUGE difference in how the Canadian voting public votes. And I know that they've been given certain songs to do so that they can showcase different aspects of their singing (ie, Donna was given the rather passive song from Oklahoma but it was show us she could sing as a soprano which she hasn't done in the past.) But...if you're given a dud of a song ... like whoever got the song from the Evita movie last night...you can be sunk.

They don't get to choose their song? I agree, that makes a huge difference.
Song choice, performance, personality, costumes, even your expression as you sing, the viewers are looking at everything!

If you also watch Canadian Idol, please vote in my poll.:goodvibes

Well, one of our favourites - Kyla from Dartmouth, NS - is gone. She didn't have a good performance last Sunday, though I didn't think it was bad. But there is such hot competition! Those women can sing. Makes a great show.

I do think the choice of song can influence the voting, to a degree where they are really engineering the show/voting to get rid of the ones they have decided should be cut... just like in a normal audition, I guess, so it's not evil or anything, just that it seems they're trying to over-play the audience choice aspect of it.

And did you notice how all the women who had a lot of dance moves to do in their numbers had poor vocal performances last Sunday? Now if Maria was a really dance-intensive role, that would make sense to see if they can sing and dance at the same time... but then they should all have to do it. A level playing field!

We get to go this Sunday! I'm very excited. :goodvibes

Based on this week's performance, I really liked Marisa. I also liked Jayme and thought that Elicia did a fantastic job (though I usually don't like that song). I found that Donna was underwhelming this week (though I usually like her too), and I really didn't like Tamara's performance. It seems like Janna is really the favourite, but honestly (and I feel bad about this) I can't watch her and not think about Celine Dion, and I found the costume/wind-machine made that even worse this week. Oh well.

Overall, I'm really enjoying the show, even if it seems like it's going very fast (two people gone next week too I think).

And isn't it great to watch a reality show that isn't a remake of an American one? (no offense intended at all here, but Canadian Idol is just soooooo lame!)

I tend to agree, but I got the impression this was a remake of the British show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Do_You_Solve_A_Problem_Like_Maria). Based on the wiki article, the BBC did three versions for three different musicals.

I like both Maria and Canadian Idol! The level of talent blows me away. We love it that the Canadian Idol kids often play piano or guitar AND sing, and they all seem like such nice kids on both shows.

We went to the performance taping on June 29, it was lots of fun! Their personality and stage presence is quite different live than on the tv.

For the person who is going to the taping this coming week - arrive at the studio early! We got there at 5:30 (it said to arrive between 5:30 and 6:00) and the line up was huge, almost out the door. They said the check-in closes at 6pm sharp, and at 5:50 I could still see a line way down the hall. Not sure if everyone got in or not. You get seated in order of arrival, so our seats were 2nd row from the back, on the far side. Once you are in the studio lobby there's a table for you to make posters, so you don't have to bother bringing one from home. And they do trivia and singing contests during the commercial breaks, so it's a lot of fun.

Janna is currently my pick as the winner, I think she has great stage presence. I also like Marisa (she's the hometown favourite) and Donna (lovely voice).

The cute girl in the green dress is Marisa McIntyre and she hails from Waterloo Ontario. I have had the privilege to watch this amazing talent since she was 8 years old. She is an extremely dynamic performer who at 13 began her professional career playing Amaryllis in "The Music Man" at the Stratford Festival. Prior to that she was starring in school and community theatre productions, winning Kiwanias Festival scholarships for her amazing vocal skills and dancing up a storm as a competitive dancer(she is a phenomenal tapper).
At age 18 Marisa landed the plum role of Sophie in Toronto's production of Mamma Mia. She performed in Mamma Mia for 2 years and later returned for the final 6 months of the production before it closed in May 2005.
All the women are extremely talented and we have been enjoying the show each week since its' inception. Even had the thrill of attending results last Monday.
If you haven't watched tune in Sunday night at 8 CBC.
Our vote is for Marisa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know! It would kill me to be a judge for this. I would go to see any of these final six perform in that show. If they ever bring it to Halifax, that is. You folks in Toronto get such a range of great theatre there!

I think Janna is my overall favourite. Donna's got the best "Maria" voice but she seems like more a singer-singer and less a singer-actress to me. But all of them sparkle!
