View Full Version : Don't close the Backlot Canteen!

We just returned from WDW and while visiting Disney Hollywood Studios, the bartender, Dee, at the BAcklot Canteen (the little bar next to Studio Catering and Honey I Shrunk... Movie set adventure) said they were recently taking measurements to possibly turn the little bar into an ice cream stand. I don't know if anyone shares my feelings on this, but I was VERY disappointed. :sad1: Stopping at this bar is always a part of our daily ritual when we visit the studios. It has the coldest draft beer in all the world  and the two nicest bartenders who've been there for years. My two kids can't wait to get a Frozen Fireball, their frozen Fanta Strawberry/Banana drink. Dee asked me to spread the word and for those who care to voice their opinions to those who matter and hopefully the ice cream stand won't come to fruition. That's all they need is another ice cream place! Does anyone know of any contacts where we can voice our opinions to Disney? :confused3

Ice cream is more family friendly than booze! Perhaps a "guest survey" was taken. Or at least that's the excuse they're using for closing Pleasure Island!

That's a weird decision. I would imagine booze would make much more money than ice cream.

DH is mad!! His favourite drink is at the Backlot Canteen-- the Stoplight Margarita!!
Let's start the letter-writing campaign now!!:rotfl:

While I don't like the idea of ANY bar closing, the Canteen did seem a bit out of place. Out in the open, obvious that it's a bar and kids walking by all day long. The only other place in a park that is a full blown bar is the Dawa Bar at Animal Kingdom but the seating area there is covered and the bar is well back from the main walkway.
There always is the bar inside the 50s Prime Time.

There are open bars everywhere in the World Showcase. I don't see why that matters.

I guess I've been missing the full bars that serves mixed drinks on my walks around the lagoon. Where are they so I can check them out over the Labor Day weekend?

not to be off topic, but when we were at Disney in May, 07 one night we were at the MarketPlace and we participated in a survey with a bunch of questions about Downtown Disney area....:flower3:

You missed the stands all along the walkways in each and every country that blatantly sell alcoholic drinks or are you only kidding around?

I've been to DS 25-30 times and I never knew there was a bar in that vicinity. My kids always play at the Honey I shrunk the kids area and I'm sure I've sat there longing for a drink. Will have to check that out in October - if it's still up and running.

I guess I was confused. Yes, those places are all around. But the Backlot Canteen is a total bar. To be, a bar is one where mixed drinks are served. The "high potency" drinks. Beer and wine, to me, are not those kind of drinks.

frankly in my opimion, there shouldn't be any outsdie bars at any theme park unless it's a special event like the food and wine festival. I always thought the canteen was out of place. I have no porblem with serving alcahol in restaurants. Last christmas they even set up temporary bars throughout the park and I didn't like that either.

That's an interesting definition of "bar" that you came up with. I don't see why I place that sells wine and beer is ok but throw in a rum and coke and it's the devil? In any case, I think the margaritas in Mexico would definitely be consiered "high potency" drinks. And remember, American beer is the only beer that remotely resembles tap water. Most beer actually does have a respectable level of alcohol.
I don't really understand the argument that alcohol shouldn't be readily available and visible at a theme park, either.

I love going to this spot! We just went in June and when I got my credit card statement it showed Backlot Ice Cream. I didn't remeber getting any ice cream that day. So, I guess Disney has officially changed its name, but not what it serves. Yet?

I like Ice Cream. I'm also often very hot when I am in that area. Finally, I have never felt the need to get boozy while I'm there. Therefore, I welcome the change.
I hope they have butter pecan.

If you don't like it--don't go. And let others who do enjoy the bars bring their business there!

This thread is going to get closed very quickly if everyone keeps bickering about the definite of "bar" and whether or not alcohol should be served in a theme park. Everyone agree to disagree please. And yes, that includes me.

Okay...I have been to MGM 8 times over the last 10 years and didn't even know it existed, nor have I read about it. Is it an open bar? Like the Dawa Bar? We love the Dawa Bar...I'm surprised I havent' seen it...Is it tiny?

We're just having a civil conversation. I don't think anyone's getting nasty. Why would the thread get locked? The OP wrote that he likes the Backlot Canteen. Obviously, people are going to discuss whether or not they agree.

Since there is no official word on this from Disney, we've decided to move this thread over to the Rumors board.

Maybe they need more of these in Downtown and around the various Resorts and move them away from the parks?
I love having a covered outdoor bar to visit but not too close to the kids. The bar near the pool at PO: Riverside was nice. How about more scenic spots?

FYI: in regards to bars,In Florida there are two types of liquor licences. One allows a bar to sell wine and beer only. The other one allows you to also sell "hard" liquor" i.e. rum, vodka, tequila etc.
Until recently I never realized that the canteen sold stuff of then beer. Now I hope they don't close it. The lounge at the Prime Time can get quite crowded.
Dawa Bar is one of my favorite bars on property. Whenever we are at AK, I make a stop for a margaritta or two.

Hopefully it stays open a little while longer so I can experience it firsthand

I also was told by the bartender back in May that this likely would be closing...too bad as DHS has so few options...maybe just Tune In left if this goes. My wife and I usually grab a 180 Spin there and they do have Yuengling which almost tastes like beer (at least compared to the usual Disney AB offerings).

Oh, by the way, can someone post a picture of this place? I can't picture it......:confused3

You could stop by right before and get a Snowball or another Seasonal light-up drink to enjoy while watching the show. I will be sad to see it go, because other than that you had to go to a restaurant and order the drink. It didn't taste the same at the Derby, and was smaller in portion for the same price, if I remember correctly.

Finally found this place on Saturday--it is easy to miss, around the corner from the outdoor restaurant, near the Back Lot Tour. Awesome, friendly bartender, "Dee." Now that I've found it, I'll be sad if it does go.

Let's face it, the bars themselves doesn't necessarily bring in more money... but parents under the influence of alcohol do! ;)
