Universal Studios Japan has become the most successful new theme park in history, with 11 million guests in its first year in operation.

The Osaka park opened in April 2001, with initial projections of 8 million visitors in the first year, according to a news release from the park.

"We've far exceeded our most optimistic numbers," said Tom Williams, chairman and chief executive officer of The Universal Studios Recreation Group.

The park has rides based on such movies as "Jurassic Park," "Jaws," and "E.T." It also features attractions developed specially for Japan including "Snoopy Studios," "Woody Woodpecker's Animation Celebration" and "Universal Studios Motion Picture Magic," hosted by Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg.

As part of its plan to accommodate surging park attendance, Universal Studios Japan officials have announced the addition of the multi-million dollar "Hollywood Premiere Parade," debuting April 27.
