Can you put a tent on one of the sites with hookups, the 2nd lowest level site, sorry, I am not up with camping lingo and that seems to be all that is available the week we wanted to go. Online it tells me what is recommended for that site and tents are not listed. I of course would prefer the cheaper.
And if we can, will we look really odd being in a tent around tons of others that have pop ups or something?
Is camping at Ft Wilderness fun? It seems quite expensive, more then we ever pay for a room on disney property, but we usually vacation during value season. I would want this more to be about the campground then the parks. Thanks for any help, hints or suggestions.

I'm not sure if you can place a tent on a pad or not. But I don't know what their policies are. We camped at Ft. Wilderness on my last trip in 2001. It was our first time camping at Disney World. I liked it, but it was very expensive. We rented a golf cart to get to some of the areas in the campground. One thing to keep in mind is that even though you are in a campground, you are still paying resort prices at the stores and restaurants there. Even "roughing it" at Disney comes at a high price.

You can put a tent on any site. Keep in mind there are going to be some changes in the types of sites for larger RVs, which more concrete will be added to the pad. This will make it a little difficult to stake down a tent. Our first trip to FW was in a tent. We stayed in the 100 loop right between two large Class A motor coaches.

NEVER be ashamed of your tent! All those RVers should admire you for your stamina (putting up with the heat)!
But, seriously, I would ask about the size of the sand pad (or unpaved clearing), whether there would be enough ground for staking it down. Personally, I have a 10' x 15' tent and always have to check ahead of time to be sure the sand pad is big enough.

I took my son for his first vacation ever, and my first time back to Disney since 1990, last October and we were supposed to have a tent in a preferred spot. I'll need to eventually do a trip report to explain that one. The short version is: We were forced to camp in our car. Our very, very small car. I paid extra for the preferred because of proximity to the things I wanted.
Fact is, other campers really came to our rescue and we had RVers as well as other tent-folk at our site. It was a truly awesome time. So much so that I took a second job so we can tent camp again this October (this time with a working tent) and we will be on a preferred site.
Answer to your question: I would be shocked if you have any problems with your tent in a preferred site other than, possibly, enough sand area to stake it. You can always move the picnic table, though!

Oh, man...!!!! We will be there Oct. 20 - 24 so it looks like we will miss that party but thanks for letting me know. :goodvibes
I can't wait for MNSSHP. This year my boy is going as Yu-gi-oh and I'll be the slightly more modest, closer to plus-sized version of the Dark Magician Girl. Oh, yeah. And brunette. Still... good times!
