I never thought of this, but as I was reading the travel tips on the Delta.com website, it says that you should not pack wrapped gifts. If you have a present for someone at your destination, wrap it after you get there.

I know that this might sound a little stupid but is this because they unwrap the packages?

Yes, it's for security when they look through your luggage. They will unwrap it, and it's better to save them the hassle.

Airlines have been stating for years not to wrap gifts, esp in carry-on due to security reasons. I have seen passengers (years prior to Sept 11) have to unwrap gift wrapped packages before boarding.
Airlines always warn about this around the holidays.

Just remember to pack your gift wrap!:D I forgot to last year and had to resort to WDW package bags for wrapping paper. DD did not mind, but still I can't believe I forgot the wrapping paper!!!!!!!!
