Is there a petition going around the DIS that can be passed around and electronically "signed" petitioning Disney to keep the Adventurers Club in some capacity? I mean, you could get thousands of fans to sign, correct?

Online petitions are never as good as real ones. I suggest if someone really wants to make an impression of the PTBs about this, that they get people to put pen to paper and send signed letters.
Better yet, though, would be for folks to remember that lack of patronage translates into a greater likelihood that attractions will be decommissioned. So while this offering is probably already history, look around WDW at the things you enjoy. Do you always visit them? Do you visit them multiple times per trip? If not, then don't get too attached to the attraction. What's worse -- is the place empty when you visit them? If so, then you really need to start selling the attraction and get other visitors to visit the attraction in large numbers, or prepare yourself for the possibility that the attraction will be closed.
The time to "save" an attraction is long before it is slated for being closed.
In case you missed it in the other thread, here it is. Thank you to whomever put it together!

Got to agree with Bicker on this one.
Even though I used to be a faithful visitor to PI, the recent changes to open the entire island to all and the resulting changes in admission practices have driven me away. I suspect that this is true of many others which resulted in the Island becoming less profitable. Only continued high attendance would have prevented this from happening.
The reason PI is closing is that Disney did it in.

It is my impression, and is based on some knowledge but probably not exact knowledge in all areas, that the Adventurers Club and the Comedy Warehouse did not suffer from a lack of patronage.
The closure of these two clubs is apparently due to the desire of WDW to revamp the entire Downtown Disney concept. Nightclubs of any type don't belong in their new vision, whether they make money or not.
Can a guest petition, letters, change their vision? Probably not. But I couldn't tell you that raising their awareness will do no good whatsoever.

Sorry to say this, but I doubt a petition will have any impact at this point. I walk through PI on a regular basis in the evening. AC is usually dead. It tends to pick up a little on weekends, but not what I'd call a big crowd. Once Disney makes a decision and announces it, it rarely changes its plans. But, good luck!

What I have heard is that these were the only two clubs that made any profit whatsoever.
That's probably relative, as WDW is no doubt correct if it believes that shopping and restaurants will bring in much more money.
I can't bring myself to say "don't express your appreciation for these venues to WDW, because what's the point of doing that?" so I won't discourage anyone from doing so.

Perhaps it could be relocated--it could fit in really well in Animal Kingdom, and might get more patronage also. DTD, though I like it, IS out of the way and def. not the main focus of my trip...as I'm sure many others would say also.

Actually, it would fit well in D-HS, between Indy and Star Tours. Perhaps it could be alternatively themed; one day themed a la Indiana Jones, and one day themed as the Mos Eisley Cantina.

I've never been to WDW, or even their DTD, but *how cool* would that be, to have a nightclub themed like that?
Actually not a nightclub, but an all day place where the kids could be there during the day, and at night it could change (that's allowed under WA laws, not sure about FL laws) to adults only. As long as light sabers and blasters are checked at the door, I'd love that. :goodvibes

No offense, but e-petitions carry little to no weight with anyone.
Companies generally rank complaints in this order of importance.
1) face to face meetings (Particularly if it is a public place where other customers/clients may observe)
2) Hand Written letters. (The logic is that if you took the time to write a letter by hand or print it off the PC, buy a stamp, mail it, etc. It must be important to you.)
3) Formal Petitions. (I put this after hand-written letters because the weight varies. A) a formal petition with signatures, verifiable by including addresses and or phone numbers will at least make them take notice if nothing else. B) Petition with a bunch of unverifiable signatures will be placed in the trash.)
4) Phone calls. People often call in "the heat of the moment" to complain. If the took the time to sit down and write it out they may realise that it's not that big of a deal, they could have been in the wrong, etc. This combined with the slight anonymity of the phone makes people sometime act more aggressivly thatn they would in person so complaints are taken with a grain of salt.
5) e-mail: Instant, like the phone e-mails are frequently written in "the heat of the moment" with no thought and sent. The near complete anonymity of the internet makes these types of complaints nearly worthless. I say "nearly" because occasionally there is a rational complaint in them but they a few and far between and sometime get lost in the shuffle of nonsense.
6) e-petitions: combine the cons of e-mail and a non-verifiable petition and this is what you get. Most only require an e-mail address as verification. You can make a new e-mail address in a heart beat with google, Yahoo, etc. I personally have 5 different e-mails for various reasons, so I could sign a petition 5 times. I could make up names for several more a sign again and again.
Now on this one, they actually require a name and address so it would carry a little more weight but how hard is it to pick out a name and address from a phone book and type it in. It's too easy. Yes, they actually think about that, if you went the hard route with hitting the streets collecting, it shows that you are far more serious about it. People at their houses or walking down the street that take the time to listen and interrupt what they were doing to fill out the petition will also be taken more seriously. On the internet to easy to just "click and forget".
Translation: e-petition = Unlikely that any company will pay any attention to it at all.
Sorry. I'm not trying to start anything, just pointing out the reality.

I think it's obvious that an online petition has very little chance of succeeding. Is that a reason not to do it? Of course not. In its own statement, WDW said that their decision is based on guest feedback who desire more broad based entertainment options. If that is true, then I'd have to imagine they would at least read a petition, to gather guest feedback.

If I lived nearby of course I would patron it more, but unfortunately I live in Texas lol. However I don't think an online petition could hurt anything. Figment came back, and the old Country Bears show did. Maybe they could just move the club if nothing else. Or if they feel it's outdated then update it. Or both lol. It's just so unique and such a part of the whole experience, I can't believe they would close it for good :(
I'm going to guess that most people already know that. I'm pretty sure people understand that the odds are fairly astronomical. But considering this is an online community with members around the globe, it's not really practical to pass around a formal hand written petition or arrange for a formal meeting with one person. And what if by some miracle 10,000 people signed the online petition (not likely but there are 100k DIS members). My opinion is that 10k online signatures are more impactful than 50 phone calls.

I used to live in Orlando, and I just visited PI for the 1st time in about 10 years. It was a ghost town compared to what it used to be. PI opened in the 80s when there was nothing in downtown Orlando except Church Street Station. Locals flocked to PI and CSS went out of business. Now downtown Orlando has a thriving club scene, so locals leave PI to the tourists, and the families staying at Disney are not usually club hoppers. It's sad to see it go, but when I was there a few weeks ago, I could tell the end was near.
On the other hand, I went to Adventurers Club for the 1st time and loved it! Lived in Orlando 10 years, even had a PI annual pass one year, and had never been there. I'm disappointed because I'm going with a friend in Oct and I wanted him to see it. Hopefully I can get him there before they close.

I wasn't saying that it shouldn't be done. Go for it! I was just stating that Disney's decisions are usual final. There have been a lot of things that some guests have hated to see go and have registered there displeasure. For the most part, it has made no difference. And, while Disney's press release said that the change is due to guest feedback, I'd be willing to bet it has a lot more to do with revenue. PI has been a losing venture for some time. They can make a lot more money with restaurants and shops. Money is the driving force behind most Disney decisions, as is true with most corporations.

I found an interesting article by Jim Hill from 4 months ago talking about the rumored new "Disney's Night Kingdom." In it he says one would enter DNK through a new, supersized version of the Adventurers Club that is now on Pleasure Island. So maybe all hope is not lost?? Just a rumor of course, but I need something to grasp onto here lol! Now my only wonder is, would the club only be available to those going to DNK or would it also be open to the public? Guess we'll have to wait till 2011! For once I reeallly hope a rumor is true lol.

I'm not trying to dash anyone's hopes here or burst anyone's bubble, but I just want everyone to be aware that it is highly unlikely that any e-mails, hand-written letters, contacts to Disney Guest Services, phone calls, or online petitions will change Disney's mind on this one. If you do get a response it will be something along the lines of "Thank you for your feedback, we understand you love the clubs but we are now taking DTD in a different direction that we are sure you will love. Please visit our other shops, theme parks, restaurants, etc. in the meantime." I saw something very similar happen with the closing of Disney's online game VMK. Some very, very heartfelt letters and phone calls were made but it really didn't help at all. They understood that we were upset about it but they didn't change their minds, and they will likely take the same stance with this issue. Disney knows that with every change they make, there will be a bunch of people unhappy about it, so they are prepared to deal with the letters, phone calls, etc. with automated and canned responses. They are a business, a huge corporation and they really only care about making as much money as possible. I'm not saying that you should stop with the petitions and letters and things, but just don't get your hopes up thinking you can "save" your favorite DTD club.

I am very upset to hear that AC may be closed. It was such a unique experience, one that has never been forgotten. I am fine w/the nightclubs closing, never went to them. But PLEASE keep AC!!!!
If not at that location, then relocate it somewhere else. That attraction will be sorely missed by many.
Anyone else like to join me in voicing our distraught over losing AC?????

I do agree that visiting an attraction is the way to keep it open, but whenever we were at AC, the place was always packed...most times it was standing room only. We've visited during traditionally slow times of year and still found it to be full throughout the night, so it was obviously popular and well-liked. I think it unfortunately got lumped-in with the rest of the clubs at PI; therefore, had no chance of staying open when the decision to close the other clubs was made.

the clubs are closing now so disney can save money. The economy is expected to tank this fall and this way disney can shut down their clubs and not have to spend any money on labor costs. also the new head of DTD came from DL and at DLR they have no nightclubs in their DTD area, just restaurants and shops. and they aren't disney restaurants so disney gets to lease out the land and not have to worry about the labor. the only way a comedy club or adventurer's type club to exist is if a third party wanted to come in and create that kind of atmosphere. if yo uwant to go to clubs there is always city walk.. they do a thriving business. oh and one more thing I heard awhile back that the virgin megastore was going to be closing so there will be a huge space disney needs to lease out.

Yes, I am heart broken over this closure. It really, truly was my absolute favorite thing to do at Walt Disney World, and something I cannot replace anywhere for any price. I just simply cannot believe it is going away.
TheRustyScupper
06-29-2008, 10:57 AM
. . . I just simply cannot believe it is going away . . .
1) Not enough revenue and profit.
2) Night clubs need a lot more drinks being sold than Adventure's and Comedy.
3) The revenue-per-square-foot just isn't there.
4) If you look around, you don't see people drinking 3-5 or more drinks quickly.
5) They tend to nurse 1-2, and there is no major food offering to add revenue.
6) So, the alternative is wine & food through eateries.

The time to "save" an attraction is long before it is slated for being closed.

I think this is true, to a point. I don't think, however, it is all that. My take on it is the crime element PI has attracted as of the last few years. There have been gang problems. I have been to PI four times in the last month, and I am blown away by the sheer numbers of OCS that are there when everyone empties out. I don't think Disney wants the liability.

( Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, Eagles, David Bowie, even DISCO, ) I grew up in the 70's so it is a bit nostolgic for me when I walk into the club.We really enjoyed the improv and the audience participation @ the COMEDY CLUB. Both my boys came with us and enjoyed/laughed :rotfl: :rotfl: at all the shows. I do agree that PI became a hangout for locals and became outdated but Disney should KEEP/MOVE the COMEDY CLUB,ADVENTURES CLUB to other locations. Anyone feel the same??

signed, and forwarded the the site to several PAP friends/family. and this is what I wrote in the site...
Shame on Disney! It is a great club, and has no equal. Move it if you must.
And a "Round of Golf" for us with PAPs? Joy.NOT! Will Disney provide the clubs? Golf Lessons? Have a French Maid deliver drinks? Will the golf course be open AT NIGHT? This is one more reason we are considering NOT renewing the 9 Prem. Ann. Passes. And instead of trying to talk friends and familiy into getting a PAP I am now telling them it is NOT WORTH the extra cost.
Ok, it doesn't read as well as I would like... when I get peeved my dislexia really kicks in!

2850 tuesday morning. I think that's great.
So how does it work? When does WDW get sent a copy of the petition? Or do people just send in emails with a link to the petition site?

I was trying to wait until it started slowing down and we got as many sigs as possible before I did anything with it. I assume people have already sent them the link but I think printing it off and sending it in would make more of an impact. Heck if people wanted to send me protest letters I would be willing to mail everything at the same time. It would be best if they were personally signed but if you have access to a scanner or fax machine that would make it easy. PM me and I'll give you my fax or address!

I'm finally taking my oldest, dearest friend with me to Disney World next year, and I'd gotten her really excited about the AC. And now it's closing! This just isn't right!
I'm not going to miss most of the other stuff there, but this is unique and so very Disney! I can't believe it!

I sent this email last Friday when I found out about the closure.
"To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this email through a haze of tears after reading of the
impending closure of the clubs of Pleasure Island, and most especially, of the Adventurers' Club. While I understand that you have made this business decision that you feel benefits your company, I feel compelled to share my extreme disappointment and sadness over the loss of this WDW icon.
My husband and I currently have a trip booked to visit the WDW resort in
December of this year. We have planned our entire itinerary around being
able to spend as many nights as possible at the Adventurers' Club, even going so far as to leave parks early, arrive to parks late and have early
meals so that we could maximize our time in our favorite locale. Now,we
find that you will be closing our favorite place on property before our trip.
I feel it is only fair to let you know that we are now considering cancelling our trip. "It's only a bar" you say. "Isn't that a bit drastic?" Well, it is more than that to us. It is the embodiment of the Disney spirit in an adult-friendly format. It is somewhere that couples like us can go after a fun-filled day in the parks to be with other adults while still being immersed in Disney magic.
I'm sure that others won't make such a drastic move as to cancel their trips
after hearing this news. I fully intend to wait a couple of days to see how
I feel before doing so myself. However, should we choose to do so, my
$5,000+ vacation will end up somewhere else. I know that amount is a drop
in the bucket to you, but it constitutes a large amount of vacation dollars
that I will be sure to spend in a place that doesn't make decisions that
reinforce their bottom line without consideration to the loyalty and
feelings of their guests.
As I can only imagine how many emails your office receives on a daily basis,
I don't expect nor anticipate receiving a response from a live body. I have
just never felt more compelled to share my disappointment and sorrow with
your company over any other topic.
Thank you for your time.

I just received this response.
"Dear Mrs. Clark,
Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.
We recognize that the closing of the Adventurer's Club will disappoint
Guests who have come to enjoy the unique entertainment that has been
offered over the years. With that in mind, please know a tremendous
amount of thought went into the decision as we bring the new vision for
Downtown Disney to life. As we look to the future, we are excited about
the evolution that will occur over the next two years, introducing a
brand new mix of shopping, dining and other experiences for our Guests'
enjoyment.
Our Guests' feedback, as well as their continued enthusiasm for our
products and services, are very important to us. We genuinely
appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts with us.
Mrs. Clark, we truly hope you and your husband will decide to visit us
in December.
Sincerely,
Walt Disney World Resort"
I'm thinking they have NO PLANS to even think about keeping it. They are too dead set on having more of their precious shops. I don't go to DTD as it is now since we don't really shop on vacation. And now they are alienating me from the one activity I did do there? And I was one of the people who actually DID drink at the AC. More than 2 drinks even. More like 4 a night.
This is my response back.
"Thank you for your response.
I realize that you feel Downtown Disney needs more shopping venues and that the revenue generated from these areas will be greater than that of the Adventurer's Club. However, my husband and I already do not visit Downtown Disney because we can shop at home. We cannot, however, participate in themed activities of the nature provided by Adventurer's Club.
My husband and I do not have children and visit WDW since it is an enjoyable destination for a mix of park time and adult venues like Pleasure Island. With the removal of one of the few adult oriented opportunities, we will be seriously re-evaluating future visits to WDW. It is false advertising for WDW to say they are an adult appropriate destination when there are little to no adult entertainment opportunities on property.
We have not made our final decision regarding cancelling our December trip. If we do decide to come, we will be leaving property at least one evening to enjoy the adult appropriate opportunities available to us at Universal's CityWalk.
Regards,
XXX"

1) Nice numbers.
2) But, are people also pledging to drink more heavily?
3) 1-2 drinks per night is not enough to save it.
4) WDW needs revenue per square foot.
5) If we commit to lots of drinking, then we have a chance.
6) Bars make money by selling drinks.
7) If they don't sell lots of drinks, then put in a store or restaurant.
NOTE: Business is business. If YOU owned a bar, could you make money on a people who drank 1-3 drinks per night? You need volume to make a profit. If you can't make a profit, why did you open the bar?

That error seems to actually be a problem with Firefox as it appeared okay in Internet Explorer. It should be fixed now -- if you're still getting that error send me a PM.
Also, I can provide a link to that site from the banner without doing a redirect, if that is okay with him.

You can make a profit when you're charging a $20 cover. You can also make a profit if the appeal of your bar drives enough crowds to the area to allow you to charge higher rent to nearby businesses.
I just clicked on it and it seems to be working.

I got a reply from DIS guest communications today...I think we can kiss the club goodbye whether we like it or not, but I am still going to try. We need to get Iger and Crofton there. Holy crap. I'm going this weekend and there's no way I am going to have 4 to 6 drinks in there. They'd have to carry me out or let me pass out in the treasure room or something. If I'm passed out I won't even drink 4 Diet Cokes after reaching my limit.

I think this is a great point and should be an important piece. This is what I think should set AC apart from the rest of the things they are getting rid of. Agreed! That is why I am not supporting the "Save Pleasure Island" movements. I don't really want to save all of PI, and that movement is TRULY futile lol. We can't save Pleasure Island as is, it's going to close. But I really think we have a slim slim chance of getting AC moved, even if it's in the future.

They might carry it because it is Disney, but don't expect to generate much support from locals. I hardly ever see any locals at PI. I see them at the AMC on the West Side, but that's about it. The local younger crowd are more likely to frequent individual clubs around town or City Walk.

I understand why you say that. I guarantee, if you lived here for very long, you wouldn't go every weekend. Living in the Disney bubble gets a little old after awhile. Doing the same thing every weekend would get old as well. Believe me, there are some really nice places to go and things to do in Orlando in addition to Disney. You also have to take in to account the cost factor. It doesn't seem that expensive when you are on vacation. At that point, you're in spending mode. For everyday life, it gets expensive.

I just got this message from Brandon on Facebook with actual phone numbers to Disney execs including Lansbury! We should definitely call this weekend while they aren't there and leave messages, cause I'm sure when Monday comes the numbers will be changed.
Today, I was given the personal voicemail numbers for Barry Carlson and DTD VP Kevin Lansberry from a guest who found their numbers in the TeleCast dropped carelessly at Downtown Disney.
I took this opportunity to call and leave a voicemail for both today and hope you will consider doing so as well; remember, be thoughtful, sincere and always let your conscience be your guide.
Also, be brief! The shorter the calls--the more we will fit on their voicemail
before "voicemail is full."

Everyone, if you want to make yourself heard, the very best way is to write a real, physical letter. These carry much more weight (figuratively too!) than e-mail messages or online petitions.
Please, if you want to save this attraction, drop letters to the following addresses. Talk about any special memories you have of the club, and why it's a favorite Disney attraction. (You can just write one letter and change the address for each one.)

I heard a rumor from my very good friend, who is a CM, who heard it from another CM in entertainment (we all know how that goes), but it's something. Rumor has it they're keeping three clubs, one of which is AC. I hope she's right!
I totally agree about the letter writing. In these times of emails, there's nothing like getting gobs of paper mail delivered to one's office!
We were at AC last night...caught the maid's show and Hoopla. CMs didn't seem too upset about it closing. I was inferring that they knew something (good) that we didn't?!!!

The page is kind of a group effort between Ahect, myself and a guy from Flickr. Ahect was nice enough to put a link to the letter writing on an upper frame he made when you click on the main link from the main homepage. If you think it would help I could add a link from the main page, just didn't want it to be too cluttered. Up to 4700 signatures by the way!!!

Oh, I see it, Marie! The top frame gets cut off in my browser, and the text is really easy to miss. At first glance, it looks like an advertisement.
I would implore you to do anything you can to make it /impossible/ to miss without cluttering your lovely site. Perhaps a link inside the main frame, in the body of the petition text?
How about a link from the main page in the form of a button, maybe with a picture of the radiothon? (After all, we want to help the AC keep its doors open, and we don't have a mayonnaise-loving benefactor of our own!)
I am convinced that physical mail is our best bet.

Arista, what browser are you using, and what is your screen resolution? I've tested the site down to 640x480 and all the text displayed properly.
Also, as far as I know, there is no way to change the text of a petition once it's been published -- that's why I came up with the frame originally.

I designed and ordered a teeshirt through Zazzle.com with a picture of the AdvClub logo on the front with big, bold letters, "Save the Adventurer's Club!" On the back, I have the petition website link. I wore it to the Magic Kingdom Saturday and got a lot of responses, all positive. Some did not know about the petition. I told them to go to the website and sign it. I also designed a bumper sticker for my car. I am hoping these little things help. Who knows. I just feel better at least trying.

Award-winning author Peter David (http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/archives/006342.html#more) has a proposal to launch a Maps for AC campaign similar to the Nuts campaign that successfully convinced CBS to un-cancel Jericho.
From http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/archives/006342.html:I've decided that simply sending letters to save the Adventurers Club may not be enough. Previous letter campaigns to various companies have been more effective when there are visual aids accompanying them.
You see, to the best of anyone's knowledge, Robert Iger has never actually been to the Adventurers Club. Not once. In fact, for all we know, none of the decision makers have ever actually visited it, or have the faintest idea of the superb family entertainment it offers.
So here's what I intend to send Robert Iger, and I hope fellow supporters--or those who have not yet had the opportunity to enjoy the Club and want to have the opportunity to do so--will do this as well:
Maps
The concept ties into the Adventurers Club motto of "Up or down, north, south, east or west, an Adventurer's life is best." There is only one possible explanation for why key Disney executives have never gone to the Club: They have no idea where it is. So to be helpful, it behooves us to help them find it. Furthermore, we can underscore the notion that, for adventurers all over the country, or even the world, all roads lead to the Adventurers Club.
What I intend to do--and I hope others will follow my lead--is to pull out an old map, circle the town where I live, and then draw a path heading toward the Adventurers Club as far down as the map allows. That way, no matter where Bob Iger happens to be, he'll be able to pull out a map and find the general direction to go in order to find the Club.
I want to see Robert Iger's office flooded with maps. If nothing else, it's becoming obvious that Disney has lost its sense of direction, and as dedicated adventurers, we can do nothing less than help them find their way. In addition to whatever letter you wish to include talking about your experiences at the Club, be sure to write "Adventure Is In This Direction!" or "This Way to Adventure!" on the map. My further hope is that we can capture media attention with a dedicated map campaign. It's just different enough from your standard-issue letter-writing campaign.
I know there are all sorts of rumors about the Club winding up at other locations at Disney. My sources have indicated to me that that is all they are: Rumors. Nothing is settled. Nothing is definite. And from what I understand, if Disney is not made to realize what a terrific place the Club is and how worth saving it is, then rumors are all they will remain.
Send your maps to:

Feel free to crosspost this message to any boards. I will keep people apprised of any further developments.

I love it. When I ran into Bob Iger walking his son to the men's room at Jiko, I wish I had known then! I would have stopped him and mentioned it. But that was a good 8 months ago...oh well.
Can you imagine Bob Iger doing the "Long Thong Dance" with Willow Bay looking on?! :lmao:
