I'm thinking of booking a trip for January 17-24, 2009. We went in January of this year, but it ended up being during the week of the Marathon, so it was a bit more crowded than I was hoping it would be. Can anyone give me advice for the week of the 17-24.....any other events going on during that time? Thanks so much!

January 19th is Martin Luther King day and many people have a long weekend. I have heard that in the past it can be a busy weekend down there. But I think that there is always something going on at WDW. It it's not a holiday of some sort, there's a special activity. Disney is always doing something to draw crowds. I think you have to pick which activity will draw the fewest crowds. ;)

This past January we took our first trip in this month, 10 days before MLK day. We're fall people but we did go in late September and had AP's so decided to give January a shot to get another use out of our passes. Arriving day was real cold, steam coming off the pool, we stayed WL, but the water was like bath water. Next day temps soared back to the 80's, perfect weather, crowds were low and then marathon period came. It closed some routes around WDW, added quite a few more guests but all in all ,not to bad. Day before we were to leave, temp drops to the 60's, cold, glad we were leaving. All this said, would we go again in January, likely not, weather is just to iffy and we have enough cold and snow in Ohio in January, we look at Florida as the sunshine state and enjoy the heat so we'll skip the January WDW trip.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot that MLK day would fall during this time. Maybe I will shoot for the 24th-31st and hope for good weather. :)

We went for MLK Weekend in 08. I followed TGM's reccomendations on which park which day and wasn't bothered by crowds at all:cool1:

Every Martin Luther King Weekend Disney hosts the Universal Cheer and Dance Competition so there will be a billion college aged cheerleaders and dancers all over the place and forget about staying at an All-star resort they are up practicing ALL NIGHT!

Ok, thanks for the heads up on that Ladyandthetramp2. HAHA....my girls do competitive cheerleading. They won't be at that comp, but I definitely don't want to be there when all that is going on. I get enough of that as it is. The last week of January is sounding like a much better plan. ;)

Just wanted to throw out there, usually at the end of Jan. is Superbowl Sunday. I have no clue if Disney does anything during this or not. But I just wanted to let you know, and yes the reason I'm so aware of this is because sometimes Superbowl falls on my b-day.

Why not go to the www.disneyworld.com web site and look for the "special weeks" calendar? That will tell you which weeks aren't busy.
