I have never been able to use a code so am wondering how you do it. When you have a reservation already on the books and then you find a code for the same place or better do you cancel the existing reservation and make a new one with the code or do they apply the code to the existing reservation if possible ( if it is the same resort for example).

Never cancel a Disney reservation until you have a new one booked! Some codes can be used to modify the existing reservation while others require you to make a brand new reservation.
The best way to do this is to call as if you have no reservations and ask what's available using code XXX. If there's something there you can use, THEN tell the CM that you have an existing reservation and see if it can be applied to it. If it cannot be, then make the new reservation and ask if the deposit you paid can be transferred to the new one. If your new reservation stays with who made the original one (CRO to CRO or WDTC to WDTC) you can transfer the deposit. If it goes from one to the other, you will have to make a new deposit and they will refund your original deposit in the same form you made it.

Three letter codes are CRO codes. The four letter ones are WDTC codes. If you are using a three letter code, your AP reservation can be modified.
