This is a simple swap. For each group you're in, you will make an 8-inch title topper and one element choice.

The title topper should be 8 inches wide and at least 2 inches high, be double/triple matted, and contain no handwriting. Computer-generated, stickers, or die-cut is fine. Extra embellishments would be great!

The element is to be chosen from the list below:

Embellished Shapes: 3PP 1-1/2x1-1/2 or larger if you wish, double matted and embellished. These can be circles, squares, flowers, etc. be creative. If it is a shape that would not look right double matted please use your best judgement.....Just make up for it in another way. Maybe make a few extra or throw in something extra.

I just like the way it sounds. Topper'n'Tag. Topper'n'Element doesn't roll off my tongue as nicely.

You can make a Tag or any element you wish. [I don't like to be tied to just one thing]

Well flockkkkkk me, but can anyone tell/show me what a matchbook looks like? I think Im going to jump on this one but to be honest Im scared!
Do we just pick the section that we are interested in and let our hostess know? Buffy said that when I start I should post alot, you all are going to get sick of me!
Also, do we make exactly the same thing for eveyone in our group or can there be a little variance?
Im going to have 100 qs before I even get started!

Questions are good.

If you are thinking about Group 1 or 2 - you tell me the character you're going to do. A land group, you tell me which land you want. An attraction or restaurant, same thing, you tell me which one you will be doing. You do NOT have to tell me the element choice. Since each subject in the topics are different, even if we have 6 tags it'll be okay because you probably aren't going to use each subject on the same page. It'll get a flockin' crowded. :rotfl2:
Let me get my camera ready and I'll go photograph the matchbook I did and one that Buffy did.

Hooray!! A newbie!

Nope, can't help you with the matchbook, but I can with the other questions.

On the signup thread, read through the posts ahead of you to see what is already taken, and then state what you want. Like this:

I'd like spot in the character group. I'll do Marie from the Aristocats.
For the Studios grp, I'd like to do Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground.

The items are generally all the same. Say I run out of Navy blue brads, but a different color blue works too, this is okay. Or I buy a set of stickers that has Mickey and Minnie -- maybe half will have Mickey and the other half Minnie -- as long as the substitutions are comparable and in theme. If my theme was Mickey, I couldn't submit half the sets with Minnie. I also wouldn't use dimensional stickers on some, but flat ones on the others.

Does this help?

Buffy hand cut hers.
Mine I had a flip over card from Stampin'Up that I used as my base and then hand cut my inserts, stapled them inside and covered the staples with ribbon.

New Technique: Matchbook-style Scrapbook Journaling Boxes

How To Make Mini-books for Scrapbooking
by Rebecca Ludens

On my layout for the PS Scrapbook Page Challenge, I used mini-matchbook journaling boxes to hold five additional, small photos and matching journaling. These mini-books are both fun and easy to make. They can coordinate with any theme of scrapbook page simply by changing the colors of cardstock used to make them. They can hold photos, journaling, or even small memorabilia. Create larger matchbooks following these same directions and you can use them to make a themed mini-scrapbook. Make tiny matchbooks for holiday gift tags.

Click here to see the sample layout and use your browser back button to return to these steps to learn how to make your own matchbook journaling boxes.

Paper used in the sample shown here is from The Paper Loft.

Step 1) Cut a piece of double-sided cardstock into a long, thin rectangle. The paper used in this sample has boxes on it, making it easy to decide where to fold and cut. The width of the sample mini-matchbooks is 1 3/4".

Step 2) Fold up approximately 1/2" of the end of the strip.

Step 3) Decide how tall you want your matchbook to be and fold it again at the point. The sample is 2" tall.

Step 4) Matchbooks have some depth to them. To create the thickness, fold one more time just 1/8" from the last fold and then trim the remain strip so that it will just tuck inside the first fold. See photo below.

Step 5) Trim pieces of coordinating cardstock that will fit inside your matchbook to use for pages. You will want to limit a book this size to 3 or 4 pages so that a staple will be able to make it through the layers.

Step 6) Insert the pages and staple in the center of the bottom fold as shown.

Step 7) The cover should be able to fold down and be tucked into the bottom flap. If needed, trim the cover slightly so that it just tucks in and stays without bowing outward.

Step 8) Add journaling and photos to the inside of the book and attach to your layout.

Step 9) Embellish the cover as desired.

Tip: To place this page in a page protector, you will want to use a craft knife to carefully cut away the protector around the matchbook so that readers can access the inside of the book without removing the page from the protector.

Mine was meant to stand alone. Those came from the paint can swap. I basically cut the out side piece big enough to fold in 1/2 and have the matchbook flap on the bottom. Then I cut inserts to fit inside the cover. Clear as mud right? Let me see if I can find mine.

The trick is to not get them too thick, or they are hard to staple. I stapled the bottom of the inserts together.

Isn't there some Cricut carts that have matchbooks?

'K I'll bite, why are the fish going from the tank to the pond...were they bad?

AlexWyattMommy
06-22-2008, 05:32 PM
Bad, bad fish. The largest, a 7 inch goldfish, had a bad habit of splashing water out of the tank. :rotfl2: Just kidding. The tank was getting really bad. There was this weird, hard scaley stuff growing on the lids. And I mean growing. Not just being splashed on and calcium drying on the bottom, it was growing up through the cracks in the lid. ICK!!

The fish came from the pond. The old pond. We put $0.12 feeder fish in it one year and some died but others thrived. So much that they had baby goldfish in the pond. The plan was to just replace the fish every year since they wouldn't survive the winter. But when they went and starting having babies, well, we had to save them. Then the pond sprung a leak or just wasn't put in right, and we didn't put them back in that spring. They've been here for THREE years. It was time to put them back outside. I was also tired of cleaning the tank and feeding fish that weren't mine. I'd rather have a rat. ;)

AlexWyattMommy
06-22-2008, 05:33 PM
Bleach and CLR didn't kill that scaley stuff. Scrubbing with an SOS pad, a hard wire brush and soaking it in vinager didn't take it off. I gave up.

BernardandMissBianca
06-22-2008, 06:42 PM
Make sure you get a pond heater for winter or you will have fish sticks. LOL

AlexWyattMommy
06-22-2008, 06:47 PM

not a clue, but you only need to run it when the temps go below freezing.

AlexWyattMommy
06-22-2008, 07:03 PM
Guess I'll be googling to get an idea. Maybe if the initial outlay isn't too much, I can ask for the upkeep to be a Christmas present. I really don't think I could handle disposable fish.

TinkerBean
06-22-2008, 07:11 PM
I think it's pretty much just like the little heaters that they have for bird baths...It just keeps the water above freezing, that's all they really need. How big is the pond?

OT - We had a friend whose Koi kept disappearing from his pond. Everytime he'd restock it they would be gone within a week or so. Turns out he was providing Sushi for the racoons.:rotfl2:

AlexWyattMommy
06-22-2008, 07:24 PM
We put a rock over some bricks in the middle of the deep section for the fish to hide under. Also give them some shade until I get plants in there. That's tomorrow's mission. Buy water plants.

It is a 100 gallon preformed hard sided pond.

If the group has 6 people, you make 6 requirements. You will get one of your own and five different ones back. This way the hostess can just make sure that everyone has the same combination of six baggies for each group when sending them back.

Yes. The matchbooks really are that simple. If you make it large enough to hold a wallet sized photo, you only have to make one per person. If you make it smaller, than there must TWO per person. I always put in at least 5 to 7 pages, but the requirements have stated that there be at least one insert page. To me that just isn't enough, but I'm an over achiever that way.

It all depends upon the sticker. If you are using the ones that are small [1/4" or smaller] and come in a bag, no. If you are using quality stickers, like EK Success, Jolee's, CM or even some of the nicer Sandy Lions, I don't mind them. The dimensional stickers are very okay. And as long as the flat sticker isn't your only embellishment, I will allow them for this swap. Remember, each swap will have different requirements. Both in quantity that needs to be made and what level of embellishment is needed.

Rita you can definitely run things by me, that's what we are here for! But I will be gone from July 2 - 6. I should have internet access but we will be busy with Car stuff so I can't guarantee when I will check in. You can also ask any of the girls, including PrincessNancy96, AlexWyattMommy, SusieStone, they will all help!

Your DD can absolutely help! The more the merrier. And yes we obsess! LOL I dream about swaps, Nancy will have ideas pop in her head in the middle of the night. Carry a notebook with you always!

Hey Kellie, welcome to the swaps! If you can't be here the day of signups you can either PM your hostess and ask her to hold a spot or ask another swapper to sign up for you. If you would like I can sign up on your behalf, just make sure you check in with AWM as soon as you can. So you want Mickey in group 1?

After the "special requests," part of the surprise swap, I've started making extras of things, paper piecings especially. I have been hoping for the last, oh, six months :rotfl2: of getting my swaps cleared out so I could

1. update my blog with new pieces
2. post things that I have already made on the Pass it Forward thread
3. take more requests, because I think I have to go on swap hiatus because it's going to be busy for me in Aug/Sept, but making more of things I've already done I can do.

I just went back and checked...her boys were the darn reason I made the Buzz in the first place!

my first idea, two different characters from the same movie, I was going to do one for each group. Then I decided that they really should go together. I also figured that AWM's boys might have a problem with them, so for my second idea, I am doing something definitely more for boys.

K So I feel the need to contribute!

Welcome newbies!!!!!

If anyone is worried about what they are making I would be happy to look for pictures from my first swap that included the most ginormous photo mats and tags you have ever seen!!!!:rotfl: I did them totally by hand since I had almost no tools (My 'scrapbooking' skills a year and a few months ago consisted of putting Disney pics on mat stacks and putting them on fun disney paper with some stickers). I think a 4x6 picture would have fit on the tag (it said LARGE right?) and I think I added almost an inch to each mat over the 4x6 one so you can only imagine how BIG they were!

Anwyay, these lovely ladies were a wealth of information and no one will ever get upset if you ask questions!

As a recent hostess here's my advice - don't do more than you can truly handle within the due dates (although true newbies are usually very anxious and get done fast!) and if you aren't sure about something, post or PM the hostess to see what's ok and what isn't. The guidelines are there to make sure that the playing field is even - so that when Hope makes an elaborate & amazing (wait till you see her stuff) paper piecing, she gets back quality pieces that have equal love and work put into them. Not to pick on Hope but it was a good example! That doesn't mean that anyone should be intimidated by others who can do great paper piecings or matchbooks, or whatever - we all have different strengths and that's what makes the swaps so great!

I would also be happy to answer any newbie questions and I will be signing up for this swap, since, did I mention - I'm done all my other ones!!!!! (And will have the quote swap out the door this weekend).

Ok - I'm done being inspired. I'm tired.

I don't even have a shortcut for Missesdisney!

And I'm not sure it's not supposed to be Missusdisney since it was supposed to be Mrs. spelled out. DH came up with it.

I am always missing Disney so it's appropriate anyway.

Cute story - this is what happens when you are married to a techie (for fifteen years today!) My husband has the nickname of misternascar. So for Christmas a few years ago he bought me a domain as a stocking stuffer - missesdisney (my personal email has this extension). The intention was mrs spelled out like mr in misternascar. Of course it never occurred to either of us (and probably still doesn't to him) that mrs spelled out is missus - and it doesn't look as cute anyway so it works either way for me!

Aw that is a cute story...Nothing says romantic like getting your own domain name. Oh and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

My hubby is a techie too (or as I call him Nerd with a capital "N") He is "Director of Internet Web Technologies" for a large Mutual Fund company. I keep telling him he should just change his title to "Chief Nerd" so much easier to say and people will then actually understand what he does:lmao:

I like Chief Nerd. I am a pseudo-tech type now - been doing software consulting for years but not like him techie. When I need help I call him and ask him to check with his 'chiphead friends' at work:rotfl2:

OK, I may have you beat, my Dh was a tech manager for students at our local community colleges, started his own business connecting libraries together (sold recently to OCLC , Ohio) and during all this time got his masters in library science. Remeber Happy Days? Potsie wasnt a "Nerd" to Joanie, he was her DREN!
Gotta love our nerds!

I don't know, my DH might give all of yours a run for the title of Chief Nerd. He's a chemical engineer with a master's degree in electrical engineering, pursuing a PhD in biochemical engineering:).

I am SO glad someone asked AWM what her name is! We're riding to the Cape May breakfast together in August and I had visions of saying, "Hi, AWM, nice to meet you. What is your name?" LOL

Rita, there is another scrapper on the board (although she is recovering from a car accident) and she lives in El Mirage. Had we known about you earlier, we would have invited you to our crops.

DH and I lived in Scottsdale for almost 5 years. I loved it, heat and all, but DH said "No more summers." so we are in Colorado.

On the nerd side, I am married to a software QA engineer with a degree in Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering. But it's okay, I understand him, because I have an AA Engr degree too. Not that I do anything with it. But we both have buttons that say, "Yes, I am a rocket scientist." It's fun at times, because we've replied to people saying, "It's not like it's rocket science." with "Good, because I've already done that." And then their mouths drop and they don't know what to say. Is that mean?

And happy anniversary missesdisney!

Information Security software to be exact. Being on the West Coast, Rita you might know the name of the company he works for. All with no degree too, he's a high school drop out. DH is one of the most sought after "techies" in his line of work.

Other jobs he's had. Mechanic, tree feller (cut's down trees for a living), sailor, ummm I think that's it.

Sorry bragging here, I'll stop now.

My DH is completely untechie - but he's finally got used to being addressed as DH:lmao: DS(14) picked up the phone the other day and said "Dad says to tell you there's someone called BH on the phone" - I think I need a proper secretary or DH needs elocution lessons:rotfl: DS(8) totally gets our names and is always asking after Mickeyteacher and AWM etc. He can't wait to find out who he will be getting swaps from and when I (grudgingly!) let him have a swap piece for his books he always checks who made it and asks me how they did it.::yes::

Oh, and for first pieces, my photomats were MASSIVE - it was for a resort swap (Coronado Springs) and I'd specially bought CM photo mats in a colour range I thought would go, stuck them onto great big bits of "toning" CM paper and embellished in true CM style by cutting contrasting wavy strips and weaving them together down one side. Add a tiny photo of the resort and voila!:scared1:

Hey Rita, when AWM posts a prototype thread just post a pic here. Do you have a photobucket account? If you don't, email me or AWM with a pic and we'll post it for you.
I should have my computer with me so I will check in at night. I leave on Wed afternoon and I'll be home on Sunday, but then I have to take DH to the airport so I won't be home til late.

DH drives a 1966 Austin Mini and we are in a car club, that has a big meet every summer with all the other East Coast Mini clubs. This summer it's our clubs turn to host. Every 5 years we have an East meets West meet where all the clubs get together.

cover your eyes girls!! I'm posting pics again! LOL This is Stitch!

It is the same requirements as the adults. I am just letting them pick anything Disney that they want. They can do character/food/attraction or ride/park specific or just general.

I don't want to put an age restriction on this. Like my 5 year old, no way. He means well, but he hasn't mastered cutting straight or lining up AND won't let me help. My 10 year old could swap with us adults and the only way you would know he was a kid is I told you. Each of us knows our own children best. If you know yours will do fine, sign them up. We aren't expecting perfection, and I'm not the glitter police.
I will add more groups for the children if we need them. I will fill in any open spots so that every child will get back 5 new and 1 of their own.
