I had fun taking photos of the details all around Disneyland. This was taken just before you exit the castle as you enter Fantasyland.

I know ths is from a long time ago and I'm reading through the thread as I go along, but did you realize this is the back of a clock? On the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour, the guide told us that the clock is permanently set to a few minutes after 4pm, the time when the kids came rushing through the castle when DLR opened.
;) I'll post a pic of the other side if I don't see one when I'm done reading and looking through this amazing thread! I just go back and I want to add some pictures. ;)

love it, eym! I loved that little model but in no way could I get a shot of anything in it that turned out that good!
Sherry,
I think it's the model inside the waiting room/lobby of the Steve Martin and Donald Duck movie (which used to be Great Moments with Mr Lincoln?) on Main Street... I think the movie is called "The First 50 Magical Years." Not positive but it's close to that. There are lots of really fun things to see in there.

I will have to check it out next time (hopefully December). See that is one of the things that we skipped or didn't have time for in October. I think that the time we spent in the parks was not enough, and my friends are usually not open-minded enough to just go exploring to find little hidden gems in places we didn't expect - they usually dismiss things as being uninteresting before we have even checked them out! I always have to try to pull rank, but I end up giving in or compromising too much. I MUST make a solo trip soon!

Sherry you must check out the Fifty First Years show. We watch it everytime. I love it. It's a great way to get away from the crowds and I could just wander in the lobby and look at everything. It's really neat!

I am going to make a point of it next time (hopefully in December)! Even if I go in and see it alone and meet up with the friends later, that will be fine. As long as I see it! I guess there just wasn't enough time on the last trip.

I believe it's inside the opera house where they are currently running the 50 first magical years or somesuch. Right as you walk into the park on the right, just past AP services.

Thank you!! We got lucky (or unlucky) because they were filming resort footage by helicopter when we were there, so no one could go over the bridge to the castle so we got some awesome pictures infront of it and on the side!

I know it isn't the same, but there was an excellent DVD set from Walt Disney Treasures last year called "Disneyland: Secrets, Stories, & Magic" that featured two discs, including an all-new documentary, that had tons of little-known facts and neat stories. It also has a trivia game, a an audio commentary by Tony Baxter, and a few Disneyland TV episodes. It's really neat and very cool for Disney fans. :thumbsup2

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I was wondering if any of you photographers out there has a good picture (or pictures) of the Dumbo ride. DS3 absolutely loved that ride and he is a bit delayed in some areas, including his speech so he is unable to talk to us about what he thought about it. Anyway, I wanted to put some pictures in a book for him so we can talk to him about the rides he liked. I've found some pictures on the internet but I can't find a good dumbo picture that is big enough to print at a decent size.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this. :goodvibes

ScrapperKimmy - I would guess that photo was taken in the Beast's Library in the Animation Building of DCA. I could be wrong, though.
Lavender Peach - did you ever get one of those diecast Dumbos from the Attraction/Theme Park Collection that used to be sold in DLR? That would be a good and inexpensive souvenir for your son to have, as it is a mini version of the ride vehicle!!!

Sherry, no I didn't get that. I've never seen them. It sounds cute but it sounds like they aren't available anymore? PinkBudgie got DS some of the plastic figures of the fab 5 for his birthday and i made him a book with pictures of different characters but I thought pictures of the actual rides (now that he knows what they are) would be helpful in encouraging him to talk and let us know what he likes.
By the way, I've been lurking some more on the photopass thread. I know that i won't be able to resist the photographers the next time we go. If I end up buying a photopass cd I will blame it all on you. ;)

Those Dumbo diecast vehicles are probably not sold anymore throughout the parks - sometimes WDW will still carry something that can be ordered through their mail order, but I think it is probably gone. However, I have recently seen it on Ebay, and it was still reasonably priced (under $12)!!
Anyway, in the meantime, I think the book/pictures of Dumbo and the other rides, etc. sounds wonderful for your son, and I hope one of the talented photographers on this thread comes through for you with some awesome pictures!!!:goodvibes

:goodvibes

I LOVE all those villains' hands in World of Disney! That is one of those 'pure Disney' things that they do with details - little bits of magic in places people would not be inclined to look. It is easy to skip over those hands the first time you go into WOD, but it is cool when you finally see them and can identify the different villains! I would be willing to bet a lot of folks still have not seem them!

Ok, I'll bite.........Huh? :)
I think it's a reference to when Walt was playing around with the castle model, he felt the front of the castle was too menacing, so they turned it around and Walt liked it much better. And thus the front of the castle(pink part here) became the backside of the castle. That part is very similar to Neuschwanstein Castle.

Ok, I'll bite.........Huh? :)
One story goes like this: When the imagineers who were building Disneyland were looking at the mockup for the castle, they turned the top of the castle backwards in the model. When Walt returned, he said that the castle looked great, so it stayed as is.
The other story I've heard is that Walt liked it better backwards so he asked that it stayed that way.
Chances are it's a conglomeration of the two stories; that they turned it backwards, Walt liked it, was notified it was backwards, and still liked it...
So backwards it stayed. ;) The stone is right side out, the pink is back side out.
I have heard versions of this story before, but it was reiterated to me during the Walk In Walt's Footsteps tour.
Has anybody heard a different version?
Sleepless Knight
11-25-2008, 06:01 PM
Another version is that they quickly put the top back on "backwards" when Walt came in and he noticed it. As he looked at it, he decided that he liked it better. It really does look less menacing that way.
And great pictures everyone. I really need to visit this thread more often.

Another thing that is so great about the detail around and under the Castle area is the brickwork! I like that the bricks are lightly tinted purplish-blue and some are pink, carefully alternated in color for effect. It must have taken forever to build that and get those bricks just so! I don't think I had noticed that the bricks were alternating in color like that before, but I could see it in the photo! I bet Walt Disney had it strategically drawn out which color bricks would go where for the best effect from a distance and up close!

That's the version I've heard. It's also the one that's told in the new book The Imagineering Field Guide to Disneyland - according to that, it was Imagineer Herb Ryman (who is also responsible for creating the first bird's-eye-view of Disneyland) who flipped it backwards just before Walt walked in.
I'm not sure which version is true, though . . . I didn't know there could be so many alterations of a different "Disney myth"!

I didn't know there could be so many alterations of a different "Disney myth"! I think it's more likely that the Herb Ryman putting the spire on right before Walt walked in is correct and that multiple versions have arisen because the story got misquoted over the years. We do know that Walt deliberately wanted a smaller castle because he wanted it to be more intimate, so this story fits with that very well.

Maybe I should convince some forest animals to steal my coat and take it to a beautiful princess walking in the forest. Hmm, that may work:)

dear nostagicdad...that's an accurate "name" for you. :thumbsup2
..when i need to "feel"..the disney spirit, this is a great place to
visit when one is not @ the parks. alot of your pictures not only
capture the disney magic, they are also "classics", by my enjoyment.
...i need the "advances"..of the new cameras. [ i have never seen
thru the "viewfinder"...to produced the desire results in many cases.
:rolleyes1 ]. so what i go for..are pictures...going for the feelings.
back..in 99, i wanted to get my family first ride down splash. however,
...one can't "see"..who's in the log, until they 're heading half-way
down. ( which i think..was done...on purpose)....so with my old-point
& shoot camera...i just went, when i thought..they should be, & darn
it!, :yay: ...it was them. * but i didn't kno..until..we got the film
developed..a month later.
people pictures...to me, are what they think disney is. it's fascinating
"seeing " all the diffenent point of "views."
one of the "fun" thing...i like to do..on our trips, is to take pictures of
disney's decorations.., to me are works of art....& "contains" alot
of the history....from all the things....our family think of disney's
...movies.
..*on another site..someone was asking about the meaning for life.
...disney...has been part of our family traditions..starting with kids.

I absolutely love this thread. And Nostalgic dad i've used a few photos for back drops on my computer. Normally when i come to this thread im happy and i want to see the disney magic. This time i guess i'm a little sad. The twins just told me they don't want to go to Disneyland with the rest of the family on Tuesday Dec 9th. They just turned 13 and are in the rebellious stage and i guess have " outgrown" Disney. I am so appauled and sad, and i'm done calling them all sorts of ungrateful son of a guns but my DH is right not everyone feels the same way I do about Disney. Anywho i camed to this thread to cheer me up and it sure did. sorry to rant in the pictures thread...
