Take a ride on the Mark Twain, along the Rivers of America, and you will see that train.

Thanks. It was pretty funny. She was about to sign some autographs but spotted some cotton candy on the ground. She held up her hand as if saying wait a minute, walked behind the popcorn kiosk and pulled out the broom/pan and proceeded to clean up the mess. :)

What time of the night did you get this photo? It is perfect, and it is nearly impossible to get that angle of that shot during the day, when they are people climbing in and out of the letters and getting in the way. That is what I want to do - go to the entrance super early or super late and snap pictures when nobody is around!

This was taken at about 12:20am. I still had one heck of a time getting a shot off without someone in it, though. It took a while but I finally managed to get one off just as a guy was walking into the frame on the right side. :)

Really? Even at that late hour there were still people in the way? I guess they were pouring out of DL once it closed at midnight? Well, any great photographer such as yourself knows that patience is a virtue and sometimes you have to wait for hours, or climb up and over some treacherous terrain, wake up in the middle of the night, stand out in the freezing cold and endure all kinds of other abnormal circumstances just to get one great shot! But I know that I - and the others on this board - really appreciate the results of your efforts, and love to look at your beautiful pictures!!

Those are very kind words, indeed. I definitely appreciate it. You are absolutely correct about enduring obstacles to get "that" shot. If I remember correctly, I was in need of a restroom quite badly for this one! :scared1:
I remember thinking to myself........I can't give up. I must get this shot for the DISboard! (I am just kidding here. ;) ) Thanks again!

Yes, that is an accomplishment - and so rare at DLR! You got the DCA sign and the Golden Gate Bridge and the mountain and Sun in the photo, so that kind of sums up DCA all in one picture!

You are right! I had the Sun Wheel on the brain because of the thread about it closing soon, so I inadvertently said 'wheel'! In any case, I think the visual idea when you look at DCA from that vantage point is to see the sun along with Grizzly Peak and the bridge and all the symbols of California in one whole picture so it was nice to get it in that photo!

Amazing shot once again Danny !!!
I know I've asked this before, but what were the settings you used ?
I only have my 18-55 mm zoom and I'm a little worried because of the f stop; it only goes down to 3.5. Should I be okay with taking firework pics with the lens I have ?

I recognize that Vampire Mickey sculpture - I bought one last year (along with several other Halloween tchothckes that I don't really need)! What a festive picture - is it from this year or last year? Those Mickeys and Minnies at the top of the picture look EXACTLY like the Mick-o-Lanterns that are stuck in the tops of the pumpkin muffins sold in Blue Ribbon Bakery - mine lost an ear, so I will have to get another one this trip.

Oooohhh.... Okay. I thought those Mickey and Minnie jack-o-lantern sculptures at the top looked new. I mean, they look like what is stuck in the muffins but I don't recall seeing those specific sculptures sold last year. They had different M&M jack-o-lanterns last year, but not these exact ones, I don't think. Well, now I know what I have to look out for when I get there in a couple of weeks. I want something that is going to remind me of the muffin Mickey but that is NOT made of sugar!

Thanks a bunch wazowskiLOVER! You should be just fine with the 18-55mm lens. If you are using a tripod, no need to worry about a really low f/stop. If you are going hand-held then sure, you will need the lowest aperture possible as well as bumping up your ISO. I'd really recommend using a tripod, trashcan, railing, etc to stabilize your camera, though. The EXIF for this shot is below. As you can see, this exposure is a little over 1 second in duration. Let me know if I can answer anything else.
NIKON D80
Exposure Time 1.4s (14/10)
Aperture f/11.0
ISO100
Focal Length 24mm (36mm 35mm)

Love this picture. I have a quick question about this, was it intentional for that one statue to be broken? Or was it simply broken and left that way? I have always wondered and figured someone here might know! :confused3

Does everybody know that the singing head second from left is modeled after a gentleman named Thurl Ravenscroft (great name, huh?) who is no longer with us, but is famous for doing the voice of Tony the Tiger - "They're grrrrrrrrrrrreatttt!"? Thurl also did many other voices for Disney - he is one of the Tiki Room voices, but I cannot recall which one and he was one of the Bears in the CB Jamboree, and other various character voices. He was also very active in the Laguna Pageant of the Masters down here in SoCal, but I was familiar with Thurl at the tiny church in Hollywood that I went to every Sunday as a child. Thurl was part of a wacky singing group from the deep south called the Goose Creek Quartet, and they were a big part of the history of the Church, which was called the Little Country Church of Hollywood, and it had beautiful gardens and grounds all the way up until it burned to the ground (arson, I think) a year or two ago. Thurl had passed away a while before the Country Church burnt down, but I recall as a kid, it was always a big deal when all the members of the Goose Creek Quartet were going to sing in church that day. Somehow, someone from Disney heard Thurl's booming bass voice and he did voice work - and lived quite well from it - for the rest of his life, as well as became a permanent part of the Haunted Mansion because his 'head' will 'live on' forever!!

Thurl was also a very tall man - which sort of fits with the deep voice. But you would never know it from looking at that detached head! I wish I could remember who he is in the Tiki Room. Pretty much anything Disney did that needed a deep voice for up until the '90s or so, I think he was called upon for or did, until he just couldn't do it anymore. I remember the Church people used to tell me as a kid, "Thurl is [such and such voice] on [such and such ride]" and run down the list of them and I only retained the HM one in memory because the head went along with it! But I think he probably made BIG bucks for doing the Tony the Tiger voice because...who doesn't know Tony the Tiger? Frosted Flakes is one of the most popular cereals around and those commercials were famous.

Well, we all love your photos so much, Danny, so I am pleased if I can contribute just a little bit to the thread with Disney-related trivia or lore, to complement or accompany one of your beautiful pictures! And I wanted to make sure everyone knew of Thurl Ravenscroft, because he was so integral to Disney and Disneyland, and pop culture in general (because of his voice work for Kellogg's and other notable companies), but very few people knew of him!!

I was watching a special on the Travel Channel the other day about "Extreme Thrill Rides" or something, and they showed some things that I can not understand how anyone goes on! Terrifying!

You are right! I had forgotten about that completely! I had totally blanked out on which voices/characters he did in the Tiki Room and CBJ, so I was glad that Greg posted that link of the interview so we could see it. Thurl did something in Pirates too but whatever it was, it wasn't as noticeable because there are so many pirates on that ride, there isn't really one voice that stands out other than the 'Dead men tell no tales' dude. And Thurl was also in America Sings somewhere.

I agree! It is a very nice, witty and bright bunch of people on this board (and talented, too, as evidenced by this specific thread)! Everyone not only has little stories like the Thurl Ravenscroft story to share, but valuable tips and bits of wisdom that can help other people plan their trips to DLR or other Disney parks. I always say that, no matter how many times any of us have been to DLR or how much we think we know about it, there is always some little nugget of info that someone else on DISboards will have to share that we didn't previously know! There is always some detail that has yet to be discovered or some person who has done, eaten or seen something that the rest of us have not yet come across, and so DISboards is a never-ending source of knowledge as well as just being a fun place to hang out and chat with people who are on the same page!:goodvibes

I was thinking it's a little wide for the American River. It could be the Truckee River too. The trees also look like the type that grow in the Russian Rver area.

Too bad it's a housing track now, but that still made me excited!!!! :yay:

Yeah it makes me sad too. And I'm only 21 and I remember so many fields surrounding our city. My parents have lived here their whole lives and Oxnard/Camarillo used to be FULL of fields with everything avocados, strawberries, lima beans, oranges you name it, and even though we do have quiet a bit of fields left, everything has become housing tracks... It's sad... :confused3

When I lived in Cali (Cypress) back in the early 80's there was a great strawberry field not 2 blocks from my house that had a little stand that we used to visit every couple of weeks. I drove by there a couple of years ago and there was a Costco where the field was! Yea they sell strawberries, but not quite the same!

That sounds like Fairfield. This is still a valley filled with produce but so much of it is gone for houses and grapes for wine. And industry. We have Budweiser, Jelly Belly, Ball-Metal, and Amcor PET packaging just to name a few. All of that is good for the job market but so bad in so many others.

ok...I was wrong:rolleyes1
this is from Wikipedia
------------------------------------------------
San Francisco
Disney had to get special permission from the state of California in order to fly the helicopter over the Golden Gate Bridge.[citation needed]
Redwood Creek
It is illegal to fly a helicopter over Redwood Creek. Disney had to pay a fee in order to film this scene.[citation needed]
Monterey Bay
Sea lions can be heard, but not seen while flying over Monterrey Bay.
Lake Tahoe
When the flight passes the top of the mountain, we see a sea of clouds on the other side. Due to weather conditions and budget limitations, Disney was unable to film a clear picture of Lake Tahoe.[citation needed]
Yosemite
Disney had to get Congressional approval to fly a helicopter in Yosemite Valley. Also, the hang glider is computer generated because it would have been unsafe to fly a hang glider that close to a helicopter.[citation needed]
Palm Springs
The computer generated golf ball features one of the attraction's hidden Mickeys. The ball is rumored to have been hit by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, though it is hard to tell because of the camera angle.[citation needed]
Camarillo
The "orange" trees in this scene are actually avocado trees.[citation needed] The field filmed in this scene was demolished and turned into housing tract in 2002.[citation needed]
Anza-Borrego
The horseback riders are riding to the edge of a cliff.
San Diego
At the very beginning of this scene, you can see the shadow of the helicopter on the side of the aircraft carrier. The number on the carrier deck, 74, identifies the carrier as the USS John C. Stennis.
Malibu
In this scene, a "sea air" scent is injected into the air.
Los Angeles
This scene is exceptionally fast because Disney illegally flew over downtown Los Angeles. They had only one attempt, hence the dizzying film in this sequence.[citation needed]
Disneyland
At the time of filming, Disneyland was closed to the public for a Cast Member Christmas party. The Christmas Fantasy Parade is halted so that the helicopter could make several passes over the park. Disney's California Adventure was being constructed at the time, so that area is completely dark. The final hidden Mickey of the attraction can be observed in the fireworks at the end of the scene.

I know what you mean...I grew up in Garden Grove just down the street from Disneyland... Strawberry fields were everywhere, and nothing compares to fresh California Strawberries... almost all the fields are gone just like all the Orange Groves that used to be there:sad2: ... I remember in the late 80's or early 90's Disney bought one of the strawberry fields on Harbor Blvd, to use as a future parking lot, but they let the original owners continue to grow their strawberries for many years after they bought it

Redwood Creek is a short but significant stream in Marin County, California. It drains a 7-square mile (18 km²) watershed which includes the Muir Woods National Monument, and reaches the Pacific Ocean north of the Golden Gate at Muir Beach. It provides a critical spawning and rearing habitat for coho salmon, coastal cutthroat and steelhead trout, both of them threatened species.

That is why it looks so much like the Russian River. The Russian River is in Sonoma County just right up the coast.

 Strawberries from Costco are not the same as fresh field strawberries!!! And what's funny too is that our city (Oxnard) is Strawberry Capital of the World and the strawberries they sell in all the stores here are from everywhere else buy Oxnard! Go figure!!!

Nope, they've been around for little while now. I think maybe at least a couple of years. You might also see their name spelled "Daddy-O's". The last couple of times I've seen them was in DCA near the Animation Building. One of those times, Snow White was with them and dancing along. They sing A Capella, doo-wop sort of stuff. It's really entertaining and great crowd interaction. I've heard they've also made appearances in NOS in DL but I've never seen them there.

Yup, as you can tell I have never ridden Heimlick, either! (TOO HOT that day!)
But yes, I meant the Casey Jr Circus train at DL. What I meant was... I noticed that I had forgotten that over on TSI that you could see across to Splash in the tunnel.. something you can't see unless you're on the island. Come to think of it... I don't think I had been to TSI since Splash Mt was put in! :scared: !!! Anyway, since I never ride the circus train, are there any hidden things that only the people on the train get to see??
Thanks!

...exactly! They used to sing in NOS before moving over to DCA a few years ago. I was told in DCA's Guest Relations that they're pretty much scheduled for weekdays only, so I never see them. The last time I checked, they were working on Wednesdays and Thursdays and that's it. Due to my work schedule, I can only get to the park on weekends, so it's been several years since I last saw them perform. Thanks again for posting that photo!

Danny, I love that shot of the Delta Daddios! It's so rare to see them in pictures...
Thanks a bunch Armadillo4! I know that every time I've seen them, I've had to just stop and listen. The picture I posted was when I was actually sitting on a bench and I saw them walking my direction from way over near Monsters, Inc. I knew I wasn't going anywhere and they ended up right where I was at near the Animation Building. They are really great.
Oh, and that is a fantastic shot (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3266/2913091147_1ea72fbefe_b.jpg)of Aladdin and Magic Carpet!

These guys are awesome! We saw them in August and they encouraged my DD to come up and have a picture with them while they were singing.

IASWAM: thanks for posting your DD's photo with the Delta Daddios too! The more photos of them, the better. I think I need to play hookie from work one day to try to catch them in the park.

travelmel,
You asked if there are things that you could only see from the "Casey Jr. Circus Train". I suppose you have been on the "Storybook Land Canal Boats".
They travel around the same displays but you do get a different view from the train than from the boats...for example
This photo is from the Boat...looking at the fairytale castle on the hill...

While this photo is from the train, you can see details that you can't from the Canal boats.

I love the little details in this area. Did you notice the "Pumpkin Coach"?
Here is a different view of the Matterhorn from the Casey Jr Circus Train

Looking thru my photo's on the computer, I just couldn't explain what I meant in just one photo. :dance3:

diznylnd.......Cool shot there (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/diznylnd/IMG_2009.jpg). I like the lighting effects and I've never seen them in person. Makes for an even creepier feeling, especially with that cloudy sky. :thumbsup2

Is the pumpkin coach only viewable from the train? Seems like my DD's pointed it out to me on our last Storybook canal ride but maybe not. I love that ride, it is one of my favorites!
Thanks for the views from the train That is exactly what I was asking for :goodvibes

I'm guessing he slowed down the shutter speed and one of his kids ran through with a lit up toy ? ;)

wazowskiLOVER is right with the exception of it being one of my kids. They were in another area of the park while I was doing my thing taking night shots. There was no one around as this was taken right at midnight. But during the 18 second exposure, a kid walked right through the frame with one of those toys. At first I thought, well, that shot's ruined. But, then I realized that it would probably turn out pretty cool. And, as you can tell, the shutter closed before he made it all the way across. ;) Plus, I was still able to get another shot without that as well.
That's a cool photo. :thumbsup2
Thanks Robert TG!

Pictures from F! water/lighting effects don't typically look that great since they seem out of focus. I have tons of them but none of them really jump out at me. I thought I'd share one anyway just so I could say I've posted one. ;)

Note that there was no issue of the boat getting stuck due to excessive weight, as I was the only passenger when I took this shot:

Armadillo4,
That was a great Indiana Jones shot! I didn't see any action this summer and that's actually the first photo evidence I've ever seen of the summer of Indiana Jones stuff. THanks!

Wow - a lot of new and amazing stuff has been posted by everybody!
