View Full Version : I'm Sorry...It Must Be Said...I just don't get the obsession with TWILIGHT?

I wikipedia-ed it. It sounds freaky and disturbing.
Vampires and blood and evil spirits and people who can never be together?
I understand that whole "unconditional love" but "Edward finds her so beautiful he nearly wants to slaughter her at first." WHAT?
Sorry guys, just too unusual for me.
I usually understand when this kind of stuff gets a certain amount of following, but this phenomena...this movie and insane amounts of bumper stickers and DIS discussion...I just don't understand!

amen.

i mean, i can dig a dark story and such.

it's just...

its a little too teeny-bopper - ish to me.

not to sound mean, but to me it's a "been there done that" story line.

but hey, it's just like harry potter. the obsession with that still makes me wonder.

i hate the whole thing. i've read all the books (thinking maybe i'd 'get it' if i read them)
i don't.

the books aren't even that good. i couldn't connect with any of the characters, and i had a deep dislike for every one of them.

hon, i was describing the obsession with it.

i know that twilight and harry potter dont have the same sort of story line (besides magical teenagers that fall in and out of love).

the obsession with something that literally makes people that read actual horror/dark/love stories laugh is what i don't understand.

The reason you don't comprehend it at all is because you have never read the books. If you read it, I can't guarantee you'll like it, but I am almost positive you would be less creeped out.

I thought the preface was creepy when I read it at the bookstore so I left the book. I went to pick it up a week later and read the books and loved it.

I'll admit, even though I like the books, I don't get it either.
I don't know why I like them.
I know that the writing is somewhat awful (my friend has reread the books like a thousand times out of boredom and she started pointing things out to me...), I really dislike the main character, and Edward kind of talks like a book sometimes (this bugs me a lot, he'll talk like he was dictating a novel to a stenographer) and the main plot annoys me. The whole OMG VAMPIRES ARE CHASING ME annoys me.

So, I have no idea why I even like these books or read them. But I do, but it's mostly only to read about Bella & Edward's relationship...

I cant stand them

I tried reading them, with the same reason as Shelby, but I couldnt get hooked, infact it just makes me STRONGLY dislike them that much more.

The Clique is horrible.
I own two of the books because my mother bought them for me at Xmas because she wasn't sure what kind of book to buy.
They're extremely teeny bopper, use really stupid terms and act a lot stupider than anyone would have in grade seven.
And totally unrealistic.

But I totally love Harry Potter, always have, always will.

The first time I heard about these books I was like...yeah ok and thought they sounded so dumb.
Then I actually read one and got hooked.
Reading a description on wikipedia fails to do the book justice (I think it sounds stupid too on there)

weird? ....different? something that i just cannot understand the obsession with. Just not something I'm into.

obviously different strokes for different folks though...i mean i have a strange obsession with TITANIC, I'm sure most people don't understand THAT. ;)

also...the movie looks pretty brutal.
anything with 1) Robert Pattinson WITHOUT a british accent
and 2) Suzy Crabgrass from Neds Declassified SChool Survival Guide
is a no-go for me. hehe.

Ahahahah, totally agree on the movie.
I don't even WANT to see that mess.
The actors in the movie have little to offer.
I mean srsly, Taylor Lautner? I think his biggest role was in Shark Boy & Lava Girl which looked pretty ****ty.
And Kristen Stewart annoys the hell outta me.

I have theory....

This deep unconditional love Edward and Bella share is something we all want to feel. We all want to have someone who loves us for who we are and would stop at nothing to protect us. We read the books to have a taste of what that is like because the books are from Bella's point of view. We put ourselves in Bella's shoes (or Edward's, if you are a guy).

...its just a theory.

In addition, everyone has different opinions. We all like different things.

see, i'm not saying i hate them or think they're stupid or people who are obsessed with them are stupid, i was just saying that i don't understand it.

a few of you have given me a glimpse into the obsession, yet most of you admit the books are poorly written and the story line is "eh."

but it's OK!

i just want to know more into the minds of the obsessors, lol.

(:offtopic: , but one of my guilty pleasures is Gossip Girl/The OC/drama shows like that. Are they realistic or have good acting in them? NO WAY. But I get attached to the characters, I love the clothing, and watching people screw up their lives makes me feel a little better about mine, even if it is fictional. That is me explaining my obsession.)

I am waiting to read the books, and put myself on the waiting list at my library. I heard all the hype and how many fans it has so I am willing to give it a try.

I know that I am a HUGE...HUGE...HUGE...HUGE Harry Potter freak so hopefully I can find another series about magical people who fall in love and I am hoping that Twilight will be my next my next book obsession. I need one know that Harry Potter is over.

Nothing could ever compare to HP, the best series in the world. But hopefully Twilight keeps me interested.

Aw, really? I hadn't heard that it was supposed to be dark and twisted before now, and that sounded cool. =(

Romance novels aren't my thing, so Twilight never caught my interest. Vampires can be cool, but I'd rather wait until the library has Carpe Jugulum --and the books leading up to it-- to get my vampire fix.

::yes:: I agree. I like the books but I'm not obsessed with them. That's why it's taking me so long to read the books because they don't catch my interest as much as other books I own do.

This one girl at my school was saying about how I was just "following the crowd" for reading Twilight. I can read whatever book I want to. I don't need to be labeled as a follower just because I read a popular book series.

once.
again.

i am not.
not.
comparing the stories of twilight and harry potter.

i am however.
comparing.
the fan base.

which to me is: a bunch of people that are head over heels obsessed with a story that when actually read, could be written a hundred times better, and because it isnt it sounds like a whiney, teeny-bopper "lets try to write something dark and dramatic!" high school term paper. and people that actually write dark and dramatic stories get a heckuva lot less attention because the writing style is much more complex and descriptive, as compared to these stories where everything is watered down to the point of boredom and its easier for the general public that really don't have that wide of a vocabulary to understand.

and just so i dont get shot. thats my opinion. not a statement. im not saying people that read harry potter and twilight dont have a large vocabulary and cant handle larger, complex stories. no, thats not what im saying at all. but from a performs point of view in both writing and acting, ive learned the very hard way that you have to dumb down everything so its easier for the general public to understand: making it more popular because it is so.

Well for me, the boringess put together with the bad writing kind of annoyed me.
Like it truly felt like a person who writes in a diary, but doesn't have anything to say but ABSOLUTELY everything they do.
That drives me insane, I mean all throughout Twilight you get these long paragraphs about what Bella did over the weekend, when she didn't do anything of consequence.
It annoys me. I mean, I don't care that she did laundry and worked on an English assignment.
I don't need to know every aspect of her life.

when i read on my own i want to do it for entertainment, i'm not looking for any educational value in my leisure reading...i get enough of that during the school year!

I'll say this.
When I picked up Twilight, I had no idea about the fandom. I almost didn't buy the book, because I wasn't sure if it would be any good.

And, in my many rereads of it, I find myself giggling at the poor writing. But, hey, it was Stephenie's first book. The writing style, while not the eloquent one of J.K. Rowling, is relatable. It sounds like something a teenager would write, which is why many teenagers read it. It's something they can understand. It makes them feel smart to plow through a book that fast. It's an easy read.

I know it's not well written.
I know it's not plausible.
I know it's fluff.
I know the movie's going to stink.
I know it's not a challenging read.
I know I'm not gaining anything from reading it.

But I love it. Not because other people do, but because I enjoy it. If you don't, that's fine.

just being curious, why is that?

Like Jenny said, I like to read no brainers. It takes me much longer to read a book that makes me reread parts just so I can understand what it means. It's kind of hard for me to enjoy a book that I don't understand what's going on.
:p

And that's pretty much the reason why I dropped Honors English. I kept failing everything because I'd get the essays wrong. Like in this one book, we were discussing one characters death, and I was like "HE WAS DEAD?!"

yeah that's me.

I suppose the crap I read isn't really written well.

I've got a few books that I love that written really well, but I can only reread them so many tiemes.

and there's nothing wrong with reading things that you don't have to think about, even though a story that can actually make you think is a little bit more important, to me anyway.

like i said, i was just being curious.

Agreed.
Books that make me think are books I like to read. They're what I crave for.
And books that really tap into my emotions. I love it when I can find a book where I really connect with the character, and I can feel what they feel. A book that can make me cry, is almost always a favorite book of mine.

My books that I read solely for entertainment, are generally things I read when I need something to do.

Twilight for me sits on the border of thinking and not thinking. There are times when I'll stop and think about the relationship between Edward & Bella, where I'll try to figure out what should happen in the next book. I try to work through these things. It's generally the relationships that I think about, not the actual plot, because the plot when generally described makes me want to cry.

I kinda don't get the obsession. I read the books and really enjoyed them, I just don't get obsession with them. They were nice and all but I don't think I'd obsess over them. And everyone finds Edward amazing and stuff, honestly I find him kind of annoying. -ducks-

Personally, I do find him annoying.
Mostly what annoys me is he kind of talks like a book. He over-narrates things when he speaks and I can't STAND it.
I do like the cute things he says/does, but there are things like that that bother me.

I like the books alot, but I'm more focused on the other characters than I really am on Bella and Edward.
I don't really care for either of them.
I'm not like Harry Potter obsessed, but I do like them. :p
