View Full Version : Broke my leg at Epcot Monday

I was at the top of the steps of the Mayan Temple in Mexico when I overstepped or something. I ended up coming down HARD on my right foot and severely breaking my tibia, fibula, and ankle. I had to have surgery in Orlando. The surgeon put metal rods into each of the shin bones and reconstructed my ankle with a metal plate and screws. The pain was excruciating to say the least. I was discharged from the hospital today and will go home Saturday. So much for my vacation!

Oh my gosh, that must have hurt! :( Was it at least the end of your trip and you already got to do most things? I sprained my ankle at CBR in 1991. Luckily, it was the last night of our trip so I only had to fly home in pain. Welcome to the "I hobbled home from Disneyworld" club!!!! Hope you feel better soon!:)

It was day 2 of our 5 days. We had been to HS Sunday and this was our Epcot day. At least we had already done our Chef Mickey breakfast that morning. That was an awesome treat, BTW. So I missed out on AK and MK.

How horrible! I feel for you.

Note to self: DO NOT LET DH, who already went down the steps at home throwing out his knee and thereby causing the cancellation of Feb 2008 WDW vacation, ANYWHERE near Mayan temple in Epcot in Feb 2009. Broken bones are MUCH worse! End of note to self.

Hope your healing goes well -

That is EXACTLY what happened to me 6 years ago. My foot slipped off the edge of one step, hit HARD on the next one and BAM! The doctor said maybe the brake was a bit worse than it would have been because I was carrying my 9 month old daughte & twisted on the way down to keep her from hitting the ground. I managed to get my hand behind he head & her in front of my body so she wasn't hurt, just startled.
One metal plate and 9 screws later, I was put back together. The ankle bones all fractured, letting the tibia & fibula slip straight down. Those bones spiral broke.
I was in a cast, brace or walking aparatus for 20 weeks. If you have any questions about what to expect with recovery, etc. Please feel free to send me a PM.

Oh, I am so sorry..I'll lift you in prayer for a speedy recovery..also, maybe while you are recovering, you can plan your next Disney trip:) I broke my ankle while a mission trip..I hate to say how, but...I was trying to keep away from a mouse and decided to dance my way out of cabin....and bam, I went down and there I was..1oo plus steps to the bottom where my car was parked, an 11 hour drive home and 4 weeks later, they decided that my ankle WAS broken....glad to hear that you had your surgery and that you are on the mend...it sounds like you had a dr. that knew what he was doing..how devastating not to be able to complete your vacation...

Those steps have their nerve!!! I mean, they ruined your vacation--I'll walk on them extra hard next time I'm there so they learn their lesson!! They can't go around making Diser's miserable--there's alot of us out here and we defend our fellow Disers!!!

So sorry that happened. I hope you feel better soon and heal up well. That had to hurt awfully bad.

We're at SSR until Saturday morning. Hubs got a wheelchair from the front desk so he can push me around literally. I don't know that I'll be up to riding any rides but I would like to see some of the shows I've missed by being in the hospital all week. We'll just have to see how sore I am tomorrow.

I was initially taken to Celebration's ER (very nice place) but Florida Hospital in Orlando has a special fractures unit. Apparently that's the place to be if you break a bone. The doctor there is supposed to at the top of his field.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I guess we'll all have to be more careful on those stairs! I fell at Epcot, too. It was in the Rose & Crown area and I was walking slowly watching the tail end of Illuminations through some trees. I forgot I was on a sidewalk and - splat - ended up on the walkway. I wasn't hurt, though, just extremely embarassed. Take care and try to enjoy what's left of your trip.

Wow, what a question! Maybe you better work on your bedside manner! ;)

And FWIW, my mother who is not "older" or "overweight" (nor does she have a medical condition) did the same thing as the OP when they were visiting my brother's family in Florida last month. There was a small step outside their church that wasn't well-marked and all it took was coming from the dark church into the bright sunlight and one wrong step.

OP, hope you heal quickly and completely!! :goodvibes

Hey JRT, just an fyi- when I was 21, thin and in the best shape of my life I stepped down wrong off a step, maybe 8 inches high and broke my foot in three places. Even 110 pounds falling on a foot can wreak havoc.
So it happens. :)

Do they teach tactfulness these days in med. school? Someone needs to suggest it! Really! That is just the rudest thing to ask a total stranger! Who really cares! Does she deserve it more if she is over-weight or over 50? Bless her heart, her vacation was practically ruined and she is suffering--that is the only story here!

OP--I am just so terribly sorry!:grouphug: My sister (in her 30's at the time--for anyone who needs to know and THIN) fell down her basement steps (tripped over her daughter's shoes left at the top) and had the same surgery. They did go back in and take the metal out later and that helped.

i am so sorry to hear about your accident. can i tell you that coming from the dark interior of the mexico pavilion and out into the super bright sunlight, i have often felt "off" and make sure to grab the railing every time. i can very easily see how someone could misstep on that thing and end up in serious trouble.

and a little insight into the inappropriate comments of the med student....i have worked for years in a med school. most students come into med school with the "appropriateness" factor, but they are often taught to shed it over their years here. in a clinical setting they have to put aside the feeling of inappropriateness for things like asking such questions in order to get the info they need out of a patient. INFORTUNATELY - many forget to turn that filter back on when in a social/non clinical setting. i was onced asked if i needed condoms for my son - who was at work with me and was only 10 at the time - while we were headed to the cafeteria. i chewed the med student a new one.

I'm so sorry you had this happen at Disney:worried: . I know how much it hurts, when is was 29(and not over weight for our young med student) I missed the last step in our new house(been there about 9 months) and hit just right so that I had compund fractures of the tibia and fiba. Two plates and I don't remember how many screws later I was in a temp cast for 10 days then into a regular one for about 6 more weeks. The ortho never told me when to start putting weight on the leg, so I didn't. At the 6 week post op mark he said if I could walk on the leg I could have the cast off and get a boot. Since I didn't know to try walking on it before hand there was no way I could so I had to stay in the cast another week, I was so mad, if they had said the week before to try walking on it I would have been ready. So make sure you ask when you can start puttin weight on it.

Take it easy, keep it elevated and iced, and don't skip the pain meds just because you think you feel better. The meds take time to build in your system and if you wait till it hurts it takes longer for relief. Plus there are many studies these days that say you heal slower when you are in pain.

If you need any advice just ask, it seems several of us have "been there done that"

We are on a message board...I cant see who I am talking to! In a clinical setting, I wouldnt have to ask...

I have to ask people about stool samples, sexual history, etc. The fact is, cutting to the chase is best to find out a patient's history. Its the most important thing in finding a diagnosis.

I was just curious...I wouldnt have asked otherwise...

My mom got 4 fractures in her foot a couple of months ago -- just "stepped wrong" on the last stair, on a staircase she's been using at least twice a day for 30 years. Ended up with plates and screws and basically stuck indoors the last couple of months (though thank God making a really speedy recovery)

She's 70, so she feared it was osteoporosis or something (nope, doesn't have it!) but the orthopod and the physical therapist both said it's very common, and happens to 13 year olds and 25 year olds just as easily, and nothing to do with her age or anything other than dumb luck.

I wasn't going to say anything....but you're not the OP's doctor so perhaps you should leave the questions to whomever is. ;) Any soon-to-be-doctor should understand that patients don't want their private medical history out for all the world to see (think HIPPA!).

I understand that you didn't mean anything by it and that you were just curious, but, if you were in a clinical setting you wouldn't be asking potentially sensitive or embarrassing questions in front of thousands of people. It would be in private. I am sure that you can understand that. It isn't the question, it's the forum.

Ouchie ouchie ouchie! Hugs and good wishes coming your way!

If you are flying home, call the airline and let them know that you now have a special need. My kneecap once popped off on a Disney cruise, and I ended up in an immobilizing cast from knee to ankle. I had to keep it straight, which is incompatible with tight airline quarters. Thank God for ATA (I still miss them). They were very understanding and gave us a whole row to ourselves. Even tho' it was in the back of the plane, requiring some hobbling, it was well worth it so I could sit with my leg propped out across the seats. If you're going to need something like that, see if they will note it on your reservation. That wasn't possible for us since we were on the ship, but thankfully they dealt with it at the airport.

OK, let me know WHEN you are going to become a Dr and WHERE, so I don't get YOU for my Dr! :rolleyes1

....I was discharged from the hospital today and will go home Saturday. So much for my vacation!Hope all heals quickly and well. And you are on your way soon to a return trip to WDW.

Wow, how did you do that? I hope you can salvage the rest of your trip and at least enjoy the time you have left.

I'm a med student and I havent seen anyone do that much damage just overstepping...although, I havent been around long! You must have really come down hard...

Are you older, overweight or have a medical condition?

Just curious... :headache: :rolleyes2

My mistake...I was thinking of a different movement...

I mean Tib/Fib fractures are quiet common...

The way the movement was described, I was only thinking a fib fracture...it breaks, but the tibia is the main weight bearing bone...

regardless, I hope you get some magic in somehow!

Must be bad luck season for us Louisianians...

On the way to WDW May 22 we were rearended on the I-10.:faint: All was ok except for a crack in my bumper and bruised buttocks on my DD16, who hit it on the seat belt. Poor Darling...It only bother her into the afternoon on the next day and then we didn't hear another word about it.

Two days later my Dsis staying at POP fell while going back to her room with her grandson. Major wipeout. :scared1: She was bruised and battered but nothing broken, thank goodness.

Here's hoping we make it through hurricane season...:worship:

Believe me, jrt1176 doesn't want you as a patient either.

Although, I get that jrt's question was asked in a manner that came across as too forward and probably in the wrong forum, he/she was asking not to be nosy but because body habitus and age affect osteoporosis and the strength of bones. Obviously he/she wasn't trying to offend the OP so scolding them to eternity is uncalled for.

OP, hope you are recovering well. I have seen numerous freak accidents at work and it sounds like you took a pretty hard fall. Glad to know you went to a hospital with a well known orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon can make or break (for lack of a better word) a patients recovery and healing process. Best of luck to you.

We tried to salvage some more of our vacation today. About all I can comfortably do is sight see and shop from a wheel chair. We went to EPCOT again and toured the rest of the World Showcase. Some of the gang rode Mission Space and all of us rode Ellen's Energy Adventure. The standby line was too long at Test Track and we rode pretty much everything we had hoped to ride before my accident Monday. We went from EPCOT to HS to see Fantasmic then came home to SSR. I over did it a bit and now have my leg elevated with ice packs on top to bring down the swelling. My ddil just changed my dressings and everything looks pretty good other than the swelling and bruising. No signs of infection and the pain is under control.

JonDee: We'll be home Sunday evening sometime. We're leaving here tomorrow morning and spending the night at Pensacola before driving on to home. You know I hate cooking so this could be a bonus for me! On your days off I could really use kid taxi service. I'll talk that over with you next week.

JRT: I didn't take offense at your questions. One of the first things I asked the orthopedic doctor was if I have osteoporosis or something like that that would cause my bones to break so severely. He assured me that my bones appear to be normal and it was just a freak accident. I'm in my 40s and somewhat overweight but by no means obese so that had nothing to do with it. It seems that bad luck and klutziness are the ones to blame.

Disney has been very cordial and wants us to leave here with good will. At this point we are fine with everything and just want to get me back on my feet. We WILL be coming back to our favorite place on earth as soon as we can arrange it.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes and pixie dust magic. It keeps my spirits up to know that so many people do care about what happens to a stranger. I wish I could give you all a big hug. Since I can't then we'll have to settle for a cyber hug:hug:

Thanks for the understanding. I know it didnt come off the best when you read it, but the best intentions were there and I had to ask out of curiosity...

Hey, we are all overweight! I know I could stand to lose a few pounds!

Best of luck!

Much appreciated!

The fact is, if you're not in the medical field you dont look at these things the same way...

Most people see an injury happen and thats it...

But, I'm always thinking why or how it happened...its not always black and white. Medicine is a science, but its not exact. EVERY body is different!

Believe me, jrt1176 doesn't want you as a patient either.

Two years ago I dislocated my knee on day 1 of our week long trip. So I know how you feel!
So just try to make the best of it. Just think you could be back home confined to your couch at least here you can still get out and see things. Just take it easy!

You know....while I agree that the med student was asking this question in an inappropriate place...the simple fact is that I WISH more nurses/doctors would take the time to ask/observe things like this. I'd have had a diagnosis of a chronic problem much sooner, but I, having no medical background, didn't put two symptoms I was experiencing into the thought that they could mean anything for the problem I went to the doctor for....and since that problem was much more serious to me, I wasn't complaining about everything that ailed me. Had the med student/nurse/doctor asked me about anything else that was bothering me, I would have saved months and thousands of dollars on tests while they went through other possibilities.

I'd appreciate having a doctor that wanted to ask questions to get a full picture of the patient's lifestyle, health, and general feelings before diagnosis. I just would hope that those questions could be in the exam room, not the waiting room. I'm sure the med student knows that now, and after the flaming they got here, will wait for the exam room! I just hope we didn't make them feel like they shouldn't ask there either!

Hmmm, since OP said she wasn't offended, wouldn't that make it none of YOUR business either? Just saying.
