I posted this on the other thread...but here is uba tuba in my kitchen! It is the most popular granite choice in New England, though I don't think it would work well in a Florida home...

Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful!!

Thanks so much! We were in the kitchen hell that John and Kevin are going through about a year and a half ago. In this pic, the kitchen isn't quite done...but I had been waiting SO long, I took this as my "after" picture. The crown molding isn't done in this pic and the glass isn't in the corner cabinet, etc...a few little details. But it was functional, so that was all that mattered at that time! I know John and Kevin can relate.

I love this cake, it's so pretty! I think I might attempt this for DD's next Birthday. ::yes::

I am litterally drooling. I need to go get me some cake now! :rotfl:

It was really easy to do! I am not good at cakes at all and even I managed this one. I didn't like the Tink candle topper, (she looks kind of pissed off), but it was all I could find. It was for my daughter's 5th birthday.

DisneyKevin

We share the kitchen responsibilities.

I cook and John eats what I cook. :rotfl2:

Kitchen Remodel Update
The granite is 90% done.

There is one piece that seems to have been mis-measured. It is the piece that goes behind the sink.

Above our sink is a pass through to the dining room. There is a counter on this pass through that is going to be the same granite as the counter tops.

The piece behind the sink is supposed to meet the pass through counter and currently it does not. There is a 1/2 to 1/4 inch gap.

Their solution was to cut down part of the wall in order to cover their mis-measurement. I was told that they can "spackle and stucco and then place a piece of baseboard molding to cover where they cut the wall."

We dont want spackle, stucco or baseboard molding on the wall in the dining room...so.....

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Kevin went carnival ape crazy on the granite guys, yet again. (it's to the point where I'm talking about myself in the third person)

I explained that I would not accept this soultion to THEIR mis-measuring. It was explained to me that this meant that they had to cut another piece.

I think they understood when I told them that I didnt give a (delete delete delete) what they had to do. THEY WERE NOT CUTTTING THE WALL.

The granite guys are coming back tomorrow.....maybe.

Is this the part where the granite people start to pay you to go away? :rotfl2:

The university I work has a lot of construction going on right now. While it doesn't rival UCF (under construction forever...) we've got a good bit happening. There is a woman in our office in charge of facilities and the things she deals with on a daily basis are amazing. My favorite was in a computer lab the contractor installed the wrong windows. The windows were supposed to be clear. They were not, they had some kind of privacy glaze on them. The contractor then ordered special blinds put up to cover the windows. The Princess of Darkness, as we refer to her, buried several contractors in the crater her explosion created.

Good luck!

We hired a local company to remodel our kitchen. They are a reputable local company and have been in business for 25 years.

They have worked for us before and we're always happy with the outcome.

The granite guys are sub-contractors.

One of the guys from the original business shows up this morning nd the conversation goes like this....

Him - "I'm here to do some finish work today."
Me - "Well, the granite guys are supposed to be here with the piece they re-cut."
Him - "Yeah....about that.....they're not coming."
Me - "THEY"RE NOT COMING????"
Him - "Yeah. When I got to work this morning, the new piece was leaning against the front door. It had a note that said they were'nt coming back."
Me - "Do you think we scared them?"
Him - "Maybe a little. They hate to re-cut."

Apparently, John and I scared the big, tough, granite contractors.

I have a hard time with someone not finishing a job because they were asked to do it correctly and offer the finished product that we are paying for.:furious:

Kevin this is just nuts. If you can accept the mess up than they need to deeply discount their sub par work or they need to find someone else to finish the job. My husband was a contractor for 12 years before he went back to school. He said dont accept it or get a huge discount. How crazy are those people. We are not coming back because we dont like to recut.

Let me see if I did my job that way. Sorry sir you dont get your medication a second time because I dont like to remedicate due to throw up. Get for real. Good luck. That just sucks.

Isn't the idea of premeasuring so that when they show up with the cut piece it fits?

This whole thing sounds exactly like my friends business. Are you sure you aren't really here on the South Shore?

They had a similar problem with their subcontractor. They didn't get rid of the subcontractor because of the miscuts, but because they swore (while working on remeasuring) in front of a child. It wasn't that bad of a word. But our friends don't tolerate it because they are a family business. :lmao: :lmao:

One of the guys from the original business shows up this morning nd the conversation goes like this....

Him - "I'm here to do some finish work today."
Me - "Well, the granite guys are supposed to be here with the piece they re-cut."
Him - "Yeah....about that.....they're not coming."
Me - "THEY"RE NOT COMING????"
Him - "Yeah. When I got to work this morning, the new piece was leaning against the front door. It had a note that said they were'nt coming back."
Me - "Do you think we scared them?"
Him - "Maybe a little. They hate to re-cut."

I work with contractors and their subcontractors daily and we just recently had a brick mason throw a tantrum and leave the job site when he was told that the sign he built was leaning, two rows too short and wouldn't pass the inspection. You'd think that the contractor and subs would want to keep current clients and get positive referrals, not negative feedback.

Do the job and do it right and we can all get along. Good luck and hopefully you'll be whipping up some happy large crab cakes soon.

I just finished working on an HGTV show, and you guys sound like the PERFECT candidates to have been on the show...having all kinds of drama:duck:
The weirdness of contractors never ceases to amaze me. We actually had contractors walk out on jobs that they knew was going to be on a national network that reaches millions of homes. You just never know.
I can't believe they tried to pull one over on you with the broken granite. The nerve!! Good luck with getting the right size soon. I'm surprised they didn't just try to cut it to fit on site...but I don't really know what the issue looked like from that point of view. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
