I saw this site mentioned somewhere on here a while back so I thought you might be interested in this info. The graphic on their website now has a little animation added and when I emailed them yesterday to ask when we'd be getting more info this is what I got back.
Thank you! We are really excited about our launch later this summer.
Be sure to check back soon for a blog we’ll post for all to reference on Elf Island. In the blog we will share tidbits about Elf Island and why we started developing this awesome virtual world.
Thanks again for your inquiry and get excited. VERY excited!

Good news! I got an email from Liz (staff from Elf Island).
Thanks for the great emails of enthusiasm and your interest in Elf Island!
We’ve heard from quite a few former VMKers. Sorry you had to go through the closing of VMK.
The good news! If you loved VMK, we think you’ll flip over Elf Island, especially if you become one of the founding players from the very beginning. Elf Island has
tons of cool fun like VMK, but it’s actually a whole new kind of virtual world with lots of experiences not found anywhere else.
We’re especially pumped about Gaming for Good™, which empowers kids to play an active role in making a difference in the real world! Your online game play
will help create acts of good. Not pretend good. Actual good. It’s such a great feeling!
And you’ll get to live the island life in an amazingly creative environment packed with active, safe social interaction and game play. It’s the kind of fun you loved at VMK, but even more!
Elf Island is still under wraps, but we’ll be launching this summer. Because we follow children’s privacy guidelines, we can’t communicate with you again after this email, but we invite you to keep visiting Elf Island to check for updates. We’ll be in beta test soon.... and check back to www.elfisland.com for news about pre-registration and an upcoming blog!
Thanks again for your interest!

Does anyone know if this is the same company that made the interactive online novels?
Anyway, found their blog : http://blog.elfisland.com/
I'm really hoping that this is as kid friendly as they say - still haven't found a good substitute for my kids...

it is for some reason very interesting even without seeing much. If they can create a game half as well as they can create anticipation it will be fantastic!

Wow- Thanks for posting that, cyre!
I think it's great how these games have reached out to our community. I don't know much about the game yet, but they certainly seem to have a unique approach to a virtual world. I'm not a huge fan of their art, but it could grow on me!
I'll definitely sign up for the game preview- I mean, I can't turn down a free hat! :woohoo:

I would like to share with you all the response I received from elf island today after writing to them specifically asking them about COPPA and their plans to protect children. Here it is:
Hi Aengus,
Thanks for the outreach! We appreciate your positive comments regarding Elf Island and our blog.
As you can imagine, we are bursting at the seams to share Elf Island and the goodies found inside this revolutionary virtual world.
As parents of twin boys, <name removed by aengus for their privacy> and I take COPPA and how people market to kids very seriously. And, as the architects of Elf Island, we are equally as passionate about making sure we are 100% COPPA compliant. We have a team of attorneys, as well as the organization Truste, guiding us and ensuring we are running our business properly and responsibly.
Let me explain our pre-registration, and answer the question that you posed.
Elf Island’s pre-reg allows the registration of a user-created and anonymous "user name" and "password." We do not ask for any personally identifiable information and no one will have the ability to disclose any information to any third party in or through the pre-registration site.
A user that decides to pre-register does not have access to any chat rooms, message boards or any other live-posting forums (all of which will become available upon the launch of the full site). In fact, all that has occurred during pre-reg is that a child can secure a favorite “user name” and “password” and, under COPPA, this activity does not require notices, disclosures and requirements to be in full play.
Pre-registration will not enable any user to access the Elf Island website when the game launches. At launch, Elf Island will require everyone to fully register and we will continue to demonstrate COPPA compliance with all notices, disclosures and opt out requirements. As I am sure you know, parents are required to be notified when a child signs up for an online game.
Elf Island is dedicated to ensuring COPPA compliance, and as parents we are passionate about this commitment on a personal level. Elf Island’s mission is to ‘do good’ and is the credo we live by. Every aspect of Elf Island focuses on giving back, working as a community, and being responsible citizens. We can't wait for you to personally discover all that Elf Island has to offer.
We are happy to continue this discussion, and look forward to helping kids have fun while doing good. Meanwhile, continue checking our blog on Elf Island!!
Thanks,
XXX (removed by Aengus in case the writer didnt want their name disclosed)
"In compliance with The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"), it is necessary for us to obtain parental permission for all children under the age of thirteen (13) to register as a member of Elf Island. We will not knowingly accept, collect, maintain or use any information from any children under the age of 13 without first receiving appropriate verifiable consent. For any child under the age of 13, a parent or legal guardian will need to contact privacy@goodeggstudios.com to provide consent to such child's registration and for access to any area of Elf Island that may gather personal information. Permission and access will only be granted after such consent has been verified."

Please :) and yes I am saying Please!
Please do not use this as ammunition against a particular game. Lets all just be happy with a great response for this game. It would be very unfair to do so under the current circumstances.

Only 2 mules! lol Go for it. You wouldn't want them to miss out on the founder's hat. :)
I'm definitely mule poor compared to the Queen of mules! LOL!!! The game still took up way too much of my time.
My other title are very good for Elf Island too. I better go grab them!
I'll sign-up DH while I'm at it!
Please :) and yes I am saying Please!
Please do not use this as ammunition against a particular game. Lets all just be happy with a great response for this game. It would be very unfair to do so under the current circumstances.
I didn't name any names... :rolleyes1
kidding. I understand and won't say any more to aim it towards any sites in particular.

OK, I snagged my mule's names....Dolphairy & ElvenMagic (boy)!!
I just hope we can use them for the game. In Wizard 101, They are our log-in names, but the the in game character names had to be from the menu.

I know ;) but I didnt ask ROFL so I didnt post :)
ETA: I already saw some bad info being passed along. They didnt send out parent notifications yet because they didnt collect any childrens email addresses ROFL Please read it carefully and if you forget when you registerred what happened, they only collected a user name not an email address. They did not collect any information from any children or even an adult for that matter.
The bitthdate seems to be so they can gauge who their audience is. I think we will shock them ROFL

Very nice response back Aengus! :goodvibes Thank you for checking into the site and keeping your eye out for the kid in all of us!:rotfl:
princess is preregistered as princessmadi (it wouldn't let her do her entire VMK name) Could just be the username but not the character name as mentioned already. I've noticed princess just wants to find a place to settle down and find ALL her VMK friends in one place again. (she still wants VMK back BIG TIME!)
She's had her eye on Elf's Island for awhile now. THANKS cyre for the heads up!
Keep searching and you can find even more about the Kronenberger's.
I really love how they are including doing good into the game.

Does anyone think that they will charge kids/their parents to play this game? or maybe like some type of membership where only members can access certain spots? Personally I hope the game is free in all its parts and they get some company to sponser them or they have some advertisments on their site somewhere.

While I would love to find a free game, VMK being fully free was a rare thing in the game world from what I've seen. Not many games are set up as a promotional tool with a huge advertising budget behind them. Most support themselves by offering paid features.

Well VMK had a multi-million dollar Corporation to back it up, with this game I believe 2 couples made this game or started it. While it could be nice to get funding or some type of sponsership with the game since it promotes good moral values and lessons. Also it wouldnt hurt to have some kid friendly advertisments on the page to help with maintaining the game. The game seems very friendly and seems like VMK quality, but again, we still wont know until they let players into the game. I think i'll email them and ask if they have any future plans for pay to play.

Signed myself and my fiance up! The first thing out of his mouth when I said the registration is up was, "Did you sign me up?". We both love how it looks so far. We hope that it will be adult appropriate. I guess we just assumed it would be. (Oh yes, forgot to post an announcement that we became engaged on June 29th.)
The bad thing about the registration is I had to go back to my VMK name of MyAwesome since my favorite title of MyHorseAwesome is too long :( Maybe this is a sign that I am about to go back to a happy place.

My daughter's friend, who won't say more that two words to me in real, would find me and talk up a storm in VMK. When I had my daughter ask her why, she said it was because we were both the same size there, and it's easier to talk to people her own size.

Well, after lots of lurking, enjoying life and family and summer, my wife and I were directed to this eventual game a couple days ago.
We're actually a little excited about this one, for some reason. It definitely looks like it has some potential, and the artwork is more aesthetically pleasing than another game we tried (and got bored with).
I'm looking forward to seeing many of ya'll there when it finally opens.

Commitment to Online Safety
July 23rd, 2008
At Elf Island, we take online safety very seriously. We want you and your children to feel comfortable exploring our virtual world, playing games, and making lots of new friends!
Safety is our top priority, so we have plenty of features in the works to assure Elf Island is a safe environment for players of all ages:
Moderators – A team of live Moderators watches Elf Island at all times. They review all chat activity for potentially dangerous discussion and are available to address questions and concerns from players or parents.
Chat dictionary – Elf Island has safe chat through the use of a pre-determined dictionary. If a word is not in our dictionary, then you cannot say it on Elf Island! This helps to cut down on vulgar language, harassment, and the exchange of personal information.
Parental controls – Parents can view their child’s ban history, track their in-game progress, and set limits on the number of hours they are allowed to play each day.
Game downtime – To encourage kids to live an active lifestyle and get plenty of rest, Elf Island closes down at the end of each night.
Approved usernames – All player usernames are reviewed by our Moderation team and must be approved before the user can access the game, using that name.
COPPA compliance – Elf Island will obtain parental permission before allowing any child into our virtual world. Your personal information will never be shared and your child’s account can be canceled at any time!
Of course, the best way to make sure your child is safe is to keep an open line of communication. Elf Island will do our part to keep our players safe, but ultimately this responsibility lies with the parents. Here are a few quick tips to help keep you and your children safe while online.
If you have any questions about Elf Island’s commitment to online safety, feel free to contact: Liz@goodeggstudios.com
Online Safety Tips
Online Safety Tips to keep you and your children safe while online:
* Never reveal any personally identifiable information, such as your hometown or birthday, or contact information, such as your email address or phone number
* Never give out your account information, such as usernames and passwords
* Never give out photos of you, your home or your family
* Don’t open any email from someone you don’t know
* If anyone asks for any personal information or sends you any threatening messages, don’t answer! Instead, log off and make sure your child contacts you immediately.
* Most important of all - Monitor your child when he/she is online, make sure they’re only visiting sites that you have approved, and don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions!
This is good, we have gone from puzzles to solid information. Maybe we are getting close to opening...

Actually, I read it this way.
If you registered before Friday, July 24th (by the way, that date is wrong - tomorrow is the 25th...), you are a FOUNDER Member.
If you register beginning tomorrow, Friday, July 24th/25th, you will be a REGULAR member (ie, no founder's cap).
There's no need to be a member twice - you are either a Founder Member or a Regular Member.

Hey there Dis'ers. Been off for a while but feels good to be back and get a post in. Plus really looking forward to the originality of ElfIsland as I hope it doesn't dissapoint as my hopes are up after reading a lot today on it.
Per the mysterious blog.....I guess I kind of read it as the Elves were saying they were living somewhere, but now moved to a new home "Elf Island" and it was their little back story to how they ended up there. Just a guess, but seems to be more backstory information than anything else.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the founders hat for the pre-registration is blue and does not have the "F" on it.
And this paragraph was put under the new registration:
"Elf Island is launching soon, and you can be one of the first to live the island life! Play amazing games that help real people, animals and the earth. Create an Elf that walks and flies. Live on your very own island. Chat, trade and meet awesome animals!"
Looks like there will be guest rooms and trading.

Oh, I would want to have both games solo and play with another. Although, as we saw in Smallworlds, if you play a game with a "random another" instead of a friend some people are poor sports if they are losing and quit. So while I want to play against others, this is a problem we could see with that.

Uh oh... little discouraged here to learn there will be "arcade" games featured. That's the whole reason why I basically gave up on SmallWorlds because I can't play the games they required.
Hopefully, these games will be in place solely for fun and not for a way of earning anything...

Mahjong is really more of a puzzle game; you can take as much time as you want. And if you've ever played Bejeweled, the other games look like they might be in the same category.

I agree that both solo and paired/teams games would be nice. (Another problem we've seen at SW lately is there a couple of people who will play for a while, but when they start to lose they just won't take a turn (sometimes for hours), so eventually people have to quit so they can do something else and the other person wins.)

think of those tiles as actual tiles, forget its on a video screen in a game :)
You pick up a tile and match it with another tile and both come of the board. If you enjoy any kind of a solitaire type of game you will like mahjong. If you dont, well... then you wont :rotfl:

Ok, well I do like solitare/puzzle/logic type games - anything that DOESN'T require coordination :rotfl:

I love both Mah Jongg and Zuma. The other does look something like Bejeweled. Which I also like that game.
I agree that we should have both solo and PvP games.
Pink: In Mah Jongg you do have to match tiles. But, they both have to be "free". Free tiles are not covered by any other tiles and have a free edge on their left or right side. So it can be tricky. Also, some versions let you take as long as you want. Others will be on a timer.

I think I'll like Mahjong after all :teeth:The only tricky part is getting all of the tiles off the board in matched pairs. While it's sometimes possible to use permissible but imperfect matches, the scores will be lower.

Mom's being in a Mah Jongg playing club for years, and I don't know how to play. :eek:I was so fascinated with online mahjong that I decided to get a book about the real thing. Lo and behold, it's a completely different animal than the solo arcade game. Much more complicated, and of course it is multiplayer. Someday I really would like to learn though, as I have a lovely antique Mahjong set.
