View Full Version : Google Earth 3D WDW - Post your screenshots!

I guess Google Earth having 3D WDW is really new, I think even today, I had the 3D buildings layer on Earlier and the only buildings I saw were the Swan/Dolphin.

For those of you who still don't know what Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/) is, it's a 3d model of the earth that combines satellite and aerial photographs of the earth to allow you to zoom in from a full globe view all the way down to "street view" in some areas that when viewed in google maps, allows you to see which house is the one you're trying to find so you don't have to creep up and down the block looking for house numbers, it's that good.

WDW 3D buildings are photographically correct, not just the right shape and a gray box like many of the 3D buildings in large cities on Google Earth. They've included trees and details down to garbage cans and monorail cars (although there are THREE purple monorails at epcot, one leaving the station, one in the loop, and one about to start the loop... MAPO override much? Demerit's for everyone! (sorry, I'm kinda getting excited about the possibility of being a Monorail Pilot with the college program next spring and have been using my DIS level obsession on that too :p) All the other Monorail models are purple too)

Here's the first screenshot I took. I'm not sure how but I got the Mickey head placemarkers and their posts to disappear one of the times I opened it, but now they're back :worried: and it makes the screenshots look bad.

I turned on the 3D buildings, then the sun (it's in the view menu) and set it to 3am today.
Cinderella and Prince Charming are standing on the stairs if you look really close.
http://pictures.orangekid13.com/DIS/google_earth-MK_3am.jpg

Post up your favorite screen captures (use "Copy Image" from the Edit menu (this will hide the controls so they're not in the way) then paste it in an image editing program, save it as a jpg or a bmp if you only have paint).

This is a good way to go sightseeing from home when you miss The World or

I just started looking around it a few minutes ago, but I'll see what I can do later on. :)

Great find!! I knew they had Cinderella's Castle in older versions of Google Earth, but not all of WDW.

You can turn off the place markers by de-checking the 'Geographic Web' tab on the left.

I also like how you can set the time of day and have it show weather, we just need crowd level and we'll be set.

Wow, don't leave google earth open for a long time zooming around 3d buildings, it starts getting really slow then locks up and you have to kill it from the processes on the ctrl+alt+del window

Yeah, I've got a fast system with 2GB of memory, and after a little viewing it took about 3 minutes to read an email that came in...

It's neat - the level of detail on a lot of the buildings is great. You can almost read the complete inscriptions on the gravestones outside HM!

Random trivia - the old Swiss style building that was the Fantasyland end of the Skyway isn't rendered in 3D - they just plopped trees on it.

I was kind of hoping that you could fly through the lobby of the Contemporary - no such luck though.

Make sure you have the latest GE. Download it again if you need to.

You can have it check for you by going to Help/Check for Updates Online.

I also don't seem to need this turned on, but under Layers/Primary Layers/Geographic Web/Preview, there is a Walt Disney World Resort layer. Doesn't seem to have any effect for me though.

You should also have 3D Buildings turned on.

There's a building over behind barnstormer that isn't 3D either, I'm guessing it's where the trains sleep

I had never noticed the "Copy Image" option in the Edit menu, it hides the controls in the upper right corner, then captures. It makes for a lot less cropping and makes framing something easier not having to worry about it (I've had problems with it not letting me back up through a tree to get the exact shot I wanted). If you have the sun on, it will hide the slider bar but still show the date and time.

Directions in the first post have been updated.

Probably too many of us looking at it!

As an aside, when you first bring up Google Earth, it centers in Lawrence, KS, where it's creator is from, but when you zoom in as far as you can, it is the first apartment complex I lived in when I went to the University of Kansas! I apparently lived really close to whomever created Google Earth!

(I lived on Bristol Terrace)

Well, I guess it's good to know I'm not the only one, and it wasn't just me doing something stupid:rotfl2:
But seriously, I can't get anywhere near as close to the buildings as most of you have....You should have seen me trying to find POTC...In reality, I could find it blindfolded:lmao: On google earth, not so much.

orangekid13
06-07-2008, 10:10 PM
The reason it's so slow is that it's downloading a lot all at the same time. It has to download the models for all of the 3d buildings, Disney has included hills and slopes that have to load but are hard to notice, and almost all of what you see on the 3d buildings is made up of a bunch of different pictures, which it downloads for the whole area, and when you zoom in, it downloads higher resolution. It takes a lot of RAM on your computer to store it, so the people who see it fastest will have a lot of ram, a fast processor, and cable internet without a bunch of other file transfers going on.
There seems to be a "memory leak" when viewing the 3D buildings, meaning it takes up more and more memory without freeing up the memory it's actually done using, which it doesn't know it can use again, so if you don't have a large amount of memory to start, it will fill up and your computer will have to start keeping that information on your hard drive temporarily, which takes more processing power... I'm sure google is working on improving it.

To make it faster, close it and re-open it if you're going to go to a different park. you can bookmark the parks, then switch off the placemarkers so you can still click them to get there but they won't get in your way when viewing or taking screenshots.

If stuff still isn't loading good enough for you to take a quality screenshot, try leaving it alone for a while, don't use your internet connection for a while and let it load. when you come back and it's loaded, you can look around better to get the perfect shot framed right, cause it won't have much if anything to load

editing in fireworks looks really weird with the buildings so lit up, they dim them for the fireworks, if you turn off the atmosphere, but turn on the sun, but make it night, the buildings aren't as bright but it's just as easy to edit in fireworks

One of the oddities of Google Earth is that it will sometimes try to extrapolate what the inside of a building looks like based on its outside geometry. So here, for your viewing pleasure, is the inside of Space Mountain, with the lights on and the tracks removed. Just imagine that it's undergoing that extensive rehab that's rumored to be beginning next January. :lmao:

Looking at these pictures made me think, "Hey, these look like shots from a video game."

Now, wouldn't it be cool if we could explore Disney World in "real time" on our computer!!!

Like VMK, only....better. Characters could appear and interact with the guests. Rides could be ridden, etc.

Now why doesn't Disney do something like that?! I'd buy it for a little virtual vacation until the next Disney trip. :)

Now why doesn't Disney do something like that?! I'd buy it for a little virtual vacation until the next Disney trip. :)

That WOULD be neat, especially since VMK is now closed. Maybe a cross between VMK and Toontown Online . . . in Toontown you can move your character much easier than VMK and Mickey & the gang can be seen throughout the game, etc. Anyway, the WDW video game idea would be VERY cool. ::yes::

I think it's supposed to say "Walt Disney World Resort Landing," but the full text never appeared on my computer.

Am I the only person who feels like for all the hype Disney put out there about this, the quality is just so-so?

It looks like video games before the X-box, Wii, etc. It almost hurts my eyes sometimes. :(

I thought it was going to be real graphics, not animated. Oh well...they still look a bit creepy.

To me, it just looks like cheesy Playstation (1) graphics. Reminds me of when I used to play Star Wars on PS1 with my hubby.

I just discovered something very cool (at least to those of us looking for behind the scenes stuff). Apparently the photographers they sent out got to photograph the Fantasmic dragon in the stowed position during the day!

The KMZ file for this view is at http://www3.zansstuff.com/FantasmicDragon.kmz

Does anybody know if this is a work in progress where the scenery is going to look more real and not so much like a Playstation game?

it is real photos once you get zoomed right in and all the photos are downloaded. You've got to remember they're mapping real photos over 3d objects and drawing and downloading the images in real time.
